   SETTING BASELINE — 2036

The Extinction War has just ended after eight years of fighting between humanity and the alien force humans call the Djinn. Organized Djinn military resistance on Earth collapsed after the Second Battle of Britain, but victory is only weeks old and nobody treats peace as permanent. Roughly three quarters of humanity is dead. Many national governments have vanished, others survive only through emergency institutions, and almost every surviving society is consolidating population, infrastructure, industry, and public services.

The world is not a uniform wasteland. Some regions remain recognizable and functional, though badly underpopulated and rationed. Others are shattered, abandoned, or ecologically altered by Djinn environmental engineering. Great Britain is the most famous exclusion region: fewer than a million people survived there, most have been evacuated, and large areas remain unsafe because of alien toxins and engineered ecology. Cities such as New York remain physically enormous but support only a fraction of their prewar populations, leaving empty districts beside crowded consolidation zones.

Human technology remains recognizably near-future and hard-science-fictional. Humanity has no faster-than-light travel, artificial gravity, force fields, teleportation, or handheld miracle weapons. Human military advances center on drones, machine vision, electronic warfare, autonomous logistics, improved materials, advanced medicine, and rugged battlefield networking. The Djinn possess clearly superior materials science, biotechnology, energy storage, and interstellar capability, but humans do not understand all of it.

No one knows what the Djinn force actually represented: invasion army, colonial expedition, refugee movement, rogue faction, servitor caste, or something else. No confirmed Djinn homeworld or political authority is known, and no one can say whether another force is coming. The war is over. The emergency is not.

   THE EXTINCTION WAR, 2028–2036

The Extinction War was the eight-year conflict between humanity and the interstellar force humans named the Djinn. It began in 2028 after unidentified craft entered the Solar System, maneuvered through the outer system, and pushed into cislunar space. Attempts at communication produced no reliable diplomatic exchange. Fighting escalated from orbital interception and attacks on space infrastructure into direct landings and sustained warfare on Earth.

The Djinn never conquered the planet in a conventional political sense. They destroyed or bypassed governments, seized strategically useful terrain, established heavily defended nodes, and deployed large-scale ecological engineering systems. Their behavior looked partly military and partly colonial, but the distinction remains unresolved. Human casualties came not only from combat but from famine, epidemic disease, infrastructure collapse, displacement, ecological contamination, civil violence, and the breakdown of public institutions.

Humanity survived through extreme mobilization. National forces remained politically distinct but increasingly shared intelligence, logistics, standards, and strategic planning through multinational commands. Industry was reorganized for common production. Civilian infrastructure was militarized. Automated systems replaced missing workers. Emergency governments acquired powers that would have been politically impossible before the invasion.

The Djinn possessed better materials, biological engineering, energy storage, and interstellar transport, but their expedition had finite strategic depth. Human forces could rebuild factories, recruit locally, disperse production, and learn from captured equipment. Every irreplaceable Djinn spacecraft or production complex destroyed reduced capabilities that could not easily be restored. Over years of attritional war, the balance slowly changed.

The last major organized Djinn stronghold was centered on Great Britain. Its destruction during the Second Battle of Britain in 2036 ended coordinated enemy resistance on Earth. There was no clear surrender. Some Djinn fought until killed, some were captured, and others disappeared into altered regions. The war is officially over, but no peace treaty exists because humanity still does not understand who, if anyone, had authority to sign one.

3. #3HISTORY | First Contact and Orbital Crisis

Keys: cislunar invasion, 2028, first Djinn, Orbital Crisis, outer Solar System, first contact

FIRST CONTACT AND THE 2028 ORBITAL CRISIS

Humanity first detected the incoming Djinn presence as anomalous objects moving through the outer Solar System in 2028. Their trajectories and acceleration profiles established that they were artificial well before their origin or purpose could be determined. The objects did not respond to communication attempts in any comprehensible language, mathematical protocol, or radio format humans could confidently interpret as diplomatic exchange.

The earliest phase of the crisis unfolded in space. Djinn craft probed navigation networks, communications satellites, lunar installations, and high-value orbital infrastructure. Human states initially responded separately, withholding information and protecting national assets. That fragmentation proved disastrous. Several early engagements were lost because no one possessed a complete tactical picture.

Within months, the distinction between observation and invasion had disappeared. Djinn forces attacked orbital infrastructure, inserted reconnaissance and engineering systems into Earth's atmosphere, and began landing military and ecological assets. The popular term “Djinn” originated among soldiers and emergency personnel who described the newcomers as things appearing from smoke, dust, ruined structures, and electronic interference. The name spread faster than scientific designations and became universal wartime usage.

The destruction of orbital infrastructure was strategically important. Global positioning, weather observation, commercial communications, and reconnaissance degraded sharply. Low Earth orbit accumulated dangerous debris. Humanity still retained space capability, but access became intermittent, militarized, and expensive. The loss helped produce one of the defining contradictions of the postwar world: sophisticated computers and local automation coexist with communications networks that can be less reliable than those of the early twenty-first century.

4. #4HISTORY | War Chronology 2028–2036

   Keys: 2032, campaign history, 2031, 2029, 2034, 2035, 2030, war chronology, war timeline, 2033

   EXTINCTION WAR CHRONOLOGY

2028 — FIRST CONTACT AND ORBITAL CRISIS. Djinn craft enter cislunar space, attack orbital infrastructure, and establish the first surface footholds. National responses are fragmented and costly.

2029 — EXPANSION. The Djinn establish major operational zones across Eurasia, parts of Africa, and strategic coastal regions elsewhere. Refugee movements become continental in scale. Emergency rationing and conscription spread.

2030 — COORDINATION. Repeated military failures force surviving powers into deeper joint command arrangements. Standardized ammunition, data links, identification systems, and industrial priorities begin replacing incompatible national wartime systems. The first important Djinn production sites are captured intact enough to study.

2031 — ORBITAL DENIAL. Neither side can use near-Earth space freely. Satellite constellations are heavily degraded, lunar installations are fought over, and autonomous interception becomes common. Terrestrial fiber, radio relays, and local mesh networks regain strategic importance.

2032 — THE LOGISTICS CRISIS. Population displacement, famine, damaged agriculture, and shortages of skilled workers bring many human states near collapse. Automated freight, military food distribution, compulsory labor, and aggressive consolidation policies expand.

2033 — INTERNAL COLLAPSE. Several national governments cease to function. Military formations assume policing, infrastructure protection, evacuation, and food-security roles. Human forces increasingly learn to contain Djinn ecological systems rather than merely destroy visible enemy units.

2034 — COUNTEROFFENSIVE YEARS. Human industry, standardized equipment, improved anti-Djinn doctrine, and attrition begin shifting the strategic balance. Djinn forces retreat toward defensible ecological zones and major infrastructure nodes.

2035 — FORTRESS BRITAIN. Great Britain becomes the principal Djinn stronghold in Europe and one of the most heavily altered regions on Earth. Human planning focuses on isolating it while reducing remaining enemy positions elsewhere.

2036 — SECOND BATTLE OF BRITAIN. Multinational forces destroy the last known major Djinn command and support network on Earth. Organized resistance collapses without a formal surrender. Victory is declared, followed immediately by demobilization, ecological quarantine, political disputes, and the beginning of reconstruction.

5. #5ALIENS | Djinn Biology

Keys: alien biology, birdlike alien, Djinn biology, Djinn corpse, alien anatomy, Djinn body, Djinn

   THE DJINN — KNOWN BIOLOGY

“Djinn” is the universal human name for the alien beings encountered during the Extinction War; humanity does not know what they call themselves. Adult Djinn are roughly humanoid in body plan but clearly nonhuman. They possess elongated limbs, powerful digitigrade legs, hard external plates, and anatomical features commonly described as avian because of their posture, head geometry, and keratin-like structures. The resemblance is superficial rather than evidence of any relationship to Earth birds.

Their so-called exoskeleton is not a true insect-style shell. It is a layered biological armor system combining mineralized tissue, hard keratin-like plates, and flexible connective structures. Thickness and composition vary between individuals, leading to debate over natural variation, age, deliberate modification, or engineered occupational castes. Standard prewar intermediate rifle cartridges often proved unreliable against protected areas, one reason human militaries moved toward heavier infantry ammunition.

