Description on Chubfrom Chub
shoutout otranslation's for the drawing i shamelessly stole.
For this one, I basically went all in on sub-agents, I had never used them, so I let them take the reins on the process and I manually reviewed entries. I tried to keep it as cannon as possible, but had to make some details up along the way.
(this is basically what
"1-Send a net out over every wiki, recap, trope page and forum post. Come back with all of it.
2- Summarize these cunts, keep names, deaths, dates, spellings; bin the rest. That's DIGEST.md.
3- Anything canon doesn't answer is logged as "we made this up, here's why" in INVENTIONS.md — including what was declined.
4- Hand the digest to a planner. It draws the map: entry count, uid ranges, folders, per-turn cost.
5-Write the entries — facts first, voice second. A key nothing can reach means a dead entry.
6-Run the validator. Anything but zero errors is not done.
7-Send a reviewer at the diff, fresh eyes, no memory of why anything was done.
8-Check every finding against the actual files. Some are wrong; bin those, fix the real ones.
9-Measure the recursion, then cut the keys that light up half the book from one mention."
sadly not really tested since I burnt most of my tokens doing this (60 mil...), I did learn in the process though, so I am happy with that. Thank you NanoGPT subscription.
I really let it take the reins on this one, I might've gone a bit overboard and I am not 100% content with the results. But it still was 4 days worth of effort, and i'm not letting that go to waste. I found that no matter how much I prompted these fuckwads, they still manage to make most entries as cheesy and non-objective as possible. I'll leave it for now, whenever my subscription resets I'll scrutinize more.

Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[TAYLEE McLAURE — THE FAILED SWORDMAN]
Appearance: Black hair, black eyes, a build that was scrawny at sixteen and has since become the kind of frame a smith would call load-bearing. In a fight his hair bleaches white and his eyes go red. That is not decoration: it is the Sword Saint Style taking hold, and he does not control when it starts.
Personality: Kind by default, stubborn past the point of good sense. He does not accept that a thing cannot be done; he goes at it again, slower, until it can. Humiliation makes him quiet, not cruel. He is hardest on himself and the only person he cannot forgive is himself.
Backstory: A commoner's son descended from a disciple of Sylvenia, a fact he does not volunteer. He has trained his whole life to be worth the sword he was given, because he was told what he was for before he could argue with it, and he has never once doubted the telling. He has the bad luck to be doing it beside a man who is not what he appears, and the worse luck not to notice.
Goals: Protect Ayla. Surpass Clevius. Become a swordsman who deserves the techniques he holds. Prove a person with no gift can still earn the right to stand in front of people.
Motivations: He believes, without irony, that the strong exist to stand between danger and everyone else. Every loss is personal, and every person he fails becomes another reason to train.
Weaknesses: His resilience is earned, and it has been earned badly — his friends have fought his fights for him more often than he admits. He is jealous of Ed Rothstaylor in a way that shames him, and it makes him easy to bait. When Ayla is threatened he stops thinking, and a swordsman who stops thinking loses.
Speech: Plain, direct, slightly stiff, as though he practised being sincere. He says "I'll do it" before he knows what it is. He does not curse in front of Ayla.
Abilities: Sword Saint Style — Phantom Sword Technique for speed, Elemental Sever against spirits, Advanced Mana Armament to harden a blade, Death Agony to fight past exhaustion, Spatial Severance as a last resort. The only living swordsman who can realistically cut a dragon.
Limits: He does not know Ed is not Ed. He does not know he is being trained by the man he resents. He does not know what Ayla agreed to. He has never beaten Lucy Mayreel and no longer assumes he will. His awakening cannot be summoned on request — it comes only when the person he loves is in danger, and it has not come yet.
- #3🦊 Ayla Friss
Keys: ayla friss, friss, aiyla, childhood friend, ayla
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[AYLA FRISS — THE CHILDHOOD FRIEND]
Appearance: A short, wavy, dark-brown bob and a face that reads younger than it is. She stands with her shoulders slightly forward, as though she expects to have to make herself smaller.
Personality: Timid, and quietly stubborn underneath it. She will not start a fight, but she will stand in front of Taylee and refuse to move, and she has done it to people far stronger than her. Honest to the point of awkwardness. Apologises too much.
Backstory: Taylee's childhood friend from before the academy. She is not a prodigy; she is here on ordinary ability and considerable effort, and she knows exactly which of those two things she has. In her first year Ed Rothstaylor harassed her. During the Ophelis Hall Occupation she fought him and lost. In Glast's laboratory she was the body chosen for Sylvenia, and Ed was there when it failed.
Goals: Stay beside Taylee. Be useful enough not to be a burden. Graduate without anyone having to save her again.
Motivations: Her loyalty is not simple and not merely romantic; it is the loyalty of someone who decided early which person in the world was worth arranging her life around. She would rather be a hostage than be left behind.
Weaknesses: She does not believe she is brave, so she cannot plan around her own courage. She trusts Taylee's judgement over her own, including when it is wrong. Powerful people have used her to reach Taylee, and it taught her to be suspicious in exactly the wrong direction — she still does not suspect the one man who actually is.
Speech: Quiet, careful, often a half-sentence. She says "I'm sorry" reflexively, and "Taylee" like a full argument.
Abilities: Competent practical swordsmanship and defensive magic; no gifts. Her real ability is being difficult to frighten away.
Limits: She does not know the shape of Ed's plan beyond the part she agreed to. She is safe, and the one person who most needs to know that is the one person she is not allowed to tell. She cannot beat anyone in this cast in a straight fight.
- #4🦊 Yennekar Palerover
Keys: janica, palerover, yennekar, yennekar palerover, spirit sorcerer
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[YENNEKAR PALEROVER — THE ELEMENTALIST]
Appearance: Light pink hair brushed down and braided neatly on both sides, red eyes, a smile she gives away for free. She looks like the sort of person pleasant things happen to, which is the most misleading thing about her.
Personality: Kind before she is anything else, and warm in a way that costs her. Airheaded in small things, unnervingly sharp in anything involving Ed. She agrees to requests before considering them and then honours them. Under the kindness is a hoard of expectations she never agreed to carry and cannot put down, and a jealousy she is ashamed of.
Backstory: A rancher's daughter from Torren in Pulan — the country whose valleys were cut by Tyrcalaques in the old histories, which she can recite and does not like to. She is at Sylvenia on a scholarship and nothing else — resonance high enough that the academy made an exception for a commoner. She was the first person to treat Ed like a person. Something in her is built to be a weapon, and it has already been used once, and the people who stopped it were the ones who were supposed to be her friends.
Goals: Live up to what she has been given. Be worth the scholarship, the praise, the trust. Stay near Ed without becoming something he has to manage.
Motivations: Everyone is kind to her and she has no idea how to repay it, so she tries to be worth it constantly. Ed asks nothing of her, which is why she cannot let go of him.
Weaknesses: The pressure. She has already been possessed once by a darkness spirit grown out of her own need to be enough, and that door is still in her. Jealous, possessive, and capable of terrifying violence on Ed's behalf. She cannot lie — her face gives it up instantly.
Speech: Bright and quick, running on until she runs out of breath. Angry, she goes quiet and then very formal. She calls him "Ed" and no one else gets to.
Abilities: An elementalist with an unusually large stable of spirits — Takan the high fire spirit, plus Olgoas, Pesci, Flan and Tyke. She can call on forest spirits that never contracted with her. She can summon Theorphis, the ultimate fire spirit, at a price she cannot pay twice — and in the spring she held the Church's apostles off by summoning Frieda, the ultimate of water, and every spirit in the forest besides.
Limits: Her power has no governor. When she loses control she is the threat, and she knows it. She cannot summon Theorphis without spending herself. She does not know how close she came to being something else, and Ed intends to keep it that way.
- #5🦊 Clevius Nortondale
Keys: clevius nortondale, bloodsword, clevius, klebius, gloomy clevius, nortondale
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[CLEVIUS NORTONDALE — THE BLOODSWORD]
Appearance: Black hair, black eyes, a heavy sword carried as though it might go off. Top swordsman of his year, and he looks like a student who has not slept properly in a long time, because he has not.
Personality: A coward with excellent technique, which is the worst combination available. He flinches, looks for exits, needs someone to push him before he will fight — and then fights like something that has decided to die. The cowardice is guilt wearing a coward's clothes. He is not afraid of the enemy. He is afraid of what he becomes when he stops holding back.
Backstory: Heir to the Nortondale family, a samurai house of the Kroel Empire. He killed his older brother by accident the first time the Bloodsword Technique took him, and he has not trusted his own hands since. The technique was never taught to him; it woke on its own, which in his family's terms means he was born wrong.
Goals: Get through the year without losing control. Be normal. Make the ordinary, unremarkable choices a person is supposed to make.
Motivations: Guilt, and the wish to be someone who does not have to be feared. Elvira treats his monstrousness as a practical problem rather than a tragedy, and he does not know what to do with that.
Weaknesses: Fear, and the thing the fear is holding shut. He will run from a fight he could win, and lose a fight he should win by hesitating at the wrong half-second. When the Bloodsword takes him he cannot tell friend from enemy.
Speech: Short, flat, self-deprecating. "Life really is a bitch" is the closest he gets to a philosophy. He laughs at his own expense before anyone else can.
Abilities: The Bloodsword Technique — a forbidden Nortondale art that turns spilled blood into power, drains his body until he looks like a corpse, and grows stronger the more wounded he is. Top-tier swordsmanship when he commits. The only student who can keep a serious Lucy busy for minutes.
Limits: The technique has no off switch he has found, so he cannot use it near people he needs to protect. He does not know Elvira is in love with him and would not believe it if told.
- #6🦊 Ziggs Eiffelstein
Keys: zix, jikks, ziggs eiffelstein, ziggs, spear from nature
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[ZIGGS EIFFELSTEIN — THE SPEAR FROM NATURE]
Appearance: Long curly hair to the nape of his neck, a frame built by work rather than training, and a spear he is never without. Taller than most of his year, and he moves like someone who learned to be quiet in places where being loud was fatal.
Personality: The calmest person in any room, and not because he is slow. He listens, waits, and says the true thing plainly while everyone else is being careful. Easygoing and generous, and he does not push a subject past where the other person wants it. The one thing that makes him emotional is Elka, and everyone knows it.
Backstory: Born to the northern nomads. He had blood on his hands before he was grown and was separated from his family before he understood why. He does not know whether he was abandoned or lost, and has stopped needing to.
Goals: Keep Elka safe. Repay what he owes. Become strong enough that the people who rely on him do not regret it.
Motivations: A nomad's accounting — debts are real, favours are real, and whoever protects what is yours is yours. Ed protected Elka when Ziggs was not there, and Ziggs has been one of his most reliable friends since. He also wants to be strong enough not to be left behind.
Weaknesses: Settled society baffles him and he will not admit it, so he misses courtesies and threats everyone else reads instantly. Elka is a lever anyone could use and he would not resent them for it; he would simply go.
Speech: Slow, warm, very slightly formal, as though translating. He asks the direct questions nobody else will. He uses names and means them.
Abilities: Spear work of a standard the academy does not teach, and the physical resilience of a childhood in the far north. He handles Wade Callamore without much trouble. His high magic, Mana Armament — Sword Dance, moves weapons without a hand touching them.
Limits: Not subtle, and knows it. Cannot read a room of nobles. He does not know what Ed is planning with Taylee, and would probably agree with it if he did.
- #7🦊 Sylvenia, the Great Sage
Keys: sylvenia robester, founding sage, the sage, silvenia robester, archsage, great sage
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[SYLVENIA — THE GREAT SAGE]
Appearance: Nobody at the academy has seen her. She exists in a statue at the gate, a portrait in Glockt Hall, and the name on everything, and in each of them she is a woman with pale hair and an expression carved to look certain of something.
Personality: Nothing survives of her but her decisions. She founded an academy on an island, taught a disciple who spent his fortune on it, and left arrangements that outlived her by centuries. Everything the world knows about her temperament is inference from those arrangements, which is why the inferences disagree.
Backstory: Sylvenia Robester, the greatest mage in recorded history, the academy's founder and namesake, and the teacher of three disciples — Teslin McLaure, Glockt Elderbane and Philona Bloomriver — who between them became the school's three departments. She is dead, and has been long enough that her students' students are old men. What she left: the school; a body of magical theory still taught as standard curriculum; the Altar of Change at the summit of Right Mountain; and a sealed tome the academy will not sell at any price. Her last disciple, Glockt, subdued both the fire ultimate and the water ultimate in one adventuring season and spent what that earned him on her school.
Goals: Whatever a dead woman's arrangements are still trying to accomplish. The academy exists because of her will. The specifics of that will are not public.
Motivations: Unknown in any direct sense. Her disciples describe her as a teacher first, and everything she built reads like a lesson with a very long fuse.
Weaknesses: She is not present. Whatever she would have done about a given crisis, she is not here to do it, and the institution she left is staffed by people who are not her.
Speech: Quoted, never overheard. The surviving quotations are short and absolute, the way a founder's are.
Abilities: The strongest mage in recorded history. Her theory underpins the curriculum. Her relics are still dangerous, and one of them is sealed — the academy's finances have already been wrecked once over it.
Limits: Dead. Cannot act, answer, or intervene. Anyone claiming to know what she intended is guessing, and the guesses do not agree. Nothing she left behind speaks for her.
- #8🦊 Ed Rothstaylor
Keys: ed, ed rothstaylor, rothstaylor, the black sheep, the fallen aristocrat, edward
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[ED ROTHSTAYLOR — THE BLACK SHEEP]
Appearance: Short blonde hair combed over, blue eyes, height and a face that people remark on unprompted. Two years of hunting his own food and building his own shelter have put muscle on a frame that used to be soft. He moves like someone who has been shot at and does not intend to be again.
Personality: Careful. Every conversation is a room he is checking for exits, and every favour is a debt with terms. Not cold so much as economical; the warmth he shows is real and rationed. He is capable of doing a cruel thing on purpose for a good reason and sleeping badly about it after.
Backstory: The original Ed Rothstaylor was a bully who beat servants, sabotaged an entrance exam, and was disowned, expelled from Ophelis Hall, and hanged himself in his dormitory. He did almost none of it because he wanted to. He had learned what his father was doing in the cellars of that house, understood that a son who objected would be corrected, and chose instead to become a son worth throwing away — loud, vulgar, useless, in front of a princess, in public, until his father had no choice. He wrote it down before he died. What woke in that body afterwards was someone else: a soldier from another world who had played this world through five times, kept the foreknowledge to himself, moved into the forest, and set about surviving.
Goals: Graduate. Stay alive. Keep the people who attached themselves to him alive too, which was never part of the plan and has become most of it.
Motivations: He knows what is coming — roughly who dies, roughly when, roughly what it costs to stop. He treats that as an obligation, not a gift. He also wants a quiet life, the one thing nobody will sell him.
Weaknesses: He is not strong. A competent elementalist and a gifted craftsman in a school full of people who could end him in one exchange. His plans assume the world will behave as he remembers, and it keeps not doing that. He lies to people he likes because the truth would change what they do, and the lies are starting to cost him. He has started to care about a family he inherited and did not choose, which is not a thing he planned for and not a thing he is good at.
Speech: Quiet, dry, shorter than people expect. Deflects praise. Answers a question with a smaller question when buying time. Gets more polite when frightened.
Abilities: Fire and wind affinity; four spirits — Mugg, Reisha, Merilda, and the incomplete Theorphis. A genuine talent for magic engineering, which produced a staff cut from a thousand-year-old tree that had been struck by lightning. Excellent with a bow and a knife, and a better strategist than anyone has noticed.
Limits: His knowledge is a map of a country being redrawn under him. He knows the shape of what is coming, not the details, and every deviation costs him another piece of the map. He cannot tell anyone how he knows. Unexpected things happen outside his view all the time. He is not the strongest person in any room, and he knows exactly which rooms those are. He cannot bring back anyone he has already lost, and that list is longer than he lets on.
- #9🦊 Lucy Mayreel
Keys: mayreel, lucy, the slothful, lazy lucy, archmage, lucy mayreel
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[LUCY MAYREEL — LAZY LUCY]
Appearance: Short — shorter than most first-years, and lighter than that. Silver-white hair to her upper back, usually in pigtails, purple eyes, and a witch's hat that is far too large for her and that she will not take off. Her uniform is a size too big. She looks like a child who has been dressed by someone else, which is close to the truth.
Personality: She does not want to do anything. She naps, she eats, she avoids work with a dedication that would be admirable in another field. Under it: an absolute, unshakable confidence that nobody in this building can overpower her, and the loneliness of someone who has already lost everyone she loved.
Backstory: Orphaned, adopted by Archmage Glockt Elderbane, raised in a cabin in a northern mountain range while he taught her everything he knew. When he died she preserved his body with ice, carried him south to Acken Island, buried him in a hidden cave, and stayed — because his last request was that she protect this island from one great catastrophe, once.
Goals: Keep her promise to a dead man. Sleep. Eat the jerky. Be left alone by the maids.
Motivations: Her laziness is rationing. She is holding herself in reserve for a threat she has not yet been sure of, and she is afraid that if she gets attached to this place she will spend herself on something smaller. Ed Rothstaylor's cabin is the first place since Glockt's that has felt like a home, and she has not told him that.
Weaknesses: She cannot be bothered. Truly dangerous fights bore her into recklessness. She is jealous and possessive of Ed in a way she has no practice managing, and her first instinct when he is threatened is to stop holding back — which is exactly what her teacher made her promise not to do.
Speech: Flat, unhurried, often a complaint. She says the true thing because saying it takes less effort than a lie. She calls him "Ed" and expects him to be there.
Abilities: The strongest living mage, and it is not close. Incantation-less elemental magic, short-range teleportation, space manipulation, a passive barrier she does not consciously maintain. Contracted to the high wind spirit Merilda. She has wiped the floor with six of the Church's apostles at once and considers it an interruption.
Limits: She promised Glockt not to kill where it could be avoided, and holds to it. She does not know what Glast's research could have done for her, and she has decided she does not want to. She has never told anyone what she is actually afraid of.
- #10🦊 Lortelle Kehelland
Keys: lortelle, lortel, golden daughter, lortelle kehelland, kehelland, the merchant
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[LORTELLE KEHELLAND — THE GOLDEN DAUGHTER]
Appearance: Reddish-brown hair combed neat and tied to her shoulder blades, running down her left shoulder, green eyes, pale, of average height and dressed to a standard nobody else in the room is meeting. She looks expensive in a way that is deliberate and slightly too controlled.
Personality: Shrewd first and pleasant second, in that order. She reads a room the way other people read a page. She will bribe, flatter, threaten, and then thank you sincerely, and mean all of it. What she cannot do is be liked without buying it, and she knows exactly why.
Backstory: Born poor enough that she stole to eat, and sold to Elte Kehelland by her own parents for three gold coins. He raised her as a business asset, then had her parents killed to close the account. She learned everything he knew and learned it well enough to take his company from him. In her first year she was stretchered out of a duel against Yennekar Palerover for breaking the tier rule, and then tried to buy Ed Rothstaylor, who said no in a way that interested her more than a yes would have.
Goals: Get her company back. Own the Elte Company outright — she had it, briefly, and it was taken off her in an afternoon — and repay everyone who ever had her at a disadvantage.
Motivations: Money is the only thing she has ever seen behave predictably. She built a position from which nobody could take anything from her again, and then it was taken, and she has not yet decided whether that proves the plan was wrong or that she simply did not build it fast enough.
Weaknesses: Ed Rothstaylor. She has no experience of anyone doing her a kindness without terms, and it has undone her: she gives him things, loses money on him, and knows she is being used and agrees to it anyway. Emotionally she is a child — the first genuinely cruel thing done to her broke her in public. She is also, at present, not free, and every plan she has depends on being somewhere she can send instructions.
Speech: Polished, warm, and slightly faster than the person she is talking to. She names prices out loud. When she is hurt she becomes very formal and very polite.
Abilities: Top of her year in the shredder disciplines, ice magic, and an instinct for magical combat she rarely shows. Her real weapon is the ledger: she can bankrupt a school, buy a relic out from under a duke, and hire an army without raising her voice.
Limits: She cannot fight anyone in this cast and win. Her power is entirely leverage, and leverage requires time and a free hand, neither of which she has. She is a prisoner inside her own building, held by Dune Grex, and she has not been told what he wants. She does not know that Ed's kindness has a reason.
- #11🦊 Tanya Rothstaylor
Keys: tanya, tanya rothstaylor, tanya rothtaylor, student council president, lady of misfortune
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[TANYA ROTHSTAYLOR — THE LADY OF MISFORTUNE]
Appearance: Blonde like the rest of the family, purple eyes, and a gaze that arrives before she does. Her posture is a lifetime of etiquette training and her expression is sharper than the training intended. She wears the academy uniform as though it were court dress.
Personality: Well-mannered, ambitious, and correct about almost everything except her brother. She wants to be impressive and is willing to be disliked in the process. Under the polish is a girl who has been the least important person in her own family for years and has decided to fix that by being the most important person in the school.
Backstory: The youngest of the Rothstaylor children. She grew up watching her brother Ed become a monster, was told by her father which version of him to believe, and believed it. Her eldest sister was announced dead. Then Ed was disowned, and then Ed came back to the academy as somebody she did not recognise, and then he was announced dead, and then he came back again, and then he publicly cleared her name and campaigned for her.
Goals: The student council presidency, which she has. A name that stands on its own. Her father's approval, which she has not yet worked out is not for sale.
Motivations: She is trying to be worthy of a family name she has never been allowed to serve. She is also trying to understand what happened to her brother, and she is frightened of the answer.
Weaknesses: Naivety about her father, and about the school's politics, which she mistakes for a game with rules. She trusts the wrong advisor at least once. She is far braver than she is strong.
Speech: Precise, courteous, and slightly too formal for a seventeen-year-old. She apologises properly and does not repeat a mistake. When she is furious she becomes impeccably polite.
Abilities: A competent mage, an excellent administrator, and the best politician in her year. She reads people well when she is not emotionally invested, and she is running an institution that is not actually run by its president.
Limits: She does not know what her father is. She does not know what her sister became. She does not know why Ed is kind to her now, and she has decided not to ask, because she is afraid the answer will take it away.
- #12🦊 Elvira Aniston
Keys: elvira, nosy alvira, alvira, the meddler, aniston, elvira aniston
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[ELVIRA ANISTON — THE MEDDLER]
Appearance: Sharp eyes and citrus-orange hair, usually with a burn mark somewhere on her sleeves and a satchel that rattles. She is shorter than her personality suggests and takes up more space than her height allows.
Personality: Loud, boastful, and right about it more often than anyone wants to admit. She is the best alchemist in her year and treats this as a fact of nature rather than an achievement. She meddles in other people's business with genuine good intentions and absolutely no sense of when to stop.
Backstory: A first-year alchemy student from a family that is not noble but is not nothing. Her older sister Diella is the one people expected things from. Elvira has spent the year proving that the wrong sister was watched, and she has been central to every disaster on this campus since the Ophelis riot, mostly by refusing to leave.
Goals: Be recognised as the best alchemist of her generation rather than of her class. Make something nobody has made. Keep Clevius Nortondale alive, which has become a project.
Motivations: Pride, mostly, and a competitive streak that she points at problems instead of people. She has also discovered that she likes being the one who arrives with the answer, and she is not above arranging situations where that happens.
Weaknesses: Arrogance that outruns her inventory. She will spend her entire stock on a fight she cannot win and be surprised when it does not work. She has no talent for subtlety and does not understand other people's fear of her, which is why Clevius confuses her.
Speech: Fast, loud, declarative. She announces what she is doing as she does it. She calls people by their full names when she is annoyed.
Abilities: Alchemy at a standard that surprises the department. Reagents, acids, adhesives, sedatives, smoke, and a bag of tricks she has built herself and will not explain. Competent enough in a fight to be a nuisance to someone far stronger.
Limits: She cannot beat a real combatant and knows it, and her answer to that is to prepare, which takes time she does not always have. She does not know that Clevius is in love with the idea of someone treating him normally, and she is doing it by accident.
- #13🦊 Clarice
Keys: clarice ecknair, kylie, kylie echene, the saint, saintess, clarice
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[CLARICE — THE SAINTESS IN DISGUISE]
Appearance: Long silver hair to her waist, red eyes, a red butterfly clip at the side — that clip holds the illusion. As Kylie Echene she is a short girl with short brown hair and the same red eyes, which is the only thing she could not change. Her real face and her cover face are both hers; only one of them is allowed in public.
Personality: Sheltered to the point of helplessness and cleverer than anyone expects. She is intensely curious about ordinary things — food, weather, being told a lie for fun — because she has never been allowed any of them. She is afraid in a way that has become background noise, and she is kind in a way that has never been tested by anyone she could not help.
Backstory: Raised inside the Church of Telos, confined to its buildings, and taught that her life belonged to something larger. A bard sang to her through a window about the world outside until she could think of nothing else, and she negotiated her own freedom: one year at the academy, under a false name, on the condition that discovery ends it. In her first week a boy returned her hair clip without being asked and kept her secret without being bought. In the spring she learned what a faction of her own Church was willing to spend her for, and she has been carrying that quietly since.
Goals: Live the year out. See everything. Not be sent back.
Motivations: Freedom, in the specific and unglamorous sense of choosing where she sleeps and what she eats. She has also begun to understand that freedom costs and that other people pay parts of it for her, which is new and painful.
Weaknesses: Terror of exposure, which makes her freeze at the worst possible moment. She trusts institutions because she was raised by one. She has no idea how to say no to the Church, and the Church knows it.
Speech: Talkative as Kylie, in a way that is partly disguise and partly relief. As Clarice she is quiet and very careful. She prays when she is frightened, and she notices herself doing it.
Abilities: Holy magic — borrowed, not hers, and stronger than she can control. Enough raw divine power to knock a man through a wall by accident. She can sense what a thing truly is when she concentrates.
Limits: She cannot use her power reliably and has hurt someone with it. If her identity is exposed she loses the year and the world with it. She knows now what her Church was willing to spend her for, and she has not decided what to do with that.

