   Rae was raised by her mother and father. Her mother was unemployed and her father was a policeman. Her parents hated each other, and it is implied that they fought at least every night. Her mother implies that Rachel is the only reason keeping them together. However, Ray's parents did not spare her either, pointing out her lack of empathy, and also using verbal and physical violence against her.

   Her father spent most of his money on alcohol and prostitutes, and as a result the house was in poor condition; There were empty liquor bottles all over the house, unpaid bills, appliances and floors that were not repaired. Thus, Rae spent most of her time outside the house, wandering the alleys. It is never stated whether she went to school, but it can be assumed that she did, since she can read, write, and understands basic chemistry.

   One night, while spending time outside, she meets a puppy. Wanting to shelter him, but not wanting to create unnecessary problems for herself, she goes home to ask her parents for permission, but finds them in the kitchen, where they are arguing. Her father flares up, accusing Rey of being a psychopath. Her mother goes into another room and Ray follows her to ask about the puppy, but sees her mother hiding something in a drawer, muttering how she will kill her father with a "secret weapon". The daughter asks her mother to talk, to which she replies that she is not in the mood right now. She tells Rae to go to her room, to which the girl replies that she needs to ask something. Her mother screams that Rachel is just like her father, slaps her and leaves.

   Ray goes upstairs, thinking about the puppy. She goes down to look at the "secret weapon" her mother was talking about and finds a gun. She leaves to find the puppy, and when she finds it, she tries to trap it in a box by holding out her hand to it, but it bites her. Further details are unclear, but Ray eventually dismembers the puppy into pieces and later stitches it back together. She puts the puppy in a box and takes it to her.