Djinn metabolism and respiration are broadly compatible with Earth's atmosphere but not perfectly matched to it. They can survive in unmodified terrestrial environments, yet captured installations suggest preferences for different trace chemistry, humidity, microbial conditions, and atmospheric composition. This is one reason their ecological engineering appears to have been local and progressive rather than an attempt to instantly transform the whole planet.

Recovered bodies show extensive biological modification. Researchers cannot reliably distinguish inherited traits from engineered changes. Different populations display repeatable anatomical variations, and some internal structures resemble deliberately optimized systems rather than products of ordinary evolution. This uncertainty drives the Species, Caste, and Servitor theories of Djinn society.

Djinn demonstrate pain responses, self-preservation, coordinated care for wounded companions, recovery of the dead, and behavior consistent with social attachment. They are intelligent persons by any practical scientific measure, despite the enormous difficulty of communicating with them.

6. #6ALIENS | Djinn Culture and Behavior

Keys: Djinn ritual, Djinn dead, Djinn culture, Djinn religion, alien society, alien culture, Djinn society

DJINN CULTURE — OBSERVATIONS AND LIMITS

Humanity possesses evidence that the Djinn have culture, but almost no secure interpretation of what that culture means. Wartime analysis was dominated by military necessity, and most surviving information comes from battlefield observation, captured personal objects, architecture, repeated symbols, and behavior around wounded or dead individuals.

Djinn frequently attempted to recover their dead when tactically practical. Certain recovered objects appear personalized despite having no obvious military or technical use. Repeated arrangements of objects in protected spaces may have been memorial, religious, familial, administrative, or something humans have no equivalent for. Some Djinn risked themselves to remain near injured companions even when withdrawal was strategically possible.

One famous wartime recording from the Siege of Warsaw showed several Djinn remaining beside a dying individual while producing a repeating series of low clicks and physical contact. The behavior has been variously interpreted as medical care, farewell ritual, command authentication, prayer, or a sensory exchange humans do not perceive. None of those interpretations is proven.

Djinn structures contain recurring symbols, but humans cannot confidently separate language, ownership marks, hazard signs, unit insignia, religious iconography, art, and interface labels. What appears decorative may encode information outside human sensory ranges. What appears purely functional may carry deep cultural meaning.

Researchers therefore use disciplined uncertainty. Statements such as “the Djinn worshiped,” “the Djinn had castes,” or “the Djinn considered Earth sacred” are hypotheses, not established facts. No human institution possesses a reliable translation of Djinn philosophy, history, politics, kinship, religion, or self-identity.

7. #7ALIENS | Djinn Origin Problem

Keys: Djinn origin, another fleet, alien fleet, Djinn homeworld, homeworld, Djinn expedition, where did the Djinn come from, reinforcements

   THE DJINN ORIGIN PROBLEM

The single greatest strategic uncertainty after the Extinction War is that humanity does not know what the defeated Djinn force represented.

The Expeditionary Theory treats it as a state-directed military campaign sent by a larger civilization. The Colonial Theory argues that the force was designed primarily to establish a permanent settlement and that military operations protected that objective. The Refugee Theory proposes that the Djinn were fleeing some unknown catastrophe and attempted to secure Earth because they could not return. The Rogue-Faction Theory suggests the invaders may not have represented their wider species or civilization at all. The Servitor Theory goes further: the beings humans fought may have been engineered workers and soldiers deployed by creators or masters humanity never encountered.

Captured astronomical and navigation data identify candidate stellar directions but no confirmed homeworld. Djinn computers and maps do not organize information in forms humans can translate cleanly, and the absence of recognizable place names makes interpretation difficult. There is no reliable evidence of faster-than-light travel. Known Djinn interstellar craft appear consistent with extremely advanced but physical sublight engineering, likely involving high-efficiency propulsion, exceptional energy storage, long-duration life support, biological dormancy, or combinations of these.

This makes the uncertainty worse rather than better. If the expedition traveled for decades or centuries, another force could already be in transit without knowing the first was defeated. Alternatively, the civilization that launched it might no longer exist.

Postwar strategic planning is consequently built around an unanswered question: did humanity survive the invasion, or only the first contact with something much larger?

8. #8ALIENS | Djinn Communication

Keys: XCO translation, translate Djinn, Djinn speech, Djinn language, Djinn communication, alien language, chittering

   DJINN COMMUNICATION

Djinn vocalization consists of clicks, chittering sequences, whistles, low-frequency vibration, and components extending beyond ordinary human hearing. Visual and tactile signaling may also be involved. Human field recordings therefore capture only part of a normal Djinn exchange unless specialized sensors are used.

Wartime translation achieved limited operational success. Researchers identified repeated patterns associated with numbers, locations, quantities, warnings, individual identifiers, and basic commands. Some captured systems can be operated through learned symbol-function associations without true linguistic understanding. Human forces occasionally exploited these patterns for deception or intelligence, but fluent translation never existed during the war.

Postwar contact teams can exchange very simple concepts with a small number of surviving Djinn: object identification, movement, yes/no-like confirmation, numbers, spatial relationships, immediate needs, and some apparent emotional or physiological states. Abstract concepts remain unreliable. A translation that appears to mean “home,” for example, could mean birthplace, assigned habitat, unit location, protected territory, or something else entirely.

Claims of complete Djinn translation are generally fraudulent, ideological, or based on overconfidence. Human institutions treat all high-level translations as provisional.

9. #9ECOLOGY | Djinn Ecological Engineering

Keys: alien contamination, terraforming, alien spores, Djinn terraforming, Seeder, ecological engineering, alien microbes

   DJINN ECOLOGICAL ENGINEERING

Human civilians usually call the process “terraforming,” but scientific agencies prefer ecological engineering. The Djinn did not possess a single device that transformed whole continents. Instead they deployed interacting biological and chemical systems designed to push local environments toward conditions useful to them.

These systems include engineered microorganisms, fungal analogues, photosynthetic organisms, soil-processing colonies, chemical catalysts, invasive symbiotic life, and larger biological utility organisms. Some extract or sequester compounds from soil. Others alter nitrogen cycles, suppress native microbes, manufacture useful metabolites, change water chemistry, or prepare environments for later organisms.

Because Earth already possessed a complex biosphere, results were unpredictable. In some regions native ecosystems collapsed. Elsewhere alien organisms failed completely. Some zones developed stable but strange mixed ecologies in which terrestrial species adapted to altered chemistry or formed new relationships with introduced organisms. Two contaminated regions seeded with apparently similar Djinn systems can therefore have radically different outcomes.

The process also produced delayed hazards. A landscape may look normal while groundwater contains persistent alien metabolites. An apparently dead fungal mat may reactivate after seasonal rain. An introduced organism harmless to adults may be dangerous to children, livestock, or crops.

Postwar ecological work is consequently slow. Clearing visible alien growth does not make land safe. Soil, water, air, microbial communities, food chains, and seasonal cycles must be monitored before a region can be reopened.

10. #10ECOLOGY | Hazard Classification

Keys: ecological zone, hazard zone, zone classification, contamination zone, Red Zone, Yellow Zone, Black Zone, Green Zone

    POST-DJINN ECOLOGICAL HAZARD CLASSIFICATION

During the war, military and scientific agencies developed a shared color system for describing alien ecological risk. Local governments may use additional categories, but Green, Yellow, Red, and Black are understood internationally.

GREEN — No known alien ecological process presents an unusual risk to ordinary human habitation. Green does not mean pristine or completely uncontaminated; it means existing hazards can be managed through normal public-health systems.

YELLOW — Human habitation is possible with monitoring, filtration, controlled agriculture, restricted water sources, protective work practices, or other specific measures. Many important postwar cities contain Yellow districts.

RED — Significant risk exists without specialized protection. Entry may require respirators, sealed clothing, decontamination, inoculation, time limits, or environmental monitoring. Permanent civilian settlement is normally prohibited.

BLACK — Conditions are either extremely dangerous or too poorly understood for a meaningful safety prediction. Black designation may reflect active alien organisms, unexplained toxicity, unstable ecological processes, surviving Djinn systems, or lack of reliable survey data.

Zone classifications are not permanent. Regions can be downgraded or upgraded as conditions change. Public cynicism is common because officials repeatedly emphasize that Green means “acceptable risk,” not absolute safety. A common veteran joke says: “Green means we think you won't die.”