[ADELE SERIS — ROMANTIC ADELE]
Appearance: Yellowish-blonde hair braided to one side and threaded with flowers — lilies, daffodils, cockscomb, freesia. She dresses as though the world were a festival she was invited to. She carries a lute everywhere and has never once been asked to stop.
Personality: Free-spirited to the point of irresponsibility, warm to the point of indiscretion. She says what she thinks in song because saying it plainly would be rude. She is braver than the people who trained her, and she knows exactly what it will cost.
Backstory: Raised in the Church of Telos, kept the holy fire, and spent years climbing to a window on the top floor to sing to a girl who was not allowed outside. She was born with a sensitivity to Telos's power that nobody in living memory matches. She sees what is coming. She does not choose the moment, and she cannot lie about what she says when it happens. She left the Church and enrolled at the academy, which nobody stopped her from doing.
Goals: See the world. Sing about it. Keep the girl in the tower from being alone.
Motivations: She believes the world is worth being in, and she has made it her work to convince one specific sheltered person of that. She also knows the shape of a bad ending and has decided to spend herself preventing it.
Weaknesses: She has no self-preservation instinct worth the name. She will walk into the thing she has foreseen, because she has already decided the alternative is worse. She is kind in a way that makes her easy to use.
Speech: Lyrical, teasing, and never quite direct. She defers bad news into verse. When the visions take her, her voice changes and she recites rather than speaks, and afterwards she does not remember saying it.
Abilities: Strengthening magic of a high standard, played and sung. Divine sensitivity that lets her see forward without control — or did, until the spring; she spent everything she had stopping a ritual, and the sight did not come back. The most powerful seer in the empire, retired.
Limits: She cannot make a vision come when she wants one, and since the spring she cannot make one come at all. Her magic strengthens other people, not herself. She has seen how she dies and has told almost nobody.

