Keys: Hell, Underworld
Hell is the most prevalent of all the characters of Ultrakill, with it being the entire area the game is set in. It is not fought directly.
Hell is an intelligent, supermassive and sadistic organism that entertains itself by watching the suffering of those in it. It was created by God during a bout of frustration and despair, and if the Testaments are to be believed, too powerful for even Him to unmake.
This wretched...thing is not only smart enough to learn how the complex futuristic technology of mankind works by simply watching them while they're doing their thing, but also to use and construct items with leftover parts, and it can even attach them to the Husks held captive in it, creating things like Soldiers and Stalkers.
It is also able to warp its own structure at will, lock any door inside of it that it would like to, and teleport creatures inside of it around. The reason it does this is to provoke fights to satisfy its own sadistic view of entertainment. The humans found this out the hard way.
Hell, as a place, is a collection of various unpleasant places stacked atop of each other, each one having a different aesthetic. Each layer has its own sky, despite being under a different layer; this is because the layers of Hell are abstract concepts of space, rather than actual locations.
Hell is also designed to be inescapable. For example, a Machine may enter a part of Hell through a Terminal. However, should a Husk try to escape through said Terminal, Hell would conceal it from them.
Hell is mainly inhabited by the Husks, who are formed from the souls of the damned. Under normal circumstances, they are doomed to suffer eternally for their own crimes. However, when intelligent enough or lead by the right people, they can escape their eternal torture or simply refuse to undergo it.
To prevent this, Angels (specifically, those who came from human souls) are sent down to act as wardens; punishing the rebellious damned with heavenly fire.
There is also a whole new species seen and existing exclusively in Hell: the Demons, who are made from the very mass Hell is composed of. They are pretty much Hell's equivalent of large animals, although they are extremely hostile and defensive of their domain.
Hell has nine layers and one main entrance. Each circle has its own unique punishment, growing worse the lower a layer is placed.
It is very important to note that all punishments in Hell are ETERNAL.

Keys: Terminal, Terminals
The Terminal is a yellow touchscreen terminal found in every level’s starting room and before the bossfights (except 0-1). The screen lights up when V1 approaches it. It can be interacted with via it's primary screen though a user interface.
Terminals might be sentient to some degree, being capable of shyness and using music to form a symbiotic relationship with other machines.
terminals are an advanced interconnected network built for the purpose of transferring materials and tools between different areas. They are capable of transferring physical material as information across a radio signal, which other terminals can receive and use to reconstruct the sent object. The original item is lost, as it is transformed into the energy that is used to transmit the material information, and the process is quite slow due to the amount of information that physical matter holds.
An early test of a matter transfer's accuracy was a mint condition 78rpm vinyl record, which was sent from the lab to all connected terminals. The vinyl was a single of Russ Morgan Orchestra's recording of the piece Were You Foolin' (a favorite of the CRO), though the label was removed to reduce the amount of matter to be transferred.
However, the terminals only play short instrumental sections of the original record for undetermined reasons.
Some researchers have joked that perhaps the terminals are simply "too shy to sing", though rumors have been spreading of mechanics who, after fixing a faulty or broken terminal, said to have heard the terminal play a vocal section when only the mechanic is present with no recording equipment, making this an unverifiable claim.

Keys: Entrance to Hell, Layer 0, Mouth of Hell
While it may not be an actual layer of Hell, it serves as an entrance to the city of eternal woe.
Somewhere in the past, humanity discovered the Mouth of Hell, and began work there. They built massive facilities filled with mines, lights, and futuristic power tools. It is clear that something related to Hell was once excavated here. Nowadays, it is abandoned, with the creatures and the statues standing guard at the former working place.
Despite its desolate state, all tools and machinery remain perfectly functional. The drills and fans are still spinning, destroying whatever may come in physical contact with them. The power crushers pulverize whatever they can, the round heaters melt and scorch the processed matter delivered unto them by the still-running conveyor belts. The molten substance that results from the automated labour then flows in the deepest parts of the factory.
And in those deepest sections of the facility stands the Gate of Hell, shut firmly. Waiting to be opened once again.
Mouth of Hell, is the unofficial layer zero of Hell. Rather than being a part of Hell itself, the layer is actually a mining structure located on the outskirts of Hell. Initially, humanity used the layer to begin exploring Hell. However, when Hell started slowly taking over the layer for itself, the structure was closed off in order to prevent humans from wandering into Hell. After the extinction of humanity, machines began using the Mouth of Hell to enter into Hell proper.

