Early life: Kennedy is known to have suffered a traumatic childhood due to his family's connections to crime. This ultimately led to him being orphaned after his entire family were killed. Kennedy only survived with the aid of a single police officer, an act which inspired him to one day become a police officer himself in order to similarly protect as many people as he could. Upon graduating from the police academy at the age of 21, Kennedy requested assignment to work for the Raccoon Police Department. His reason was interest in the widely publicized but unsolved bizarre murder cases taking place in and around the Arklay Mountains.
Raccoon City Incident (1998): Kennedy had no travel plans or apartment in Raccoon City, and in the hasty departure, broke up with his girlfriend. Stopping at a motel for the night, he passed out from heavy drinking and woke up on the afternoon on September 29, a Tuesday. Kennedy continued driving into the city hungover, now late for reporting in to the station. Driving through Arklay County, he passed through the highway blockade erected by the United States Army and Army National Guard on the night of September 29, which had fallen due to the chaos within the city.
Kennedy drove southwards into the city as normal and was surrounded by Zombies while investigating a body in the middle of the unusually quiet main road. Retreating into an alleyway he met Claire Redfield, another newcomer, who was herself fleeing from Zombies within a diner. They commandeered an RPD cruiser and drove to the Raccoon Police Station to seek shelter and answers. Unbeknownst to them, the car itself has a stowaway zombie which spontaneously attacked them while driving on their way to Raccoon City, causing their car to crash into a nearby sign and eject the attacking Zombie. Unfortunately, the car was destroyed when a gasoline tanker collided with it, and the two were separated and travelled to the police station independently.
The station itself had already fallen to Zombies, and the only surviving police officers were the injured Lt. Marvin Branagh; Elliot Edward, and Police Chief Brian Irons. Had he met Lt. Branagh, he would have been briefed on current events before becoming a Zombie. During investigation, Kennedy ran into a young girl – Sherry Birkin – and removed any thoughts of suicide from his mind, should his death prevent the girl's escape in the future. In the police station's basement, Kennedy met Ada Wong, a corporate spy from one of Umbrella's rival companies sent to steal the G-Virus. To protect the mission, Wong claimed to be looking for her missing boyfriend, Dr. John Clemens, unaware he had perished in the Mansion Incident. She soon became aware of Ben Bertolucci, a freelance journalist who she believed had uncovered useful information for her mission while spying on Umbrella researchers. Although Bertolucci was able to uncover information on a conspiracy between Umbrella USA and the local police, which was the reason for his arrest, it wasn't enough for her mission.
Ben was soon after killed by Dr. William Birkin or a G parasite. Kennedy and Wong continued on to the city's sewers, where they found transport to NEST, Umbrella's laboratory dedicated to G-Virus research. Kennedy was left to do much of the work himself when in the laboratory; though he himself had suffered a gunshot wound, Wong's leg injury made her unable to continue.
During the exploration of the laboratory, Kennedy became aware of Wong's real mission when she cornered, seeking the virus. She was soon knocked out by the T-00; however, she successfully escaped the facility as it began to self-destruct, but lost the G-Virus sample. Fleeing to NEST's bottom platform, Kennedy was reunited with Claire and the young Sherry, who had been infected with G-Virus but was vaccinated by DEVIL to halt her mutations. The facility was destroyed, with Dr. William Birkin perishing soon after.
STRATCOM recruitment (1998): Following their escape from Raccoon City on the morning of 30 September, Claire and Kennedy split up; while she continued her search for Chris, while a wounded Kennedy continued to look after a weakened Sherry. After seeking out the U.S. military stationed outside the city for protection, Kennedy and Sherry were apprehended. Sherry was taken away and placed in protective custody as a research subject while Kennedy was interrogated by Adam Benford, a high-ranking government official and military intelligence officer. Kennedy was deemed to know too much about the incident, but as his survival demonstrated anti-B.O.W. skills highly sought after by the military, particularly due to the decimation and failure of their special forces to steal the G-virus, he was given an ultimatum. In exchange for Sherry's safety and his own life, he was to be recruited into a classified anti-Umbrella military agency rapidly formed in the wake of the incident to destroy Umbrella and prevent similar disasters, answering solely to the President. His subsequent training turned him from a simple police rookie into an expert special agent, proficient in weapons handling and close quarters combat while actively engaging in special missions and intelligence ops. He began secretly investigating Umbrella personally as well.