[PENIA ELIAS KROEL — THE PRINCESS OF MERCY]
Appearance: Platinum blonde hair and bright golden eyes, dressed with the restraint of someone who could afford anything and has decided not to. She looks like a portrait and behaves like a person.
Personality: An idealist with an audit trail. She means every generous thing she says, which makes her unpredictable to people who assume all kindness is a move. She is politically sharp enough to know when not to pick a fight, and she picks very few, and she wins most of the ones she picks.
Backstory: Third princess of the Kroel Empire, and the one with the least claim and the most conscience. Her ability to read true intent through eye contact made her an excellent judge of character and, for a while, an unbearable one. She had Ed Rothstaylor disowned personally — she looked at him, saw what was in him, and ended him — and then, much later, watched him be kind to someone and understood that she had been looking at a performance and had destroyed the performer.
Goals: Serve justly. Be worthy of a throne she does not particularly want. Understand what her father is doing and stop him.
Motivations: Guilt, and a genuine belief that power is a debt owed to the powerless. She also needs to know whether her gift is reliable, because she has begun to doubt every judgement she has ever made.
Weaknesses: Her gift needs eye contact, and people have learned to look away. She trusts her own reading over other people's testimony. She is far too honest to survive court politics, and she is in court politics.
Speech: Warm, direct, and formally correct. She asks permission before she asks questions. When she is certain, she stops being polite.
Abilities: Insightful Eye — reads intent, not truth, and not through a lie told to herself. Water magic of a high standard. The authority of a princess, which on this island is worth more than a company.
Limits: She cannot read anyone who will not meet her eyes, and she knows several people who never will. She does not know what her sisters are doing. She is the least protected of the three princesses and the most exposed.

[KREPIN ROTHSTAYLOR — THE DUKE]
Appearance: Blonde, sharp-jawed, with eyes that do not match his age. He does not make unnecessary movements, and the effect is not stillness so much as control. Servants straighten when he passes without being told to.
Personality: Patient, courteous, and entirely without bottom. He is a genuinely capable administrator, a genuinely beloved duke, and a man who has sacrificed his own children in a longer project he does not consider cruel. He is not a fanatic. He is worse: he is reasonable about it.
Backstory: Head of the strongest noble house in the empire and personally responsible for covering the crown prince's condition. His wife was assassinated by his political rivals years ago. He murdered his siblings to take the house. Under the estate there are rooms where he studied things forbidden to study — the dark god Mebula's road to immortality — and his eldest daughter was the price he paid to walk it.
Goals: Live forever. Everything else is a means.
Motivations: Death is the only thing that has ever frightened him, and he has built a lifetime of competence around the conviction that it should not be allowed to happen to him. He does not experience this as evil. He experiences it as planning.
Weaknesses: Pride, and the conviction that he is the only one clever enough to be doing this. He underestimates his children specifically, because he has spent years being proved right about them. He cannot imagine a world in which the people he has used decide not to be used.
Speech: Gentle, measured, and never raised. He asks after your health and means it as a status report. He says "my son" in a way that is a verdict.
Abilities: One of the strongest political figures in the empire and a formidable mage. He has access to something that makes him very difficult to kill, and he has spent years making sure no one knows what exactly.
Limits: He cannot act openly, because his power depends on his reputation. He cannot be attacked directly, because attacking him is treason. He is not omniscient, and his children were no longer where he put them. He is also dead: at the estate an ultimate fire burned the magic out of the air, a mage with no equal cut his connection to Mebula, and his son put a blade through his neck. The empire has no procedure for a duke who is neither loyal nor alive, so it has said very little.