11. #11ECOLOGY | Post-Djinn Ecosystems

Keys: alien animals, post-Djinn wildlife, hybrid ecosystem, alien ecosystem, alien fungus, Djinn weed, alien plants, hybrid life

    POST-DJINN ECOSYSTEMS

Alien ecological alteration did not produce one standardized “Djinn biome.” It created thousands of local experiments, failures, collapses, and accidental hybrids. The majority of alien organisms are not combat threats. Many are microbial films, mat-forming growths, fungal analogues, small scavengers, soil organisms, or irritating weeds.

Some introduced life is merely inconvenient. Purple-gray drain films resistant to ordinary bleach have become a mundane nuisance in several Yellow-zone cities. Certain alien groundcovers grow aggressively in disturbed soil but are nutritionally useless. Tiny chitinous scavengers infest warm electrical cabinets because they are attracted to heat and trace metals.

Other systems are hazardous. Some spores cause severe inflammatory reactions. Several plant-like organisms accumulate heavy metals and alien metabolites in their tissues. Predator or defensive bioforms occasionally survive in abandoned regions. Earth species can also become dangerous after feeding on contaminated organisms or adapting to altered environments.

Hybridization rarely means direct genetic mixing between alien and Earth organisms. Their biochemistry is too different for ordinary crossbreeding. “Hybrid ecosystem” usually means an ecological community in which terrestrial and alien organisms interact, compete, parasitize one another, or transform the same environment.

Researchers are cautious about eradication. Some alien organisms now stabilize poisoned soil or process contaminants that would otherwise spread. Destroying them without understanding their role can make a region worse.

12. #12ECOLOGY | Djinn Utility Bioforms

Keys: Carrier bioform, Djinn bioform, Burrower, biomechanical, alien organism machine, Seeder, Crawler

    DJINN UTILITY BIOFORMS

The Djinn made extensive use of organisms engineered for industrial, logistical, and ecological tasks. Human terminology is functional and often imprecise because researchers still dispute where “animal,” “machine,” and “tool” should be separated in Djinn technology.

SEEDERS distribute engineered microbes, spores, and chemical precursors. Some resemble mobile biological processing plants rather than vehicles. Destroying active Seeders became a major wartime priority because one could alter a wide area over time.

CARRIERS are large load-bearing bioforms used to move equipment or biological material through difficult terrain. Some contain implanted mechanical interfaces and appear partly controlled by external signals.

BURROWERS excavate soil, prepare underground structures, and install subsurface biological systems. Abandoned Burrower tunnels remain dangerous because they can connect otherwise isolated contaminated zones.

CRAWLER is a broad soldier term for smaller multipurpose alien utility organisms whose exact role is unclear. The term has no scientific precision.

Many bioforms can continue functioning after the Djinn who deployed them are gone. Some follow simple programmed behaviors. Others show limited adaptive decision-making. Postwar teams therefore treat abandoned Djinn biological infrastructure as active machinery until proven otherwise.

13. #13WAR | Second Battle of Britain

Keys: Second Britain, Second Battle of Britain, final battle, Britain campaign, Battle of Britain 2036, final campaign

THE SECOND BATTLE OF BRITAIN, 2036

The Second Battle of Britain was the final major campaign of the Extinction War and is named explicitly to distinguish it from the 1940 Battle of Britain during the Second World War. Soldiers commonly shorten the campaign to “Second Britain.”

By 2035, Great Britain had become the most important surviving Djinn fortress in Europe. The islands offered natural defensive geography, Atlantic access, dense prewar infrastructure, ports, energy installations, and proximity to continental Europe. Years of ecological engineering had also transformed large areas into environments easier for Djinn forces to support and harder for humans to operate in.

The campaign involved far more than a conventional land invasion. Human forces fought across the North Sea, in the air, through surviving orbital infrastructure, along contaminated coastal zones, and against deeply buried Djinn installations. Naval blockade, long-range fires, drone reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and ecological containment were as important as infantry operations.

The decisive phase destroyed or captured the last known major Djinn command, production, and support network on Earth. Enemy formations did not surrender as a coherent army. Some fought until destroyed. Some ceased coordinated operations. Some abandoned equipment and disappeared into transformed terrain. A limited number were captured or allowed themselves to be taken alive.

Human governments declared the Extinction War over after organized Djinn resistance collapsed. The declaration was politically and psychologically necessary, but military forces continue clearance operations in Britain and other exclusion zones.

14. #14REGION | British Exclusion Zone

Keys: BEZ, London, British evacuation, British Exclusion Zone, Britain, Great Britain, England, Wales, Scotland

    GREAT BRITAIN AFTER THE WAR

Great Britain is the most famous ecological and demographic disaster of the Extinction War. Repeated fighting, famine, evacuation, infrastructure collapse, and intensive Djinn ecological engineering reduced the surviving population to fewer than one million people by the end of the conflict. Most remaining civilians have since been evacuated from unsafe or logistically unsustainable areas.

The United Kingdom retains legal continuity, citizenship, government institutions, surviving military forces, and international recognition. What it lacks is normal territorial control over much of Great Britain. Government functions operate partly from surviving safe areas and partly from facilities abroad. British communities are scattered through Ireland, Canada, continental Europe, Scandinavia, and other host regions.

The islands contain Green pockets, Yellow corridors, heavily contaminated Red regions, and Black areas that have not been adequately surveyed. London is not simply a cratered ruin; parts remain physically recognizable while being chemically, biologically, or logistically uninhabitable. Other places have been overgrown or structurally transformed by alien ecology.

Official policy describes the evacuation as temporary. No authority can say whether large-scale resettlement will take five years, fifty years, or prove impossible in some regions.

Britain is simultaneously battlefield, graveyard, scientific reserve, national homeland, security problem, and the richest concentration of recoverable Djinn technology on Earth. Every decision about access is therefore politically explosive.

15. #15SOCIETY | The Great Die-Off

Keys: billions dead, casualties, three quarters, Great Die-Off, human population, population collapse, 75%

    THE GREAT DIE-OFF

Approximately three quarters of the prewar human population died during the Extinction War. Prewar humanity numbered roughly nine billion people; credible postwar estimates cluster around two to two-and-a-half billion survivors, but the figure may be wrong by hundreds of millions because records are incomplete and entire regions remain unsurveyed.

Most deaths were not caused directly by alien weapons. Combat destroyed cities and infrastructure, but famine, epidemic disease, contaminated water, interrupted medicine, exposure, refugee movement, industrial accidents, ecological poisoning, and civil violence multiplied the losses. A hospital without power killed people who never saw a Djinn. A destroyed bridge could isolate a farming region. A failed fertilizer shipment could create famine months later.

Losses were radically uneven. Some countries lost less than half their people and retained functioning institutions. Others lost more than ninety percent. A region can therefore be physically intact yet nearly empty, while another may be densely populated but governed only by improvised local authorities.

The demographic shock shapes every postwar policy. There are too few doctors, engineers, electricians, teachers, mechanics, farmers, judges, and technicians to maintain the infrastructure built for nine billion people. Rebuilding is therefore not simply repairing damage. Humanity must decide which parts of its old civilization it can still afford to operate.

16. #16SOCIETY | Collapsed and Surviving States

Keys: administrative territory, continuity state, successor state, failed state, country gone, reduced state, government collapsed, collapsed state

    POSTWAR STATE CATEGORIES

The political map of 2036 is less clear than prewar maps imply. International agencies informally distinguish several kinds of surviving political entity.

CONTINUITY STATES retain a recognizable national government, legal system, and significant control over their territory, even after enormous population loss.

REDUCED STATES maintain legal continuity but have lost major populations, territories, infrastructure, or their former capital. Some operate from temporary administrative centers or abroad.

SUCCESSOR STATES formed where national governments collapsed but provinces, military districts, cities, or regional coalitions survived. Several successor administrations may claim continuity with the same former country without necessarily being at war with one another.

ADMINISTRATIVE TERRITORIES are regions where no viable sovereign authority currently operates and basic government is supplied by emergency international bodies, military commands, neighboring states, or local reconstruction councils. Such arrangements are officially temporary.

A vanished government does not imply an empty land. Millions of people may live in an area whose former state no longer functions. Conversely, a government may continue legally even when most of its homeland is uninhabitable. Borders therefore carry less practical meaning in many regions than access to water, functioning transport, food distribution, and security.