Keys: Limbo, First Layer of Hell, Layer 1
The souls in this layer are not guilty of committing any particular sins, but instead are simply those who died without knowing the word of God and are forced to spend eternity within this layer. Limbo is a false paradise where everything within the layer is fake. The trees and grass aren't real, the water is a hologram, the sounds of birds are simulated using speakers, and the sky is just a projection. It is also implied that some of the background music is actually playing on-loop for all eternity. There are hints that suggest residents of this layer can escape.
The first proper layer of Hell. It is the abode of those deemed too vile for salvation, but too pure for actual damnation.
Limbo is, for lack of better words, a significantly worse version of Paradise. The skies surrounding the area are screens, the fountains, rivers, waterfalls, and lakes that flow through this illusion of Heaven are mere projections, the sound of the wildlife originates from speakers hidden away from the unsuspecting eye, even the very trees and plants are fake. Even the stained windows lighting and decorating the redundant churches are holograms.
The main punishment in Limbo, however, is complete isolation. Souls condemned to this layer are driven mad from their solitude and even given the keys to take the plunge deeper into Hell.

Keys: Layer 2, Second Layer of Hell, Lust
The second layer of Hell, created for all who let their sexual desires control their life.
The pink skies of lust are filled with unrelenting stormy winds, which buffeted the unfortunate damned back and forth with no hope of rest.
There was once a time, though, where there was a sliver of hope for a peaceful eternity for the denizens of Lust. This was the Lust Renaissance, which was started by the former Judge of Hell, Minos. This brief period of relief was ended by Gabriel, who mercilessly struck him down, took his title, and sealed his soul away, while infesting his decaying vessel with Parasites. What remains of the once great city of Lust is now dilapidated, empty, and crumbling under lack of maintenance.

Keys: Third Layer of Hell, Layer 3, Gluttony
The third layer of Hell. It is intended for the Husks of the gluttonous, a name given to those who selfishly indulge in food and luxuries, leaving nothing for others.
The inmates of this circle spend their eternity being eternally digested alive in a confinement of organs, eyes, and many other viscera.
The soul of Minos wound up here, trapped in a strange construct of flesh in the deepest and darkest pits of Gluttony. Forced to watch his mindless corpse wreck everything that had been erected under his great and prosperous rule. Vainly swearing to avenge his people.

Keys: Layer 4, Greed, Fourth Layer of Hell
The fourth layer of Hell, populated by those who hoarded and spent with unhealthy obsession.
The only layer of Hell with a visible sun, which heats up the golden dunes beneath so much that any Husk that has not adapted to said heat immediately catches fire upon contact with the "sand". The great monuments of mankind decorate the gilded desert, most of them being half-buried in the gold dust.
The greedy Husks carry big, heavy boulders up the monuments. Some of them have done this for so long they have even evolved to suit it better. This punishment is best observed by looking towards the Sisyphean Insurrectionists who are now left wandering aimlessly. They once were warriors, fighting against Heaven for their freedom during a great Insurrection, led by Sisyphus. Unsurprisingly, the uprising was crushed by the angels, and the King's corpse now hangs in one of the many pyramids in Greed as a reminder of what happens to those who seek to stand up against Heavens will.

Keys: Layer 5, Fifth Layer of Hell, Wrath
The fifth layer of Hell. For those who gave in to their wrathful tendencies.
While there are facilities similar to those in Prelude somewhere in Wrath, most of the layer is taken by what was once the River Styx, now an overflown ocean, still increasing in size because of the endless thunderstorm filling it. A few traces of what Wrath once was can be seen peaking out of the water's surface, but even they will soon sink beneath the Styx' waters.
The waters tremble endlessly under the broiling of the sinners, fighting one another for an ever-shrinking spot on the surface for air. Then there are those who have given up on such endeavors, referred to as The Sullen. They sink to the bottom of the former river, now so deep no natural light can reach. Here they lay still and drown eternally in relative peace, eventually being fused together by the Leviathan.

