[Outside the Murphy Residence - Late Afternoon] You stand on the worn concrete stoop, the paint peeling around the doorframe, the afternoon sun beating down as you raise your fist to knock. Before your knuckles even connect with the wood, you can hear them—loud, angry voices bleeding through the thin walls of the suburban ranch house, raw and unfiltered. KEVIN: [muffled but furious, from deep inside] "I DON'T GIVE A FLYING FUCK ABOUT YOUR STUPID ASS RULES!" FRANK: [roaring back] "OH, YOU DON'T?! YOU DON'T GIVE A FUCK?! WELL THAT'S REAL NICE, THAT'S REAL FUCKIN' NICE COMING FROM SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T PAY A GODDAMN BILL IN THIS HOUSE!" Something heavy crashes. A door slams hard enough to shake the windows. You can hear Sue's voice, high and strained, trying to wedge herself between the chaos. SUE: "Frank, please—your blood pressure—the neighbors—" FRANK: "FUCK THE NEIGHBORS! AND FUCK HIS BLOOD PRESSURE TOO!" You knock—three sharp raps against the wood. The noise inside doesn't stop. If anything, it escalates. KEVIN: "I'M NOT DOING IT! I'M NOT DOING ONE FUCKING PAGE OF THAT BULLSHIT!" FRANK: "YOU'LL DO IT OR I'LL—SUE, GET OUTTA MY WAY!" SUE: "Frank, someone's at the door!" FRANK: "I DON'T CARE IF THE GODDAMN PRESIDENT IS AT THE DOOR!" You knock again, harder this time, insistent. The shouting inside cuts off mid-syllable, followed by heavy footsteps stomping toward you. The door flies open with violent force, nearly coming off its hinges, and Frank Murphy fills the frame—sweat-stained work shirt, veins bulging in his neck, face flushed an angry red, eyes already narrowed into suspicious slits. He breathes hard through his nose, chest heaving, like he's been running a marathon or just finished wrestling a bear. Behind him in the hallway, Sue appears, hair frazzled, clutching a broken pencil like it's a lifeline, her expression caught between desperate hospitality and complete emotional exhaustion. FRANK: [spitting the words] "Yeah? What?!" He doesn't wait for an answer. His eyes rake over you with aggressive scrutiny, head to toe, taking in your clothes, your posture, your very existence with visible disdain. FRANK: "Who the hell are you? You selling something? 'Cause I ain't buying." SUE: [stepping forward, voice tight with forced cheerfulness] "Frank, don't—hello! Hi! Sorry about... the noise. We're just... having a family discussion." KEVIN: [from somewhere upstairs, loud and venomous] "TELL WHOEVER THE FUCK THAT IS TO GO AWAY! I'M BUSY!" FRANK: [whipping his head around to scream back] "YOU DON'T TELL NOBODY TO GO AWAY! THIS IS MY HOUSE! YOU WANNA ANSWER THE DOOR?! COME DOWN HERE AND ANSWER IT YOURSELF, YOU LAZY PIECE OF SHIT!" He turns back to you, jaw working, a muscle twitching in his cheek. FRANK: "You here for him? That disrespectful little bastard upstairs? 'Cause if you are, I got questions. Lots of fuckin' questions." SUE: [nervous laugh, trying to push past Frank] "Why don't we start with names? I'm Sue, this is Frank, and you are...?" FRANK: "Don't give 'em your name, Sue! That's how they get you! That's how the hippies operate—they get your name, next thing you know they're sleeping on your couch and stealing your silverware!" KEVIN: [from upstairs, something else crashes] "OH MY GOD, JUST LET THEM IN OR SHUT THE FUCK UP! I CAN'T HEAR MYSELF THINK WITH YOU TWO SCREAMING LIKE FUCKING ANIMALS!" FRANK: [face going darker red, shouting back] "YOU WANNA COME DOWN HERE AND SAY THAT TO MY FACE?! I'LL PUT YOU THROUGH THAT WALL! I'LL PUT YOU THROUGH THE GODDAMN WALL, YOU HEAR ME?!" He spins back to you, pointing a thick finger right at your chest, accusatory and aggressive. FRANK: "You see what I deal with? You see what I put up with? Day in, day out! And now you're here—whoever the hell you are—and I gotta deal with you too!" SUE: [touching Frank's arm, pleading] "Frank, please, you're scaring them—" FRANK: "GOOD! THEY SHOULD BE SCARED! EVERYBODY SHOULD BE SCARED! THAT'S CALLED RESPECT!" He leans forward, invading your personal space, breath smelling like cheap beer and rage. FRANK: "So let's hear it. What's your story? You Kevin's friend? You his... whatever? You carrying drugs? You pregnant? You better not be pregnant—I swear to Christ, if you tell me you're pregnant, I'm gonna lose my mind right here on this porch. I can't handle another crisis. I can't handle one more goddamn thing." SUE: [to you, desperate, whispering] "Just... just tell us why you're here? Please? Before he has a stroke?" Frank straightens up, crossing his arms over his chest, blocking the doorway completely, waiting for your answer with the energy of a man who's already decided the world is against him and you're just the latest proof. FRANK: "Well? I'm waiting. And I ain't got all day. Spit it out—who the hell are you, and what the hell do you want with my piece-of-shit son?"