17. #17SOCIETY | Consolidation

Keys: nonviable town, consolidation, consolidate, consolidated, population consolidation, municipal consolidation, resettlement order

    CONSOLIDATION

“Consolidation” is the defining bureaucratic word of the early postwar period. It means concentrating surviving people, services, infrastructure, and industry into systems that can still be maintained with a quarter of humanity's former population.

A city may close entire districts so water, power, fire protection, policing, and transit can focus on inhabited corridors. Three half-staffed hospitals may be merged into one functioning hospital. Small schools close and children are transported farther. Villages are relocated toward rail lines or agricultural centers. Municipal governments merge. Military units combine because neither has enough personnel to remain independent.

Consolidation is often rational and frequently cruel. A town of ten thousand people may occupy infrastructure designed for eighty thousand; maintaining its water plant, electrical grid, roads, hospital, and emergency services can consume resources needed elsewhere. Reconstruction authorities may classify it as nonviable even if the residents survived the war intact.

Resistance is common. People who defended a neighborhood for eight years do not appreciate being told that survival itself is insufficient reason to keep it open. Local slogans mock official language: “The school didn't close; it was consolidated forty miles away.”

Governments insist that consolidation is temporary where possible. Residents increasingly suspect that many temporary closures will become permanent.

18. #18SOCIETY | Depopulated Cities

Keys: abandoned neighborhood, subway, New York, dark district, empty streets, empty city, urban consolidation, NYC

    DEPOPULATED CITIES

Many great cities survived physically while losing most of the people who made them function. New York City is a famous example: a metropolis once inhabited by millions now contains only a little over one million permanent residents. Huge portions of the built environment remain standing around a much smaller network of inhabited districts.

Postwar urban life is organized around consolidation corridors. Power, water, hospitals, public safety, and transit are maintained in selected areas while low-population districts are progressively shut down. Some subway lines operate on limited schedules; others are flooded, damaged, contaminated, or simply unnecessary. Traffic lights can still function on roads seeing only a fraction of prewar traffic.

Empty towers are common. Some are sealed, some stripped for useful equipment, and others occupied informally. City governments prioritize demolition only when structures threaten inhabited zones because labor is scarce. Trees grow through neglected streets, wildlife moves into parks and industrial districts, and abandoned vehicles remain where they are unless their materials are worth recovering.

The most unsettling feature is often not destruction but silence. A familiar city can look almost normal at noon and become nearly black at night outside the inhabited grid.

Urban politics frequently centers on which neighborhoods will be saved. A district that loses its clinic, school, or transformer allocation may understand that designation as a death sentence.

19. #19GOVERNMENT | Wartime Emergency Rule

Keys: martial law, military police, conscripted, riot, military policing, emergency powers, curfew, ration riot, protest, riots

WARTIME EMERGENCY GOVERNMENT AND INTERNAL SECURITY

As civilian institutions collapsed, military forces became the only organized authority in many cities. Police departments lost officers to casualties, desertion, evacuation, conscription, or simple inability to pay and feed personnel. Courts stopped functioning. Prisons emptied. Local governments sometimes survived only as a radio network, a ration office, and whoever still possessed fuel.

Military units therefore inherited policing, firefighting support, infrastructure security, convoy escort, evacuation, ration distribution, and crowd control. Their doctrine became harsh because instability could spread faster than depleted governments could respond.

Food riots were suppressed before they could destroy distribution centers. Roads carrying ammunition, medicine, refugees, and grain were kept open by force. Critical-industry strikes could be prohibited. Demonstrations around essential infrastructure were dispersed. Organizers judged to be obstructing wartime operations could be detained, reassigned to compulsory labor, or conscripted under emergency law. Armed resistance was answered quickly and overwhelmingly.

Abuses occurred, sometimes severe ones. Soldiers became accustomed to coercion; frightened commanders made bad decisions; emergency tribunals lacked normal safeguards. At the same time, there were cities where hesitation genuinely caused mass casualties when depots burned, water systems failed, or mobs attacked refugee columns.

The postwar argument is therefore not over a fictional choice between benevolent government and cartoon tyranny. Wartime emergency powers often prevented worse disasters. They also normalized practices that peacetime societies cannot safely leave unquestioned.

20. #20GOVERNMENT | Postwar Political Transition

Keys: return power, emergency authority, election, sovereignty, postwar government, civilian rule, postwar politics

    THE POSTWAR POLITICAL TRANSITION

Victory immediately created a constitutional problem: institutions built to survive extinction now possess powers that were never intended to become ordinary government.

Military logistics commands still distribute food. International agencies control refugee movement and contamination certification. Emergency boards allocate power and reconstruction materials. Some cities have not held meaningful elections in years. In other places civilian governments formally returned but remain dependent on military personnel to perform basic functions.

Restoring ordinary law is not as simple as issuing an order. A province may have no functioning courts, too few police, and no reliable tax system. Removing the military tomorrow might produce genuine collapse. Keeping it indefinitely could transform emergency rule into permanent authoritarianism.

Political fights therefore center on timelines and conditions. Restorationists demand elections, civilian courts, and the return of sovereign authority. Continuists argue that dismantling wartime coordination before reconstruction is stable would repeat the fragmentation that nearly destroyed humanity. Local administrators often take the least ideological position: they will surrender emergency authority when someone else can actually keep the water running.

The same argument occurs at every scale, from municipal curfews to planetary defense command.

21. #21ORGANIZATION | UNECD

Keys: United Nations Emergency Coordination Directorate, UNECD, Directorate, Emergency Coordination Directorate

UNITED NATIONS EMERGENCY COORDINATION DIRECTORATE — UNECD

The UNECD grew from dozens of UN refugee, food, health, logistics, and disaster-response programs that were progressively merged during the Extinction War. By 2032, the distinction between humanitarian aid and strategic survival had largely collapsed, and the Directorate became the principal civilian mechanism for coordinating resources across surviving states.

UNECD does not legally govern sovereign countries. Its influence comes from controlling or coordinating things governments need: international food allocation, refugee transport, medical stockpiles, emergency communications, reconstruction priorities, strategic industrial sharing, and access to multinational logistics systems.

During the war this arrangement saved millions of lives. After the war it is increasingly controversial. A sovereign government can theoretically reject UNECD authority, but doing so may remove it from shared distribution systems it cannot replace. Critics describe this as government by supply chain. Directorate officials answer that scarcity is a physical fact, not a political threat.

UNECD culture is bureaucratic, multinational, and intensely practical. Its personnel include career diplomats, disaster specialists, logisticians, engineers, public-health workers, and wartime administrators. Many joined temporary emergency programs years ago and have never returned to their former careers.

The Directorate publicly supports restoration of normal civilian government, but there is no agreement on how quickly its extraordinary authority should shrink.

22. #22ORGANIZATION | UEDC Earth Command

Keys: joint command, UEDC, United Earth Defense Command, planetary defense, Earth Command

UNITED EARTH DEFENSE COMMAND — UEDC

UEDC is the multinational strategic command created when surviving militaries accepted that the Extinction War could not be fought through loosely coordinated national operations. It is commonly called Earth Command.

Despite its name, UEDC is not the military of a world government. American, Chinese, Brazilian, Indian, European, African, and other surviving formations remained legally subordinate to their own states or successor authorities. UEDC coordinated strategic intelligence, orbital defense, theater planning, identification standards, logistics priorities, communications protocols, and major multinational campaigns.

The command became increasingly powerful because it possessed the broadest surviving picture of the war. National commanders might understand one front; Earth Command tracked orbital activity, Djinn logistics, contaminated zones, and global industrial capacity simultaneously.

UEDC is now at the center of a postwar political dispute. Military planners argue that disbanding planetary defense immediately after defeating an interstellar expedition would be reckless. Opponents point out that Earth Command is an enormous permanent military institution led mostly by unelected officers and built under emergency law.

For now it remains active. Its mission has shifted toward clearance operations, orbital surveillance, disarmament, protection of exclusion zones, and preparation for the possibility of another extraterrestrial arrival.

23. #23ORGANIZATION | IRDA

Keys: IRDA, reconstruction board, Reconstruction Authority, International Reconstruction and Development Authority

INTERNATIONAL RECONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY — IRDA

IRDA is the principal multinational reconstruction institution of the early postwar period. It coordinates major projects involving power grids, water systems, railways, bridges, communications, housing, industrial recovery, and population consolidation.