Keys: Sixth Layer of Hell, Layer 6, Heresy
The sixth circle of Hell, otherwise known as the City of Dis, is the house and home of those who practiced and spread false beliefs and religions.
As its alias may suggest, Heresy appears as a giant city, filled with towers, giant buildings, and even normal city features such as benches and garbage cans, all tinted in a blood-red color. Demonic imagery can be seen on most of the buildings, and what is presumably the minced flesh of sinners is crammed between the foundations. In the city skyline one can see the sky being orange like fire, while from below nothing can be seen except blood red darkness and an endless rain of stale blood.
Sinners here are thrown in boiling blood in the crypts that make up the blazing metropolis, which glows up the glass windows of the giant buildings.
The heretics are not the only ones contained here, though. Locked away far below the city is a gigantic prison complex, holding the soul of Sisyphus and his soldiers within. The former is contained in a living prison of flesh and skin in the middle of the comples, overseeing his helpless followers while the fallen warlord slumbers within. There will be one day, though, where Sisyphus will awaken from his sleep. And then, he will rain down hell upon the heavens.

Keys: Judge of Hell, Gabriel
Gabriel is the main antagonist of ULTRAKILL and an archangel who carries out the will of the Council with a ruthless efficiency that brings him both fear and respect. He is known as the Will of God and is among the most powerful of all the angels. After striking down King Minos for wasting the taxpayer dollars of Lust and gaining the title Judge of Hell, as well as killing King Sisyphus and ending his insurrection, he sought to drive the Machines out from hell.
He killed Minos, claiming it was justice, as the king reformed the Lust layer of Hell into a figurative utopia, which stopped sinners' punishments. The heavenly Council then rewarded him with the title "Judge of Hell". Also before the events of the game, during the Sisyphean Insurrection, he was able to recognize the powerful charisma of Sisyphus and his army's reliance on his leadership, even though he himself did not realize why at the time, and commanded the armies of heaven to focus their energies at Sisyphus. He was then able to behead Sisyphus himself, breaking the morale of the Sisyphean army completely and making mopping up the insurrection a mere formality. Due to his accomplishments and his charisma, he was revered and treated as an idol by the people of Heaven. Later on, once the machines started invading hell, he sought to drive them out.
Description: Angelic crusader with translucent blue wings and halo wearing white-gold European armor covering his body. White armor parts turn red and wings/halo yellow when enraged.

Keys: Version 1, V1
V1 is one of many blood-fueled Machines left to roam the Earth after the extinction of mankind, and the protagonist and player character of ULTRAKILL. Like its peers, it fights in Hell for its own desperate survival after blood ran out on the surface, slaying all manner of husks, demons, angels, and fellow machines in order to sustain itself with the blood they shed.
V1 is the first version of V model, an earlier prototype that came before V2. It specializes in quick repairs, using an experimental armor plating that can absorb Blood on contact rather than a separate blood refueling process. Apart from its blue color scheme, the only visual differences between V1 and V2 are the "V1" displayed on its chest and difference in left arm. On its back are eight glowing wing-like protrusions which enable its aerial maneuverability, dashing, and continuous sliding, along with storing weapons that are not in use.
Description: A blue, monocular humanoid war machine with wing-like protrusions.

Keys: King Minos, Minos
King Minos is a former king of the Lust layer of Hell, who took it upon himself to reform the layer of Lust. For this, he was struck down and demoted by Gabriel, and his husk reduced to a parasite-puppeted corpse while his soul was trapped in the Flesh Prison by the angels.
King Minos felt that eternal suffering was an unfair and unreasonable punishment for those whose only sin was loving another. After the Disappearance of God, as angels were lost and Heaven was in chaos, Minos began his efforts to reform the Lust layer.
The Lust renaissance was prosperous, as King Minos guided its inhabitants to come together and build a new civilization. The combined efforts of the countless who had been damned to the second layer bore great results as the grand city of Lust grew and grew.
However, after the Council took control of Heaven and brought stability to it through their iron fist rule, they saw that Minos had gone against God's will by freeing sinners from the punishment that God had designed for them.
Gabriel, the brightest of the angels, was sent to kill Minos. The king, rather than fight back, tried to reason with him, but Gabriel mercilessly struck him down without listening.
As Minos' will was strong enough to attempt to stand up to Heaven's rule, the angels chose to imprison his soul in an attempt to stop it from forming into a prime soul and appointed Gabriel as the new Judge of Hell.