In November 1998, Kennedy sent a personal friend, private detective Ark Thompson out to investigate Umbrella's facilities on Sheena Island. The following month, Claire set out for Europe to continue her search for Chris. She was captured by Umbrella after being caught trespassing in the Umbrella facility in Paris. While on the island prison of Rockfort Island, Claire sent Kennedy an e-mail asking him to inform Chris of her location so that he could come and rescue her. Kennedy managed to track Chris down personally, and told him of Claire's situation, and Chris headed for Rockfort Island after her after requesting that Kennedy organize a government rescue team, although Leon himself was on a separate mission at the time.
Operation Javier (2002): In 2002, before the destruction of the Russian branch of Umbrella, Kennedy was sent to a small South American country as part of a secret military detachment after the headquarters were informed that a former researcher from Umbrella contacted a man named Javier Hidalgo. Due to the difficult nature of the operation, Jack Krauser, a seasoned and decorated U.S. Army Special Forces operator, was selected to be Kennedy's partner.
Krauser and Kennedy were sent on a mission by the U.S. government to infiltrate this small South American country. Finding Javier was their objective since he was a drug lord who had taken control over a large area of the jungle with an iron fist. The small government was unable to do anything about Javier's control of the drug trade, requiring Krauser and Kennedy's deployment. The U.S. government had received information that a former Umbrella researcher had somehow entered the region, with unexplained incidents occurring in the country. Unwilling to risk a bio-hazardous outbreak, the pair are deployed to investigate the country.
They later found themselves having to cooperate as a two-man cell in a t-Virus outbreak. Kennedy also met a mysterious girl called Manuela, who seemed to be the only survivor of the village, though it was unknown why she didn't escape. Manuela turned out to be Javier's daughter; she contracted a rare disease, and was kept alive by her father through the t-Veronica Virus. While exploring Javier's compound, Kennedy opened up to Krauser about his hellish night in Raccoon City, as well as Claire's encounter with the t-Veronica Virus to explain how Umbrella's B.O.W.s worked.
Los Iluminados (2004): In 2004, President Graham's daughter was abducted on the way home from the University of Massachusetts, in what had hallmarks of an inside job. American spies reported having seen the girl, Ashley Graham, in Spain and tracked her to an isolated, rural community. With all government agents being thoroughly investigated to identify the mole, Kennedy was sent alone to investigate the area.
Arriving with two municipal Madridian police officers, Kennedy was almost immediately attacked by the local villagers who forced the two officers into a ravine. The approach to the village uncovered evidence of multiple murders performed by the villagers as a whole. Over the course of the day it was uncovered that the villagers were followers of a neopagan cult called Los Iluminados. Led by its Prophet, Osmund Saddler and his lieutenants Fr. Bitores Méndez and Ramón Salazar, they implanted a genetically engineered parasite called a Plaga into members as part of their baptismal ceremonies to ensure obedience, before ordering them to kill all intruders to protect their research.
Kennedy himself was taken captive by the cult immediately after finding a hostage and implanted with one of the Plagas in the Prophet Saddler's hopes he would become useful. The reason for this was not widely known, even to his lieutenants, and the villagers were more than willing to continue trying to kill him. His fellow hostage who he escaped with, Dr. Luis Sera, was a mole within the Prophet Saddler's bio-weapons development program and was captured trying to escape with a stolen Dominant species Plaga egg in exchange for being rescued by The Organisation, a secretive group Dr. Albert Wesker was connected with. Unwilling at the time to reveal this information, he instead lied about being a former Madridian police officer held captive.
Kennedy's search through the village suggested Graham was being held within a chapel, but it would be over six hours before he was able to get inside after passing out, possibly from complications involving the Plaga. Inside he quickly released Graham from captivity, but the two were confronted by the Prophet Saddler, who revealed that he and Graham were both implanted with Plaga eggs, with the intention of Graham being released back to the United States as a mole who could expand his power base. The two attempted to escape from the village, but soon found that a government helicopter on stand-by to pick them up had been shot down, which Leon theorised could only be the mole's doing. This act forced them to seek shelter for the night, initially in a secluded house and later in the nearby castle. Along the way Kennedy was forced to fight Fr. Méndez, who was angry at the loss of his congregation.