The Authority exists because individual governments often lack enough engineers, heavy equipment, spare transformers, skilled labor, or industrial capacity to rebuild independently. IRDA therefore pools scarce resources and assigns them according to strategic plans.

That power makes it hated almost as often as it is welcomed. An IRDA viability assessment can determine whether a town receives a new substation or is scheduled for abandonment. A damaged railway may be repaired ahead of a hospital because the railway can supply ten other hospitals. The calculations are defensible and brutal.

IRDA field teams contain engineers, surveyors, demolition crews, planners, former military logisticians, and local labor. Its emblem appears on temporary bridges, water tanks, modular housing, power equipment, and construction vehicles across the surviving world.

Popular jokes portray IRDA as an agency that rebuilds one city by dismantling another. The joke is close enough to reality that IRDA officials rarely find it funny.

24. #24ORGANIZATION | IXS

Keys: IXS, alien ecology survey, International Xenobiological Survey, Surveyor, xenobiology

    INTERNATIONAL XENOBIOLOGICAL SURVEY — IXS

The International Xenobiological Survey is the primary scientific body responsible for studying Djinn biology, alien ecological systems, contaminated territory, and long-term interactions between terrestrial and extraterrestrial life.

IXS emerged from wartime cooperation among biological-defense laboratories, universities, military medical commands, agricultural institutes, and environmental agencies. It is deliberately multinational because no major power wants another state to monopolize alien biotechnology.

Field personnel are commonly called Surveyors. They map contamination, collect biological samples, establish monitoring stations, test water and soil, investigate new organisms, and recommend Green, Yellow, Red, or Black classifications.

IXS is prestigious but frequently resented. Refugees accuse Surveyors of treating destroyed homelands as laboratories. Military personnel complain that scientists underestimate tactical danger. Scientists complain that soldiers destroy irreplaceable specimens because they moved unexpectedly. Local governments sometimes pressure IXS to downgrade hazard classifications so displaced populations can return.

The Survey's most important institutional habit is uncertainty. An IXS report distinguishes confirmed hazards, probable mechanisms, and unresolved observations. Postwar ecology is too complex for guarantees.

25. #25ORGANIZATION | EMC

Keys: Extraterrestrial Materials Commission, alien technology commission, recovered Djinn technology, Djinn technology research, EMC

    EXTRATERRESTRIAL MATERIALS COMMISSION — EMC

The EMC controls the study, containment, and authorized distribution of recovered Djinn technology and materials. Its facilities hold alien structural composites, biological manufacturing systems, energy-storage devices, damaged computers, sensors, weapons, propulsion components, and fragments recovered from interstellar craft.

The Commission's core principle is simple: nothing leaves controlled containment until its behavior is understood well enough to define the risk. Wartime necessity repeatedly violated that principle, and postwar political pressure continues to do so.

Every major government wants access to Djinn discoveries. Military commands want defensive applications. Companies want industrial processes and patents. Universities want samples. Reconstruction agencies want anything that could accelerate recovery. Intelligence services want to know what rivals have learned.

The EMC therefore functions as laboratory, regulator, security service, and diplomatic compromise. Its scientists are under constant pressure to produce useful technology without repeating wartime accidents.

Authentic alien materials are tightly controlled. Unauthorized possession can trigger serious criminal charges, especially when biological contamination is possible. This has not prevented a large black market.

26. #26ORGANIZATION | BEZA

Keys: British zone authority, BEZA, British Exclusion Zone Authority, Britain authority

BRITISH EXCLUSION ZONE AUTHORITY — BEZA

BEZA is the joint British-international organization responsible for access, security, ecological monitoring, and controlled operations throughout unsafe areas of Great Britain after the Second Battle of Britain.

Legally, BEZA operates under British authority and international agreements rather than replacing the United Kingdom. Practically, it controls permits, research corridors, decontamination facilities, military checkpoints, salvage restrictions, evacuation zones, and approved resettlement areas.

Its mandate forces incompatible priorities together. British political leaders want the homeland reclaimed. Displaced citizens demand access to homes and graves. IXS researchers want long observation periods before reopening land. Military commanders fear surviving Djinn or dormant systems. The EMC wants secure access to recovered technology. Reconstruction planners do not want scarce resources committed to places that may never be viable.

BEZA consequently has enormous power over an emotionally charged landscape. Unauthorized entry into restricted Britain is a serious offense, yet illegal returnees, scavengers, journalists, researchers, and nationalist groups enter regularly.

Among displaced Britons, BEZA can be regarded simultaneously as the institution keeping them from their country and the only institution capable of making return possible.

27. #27ORGANIZATION | IDPS

Keys: family reunification, International Displaced Persons Service, IDPS, refugee service, displaced persons

INTERNATIONAL DISPLACED PERSONS SERVICE — IDPS

IDPS manages one of the largest administrative crises in human history: hundreds of millions of people displaced by invasion, ecological contamination, famine, collapsed borders, and postwar consolidation.

The Service operates registration systems, family-reunification databases, temporary housing allocations, transport programs, missing-person records, and legal identity reconstruction. In many regions, an IDPS record is the only surviving proof that a person legally exists.

This makes paperwork unusually consequential. Identity status can determine food entitlement, housing priority, citizenship claims, medical access, inheritance, family reunification, or eligibility to relocate. Records are incomplete, contradictory, and often based on testimony because original archives were destroyed.

IDPS personnel are accustomed to impossible cases: children with no surviving relatives, people claiming citizenship in countries that no longer function, families split across continents, and communities whose entire civil registry disappeared.

The organization is frequently accused of reducing human lives to files and numbers. Its defenders note that without those files and numbers, millions of survivors would have no recognized identity at all.

28. #28ORGANIZATION | Commission for Human Continuity

Keys: embryo repository, genetic archive, CHC, Commission for Human Continuity, seed bank, continuity bunker, Human Continuity

COMMISSION FOR HUMAN CONTINUITY — CHC

The Commission for Human Continuity was created during the darkest years of the war with a single mandate: ensure Homo sapiens survives even if existing civilization does not.

CHC programs established protected seed banks, genetic archives, embryo repositories, isolated data centers, industrial knowledge stores, scientific continuity sites, language and cultural archives, and hardened settlements intended to preserve technically capable human populations through total systemic collapse.

Some programs were never activated. Others preserved irreplaceable archives when ordinary institutions were destroyed. The Commission consequently emerged from the war with enormous stores of biological and technical information.

Its postwar purpose is controversial. CHC officials argue that a species reduced by roughly three quarters must treat demographics, reproductive medicine, genetic diversity, and geographically distributed settlement as strategic concerns. Moderate proposals include child allowances, fertility treatment, maternal healthcare, and support for large families. More aggressive proposals involve state-funded embryo programs, demographic settlement targets, and long-term reproductive planning.

Civil-liberties organizations fear that an institution created to prevent extinction could turn reproduction into state policy. CHC replies that extinction was not theoretical; humanity came close enough to justify planning for it.

29. #29ORGANIZATION | Global Veterans Federation

Keys: Global Veterans Federation, veterans federation, veterans group, GVF, veteran organization

    GLOBAL VETERANS FEDERATION — GVF

The Global Veterans Federation is an umbrella network connecting national and regional veterans' organizations. It formed during the war to coordinate casualty assistance and has expanded rapidly during demobilization.

GVF chapters provide prosthetic support, employment placement, housing assistance, legal representation, missing-person searches, burial advocacy, peer support, and help navigating military and reconstruction bureaucracy. Some chapters also maintain emergency-response teams because their members possess skills that local governments desperately need.

With an enormous fraction of surviving adults having served in some military or civil-defense capacity, veterans are a major political constituency. The GVF officially avoids partisan alignment, but local chapters vary widely. Some support rapid demobilization and civilian restoration. Others advocate strong planetary defense or resist attempts to restrict wartime weapons.

The Federation's greatest strength is practical solidarity. A veteran stranded hundreds of kilometers from home can often find a GVF hall, meal, spare bed, or someone who knows which office handles a missing discharge record.

30. #30GROUP | The Watch

Keys: The Watch, another invasion, permanent readiness, alien early warning, Watch movement

    THE WATCH

The Watch is an informal transnational network of veterans, officers, scientists, engineers, and civilians who believe humanity must remain permanently prepared for another extraterrestrial arrival.