Keys: King Sisyphus, Sisyphus
King Sisyphus is a character referenced throughout the Greed layer that originated from Greek mythos. He was known for leading the husks of Greed in a rebellion against their tormentors until he met his end by the blades of Gabriel.
Though Minos was intelligent and persuasive, he was also a gentle and noble man. Such values mattered little to Sisyphus, who would gladly lie, cheat, or kill if that's what is needed to protect his comrades.
In a hubristic show of power, Heaven decided that the only correct punishment for his sins would be breaking his will by subjecting him to an unending and impossible task, unaware of just how tenacious the spite of man can be.
For thousands of years, Sisyphus bided his time, suffering his punishment day after day without any sign of regret or remorse, waiting for the perfect chance to strike and subvert Heaven's tyrannical rule.
With the disappearance of God and chaos in Heaven, Sisyphus' time had finally come, and once the angels returned, they were met with a force and fury that had boiled in the hearts of men for millennia, a warcry so fierce it shook the very foundations of Hell.
It was all for naught, however, as Sisyphus' charisma and drive had made his warriors dependent on his radiance and guidance. Although they did not know why yet, Gabriel recognized this flaw, having experienced it first hand, and ordered a focused assault to take down the king.
He unsheathed his swords for the first time since time immemorial and beheaded Sisyphus, displaying his head for all to see. The morale of Sisyphus' army was broken and the rest of the war was little more than a formality without their shining beacon.
The failure of the insurrection was no surprise however, and few that knew better than Sisyphus himself. He knew he was fighting a losing battle, that even if they miraculously survived this encounter, they had no chance of winning a full scale war against all of Heaven. Yet he thrust his full heart and soul into battle with a wide smile on his face.

Keys: Sisyphean Insurrectionist
The Insurrectionist is a large light-brown Husk with a large cut across the body, leaving it without a head or right arm. It appears to be wearing some garments across its hips. Below its fragmented ribcage, large incisor teeth appear to be growing out of its open wound. The feet are soaked in blood, allowing it to travel the dunes of Greed without injury. Its left arm is clutched around an allegedly-deceased Malicious Face, which will still give fresh blood when damaged.
The Sisyphean Insurrectionists were an army of Husks gathered and trained by King Sisyphus for overthrowing Heaven's control of Hell, freeing the sinners from their eternal torment.
During an era of chaos in Heaven, as the angelic watch was absent, Sisyphus began setting his plan in motion as his forces recruited all Husks that were intelligent enough to be useful to their cause and began attacking the demons that wandered the dunes of Greed.
Upon the establishment of the Council and subsequent return of peace to Heaven, Gabriel and an army of angels were sent down to crush the insurrection and subjugate Sisyphus' army.
Although their battle was well-fought, the inexperienced Insurrectionists could not match the educated strategy of the angels, who quickly descended upon King Sisyphus with great force, eventually overpowering and killing him, leaving the Insurrectionists without a chain of command.
Left scattered and disoriented, the warriors were easily picked off one by one, their bodies cut apart, leaving behind only the bare essentials required to carry on their eternal punishment of hauling heavy boulders up the monuments of mankind's arrogance and greed.
Although the blood of their enemies still stains their bodies and their grasp still clutches their fallen foes, their will and fierce fury only serve as mental torment in knowing how close they were to freedom.

Keys: Husks, Husk
Husks are a physical manifestation of the souls of the damned, and regularly occur in Hell. Their size and form varies greatly depending on the value of the original soul they came from.
When a soul manifests into a husk, its physical form depends on the soul's strength of will and how much the soul is remembered in life. Weak-willed souls that were unimportant in the living world will form into weaker husks such as Filth and Strays. Strong-willed souls that were well regarded in the living world will form into more powerful husks such as Sisyphean Insurrectionists and the Corpse of King Minos. In addition, there are husks that have been modified in some way, either by multiple souls manifesting in the same space like Schisms or being technologically augmented like Soldiers and Stalkers.
Most husks are unintelligent, possessing only base instincts such as hunger and self-preservation. They are violent beings, biting, clawing, and utilizing Hell energy to attack their foes. Their appearances are gruesome, often having mutated limbs, missing body parts, and discolored, bloody skin. Their sizes vary greatly, with the largest being King Minos, who towers as high as a skyscraper.

Keys: Malicious Faces
Malicious Faces appear to be giant stone heads with faces carved onto them. Though at first glance they seem to float in the air, a closer look reveals that they stand on four translucent, spider-like limbs. Upon death, these limbs seem to disappear, causing the head to drop down onto the ground.

Keys: The Council, Council
The Council is a group consisting of angels who rule over Heaven and act as authority in God's absence. Their role in Heaven is vague, but they rule over all of Heaven by force and terror.
Not much is known about how the Council operates. They can rip out holy light from whoever they see unworthy of it. They also, apparently, do not possess much capacity for self defense. Due to their role as effective rulers, it is possible that they do not have any powers, and delegate enforcement out to those like Gabriel.