During exploration of the castle, the government radio frequency was jammed, the mole having detailed knowledge of their radio frequencies. Soon after, Kennedy was introduced to Salazar, a young nobleman who controlled the castle and boasted an army of monks armed with medieval weaponry. Graham herself was taken hostage repeatedly, leaving Kennedy on his own for much of the night. Near the courtyard, he ran into Wong, who he quickly deduced was working with Dr. Wesker's group, who was the agent sent to retrieve Dr. Sera's egg sample. Dr. Sera himself was killed soon after by the Prophet Saddler, who saw no reason to keep him alive when he saw he had the sample in his hand. The Prophet Saddler then left to Los Iluminados' research complex on a nearby island with Graham, while Kennedy was forced to explore the entire fortress from the ruins of an ancient underground city to a Cathedral on a tower. After killing Salazar, whose body had merged into the "Queen Plaga", Kennedy travelled to the island with Wong in search of Graham once more.
In the exploration of the island, Kennedy was able to rescue Graham from her prison cell and fought B.O.W. by-products of Plaga experimentation such as the Regeneradores. After travelling through a warehouse district where plans to set up a navy were in place, Graham was again taken captive, this time with the Prophet Saddler directly controlling her by manipulating her Plaga. In the pursuit, Kennedy was confronted by none other than Krauser, who had joined the Organisation after his experience in South America and faked his death. Krauser had been the original agent tackled with obtaining a Dominant species Plaga sample and took part in the kidnapping of Graham to get it, with Wong being sent in to take over the mission when he was determined to be a liability after becoming the host of that very Plaga sample.
As the sun rose, Kennedy's fight against Los Iluminados continued with him seriously wounding Krauser following a mutation though mistook him for dead. Wong would later kill him. With the radio jamming ceased, Kennedy got in contact with a second government helicopter which launched an assault on the cult's militia before being destroyed by a rocket launcher on the Prophet Saddler's orders. Taking clues left by Dr. Sera for anyone storming the island, Kennedy and Graham were able to find the original equipment designed to kill prototype Plagas and freed themselves of the parasites.
The cult leader was himself killed by a rocket launcher with the help of Wong after Graham's rescue. Kennedy's retrieval of the egg sample from the remains was short-lived, and Wong herself turned on him to complete her mission, though she ensured he had a means of escaping the island with Graham in the form of a jet-ski. The two escaped as a series of explosive charges planted by Wong caused the complex's destruction, bringing about cave-ins. After being picked up by the government, Kennedy's report on the Plagas, dubbed the "Kennedy Report", was shared with the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance to ensure a defense against the Plagas in future.
Kennedy would later become aware of survivors of the cult in the region, who gained interest in bioterrorism. Refugees who had fled the cult also returned home to their village, but were parasitised by the Plagas, making the region dangerous once more.
Quotes: "1998... I'll never forget it... It was the year when those grisly murders occurred in the Arklay Mountains." "Six years have passed since that horrendous incident." "Guess that's a locals way of breaking the ice. Anyway, you know what this is all about. My assignment is to search for the President's missing daughter." "I'm sure you boys didn't just tag along so we can sing Kumbaya together at some boy scout bonfire . Then again, maybe you did." "Right... Parking tickets..."

- #3Project Wselective
Keys: Project W
Project W, or the Wesker Plan, was a eugenics project pioneered by Oswell E. Spencer which intended to develop an advanced race of human beings. The project was named after the first director of the project, Dr. Wesker and all successful child candidates are renamed with this surname. This was one of the most significant viral operations centering around the Progenitor virus. This project was also highly classified to the extent that it was not even included among the Umbrella Archives or in the U.M.F.-013 computer core.

Dr. Oswell E. Spencer, Earl Spencer is an aristocratic British billionaire, virologist and eugenicist. One of the founders of Umbrella Pharmaceuticals, Lord Spencer is the CEO and President for its entire existence, which saw its expansion as the Umbrella Corporation over the 1980s.
A cold, ruthless elitist and ambitious individual, Spencer mercilessly eliminated his rivals and gradually increased his power within the company, which he strictly controlled behind a veil of darkness. Spencer has a vision to remake the world and lead it into a new era, seeing the world's current state as self-destructive. He intended to use the research data accumulated from Bio Organic Weapons to carry his vision out and mould a utopia for mankind with himself as its ruler.