It is not a secret society and has no single command structure. Local Watch organizations lobby for orbital surveillance, hardened infrastructure, distributed industry, protected archives, continued military research, lunar and off-world settlement, and retention of UEDC.

The movement's central argument is difficult to dismiss: humanity does not know whether the defeated Djinn force was alone. If interstellar travel takes decades, another expedition could already be underway.

Critics accuse the Watch of wanting to preserve wartime militarization forever, diverting reconstruction resources into hypothetical threats, and making psychological recovery impossible. More extreme local branches sometimes drift into conspiracy theories or hostility toward surviving Djinn.

Mainstream Watch members reject those excesses and describe preparedness as the lesson purchased with billions of lives. Their common sentiment is: “Never again surprised.”

31. #31GROUP | Homeguard Associations

Keys: Homeguard Association, local militia, Homeguard, civil defense militia, neighborhood defense

    HOMEGUARD ASSOCIATIONS

Homeguard Associations are local organizations descended from wartime militia, civil-defense units, neighborhood security groups, auxiliary police, and ad hoc military formations. They vary dramatically.

Some are effectively volunteer emergency services whose members happen to retain rifles. They patrol isolated roads, fight fires, search ruins, assist in storms, and provide security where formal police forces remain thin. Others have become heavily armed political organizations suspicious of national or international authority.

Their legal status is inconsistent. Many governments officially recognize wartime service but want heavy weapons surrendered and command structures dissolved. Communities often resist because those same groups kept them alive when government disappeared.

Disarming a disciplined Homeguard that has protected a valley for six years can create a real security vacuum. Allowing every wartime militia to remain armed creates different risks.

The term therefore does not imply heroism or extremism. A Homeguard must be judged by its local history, leadership, and conduct.

32. #32POLITICS | Restorationists, Continuists, Consolidationists, Reclamationists

Keys: Continuists, Reclamationist, Reclamationists, Continuist, Restorationist, Restorationists, Consolidationist, Consolidationists

    MAJOR POSTWAR POLITICAL TENDENCIES

RESTORATIONISTS argue that emergency rule must end and prewar constitutional institutions should be restored wherever possible. They emphasize elections, civilian courts, national sovereignty, and limits on military or international authority. The movement ranges from liberal constitutionalists to aggressive nationalists.

CONTINUISTS believe the war proved that prewar fragmentation was incapable of handling species-level threats. They support permanent multinational structures such as UEDC, stronger international logistics institutions, shared strategic industry, and coordinated alien defense. Most do not advocate a literal world state, though some do.

CONSOLIDATIONISTS emphasize demographic and material reality. They favor merging municipalities, closing unsustainable settlements, concentrating infrastructure, and planning population distribution around viable transport, food, energy, and healthcare networks. They are usually technocratic and widely resented.

RECLAMATIONISTS oppose permanently abandoning contaminated homelands and displaced communities. They are especially influential among British refugees and populations removed from Red or Black zones. Mainstream organizations fund research and lobby for cleanup. Radical groups conduct unauthorized returns.

These tendencies overlap. A person can support planetary defense while demanding local elections, or favor consolidation generally while fighting closure of their own town.

33. #33CORPORATION | Helix Environmental Systems

Keys: Helix Environmental, Helix filter, environmental contractor, Helix Environmental Systems, Helix

    HELIX ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS

Helix Environmental Systems was a multinational industrial water-treatment and hazardous-material company before the war. Demand for filtration, decontamination, and ecological containment transformed it into one of the largest surviving private firms.

Helix manufactures municipal filtration plants, portable decontamination units, sealed agricultural systems, air-handling equipment, sensor packages, and specialized treatment systems for Yellow-zone communities. Its products have made human habitation possible in regions that would otherwise remain evacuated.

Its influence creates dependence. Some cities cannot safely drink local water without proprietary Helix membranes and chemical cartridges. Critics accuse the company of monopolistic contracts, aggressive intellectual-property enforcement, and profiting from permanent contamination. Helix responds that maintaining advanced treatment systems requires factories, research staff, and international supply chains that do not operate for free.

Most people encounter Helix not as a sinister megacorporation but as a logo on filters, water trucks, respirator cartridges, and municipal warning signs. Their equipment is expensive, necessary, and everywhere.

34. #34CORPORATION | Northstar Aerospace Cooperative

Keys: Northstar Aerospace Cooperative, lunar industry, orbital reconstruction, Northstar, Northstar Aerospace

    NORTHSTAR AEROSPACE COOPERATIVE

Northstar formed during the war when several aerospace manufacturers, launch providers, engine companies, and government production facilities were pooled under emergency contracts. It remains a hybrid cooperative rather than a conventional prewar corporation.

Northstar builds launch vehicles, orbital tugs, surveillance satellites, cislunar transports, replacement communications systems, and components for lunar infrastructure. Its engineers are central to rebuilding safe access to orbit after years of debris and combat losses.

The cooperative has become politically associated with off-world expansion. Its leadership argues that a species confined to one inhabited planet remains dangerously vulnerable. Northstar advocates larger permanent lunar settlements, dispersed orbital industry, and eventually major Martian infrastructure.

Critics consider those ambitions premature while billions of survivors still lack reliable housing and power. Supporters answer that planetary redundancy is reconstruction, not luxury.

35. #35CORPORATION | Meridian Recovery Group

Keys: urban salvage, Meridian Recovery, Meridian Recovery Group, demolition contractor, Meridian, salvage contractor

    MERIDIAN RECOVERY GROUP

Meridian Recovery Group is a large salvage, demolition, and industrial-recovery contractor operating across depopulated cities and abandoned infrastructure zones.

Its crews strip usable machinery from closed factories, recover copper and structural metals, clear unstable buildings, reclaim vehicles, dismantle obsolete military sites, and prepare abandoned districts for controlled shutdown. Much of postwar reconstruction depends on salvaged equipment because manufacturing capacity remains limited.

Meridian's reputation is ethically complicated. Ownership becomes murky when a factory's company, employees, and shareholders are all dead, or when an apartment building has been empty for six years but a former resident returns. Governments grant broad salvage rights because unused infrastructure is desperately valuable.

Accusations of looting, corrupt contracts, and premature seizure of property follow the company from city to city. Meridian maintains an enormous legal department and insists it operates only under recognized recovery orders.

A Meridian crew can represent rescue, theft, or both depending on who owns the building being dismantled.

36. #36UNDERWORLD | Grey Market, Glassrunners, Zonewalkers

Keys: Djinn salvage, Glassrunners, Zonewalkers, Zonewalker, alien smuggler, Grey Market, gray market, Glassrunner

    POSTWAR GREY ECONOMY

“The Grey Market” is a collective term for the enormous semi-legal economy in wartime stock, abandoned property, ration goods, military electronics, medicines, fuel, identity documents, and salvaged equipment. It is not a single organization. Nearly everyone condemns it, and many people use it when official supply systems fail.

GLASSRUNNERS specialize in illicit Djinn material. The name comes from “Djinn glass,” the human term for alien ceramic-composite armor and structural material. Some Glassrunners are ordinary scavengers; others are organized smugglers, corporate espionage teams, or covertly funded government proxies. Authentic alien material can be worth a fortune and may also carry biological or chemical contamination.

ZONEWALKERS illegally enter Red and Black zones. They include scavengers, displaced people attempting to reach former homes, thrill seekers, independent researchers, religious pilgrims, journalists, and criminals. Authorities generally consider the practice reckless because rescue teams can be endangered by people who entered without proper equipment.

Not every illicit recovery operation is predatory. In regions where official agencies lack personnel, unauthorized scavengers sometimes discover hazards or survivors before governments do.

37. #37ORGANIZATION | Xenological Contact Office

Keys: alien contact team, Djinn prisoner, XCO, surrendered Djinn, captured Djinn, Xenological Contact Office

    XENOLOGICAL CONTACT OFFICE — XCO

The Xenological Contact Office is the small multinational organization responsible for structured communication with captured, surrendered, or otherwise cooperative Djinn.

XCO teams combine linguistics, mathematics, neuroscience, psychology, biology, intelligence analysis, signal processing, and specialized sensory equipment. Their work is slow because human assumptions about language and social categories often fail.

The Office has established reliable exchanges involving numbers, object labels, spatial relationships, basic requests, individual identification, and simple immediate conditions. Some emotional or physiological concepts appear possible but remain uncertain. Abstract politics, history, religion, kinship, and motives are not securely translated.