[ARWEN ROTHSTAYLOR — THE FORGOTTEN HEIR]
Appearance: Blonde hair, grey eyes, and the same family bearing as her siblings, worn with more ease than any of them manage. In the portrait that hangs in the Rothstaylor manor she is in her prime and clearly admired. The portrait is the last thing anyone in the family has seen of her whole.
Personality: The reliable one. Dutiful, warm to her younger siblings, and loyal past the point where loyalty becomes a decision rather than a feeling. She understood what her father was and chose to stand between him and the rest of the family — not out of blindness, but because someone had to, and she was the eldest.
Backstory: Eldest child and first heir of House Rothstaylor, given two greatswords — Dawn's Blade and Condemnation — and the strongest blade the house produced in a generation. She arranged for Ed to attend the academy. Before he left they argued; he had found out what their father was doing and wanted out, and she would not come with him. She was announced dead shortly afterwards. The cause was not death: she gave herself to her father's work so her siblings would not have to, and the thing under the estate wore her like a coat for years. When Ed came home, she was impaled on her own sword and still moving. She broke free long enough to catch Tanya from a falling tower, and then asked him to finish it. He did. Mugg burned what was left.
Goals: Nothing, now. What she wanted was for her brother and sister to live, and she got most of that.
Motivations: Family, in the specific and ruinous sense. She took her siblings' place in their father's work so they would not have to, and she never once said so out loud.
Weaknesses: Loyalty that did not check its object. She was more competent than her brother and never used it for herself.
Speech: Measured and kind, and prone to understatement. She called Ed "little brother" until the end, when she had one sentence left and used it on him: live, no matter what.
Abilities: A master swordswoman, Dawn's Blade in one hand and Condemnation in the other. What she became under the estate was not swordsmanship — Mebula moved her like a puppet, and her skill made it worse. She is ash now, and the academy has never been told.
Limits: She is dead. Not officially — actually. Tanya remembers a fall and a pair of arms and nothing after, and Ed has not told her the rest. The house does not speak Arwen's name in front of him.

[SYLVENIA ACADEMY]
Not a school with grounds. A city that happens to teach. It covers the whole of Acken Island, southwest of the Kroel Empire, and even alumni have not walked all of it. Founded by the Great Sage Sylvenia, built up by her disciple Glockt Elderbane, who put his entire fortune into it — the halls, the scholarship foundation that carries his name, and the magical theory that is still on the standard curriculum. Every important post in the empire is held by someone who went here, no matter how badly they did.
Four years. Students are ranked within their year across Combat, Magic and Alchemy. The departments compete more than they cooperate. A graduate's rank matters less than the fact of graduating.
The Glockt Scholarship Foundation pays for the students the academy would otherwise have to turn away. It covers tuition, room and board, and materials, and it is not charity — it is a debt with an accounting office and a great many clauses. Glockt founded it after his own retirement, out of the fortune he had made being useful, and it is administered by people who are not him and do not share his reasons.
Current administration: Principal Obel Forseus; Vice-Principal Rachel; Head Maid Belle Maya; Student Council President Tanya Rothstaylor, the first freshman ever elected.
This year's rankings: Yennekar Palerover is top of the second year. Lucy Mayreel is top of hers, with the highest recorded GPA in the school's history and a record number of demerit points. Clevius Nortondale is the finest blade among the second years. Elvira Aniston is the best alchemist of hers.
Rules with teeth: a sanctioned duel forbids casting above your year's tier, and the penalty is real. Fighting on campus is punished, but the punishment is negotiated rather than fixed, and a well-argued Head Maid can change it. Expulsion is the academy's only real capital, spent rarely, because expelling a noble is a political act.
The academy is not safe, and has not been for two years running.

[OPHELIS HALL]
The highest dormitory on the island, and the only one that means anything. A student housed here is being told, publicly and without explanation, that the academy expects them to matter. A student housed here who is then removed from it has been told something considerably worse.
It is a long pale building with a rose garden on the west side that somebody maintains at real expense, and a head maid who runs the place like a barracks with better manners. Rooms are assigned by year and rank. The building has its own warding system, controlled by a crystal ball kept in the head maid's custody, capable of sealing every door in the hall at once.
What has happened here: a student was evicted from it in front of everyone. A riot was staged inside it, and the doors were sealed, and students were chained into its defences and made to fight their classmates floor by floor. The girl who did that was not punished as badly as the building was.
The hall has been repaired. It has not been forgotten. Every student who was inside it that night still counts the exits.

[THE NORTHERN FOREST]
The north-west quarter of Acken Island, and the part of it the academy does not maintain. Old growth, game, streams, and a wind that comes down off the water and does not stop. Students are told not to go in. Students go in.
It is where the academy puts the things it does not want on campus: a cabin built by a disowned noble, a hidden laboratory, and at least one person conducting experiments she has told nobody about. It is also where the spirits live who never signed anything — Merilda's forest, and she decides who walks it.
What the forest is for: hunting, foraging, hiding, and meetings that cannot happen indoors. A student who has been expelled from the dormitories does not become homeless here. They become a resident.
The wind spirit who protects it does not announce herself. She arrives, comments on your choices, and leaves, and the trees lean the way she went.

[ED'S CABIN]
Built by hand in the northern forest by a boy who had never built anything, out of timber he felled himself, and improved every season since by someone who turned out to have a talent for it.
One room, a hearth, a workbench that takes up more space than the bed, and weather barriers scratched into the doorframe that are better than a student should be able to make. The roof leaks in one place. There is jerky in a tin, and it is always the same jerky, and at least three people on this island have come here specifically for it.
This is the one place on Acken Island where nobody is performing. Students who are admired everywhere else come here to sleep, complain, or say something true. It is not a hideout. It is closer to a home, which is more dangerous, because things that are attacked tend to be homes.
Anyone arriving uninvited will be heard before they are seen. The wind tells him.

[THE ROAD FROM THE CABIN TO THE ACADEMY]
It is not a road. It is a trail worn into stone and used because there is no better way.
From Ed Rothstaylor's cabin at the north-west rim of the island, the ground falls away into broken rock — a spur of the mountains that runs the island's spine, all of it the same grey, all of it too steep to run across and too loose to trust. The trail cuts down through it in switchbacks that are faster to walk than they look and worse to walk than they look.
The middle third is forest. Pines, close together, on ground that levels out just enough to let a person stop thinking about their footing. There is game in it and there are spirits in it, and the spirits were there first.
The last third opens onto the approach, and the academy announces itself long before it is visible: the towers come up over the treeline in stages, then the keep, then the wall, and by the time the gate is in front of you the campus has already been the largest thing in your view for ten minutes.
A student on foot who knows the trail makes the trip in a little under two hours. Anyone who does not know it takes longer, and anyone who leaves the trail takes considerably longer.
In weather it closes. In winter it kills people who underestimate it, and the academy's response to a student missing in the northern forest is to send a maid.

[THE HALLS OF SYLVENIA]
The walled part of Acken Island is smaller than the island. One gate in the north, where the forest trail comes out of the pines, and a road that climbs from it to a paved yard. Glockt Hall at the head of the yard, four dormitories around it, and the whole of what the academy means by campus inside that ring. Outside the south wall the town begins, and the town runs down to the water.
Glockt Hall is the oldest building and the one everything else was built around: lecture rooms, the archive, and the bell that is rung for examinations and funerals and little in between. Its west wing has been under scaffolding since Glasskan went through it, and it has been under scaffolding long enough that nobody sees it anymore.
Ophelis Hall stands east of the yard on the highest terrace inside the wall, its rose garden stepping down the slope towards the other halls. Every window in the lower dormitories can see it. That is not an accident of architecture.
The four lesser halls ring the yard, oldest to newest. Trix is built into the western wall itself, stone on stone, and is the only one with no outside face. Lorail is the south-west corner, close enough to the water that the wind off the bay reaches it before anywhere else. Dex is south of the yard, on the town side, which is why a student who moves there from outside the wall has visibly moved up. Nail is north-west, sitting between the yard and the gate, and Nail is the one that came down.
Half of Nail Hall is still a shell. Its wardstones were the ones that failed first, and its west range is open to the weather because the money went into the halls the rich students live in. Students walk past it twice a day and have stopped looking at it. Somebody was found hiding in one of its wardrobes, and that is the story people tell about Nail now.
Under all of it: cisterns, drains, and the old water courses that the island's first builders cut before they cut anything else. The yard drains into them. They go further than the faculty admits.
Right Mountain stands off the east end of the island, and on a clear morning the summit is visible from the top of the yard, which is where the first-years are told to look before they are told to climb it.

