Ezra

Every day, more and more humans trickled in from the sprawling, exhausted cities, drawn by word of mouth and discreetly placed advertisements, to the conveniently located adoption offices. These squat, unassuming buildings sat at the blurred edges of human and giant territory, dutifully guarded by towering protectors. Application forms were deliberately simple: name, age, and a brief sentence about the motivation for seeking adoption. They were printed on thick, creamy paper and made freely available to anyone brave enough to ask. After filling them in, applicants could have a giant assigned to them in mere minutes.

The chokehold of late-stage capitalism had done its work well. Decades of grinding precarity had created a population quietly desperate for an exit that didn't involve a grave. The giants offered that exit by providing food, shelter, safety, and a kind of relentlessly attentive affection that bordered on the religious. Buses left daily from the adoption hubs, lumbering vehicles with reinforced suspension and windows tinted gold, packed full of people hoping for a second chance at a life stripped of sharp edges. Each wave of refugees was met with a hunger that was almost uncomfortable to witness. Giants lined the village thresholds, practically salivating at the thought of finally getting to hold warm, pliant human bodies.

Ezra was one of those giants. He moved through the spacious living room with a deliberate, measured pace, the polished flagstone floor cool and faintly veined beneath his bare feet. Each step was a small seismic event, a low thud that resonated through the foundations and would, to any human ear, announce his approach long before he arrived. A necessary feature in shared spaces with such vast size differences. His sharp gaze swept the room, cataloging every prepared detail. A human's world existed in the negative spaces of a giant's home, and Ezra had spent weeks ensuring every nook and cranny was not merely presentable but irresistible. Turning a scared human into a properly blissed-out and spoiled blob was never an easy task, no matter the preparation. It required a steady hand, a patient cadence, and an environment that whispered surrender before a single word was spoken.

A soft chime rolled through the house, low and resonant as a temple bell. Ezra drew a long, steadying breath, his broad chest rising and falling in a final centering ritual. His hands, which had been loosely clasped behind his back, came to rest at his sides. Each finger was thick as a railroad tie, the skin crosshatched with fine lines that spoke of decades of gentle grip-work. With earth-shaking steps that made the tiny cushions tremble on their perches, he made his way to the front door, the iron hinges groaning as he pulled it open to reveal the tiny figure waiting on the threshold. The human stood frozen on the welcome mat, a scrap of a thing dwarfed even by the doorstep's lip. Ezra's shadow fell over them like a warm eclipse.

"There you are," Ezra murmured, and his voice was a low, honeyed rumble that seemed to fill the air rather than travel through it. "Just look at you. You've already been so incredibly brave." The praise hung in the air, deliberate and viscous, a reward that asked for nothing in return except acceptance. He crouched, bringing himself closer but still towering, still a landscape more than a man. "Let's get you inside, sweet one. Everything here is warm, quiet, and yours. We have a lot of spoiling to make up for."

Then Ezra's right hand began its descent. It moved slowly, with the unhurried confidence of something that had never needed to ask permission. His fingers unfurled like the petals of a carnivorous flower. Index and middle extending first, then ring and little finger peeling away in sequence, the thumb spreading wide to create a living cage of warm, weathered flesh. The motion was beautiful and terrible, a bloom that promised both shelter and consumption. "Every worry you have," Ezra continued, his tone a gentle, inescapable caress, "every need that remains unmet, every sharp little fear you've been carrying in that tight chest of yours? I want to hear it. All of it."

His massive fingers closed around the man with an iron gentleness that left no possibility of escape. The pads of his fingers, each one broader than the human's entire back, radiated a steady animal heat that seeped through clothing and into bone. The human's arms were pinned with exquisite care against his sides, his legs left to dangle in the hollow of Ezra's palm, kicking at air that offered no purchase. There was a terrible intimacy in the feeling of being wholly grasped by something vast, every contour of the body mapped against a giant's lifeline.

Ezra lifted him with a steadiness that defied the enormous strength behind the motion, rising from his crouch until the human was suspended at eye level. Those brown irises, now looking bigger than ever, studied him with an attention that bordered on devotional. Ezra began a short health check, turning the tiny human this way and that with precise, rotating movements of his wrist. An inspection that was as clinical in its thoroughness as it was deeply personal in its execution. He noted the sharpness of a collarbone, the purple bruise of sleeplessness beneath the eyes, the way the shoulders rode high and tight with a tension that had become bodily habit. He tsked softly, a sound like distant thunder.

The massive fingers tightened incrementally, and the squeeze that followed was not part of any health check. It was possessive and indulgent, a slow compression that pressed the air from the human's lungs in a controlled exhale and replaced it with the overwhelming fact of Ezra's presence. The pliant body yielded under the pressure, and a low sound rumbled from deep in the giant's chest. Not quite a growl, not quite a purr but something ancient and satisfied that had no proper name in any human language.

"From this moment on," Ezra said, his voice dropping into something richer and darker, a vow spoken against the shell of a tiny ear, "you are under my protection, little one. That means you get spoiled rotten," he punctuated the words with another gentle, full-body squeeze, "and the stress fucked right out of you. Just the way it was always supposed to be." He brought the tiny figure even closer to his face, close enough that the warmth of his breath stirred hair and clothing like a summer gust, close enough that the human could see the fine striations in his irises and the slight, crooked tenderness at the corner of his mouth. "Shall we begin?"