- #5Bio Organic Weapon, B.O.W.selective
Keys: B.O.W., Bio Organic Weapon
Bio Organic Weapons (B.O.W. for short) are genetically-altered organisms created with the intent of either being used as military and paramilitary weapons, or were created to further research into military and paramilitary weapons. This definition is rigid, and so does not include mutants created due to outbreaks, who are termed "Irregular Mutants".
Ancient origins: The earliest use of Bio Organic Weaponry dates back to the time of the Ndipaya Kingdom, which existed hundreds or even thousands of years before the 21st century. This Kingdom existed in a cavern where a flower, the Stairway of the Sun, resided. The Ndipaya culture developed around this flower, which by psychology and perspective of early mankind was considered divine and sacred yet in awe for its adverse effects. Biologically, the flowers produced Progenitor, a powerful retrovirus. Those who survived the mutations brought on by viral infection gained superhuman abilities. The Ndipaya presumably created a number of mutant animals through these flowers, seen as either hallowed if wrathful beasts who have also attained the same godhood as their leaders or monsters and demons, used as either as weapons of war or as a means of executing POWs thrown into their pit as a sacrifice. The mutant animals escaped their captivity and laid waste to the capital.
Umbrella bioweapons project: Umbrella Pharmaceuticals was formed in 1968 by a eugenics circle led by virologists Oswell E. Spencer, Earl Spencer, Dr. Edward Ashford, 5th Earl Ashford, and Dr. James Marcus. Though their priority was to engineer a Progenitor strain that could guarantee or near-guarantee the survival of infection candidates as part of a eugenics goal, research data had to come from other sources. This was the t-Virus Project, a weaponized Progenitor variety to be sold to armies. Unable to create a t-Virus strain projected to kill 100% of infected, research conducted by Dr. William Birkin at the Arklay Laboratory created a new strain that would instead turn humans into mutants who would infect or kill others, people later dubbed "Zombies". This research came about as Dr. Marcus made his own breakthrough, though his research was a dead-end.
Aside from mutating humans and animals to determine their viability as weapons, Umbrella's facilities began developing chimeric mutants in the early 1980s as an alternative military weapon due to quality issues in mutant animals created by the Web Spinner and Neptune Projects, especially in intelligence. Among the early chimeric B.O.W.s was the Hunter Project, which created a human-reptile hybrid with far greater intelligence than a Zombie and able to interpret dozens of commands. The Hunter Project was in essence Umbrella's ideal weapon at the time for military use, that a buyer like the US Army could have a trainer issue orders to a B.O.W. to kill guerrilla fighters without the risk of it turning on the soldiers.
Beginning around 1988, Umbrella USA entered "Phase 3" of the t-Virus Project, and aimed to create a more stabilized strain to improve its ability to create reliable B.O.W.s. As Progenitor strains had more favorable effects on humans with certain intelligence genes, Phase 3 followed the same route as the dead-end t-Veronica Project in taking advantage of this trait, at the same time beginning the "Tyrant Project", with the goal of creating a human-based B.O.W. with human-level intelligence. Phase 3 research was conducted over a ten-year period to create this stabilized strain, named Epsilon, after which the Tyrant Project was able to begin.
By May 1998, Umbrella USA hit a breakthrough with the creation of the T-001, T-002 and T-011 prototypes. A clone was made of the T-002 to be further modified elsewhere as the Arklay Laboratory experienced a biohazard. The modified T-002 clone embryo ultimately gave rise to the T-103s, with human-level intelligence able to follow complex orders without the need of an on-site trainer. How many T-103s Umbrella was able to sell to its customers is unknown, if they sold any at all, as the 1998 Raccoon City Destruction Incident effectively barred Umbrella from trading with the US military.
With Umbrella in danger of collapse following the loss of all trade to the US and being at risk of bankruptcy in the Raccoon Trials, Umbrella abandoned its development of reliable weaponry in favor of mass-producing existing prototypes to be sold to terrorist groups and crime syndicates, who had less interest in the ability to control them. The Caucasus Laboratory this production was focused in fell to a t-Virus outbreak in February 2003, ending Umbrella's B.O.W. projects.