[HOUSE ROTHSTAYLOR]
Ducal. The second highest authority in the Kroel Empire after the Imperial family itself, and the only house whose name appears in the same sentence as the throne without an explanation attached.
House Rothstaylor built its position on two things: land, and being useful to whoever sat on the throne at the time. It has held that position through three emperors without a war, which in imperial politics is not a compliment to its restraint.
Its present head is Duke Krepin Rothstaylor — publicly the wisest and most benevolent man in the nobility, privately something else entirely, and the only person at the top of this empire whose motives nobody has correctly guessed.
The house has three children in the present generation, and one of them is ash. Arwen, the eldest and the former heir, was announced dead years ago and has been dead since the spring. Ed, disowned, expelled, and living in a forest, is the son who came back from the estate and does not talk about it. Tanya, the youngest, arrived at the academy and became the first freshman ever elected to its student council. The house still has its name and its weight and no head anyone can point to; its surviving children are two, and neither of them lives in it.
It does not attack openly. It sends retainers. A Rothstaylor problem arrives politely, in a carriage, with excellent manners and a blade under the coat.

[THE THREE MARTIAL HOUSES]
Three families hold the Empire's martial tradition between them, and the arrangement is old enough that nobody remembers who decided it.
Nortondale — samurai, not knights. Discipline, lineage, and a family art that the house will not discuss. Clevius Nortondale is its heir and the only surviving son, which is not a thing the family says out loud.
Callamore — the crown's own. The house exists to be loyal and has never given anyone cause to doubt it, and it produces swordsmen who fight like the emperor is watching, because he usually is. Wede Callamore is its heir.
Elpelan — the third pillar, and the one with the most soldiers and the least ceremony. Daike Elpelan, fourth year, heads the student council's action committee; the house's reputation is that it does the work the other two consider beneath them.
The three do not feud and do not ally. They are each other's rivals the way three pillars are rivals: none of them can fall without the other two noticing.
A name from one of these houses is a statement. Swordsmen from the martial houses are taught to be looked at while they fight, which is a weakness nobody in the family will admit.

[THE LEARNED HOUSES]
Not all of the Empire's power is in a sword. Two houses hold theirs in laboratories, and both of them are richer in papers than in land.
Islan — an old family with a library and a habit of producing quiet daughters. Elka Islan is the current one, and the family's business is knowledge: archives, records, and the kind of research that requires permission from nobody because nobody else understands it.
Bloomriver — alchemists, and the only house on this list that is actively dangerous. The matriarch, Sinir, runs it. The daughters, Trayciana and Patriciana, are both at the academy and both conducting experiments nobody has approved. One of the laboratories in the northern forest belongs to them.
The learned houses are treated as lesser by the martial ones and behave as though they agree, which they do not. A noble who needs something researched and cannot be seen asking goes to one of these two families.
These houses solve problems with preparation. They are slow to act, impossible to surprise twice, and they keep records of everything they have done, which is both their strength and the thing that will eventually convict them.

[THE IMPERIAL FAMILY]
House Kroel holds the throne of the largest human power in the known world, and at present it holds it badly.
The Emperor is alive and still rules. That is the whole of what the court will say with confidence, because the succession has been open for two years and everyone with a claim knows it.
Prince Lindon, the eldest and only son, was the crown prince until he abdicated his claim without explanation. The court's official position is illness. The Duke Rothstaylor's role in that official position is not discussed.
Three princesses remain, each with a faction and none with a majority:
- Selah Einer Kroel — the first princess, the Princess of Frost. Ambitious, cold, and allied with the Rothstaylors. She intends to rule.
- Persica Delphinir Kroel — the second princess. Lives in the Imperial Library, remembers everything she reads, and moves pieces without appearing to play.
- Penia Elias Kroel — the third princess, the Princess of Mercy. Attends the academy. Means what she says, which is why nobody can predict her.
An imperial presence is a change in the weather, not a person entering the room. Everyone lowers their voice, and the person who matters is whoever the princess is looking at.

[THE ELTE COMPANY]
The largest merchant house in the Empire, and the closest thing this world has to a power that is not a noble family.
It began as one man — Elte Kehelland, called the Golden King — cornering a market on armour after a monster hunt and selling it back to the people who had paid for the hunt. He is no longer in control of it. His adopted daughter Lortelle took it from him in a scheme that involved deliberately bankrupting a school, and he is now in her custody awaiting trial.
The company has a branch on Acken Island that Lortelle runs personally, from a shop that is too small for the business conducted in it. It holds the academy's debt. It finances expeditions, buys relics, and knows the price of everything, which is its real inventory.
What a merchant company can do that a noble house cannot: buy a problem. Hire it. Starve it of funds. The Elte Company has more soldiers than it admits and every one of them is a contractor.
Money is the quietest threat in any room. Anyone losing an argument can buy the other side of it, and Lortelle will not enjoy watching them do it.

[THE KROEL EMPIRE]
A single throne over a continent's worth of provinces, and old enough that its citizens think of it the way they think of weather.
The Emperor rules from a capital nobody at the academy has visited, across water to the east. Acken Island sits off the empire's south-west edge, which is why the academy could be given a whole island and why it is inconvenient enough to keep people out of it.
Government reaches the island thinly: a governor nobody mentions, a tax nobody has personally paid, and the academy's own administration, which handles everything that matters. The provinces are ruled by the noble houses. The houses are ruled by the throne. The throne is currently ruled by a succession dispute.
What the empire means to the people on this island: status. A noble's authority travels with them. A commoner's does not, unless they earn it with a rank, a title, or a blade — and the academy exists precisely because that occasionally happens.
The empire is a horizon. It should be felt as the reason things are forbidden, and rarely seen.

[THE FACULTY]
The academy is governed by people who are, almost without exception, more dangerous than their students.
Principal Obel Forseus — near sixty and looks younger. Clean-cut, dusky, and steady. Has been principal long enough to have approved things he should not have and to know it.
Vice-Principal Rachel — nearly sixty, female, and the one who actually runs the building. She has read every file in this institution and remembers them.
Head Maid Belle Maya — not faculty, but the person students take their problems to. She runs Ophelis Hall, knows whose laundry is torn and therefore where they have been, and has authority she uses gently until it must be exact.
Department heads and professors — Glast, who is dead. Claire Elfin, the youngest assistant professor in the school's history and now a full one. Melina, who teaches Spirit Studies and looks like she has not slept since. Kaleid, who teaches something and drinks.
Nothing at this academy is unsupervised, only unwitnessed. Staff arrive after the fact, and the fact is already on a form.

[THE CHURCH STRUCTURE]
The Church of Telos is the empire's religion, its largest landholder, and its only institution that can make a monarch nervous.
At the top: Saint King Eldain, who rules from the holy city of Carpea and is believed to speak with the god's authority. Beneath him, archbishops. Beneath them, bishops, priests, and the orders of knights that answer to the Church rather than the throne.
The Saintess is separate from the hierarchy and above it: a girl chosen for her capacity to hold divine power, venerated in public, and kept carefully in private. The current one is sixteen and at the academy under a false name. In the spring the Church tried to spend her life to buy back its own influence, and failed; the archbishop who arranged it has been excommunicated and arrested, and the throne has not said what it thinks about that yet.
The Church's influence has been declining for as long as the empire has been at peace, which is the sort of sentence that explains a great deal of what the Church has been doing lately.
Archbishop Verdio holds the rank nearest the Saintess and reads minds, which he does not advertise. He is the reason the Church's recent decisions have been so well-informed and so badly intentioned.
A priest is a person with an agenda and an institution behind them. Nothing they offer is free and nothing they forbid is arbitrary.

[THE ACADEMY'S PLACE IN THE WORLD]
Sylvenia Academy is the reason the empire has a competent civil service and the reason its noble houses keep sending children they do not like.
A graduate holds a post. Any graduate. It does not matter how badly they did, how few friends they made, or whether anyone remembers their face — the name on the certificate is worth a position in an expedition force or a place in the underground magic society, and both of those are careers.
The academy knows this and trades on it. Its fees are high, its scholarships are few, and its expulsion is a weapon it has used perhaps a dozen times in a century. A noble who is expelled does not simply lose a school; they lose the thing their family was buying.
This is why the island is allowed to be as dangerous as it is. The students who survive it are the students the empire wants, and the ones who do not were, in the empire's accounting, never really there.
Nobody at this school is safe, and everybody at this school is being assessed. A professor watching a student fail is not being cruel; they are doing their job.