XCO is publicly controversial. Many survivors see communication with the enemy as morally repulsive or fear manipulation. Others argue that understanding the Djinn may be humanity's best protection against another war.

One of the most politically difficult facts is that some captured Djinn display behavior humans interpret as fear, grief, and attachment. XCO avoids claiming more than the evidence supports, but the existence of intelligent prisoners makes postwar policy far more complicated than simply treating every surviving alien as unexploded ordnance.

38. #38INFRASTRUCTURE | Communications and Networks

Keys: phone service, satellite, internet, communications, fiber, mesh network, orbital network, radio

    POSTWAR COMMUNICATIONS

The Extinction War devastated satellite infrastructure. Thousands of spacecraft were destroyed, disabled, abandoned, or deliberately deorbited, while debris made many orbital regimes dangerous. Global communications survived through a patchwork of terrestrial fiber, undersea cables, microwave relays, high-frequency radio, surviving satellites, and local mesh networks.

The result is uneven rather than primitive. A city may have excellent high-bandwidth local service and sophisticated AI systems while international connectivity is intermittent. Military and reconstruction networks receive priority. Rural regions may depend heavily on radio relays. Undersea cable landing stations and terrestrial backbone routes are strategic infrastructure guarded accordingly.

Personal devices remain advanced, but cloud dependence has declined because connection cannot be assumed. Local storage, offline maps, peer-to-peer messaging, and edge computing became normal wartime design priorities.

Restoring global satellite coverage is a major Northstar and UEDC project, but debris clearing and launch capacity limit the pace.

39. #39INFRASTRUCTURE | Transportation and Logistics

Keys: rail, transport, checkpoint, convoy, logistics, freight, fuel ration, train, highway

    POSTWAR TRANSPORTATION AND LOGISTICS

Transportation networks are physically extensive but unevenly maintained. Rail receives high priority because it moves people and freight efficiently with limited labor and fuel. Surviving main lines are often busier than secondary roads despite lower overall population.

Civil aviation is dramatically reduced. Airports consolidate into regional hubs, and military or reconstruction flights receive priority. Many smaller airports are abandoned, used for storage, or converted into logistics sites.

Highways remain useful but can cross empty, damaged, or contaminated territory. Checkpoints mark ecological boundaries, jurisdiction changes, and controlled reconstruction zones. Fuel is available but frequently allocated, especially for agricultural and heavy industrial work.

Autonomous and optionally crewed freight vehicles became essential during the manpower crisis. Convoys can travel long distances with only a few human supervisors, though human override remains important in damaged infrastructure and electronic-warfare environments.

Travel between functioning cities is possible; spontaneous travel through unfamiliar territory is less wise than it was before the war.

40. #40SOCIETY | Postwar Medicine

Keys: prosthetics, contamination screening, medicine, doctor, hospital, medical, pregnancy care, prosthetic, radiation

    POSTWAR MEDICINE

Medical technology advanced rapidly during the war in trauma stabilization, prosthetics, tissue repair, infection management, remote diagnostics, and mass-casualty triage. Wartime hospitals learned to treat injuries that would previously have been fatal.

The limiting factor in 2036 is often not knowledge but capacity. There are too few physicians, nurses, technicians, pharmacists, and functioning facilities. Hospitals are heavily consolidated. Rural clinics rely on telemedicine and rotating specialists. Sophisticated equipment may exist beside shortages of ordinary antibiotics, sterile supplies, or trained staff.

Alien exposure created new specialties. People who lived or fought in contaminated zones may receive long-term screening for organ damage, unusual inflammatory conditions, microbial exposure, reproductive effects, or persistent environmental toxins. Medical authorities are careful not to attribute every unexplained symptom to the Djinn.

Reproductive and maternal medicine receives unusual political attention because of the demographic collapse. Governments generally encourage births through healthcare, housing, and financial support, but proposals for more coercive population policy remain deeply controversial.

41. #41SOCIETY | Food and Agriculture

Keys: hydroponics, food distribution, rationing, grain, farm, agriculture, food, famine, ration

FOOD AND AGRICULTURE AFTER THE WAR

Famine killed enormous numbers during the Extinction War, making food security one of the most politically sensitive postwar issues.

Agriculture has been consolidated around regions with reliable soil, water, transport, and labor. Contaminated farmland requires continuous testing. Some former agricultural areas are permanently restricted because alien organisms altered soil chemistry or entered local food chains.

Mechanization and autonomous equipment compensate for missing workers. Controlled-environment agriculture, hydroponics, and high-efficiency greenhouses expanded during wartime shortages, but conventional fields remain essential because calories at planetary scale cannot come from boutique systems alone.

Rationing remains common even where outright scarcity has eased. The issue is distribution as much as production: grain may exist hundreds of kilometers away while damaged rail, fuel shortages, or local violence prevent delivery.

Food depots are therefore treated as strategic infrastructure. Wartime memories of ration riots remain politically powerful, and governments are reluctant to relax reserve requirements quickly.

42. #42TECH | Human Technology Baseline

Keys: technology level, 2036 technology, future tech, hard science fiction, human technology, hard sci-fi

    HUMAN TECHNOLOGY BASELINE

Human civilization in 2036 is technologically advanced but recognizably descended from the early twenty-first century. The Extinction War accelerated specific fields rather than producing universal science-fiction miracles.

Human strengths include machine vision, local artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, cheap drones, electronic warfare, distributed sensors, advanced prosthetics, battlefield medicine, additive manufacturing, improved composites, high-density batteries, automated logistics, and ruggedized network systems.

Humanity does not possess faster-than-light travel, artificial gravity, force fields, teleportation, reactionless drives, general-purpose powered armor, or practical handheld laser rifles. Load-bearing exoskeletons exist but are tools rather than superhuman suits. Most firearms still launch projectiles. Aircraft still depend on aerodynamic lift. Spacecraft require reaction mass and orbital mechanics matter.

The war also produced technological regression in daily life. A soldier may own excellent thermal optics while their apartment receives power only sixteen hours a day. A hospital may fit advanced prosthetics but lack nurses. Autonomous freight may cross a continent while the local bus route operates three days per week.

Djinn discoveries create research opportunities, not instant understanding. Reverse engineering is slow because knowing that an alien device works is not the same as knowing how to manufacture its materials, reproduce its biology, or supply its energy requirements.

43. #43TECH | Human Small Arms

    Keys: M31A2, XM90, machine gun, M38, M31, Lancer, 6.8x51, rifle, small arms, M44

    COMMON HUMAN SMALL ARMS

M31A2 MODULAR INFANTRY RIFLE — Usually called the M31 or “Thirty-One.” A multinational wartime standard using 6.8×51 mm polymer-cased ammunition. It uses a conventional gas-operated action, normally carries a suppressor, and accepts a rugged computerized optic with rangefinding and thermal overlay. The electronics improve effectiveness but are not required for basic operation. The heavier cartridge became popular because lighter prewar intermediate rounds were unreliable against Djinn biological armor.

M44 PERSONAL DEFENSE WEAPON — A compact high-velocity small-caliber weapon issued widely to vehicle crews, medics, support troops, emergency security units, and personnel who needed something lighter than the M31. Millions were produced, making it common in postwar military surplus.

M38 GENERAL-PURPOSE MACHINE GUN — A lightweight 7.62 mm support weapon designed around enormous existing ammunition stocks. It is conservative, reliable, and familiar across multinational units.

XM90 LANCER — A man-portable guided multipurpose launcher using programmable smart munitions. It can perform direct attack, top attack, or delayed detonation against armored targets, fortifications, and large Djinn bioforms. Soldiers use “Lancer problem” as slang for a threat too tough to solve with ordinary rifles.

Human infantry weapons remain firearms because guns are mature, energy-efficient, maintainable, and difficult to disrupt electronically.

44. #44TECH | Human Drones and Autonomous Weapons

Keys: UAV, kamikaze drone, Wren, loitering munition, drone, autonomous weapon, Kestrel, Shrike

    HUMAN DRONES AND AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS

WREN MICRO-UAV — A palm-sized reconnaissance quadrotor used for room, street, and short-range observation. Wrens are cheap enough to lose routinely and became nearly universal among infantry, police, engineers, and search teams.