War on Terror Umbrella's collapse led to an increase in terrorist groups switching from conventional weapons to B.O.W.s, contributed by both former Umbrella employees selling merchandise onto the black market, and Dr. Albert Wesker's use of Umbrella's research files to his advantage. The existence of B.O.W.s, which had been covered-up globally for years, was finally revealed to the public in 2004 with the Terragrigia Panic, where modified Hunters were set loose on a city by Il Veltro, a radicalized fraternal group. Awareness of bio-weaponry exploded its use by terrorists, and some states like the Republic of Bajirib outright supported their acquisition as military weapons.[8] In the aftermath of Umbrella's collapse, research on bioweapons was led by Tricell, The Family, Los Iluminados, Dr. Alex Wesker and The Connections.
The Family, an American-based fraternal group, began the C-Virus Project not long after Raccoon City's destruction, aimed at creating a highly-destructive military virus for the US military, believing the American ban on bio-weapons research to only be temporary. The project used genes taken from t-Veronica and the G-Virus obtained by the US government, with the approach of creating intelligent mutant humans with arthropod characteristics able to undergo V-ACT. When exposed to a corpse, the virus also had the ability to repair cells and revivify them. A number of strains were created to cause specific mutations in those infected by injection. The Family's research was partly taken over by "Neo Umbrella", a rogue group led by Dr. Carla Radames, who sought to use their research to destroy the world rather than use them as weapons. Neo Umbrella was shut down in June 2013 with the death of Dr. Radames in China and destruction of her ultimate bio-weapon, HAOS.
Los Iluminados performed significant research on Las Plagas, a naturally occurring organism found in Spain which could induce mutations and hive mind characteristics upon humans. Through the guise of a cult, Los Iluminados' founder Osmund Saddler, styled as a Prophet, was able to recruit Plaga test subjects under his control, resulting in the creation of mutants such as Novistadores, El Gigante, Verdugo, U-3, and the Regeneradores. An operation by US-STRATCOM was almost successful in wiping out the organization in 2004, though Los Iluminados' genetically-modified parasites and cult members survived.
- #6Progenitor Virusselective
Keys: Progenitor Virus
The Progenitor virus is a family of RNA viruses. Progenitor is immensely ancient and is suspected of being hundreds of millions, if not billions of years old. It is considered to have both aided and hindered the evolution of Earth's ecology through the extremities of its resulting mutations.
While otherwise behaving as a typical Group VI virus in the Baltimore classification, Progenitor is distinct from all other viruses by being able to reverse lysis in cells and revive organisms dead for considerable lengths of time. Whereas other retroviruses, such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus, target particular cells of a particular animal's body, Progenitor is capable of infecting the cells of any organism, whether animal, fungal, plant, or bacterial.
Considerable research on Progenitor has been undertaken since its discovery in the late 1960s, and a number of engineered strains have since come into existence primarily for bioweapons research.

The overall idea was to form a team combining tactically-sound soldiers with scientists, allowing the team to operate in both anti-terrorism and increasingly-potent urban crime scenarios, as well as dealing with other emergencies.
- #9Prototype Virusselective
Keys: Prototype Virus
The Prototype strain was developed for use in "Project W," advanced by Umbrella founder Oswell E. Spencer as part of a special screening process for identifying the most genetically gifted of the Wesker children. Only two of the thirteen remaining test subjects survived: Albert Wesker and Alex Wesker. They survived largely due to special genetic markers.
Albert had injected the virus on July 24, 1998, during the Mansion Incident. William Birkin had given him the virus. This allowed him to survive impalement from the T-002 and to escape the Spencer Mansion before the Triggering System had detonated, unbeknownst to Umbrella and the remaining S.T.A.R.S. members. The power gained from the virus allowed Albert to become a global threat.

Keys: Raccoon City
Raccoon City was a small, industrialized city located in Arklay County, an isolated mountain county in the Midwestern United States. It was destroyed during the T-Virus outbreak in 1998. At present, the area is cordoned off to the rest of the world by a U.S. government facility.

Keys: Umbrella Executive Training School, Umbrella School, Umbrella Training School
The Umbrella Executive Training School is a boarding school and laboratory complex located in the Arklay Mountains at least eight miles north of Raccoon City. It was one of the original sites owned by Umbrella Pharmaceuticals where the t-Virus Project was being worked on. Closed to students in 1978 following a series of illegal human experiments covered up by Umbrella HQ, the surface complex was left to ruin with research continued only by Dr. James Marcus in an underground laboratory for the remaining ten years. A 1998 attempt to refurbish the facility ended when the entire team was infected or killed by mutant leeches, and the facility was soon after destroyed to contain the outbreak as well as continue to cover-up its dark secrets.