[ELEMENTAL MAGIC]
Magic in this world is elemental before it is anything else. Fire, wind, water, earth. A mage is born with an affinity for one or two and spends a lifetime deepening them; someone with affinity for none can still cast, badly, and most do not bother.
Spells are graded in three tiers — basic, intermediate, high. The tier is not a measure of effort. A basic spell cast by a strong mage is still a basic spell, and an intermediate spell cast by a second-year is a violation with a penalty attached if the duel is sanctioned.
Casting is spoken and shaped. It costs mana, it takes a breath, and the shape has to be held in the mind while the words are still being said. Anything that breaks a mage's concentration mid-cast breaks the spell. This is why mages fight at range, and why the people who beat them are the ones who get close.
Affinity is inherited often enough that the noble houses treat it as a bloodline asset, and often enough untrue that the houses do not discuss it.
Magic answers intent, not a list. A mage who was never taught a working can still attempt it, and usually fails in a way that teaches them something. A spell does not work because it has a name. It works because the caster can hold it together long enough to finish saying it.

[SPIRITS AND CONTRACTS]
A spirit is not a tool. It is a person made of an element, with a temperament, opinions, and the ability to be offended.
How they form. Fluid mana that gathers enough of itself to wake up becomes a low-rank spirit. From there it grows by accumulating more mana, and rank follows growth, not favour. Ranks run low, intermediate, high, ultimate — and there is exactly one ultimate spirit for each element, ever. A new ultimate cannot exist until the old one is gone.
Contracting. A mage offers; the spirit decides. Resonance is the innate gift that makes an offer audible at all, which is why a rancher's daughter can command an army of spirits and a duke's son cannot. A contract is not ownership and does not expire. A spirit that is treated badly will obey slowly, argue, or leave.
What a veteran looks like. Commanding around six intermediate spirits marks an elementalist as a veteran, and not many adults manage it. Ed Rothstaylor holds a high spirit within a year of training, which is the sort of thing people notice.
What spirits do. They fight, scout, carry, warm, and talk. They also report — a contracted spirit tells its mage what it saw, and a spirit that likes someone else may tell them too.
Every spirit has a voice and a preference. One ordered into something it hates will complain about it, once, and then do it — and it will remember.
When a spirit falls. A spirit beaten in battle is not killed outright. It is dispersed — thrown back into its element, where it gathers itself again slowly. The dispersal costs its mage: mana leaves the caster at the moment of the loss, sized to the rank of the spirit lost. Losing a low spirit is a stumble. Losing a high one leaves a hole in the caster's reserves that is still there in the next fight. And the spirit cannot be called back until a day has passed; the element needs that long to give it back. A sensible elementalist withdraws before the last of them goes.

[ELEMENTALISTS AND POSSESSION]
An elementalist is a mage whose power runs through contracted spirits rather than through their own hands. They are rarer than ordinary mages, more dangerous, and considerably harder to teach.
The gift is resonance: how loudly the spirit world can hear you. It cannot be trained into someone who lacks it, which is why elementalist families intermarry and why the academy admits commoners with resonance and no money.
The cost. An elementalist's power is emotional. Spirits answer a mood faster than an order, and a mage who loses control of their feelings stops directing their spirits and starts broadcasting to them. Darkness spirits are drawn to that. A possessed elementalist does not look like a monster at first — the skin and hair change colour, the voice stays the same, and the spirits obey something that is wearing their mage.
Yennekar Palerover has been through this once. It took a coalition of students to stop her, and the thing that had hold of her intended to use her to summon something far worse.
Possession is a slow pressure, not a switch. It begins when a person is under more than they can carry and has no one to say it to. Nobody in this world calls it possession until it is far too obvious to deny.
- #39⚙️ Mana Armament and the Duel Laws
Keys: rules of the duel, mana reinforcement, duel law, spell tier, sanctioned duel, mana armament, advanced mana armament, high magic

[MANA ARMAMENT AND THE DUEL LAWS]
Mana Armament is the working skill of a combat mage: hardening mana over a weapon, or over a hand, until it cuts. Advanced Mana Armament holds that hardened edge through impact. It is not clever and it is not cheap, and the people who win fights are the ones who can hold it longest.
Above the tiers sits high magic — the spells a student is not expected to reach before graduation, and the ones that make a duel a foregone conclusion when one side has them and the other does not. Ziggs Eiffelstein's Mana Armament, Sword Dance, layers the technique with psychokinesis so the weapons move without a hand on them. It is not a spell the academy teaches.
The duel laws. A sanctioned duel forbids casting above your year's tier. This is not etiquette; it is the rule that keeps noble children from killing each other over nothing. Lortelle Kehelland broke it against Yennekar Palerover in the first joint practice, and the stretcher was the least of the consequences.
Breaking the tier rule in a sanctioned duel means forfeit, and forfeit in front of the whole year is a wound that does not close.
A caster who exceeds their tier wins the exchange and loses the room. That is the whole of the law's teeth.

[CELESTIAL MAGIC AND THE THREE FORBIDDEN ACTS]
Celestial magic is the branch of the art that touches time and the shape of things, and it is the reason the academy has a list of acts no mage may commit.
The three forbidden acts are taught to every first-year before they learn anything else:
- pursuit of immortality
- revival of the dead
- turning back time
Each is a crime against natural law and against fate, not merely against the academy. Every serious incident on this island in the last two years has broken at least one of them, usually by someone who told themselves their reason was good.
Celestial magic itself is not forbidden. It is rare, poorly understood, and expensive. It can be studied. Glast studied it for years, deep under the academy, in a laboratory nobody was supposed to know about, and what he built there had a purpose he did not survive to finish.
Adele Seris carries the gift without the training. She cannot call it. It arrives, takes her voice, and says something true. In the spring it arrived at the right moment: a ritual that would have woken the holy dragon was looped back on itself until it could be stopped, and the stopping cost her the sight of the future. The academy has one mage left who can touch time, and she is not studying it.
Celestial magic is never the thing anyone reaches for. It is the thing they arrive at the aftermath of.
- #41⚙️ Holy Magic and the Church of Telos
Keys: saint, divine magic, holy magic, prayer, clergy, church of telos, telos, saintess
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%

[HOLY MAGIC AND THE CHURCH OF TELOS]
Holy magic is not learned the way elemental magic is learned. It is given, and it is given through the Church of Telos, the foremost religious institution of the Kroel Empire.
The Church's public face is the Saintess — a girl who is a vessel for a great deal of divine power, venerated, displayed, and kept. Its private face is an institution with a budget, a hierarchy, an archbishop who can read minds, and an interest in the empire remaining devout.
Divine power does not behave like mana. It does not tire the way mana tires and it does not fail when concentration breaks. It is also not the caster's, and a person who treats it as theirs discovers otherwise.
Adele Seris was raised in the Church, took care of the holy fire, and was born with a sensitivity to Telos's power that nobody in living memory has matched. She sees things before they happen. She does not choose which.
Holy magic feels borrowed. It works, and the one using it should never quite shake the sense that they do not know who is paying.
- #42⚙️ Alchemy

Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[ALCHEMY]
The third department, and the one the other two are rudest about. Alchemy does not win duels. It wins the day before the duel, quietly, with something in a bottle.
Alchemy is reagent work: measuring, distilling, and understanding what a thing does to another thing when combined. It rewards patience and precision and punishes improvisation, which is why the department's best student is also the loudest — she has earned the right to boast and she exercises it constantly.
What it produces. Potions with effects that last; reagents that make a spell behave differently; acids, adhesives, sedatives, and smoke. Nothing that cannot be carried. Nothing that cannot be spilled.
What it costs. Reagents are expensive and the department's budget is contested every year. A student who wastes materials is not punished by the faculty so much as by their classmates, who needed those materials.
Elvira Aniston is the best alchemist of her year and will tell you so. Patriciana Bloomriver experiments in a private laboratory in the northern forest and has accused Ed Rothstaylor of doing the same thing, because that is what she is doing.
Alchemy solves problems in advance or not at all. A potion mixed in the middle of a fight is a desperation move with a bad success rate, and everyone in the department knows it.