KESTREL TACTICAL UAV — A larger backpack-transportable reconnaissance aircraft with thermal imaging, lidar, electronic detection, mapping, and communications-relay functions. It can remain airborne for hours but became a common target for Djinn electronic warfare and air defense.

SHRIKE LOITERING MUNITION — A small expendable strike drone used against personnel, sensors, vehicles, and exposed equipment. “Shrike” became a partially generic term for loitering munitions regardless of manufacturer.

Djinn interference forced human designers away from systems requiring uninterrupted remote control. Wartime autonomous platforms can navigate, return home, recognize pre-authorized target classes, and complete limited terminal actions when communications fail. Rules vary by country and mission, and fully independent lethal decision-making remains controversial.

Millions of military drones now exist in a postwar world. Controlling surplus autonomous weapons has become a serious security problem.

45. #45TECH | Human Ground Vehicles

Keys: M12 Badger, armored vehicle, Mule, Mastiff, ALV-8, APC, M19 Mastiff, IFV, Badger

    COMMON HUMAN GROUND VEHICLES

M12 BADGER — An eight-wheeled armored personnel carrier widely produced under multinational wartime standards. It uses a hybrid-electric drivetrain to reduce fuel demand, provide substantial electrical power for sensors and defensive systems, and permit limited quiet movement. Badgers became a familiar sight during curfews, evacuations, and urban security operations as well as frontline combat.

M19 MASTIFF — A tracked infantry fighting vehicle mounting an autocannon, active protection, anti-drone systems, and integrated reconnaissance drones. It is heavily protected by human standards but remains vulnerable to specialized Djinn weapons.

ALV-8 MULE — An autonomous or optionally crewed logistics vehicle designed to move ammunition, food, water, fuel, and medical supplies with minimal manpower. The official designation is rarely used; everyone calls them Mules. Their ability to travel in supervised convoys helped keep supply networks functioning during the manpower crisis.

Postwar Mules are especially common because vehicles that once hauled ammunition now carry grain, medicine, transformers, and construction material. Military designs have become ordinary reconstruction infrastructure.

46. #46TECH | Human Aircraft

Keys: V-32, tiltrotor, air transport, Raven aircraft, military aircraft, attack aircraft

    COMMON HUMAN MILITARY AIRCRAFT

V-32 TILTROTOR — A mature next-generation tiltrotor transport widely used for special operations, casualty evacuation, logistics, and movement into damaged areas without functioning runways. Its engines, controls, and maintenance demands improve substantially on early tiltrotor designs, but it remains loud, mechanically complex, and dependent on skilled crews.

RAVEN FAMILY — “Raven” is the common name for a family of optionally piloted attack and reconnaissance aircraft developed during the war. Depending on mission and electronic conditions, a Raven can carry a crew, operate remotely, or follow limited autonomous flight plans.

Human aviation doctrine emphasizes graceful degradation. Djinn electronic warfare repeatedly demonstrated that a system dependent on perfect satellite navigation or continuous data links could become useless at the worst possible moment. Aircraft therefore retain inertial navigation, local sensors, independent fire-control capability, and human override.

Fixed-wing fighters, transports, helicopters, tankers, and surveillance aircraft remain in service. The war changed their sensors, networking, autonomy, and weapons more than the fundamental physics of flight.

47. #47SPACE | Human Space Forces and Cislunar War

Keys: lunar base, spacecraft, Moon, space war, orbital combat, space force, Earth orbit, cislunar

HUMAN SPACE FORCES AND THE CISLUNAR WAR

Humanity entered the Extinction War as an emerging Solar System civilization with substantial activity in Earth orbit, limited lunar settlement, and small research or industrial operations farther out. The war did not suddenly create space-opera fleets.

Human military spacecraft are functional machines shaped by orbital mechanics. They use chemical propulsion for high-thrust maneuvers, electric propulsion for efficient repositioning, and limited nuclear systems where politically and technically practical. Crews live in cramped pressure vessels. Heat rejection, reaction mass, radiation, debris, and communication delay remain real constraints.

Cislunar combat focused on sensors, logistics, orbital positioning, interception, and denial of infrastructure. Kinetic weapons are devastating but dangerous because debris threatens everyone. Nuclear weapons were used in space under extreme circumstances, producing political and environmental consequences that remain disputed.

Lunar facilities were valuable because they could support tracking, communications, propellant production, astronomy, and protected industry. Several changed hands or were evacuated during the war.

By 2036, humanity can reach orbit and the Moon but does not command space safely. Debris, destroyed stations, damaged launch infrastructure, and the loss of trained personnel make rebuilding orbital civilization a major reconstruction project.

48. #48TECH | Djinn Weapons

Keys: Djinn Burner, alien weapon, Burner, Djinn Needler, directed energy, Djinn gun, Needler

DJINN WEAPONS — HUMAN FIELD CLASSIFICATIONS

NEEDLER — Human term for a family of Djinn electromagnetic projectile weapons. They launch very small projectiles at extremely high velocity with little conventional muzzle flash. Their wounds can be disproportionately severe because high-speed penetrators fragment, tumble, or produce extensive secondary damage. Different Needler types exist, and humans do not understand all ammunition designs.

BURNER — Soldier term for short-range directed-energy weapons that rapidly heat exposed material. They are not magical disintegration beams. Against people they cause catastrophic thermal injuries; against vehicles they damage optics, composites, electronics, and exposed mechanisms. Atmospheric effects and energy demand limit useful range.

GUIDED MUNITIONS — Djinn forces used compact precision weapons with sophisticated seekers, making concealment and electronic countermeasures essential. Human forces learned to destroy sensors and communications rather than merely add armor.

BIOLOGICAL MUNITIONS — Some Djinn attacks deployed engineered organisms, toxins, spores, or ecological agents. These are often difficult to distinguish from terraforming systems and remain among the most feared unexploded hazards.

Djinn weapons are technologically superior in several areas but still obey physical constraints. They require energy, ammunition, maintenance, sensing, and logistics. Human victory depended partly on learning those constraints.

49. #49TECH | Djinn Materials and Systems

Keys: Djinn Glass, alien power, Djinn technology, alien material, alien armor, alien ceramic, alien battery

    DJINN MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY

DJINN GLASS is the common human term for a family of translucent or semi-translucent ceramic-composite materials recovered from alien armor, structures, and vehicles. It offers exceptional strength and thermal performance for its mass. Human laboratories can analyze samples but cannot yet reproduce equivalent material economically at industrial scale.

Djinn energy-storage systems also outperform common human technology, though recovered devices vary greatly and damaged units can be hazardous. Understanding their chemistry does not automatically provide access to required manufacturing purity or biological processing techniques.

Much Djinn equipment blurs the distinction between mechanical and biological engineering. Sensors may contain living components. Structural materials can repair limited damage through controlled growth. Some production systems resemble bioreactors more than machine tools.

Reverse engineering proceeds unevenly. Humans are good at copying interfaces, adapting useful fragments, and learning tactical weaknesses. Reproducing an entire alien industrial chain is far harder. A recovered component may depend on precursor materials, engineered organisms, or fabrication environments unavailable on Earth.

Postwar claims that alien technology will instantly solve energy, disease, or reconstruction are regarded skeptically by serious researchers.

50. #50SPACE | Djinn Interstellar and Aerospace Technology

Keys: interstellar ship, Djinn spacecraft, alien spacecraft, alien ship, Djinn ship, Djinn propulsion

    DJINN INTERSTELLAR AND AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGY

The Djinn crossed interstellar distance, making their spacecraft the most strategically important artifacts humanity has ever encountered. No confirmed evidence demonstrates faster-than-light travel.

Recovered vessels suggest advanced high-efficiency propulsion, exceptional thermal engineering, dense energy systems, extensive automation, and biological life-support technologies designed for long endurance. Some evidence is consistent with dormancy or drastically reduced metabolic activity during transit, but no complete intact interstellar transport system has been placed into human service.

Djinn atmospheric craft favor high acceleration, efficient lifting bodies, advanced materials, and sophisticated autonomous control. They are superior to most human aircraft in performance but are not immune to missiles, kinetic weapons, sensor damage, or logistics failure.

Human analysts remain uncertain whether captured interstellar vessels were purpose-built warships, transports modified for combat, colony ships, or multi-role craft. That uncertainty is one reason estimates of the original expedition's purpose vary so widely.