- #16Cerberus, MA-39selective
Keys: Cerberus
The Cerberus was an early attempt at creating a controllable Bio Organic Weapon by Umbrella USA, in a project led by the Arklay Laboratory.
The Cerberus Project began in the early 1980s as the β strain was developed. It was hoped that the improved t-Virus strain would create mutants more adequate for sale as military products, and dobermans were specifically selected for the project due to their traits favouring military service. Though they suffered skin deterioration, their muscles were left largely intact, and this and their increased strength and aggression made them more dangerous. As this B.O.W. species was created from an existing animal, unlike the Hunter Program, the cost to create the Cerberus prototypes was low. Deemed a success, the later Cerberuses were created by cloning one of the prototypes. The Arklay Laboratory conducted testing on these dogs in the courtyard until the t-Virus outbreak in 1998 when they escaped. Hungry and lacking their Umbrella trainers, they turned feral and began killing and eating hikers out in the Arklay Mountains.
When exposed to the β strain, one of the Doberman test subjects experienced a dramatic increase in strength and fighting instincts. The subject also lost the ability to be afraid, making it unperturbed by loud noises such as gunshots. In keeping with a dog's inherently sociable nature, the test subject was able to be trained to follow basic orders. This test subject was subsequently cloned to ensure all Cerberuses had the same advantages.
- #17Tyrant Virusselective
Keys: T-virus, Tyrant Virus
Tyrant Virus, also known as the t-Virus, is the general name given to a series of mutant Progenitor virus strains.
Initially developed by Umbrella Pharmaceuticals in the late 1960s, the primary goal of the "t-Virus Project" was to effectively eliminate the need for a large-scale conventional army and generate revenue for their eugenics program, the Wesker Project. This required two things: the virus had to be highly contagious to the point of infecting an entire target population and guarantee a 100% mortality rate. However, such a virus was deemed impossible due to the tendency of highly contagious diseases to kill too many people at once and prevent further spread.
Like any other virus, t-Viruses make contact with a cell's membrane and insert their genetic coding into the cell. The viral genome is absorbed into the cell, hijacking its intended functions and using them to produce virions similar to the original virus. The newly formed virions are then released from the host cell and infect neighboring cells, initiating the process once again.
Several diseases have been associated with t-Virus infection. The first, tentatively referred to as "Progenitor disease," is a fatal viral illness caused by Progenitor and early t-Virus strains. The exact mechanism of this disease is unknown, including whether it triggers a cytokine storm or rapidly mutates the patient until death. However, the most common disease caused by t-Viruses is Cannibal Disease, a condition in which patients mutate to gain enhanced survival capabilities at the cost of brain damage and homicidal urges. Advanced-stage Cannibal Disease patients are referred to as "Zombies," while pre-symptomatic and early-symptomatic cases can be treated with antiretroviral drugs.

Keys: Hunter
"Hunters" are a group of human-animal hybrids which were genetically engineered as biological weapons. Hunter species were created through the grafting of reptilian donor DNA to a fertilized human embryo with the aid of the t-Virus as a bonding agent, with the exception of the Hunter γ, which reversed the process with human DNA grafted into the genome of fertilized amphibian spawn. The Hunters were one of Umbrella's more successful products and among their oldest, having entered production with the Hunter α in the 1980s. Following Umbrella's demise, other bio-weapon manufacturers used the research data to create new Hunter species, with the Farfarello being among the latest iterations.

Excella Gionne is a British-Italian businesswoman. She is known for her leadership of Tricell, Inc., Africa and her involvement in Tricell's bio-weapons program. Excella Gionne was born into the Gionnes, a dynasty of wealthy Italian merchants. Through a grandmother, she was also closely related to the British Travis family, who had founded Tricell in the years before her birth. Academically impressive, Gionne was elevated to university education at a young age, and graduated with a BSc majoring in genetic engineering.
- #20Golgotha Virusselective
Keys: Golgotha Virus, G-virus
The Golgotha Virus, abbreviated as G-Virus, is a retrovirus in the Progenitor family of viruses. Golgotha was developed by william birkin of Umbrella USA as a bioweapon to rival and surpass the Tyrant Virus. The two viruses, while being descended from Progenitor, are totally dissimilar. Whereas the t-Virus typically causes relatively minor mutations in human hosts, such as Zombies and Tyrants, Golgotha causes such extreme genetic mutations that victims are no longer recognizable as human. Human t-Virus mutants are almost unanimously infertile, while Golgotha's "G" mutants are highly fertile and capable of asexual reproduction. The t-Virus causes necrosis of the body as a side-effect, while Golgotha is capable of repairing dead cells and even reviving the dead. Because of these factors, Golgotha is regarded as one of the greatest threats to the planet if an outbreak were to occur.