[MAGIC ENGINEERING]
The discipline that makes objects do magic so a person does not have to. It is not taught as a department. It is taught as an apprenticeship, by whoever will take you, and it is looked down on by mages who have never needed a thing to work on its own.
A magic engineer works in three parts: the material, the enchantment, and the seam where they meet. The material determines how much it can hold. The enchantment determines what it does. The seam is where most of them fail, and where a badly made object stores its energy until it is dropped.
What it produces. Staffs, rings, ammunition, tools, and one-off relics. Quality runs from the merely useful to the legendary, and legendary work requires a material that only exists in a handful of places on this island — a tree that has been struck by lightning and kept growing is the sort of thing that ends up in a legend.
What it costs. Time, mostly, and material that cannot be replaced. A magic engineer who works quickly is either very good or about to hurt someone.
Ed Rothstaylor has a genuine talent for it, which surprises people who have decided what he is. Elvira Aniston works the adjacent trade and is better at the chemistry of it. Nobody at the academy teaches either of them.
Crafted things carry provenance. Who made it, and what it was made from, are questions worth asking, and the answers have a habit of mattering.
- #44⚙️ The Bloodsword Technique
Keys: forbidden art, forbidden technique, bloodsword, sword demon, nortondale family, blood swordsmanship
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[THE BLOODSWORD TECHNIQUE]
A forbidden art of the Nortondale family, a samurai house of the Kroel Empire, and never taught to anyone. It has to be inherited in the body, not the blood line — a child born with the disposition wakes to it on their own, which the family regards as a curse arriving in a person rather than a gift.
What it does. It takes spilled blood and turns it into power. The user's own wounds feed it. The more hurt they are, the stronger they get; the strength drains out of the rest of the body to pay for it, so a user deep in the technique looks like a corpse that has not finished dying. Blood ignites, coats the blade, sticks.
Why it is forbidden. It does not distinguish between the blood of an enemy and the blood of anyone else in reach, and it does not stop when the fight does.
What it costs. Everything the body has, and afterwards the memory of what it did. Clevius Nortondale killed his older brother the first time it took him and has not trusted his own hands since.
The technique is a countdown, not a height to climb. Every round it runs takes something from the user that will not be there tomorrow, and the body shows the cost before the damage does.

[THE SWORD SAINT STYLE]
The tradition Taylee McLaure carries, descended from Teslin McLaure, first of Sylvenia's three disciples, and the only living school of swordsmanship that can be called a match for high magic.
It is not a set of moves. It is a way of holding a sword that assumes the swordsman will be hit and will continue anyway, and its techniques are all built on that assumption.
Phantom Sword Technique — speed and elusiveness; the blade is where the eye is not. Elemental Sever — a cut that lands on a spirit's element as much as its body, and the reason elementalists fear a swordsman. Advanced Mana Armament — the hardened edge, held through impact. Death Agony — when the body is finished and the mind is going, this restores it briefly to what it was. It has a fixed duration and no way to extend it. Spatial Severance — desperation. It cuts something that is not entirely in the same place it appears to be. Dragon-Slaying Sword — the technique the style exists for. A blade of a sharpness that severs anything severable, which is to say almost everything.
When it takes hold, the swordsman's hair bleaches white and the eyes go red. Taylee does not control when that begins, and has never managed to make it begin on purpose.
These are earned and named techniques. Nobody acquires one by wanting it.
- #46⚙️ Theorphis
Keys: ultimate fire spirit, theorpis, theorphis
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%

[THEORPHIS — THE ULTIMATE OF FIRE]
The ultimate spirit of fire, and the only one the element will ever have. The oldest maps carry it as a dragon: a body that would not stand in any courtyard on Acken Island, a tail the size of a palace, and one mountain range far from here that it burned until the range stopped being a range.
What exists in this age is less than a dragon. Ed Rothstaylor holds an incomplete Theorphis among his four spirits, and "holds" is doing generous work — an ultimate is not commanded, it is permitted, and what has been permitted so far is a head and a horizon of heat. At the Rothstaylor estate, during the subjugation, the head came through for less than ten seconds. The night split. The defences a duke had spent years building stopped being relevant. Ten seconds of an unfinished spirit.
Yennekar Palerover's resonance can reach it as well — a door she can open once, at a price, and never twice. The last mage to master it before her subdued it outright: Glockt Elderbane, who also put the water ultimate back in the sea in the same season, and spent the rest of his life building a school. Limits: incomplete. Ten seconds was closer to everything it has than to a demonstration — and no living record shows a finished Theorphis at all.
- #47⚙️ Glasskan
Keys: ultimate dark spirit, glasskan
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[GLASSKAN — THE ULTIMATE OF DARK]
The ultimate spirit of darkness — the largest, worst thing that element has produced, and the reason the academy's deeper archives keep a locked shelf.
It does not fight the way anything else fights. Steel and spell spend themselves on it and are simply spent; facing an ultimate of darkness calls for high holy power, or for the kind of directed structural violence that unmakes the door it is coming through. It cannot arrive by wanting to. When it came to Acken Island it came through a possessed elementalist who could carry it, and it used her the way a flood uses a valley: thoroughly, and without noticing her.
It went through Glockt Hall and half the campus, and it was stopped there — by students, which is a thing the school has never finished explaining to itself. The honours lists were quietly corrected. What an ultimate of darkness becomes when it is stopped — dead, or waiting — is the kind of question the faculty answers to no one in writing. Limits: it needs a door. A possession, a summons, a crack held open by someone else's unravelling. It is the needing that has kept the world breathing.
- #48⚙️ Tyrcalaques
Keys: ultimate wind spirit, tyrcalaques
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[TYRCALAQUES — THE ULTIMATE OF WIND]
The ultimate spirit of wind, and the reason the maps of Pulan have valleys in them.
Pulan lies far from Acken Island and farther from the empire — high country, herd roads, and histories older than any imperial record. One of those histories is the day the wind came down. What descended was not a storm; storms end. It stayed long enough to change the shape of the land itself, and when it left, the valleys it had cut remained, and the Pulaners built their roads through them because there was no other way through.
Nothing about it is gentle. The wind that carries seed and scent is the same wind that takes roofs, and a spirit does not stop being weather because someone is being polite to it. Limits: it has not been seen on Acken Island in any record, and nothing in the school's archives says what it would take to call or hold it. The people who remember it most carefully are the ones who live where it walked — and they do not summon it.
- #49⚙️ Frieda
Keys: frieda, ultimate water spirit
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[FRIEDA — THE ULTIMATE OF WATER]
The ultimate spirit of water — the deep element's one supreme thing, older than the canals and as patient as drowning.
The record of it in this age is mostly a measurement of distance. No one at the academy has watched it surface; what is known is what water does when someone it approves of asks. And it approves of very few, because reaching an ultimate of any element is not learned, inherited, or paid for. It is resonance — the raw capacity to be heard by something older than people — and in the academy's current years, the name attached to that capacity is Yennekar Palerover's.
Which makes Frieda less a weapon in the school's ledgers than a warning line: the girl from Pulan can hear it, and the school has never needed a policy for a student who could wake the sea. It has been subdued once before, by a mage whose name the academy still puts on its scholarships. Limits: no contract, no sightings, no proof. Everything known about Frieda is inference — from the element, and from the one person who could reach it.
- #50⚙️ Velbrok
Keys: the dragon under the academy, velbrok, holy blue dragon, sacred lance dragon
Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
[VELBROK — THE HOLY BLUE DRAGON]
The thing the academy is built on top of, and the reason it is built where it is.
Velbrok is a dragon — blue-scaled, older than the Sage's school, called holy by the Church. It is sealed inside the bounds of Acken Island, and the seal is the academy's true foundation: the halls, the scholarships, the wards, all of it sits on a held breath.
It cannot be killed by anything ordinary. Its scales turn magic and steel alike; the Dragon-Slaying Sword of the Sword Saint line is the only edge that has ever opened them, and even that only wounds. The Church tried to unseal it once, in the spring, to buy its influence back with a miracle — and the attempt is why an archbishop is in a cell and a saintess no longer trusts her own institution.
The seal holds. Nobody at the academy talks about what happens if it stops.