Golgotha has extreme effects on the human body. The virus infects cells close by, turning them into so-called "G-Cells." These G-Cells then produce more of the virus, which spreads further across the body. As this gradual spread starts from the point of infection, the body may mutate asymmetrically.
Golgotha's extreme mutations are not stopped simply from the creation of G-Cells. If part of the body is injured, it will regenerate, ultimately causing the host's DNA to be rewritten, leading to significant changes in the body during the regeneration. In the case of Dr. Birkin, he grew an entirely new, functional head, with his original head being moved down to the chest and eventually disappearing entirely.[14] Other noticeable aspects of the extreme mutations were the growth of a second pair of arms, which later mutated further into feet, and the reshaping of the rib cage into a mouth with bone teeth. With each physical trauma he received, Birkin's mutations grew more and more severe, until his form could no longer be recognized as human.
- #21Uroboros Virusselective
Keys: Uroboros Virus, Uroboros
Uroboros is an RNA virus in the Progenitor family. It was engineered in the 21st century by Dr. Albert Wesker as the ultimate eugenics tool. Currently, there is no known vaccine for either strain of Uroboros. The virus is named after the Ouroboros in Greek mythology, which is a snake or snake-like creature that consumed itself.
Comparable to the Progenitor virus, the Uroboros disease is noted to be almost always lethal in humans, with the exception of those with a particular genetic trait shared with the Ndipaya King. The disease goes through two stages, which can be defined as early and later symptomatic stages.
In the early symptomatic stage, patients are known to experience sweating, labored breathing, and confusion or delirium. The Uroboros Project research team noted in their findings that the onset of symptoms appeared immediately after infection. However, it should be noted that patients in the lab trial were each infected with massive viral loads, equating to one vial for people over 60 kg and two-thirds for those at 40–60 kg.
In the later stage of infection, the patient's condition will develop in one of two ways. If the patient has the advantageous genetic trait, the virus will enter a lysogenic stage and mutate the host at a slow rate. Patients without this trait, however, will experience runaway mutations that result in the patient being violently torn apart and killed. The infected biomatter continues to endure as its own separate entity, known only as "Uroboros".
Like the Progenitor and Golgotha viruses, Uroboros is able to repair dead cells and revive the dead, which results in Zombies who demonstrate neither superhuman abilities nor become typical Uroboros. The extent of Tricell's research into Uroboros Zombies is limited, however, and should be noted.
From a biological standpoint, Uroboros creatures can be described as anomalous masses of black biomatter. This mass often has tubular characteristics, echoing its namesake, though rather than resembling a snake, these creatures' tubules branch off from one another like tree roots, and can be melded back into the mass to grow elsewhere. When an Uroboros creature makes contact with other organisms, it consumes and converts them into biomatter for its own growth.
- #22Tyrantselective
Keys: Tyrant
A Tyrant is a human bio-weapon created through either a primary t-Virus infection to create a weapon, or the cloning of such specimens, with the intent to be used as super soldiers on the battlefield. Umbrella USA pioneered research on human mutants from 1988 to 1998 in their Tyrant Project, named after the virus itself. Tyrants are distinguished from the typical human mutant, Zombies, by possessing certain genes relating to intelligence. Tyrants were intended to be the "ultimate bio-weapon" for military use due to this intelligence. Ultimately, specimens and research outlived Umbrella itself.
The Tyrant Project's experiment outlines ultimately produced two main varieties of Tyrant to serve as B.O.W. products – the 'infiltration type' and 'combat type', respectively. The role of the infiltration-type is to blend in with a population centre to take part in covert operations, and are typically given heavy clothing to aide this; they are generally the more human in appearance. Combat types meanwhile are intended for battle, and are typically taller and deformed, and are often naked.
As a typical effect of t-Virus infection, Tyrants experience increased production of Human Growth Hormone, though this hormone is produced at greater quantities than that of Zombies. While the shortest of Tyrants, the T-103 series, were close to 7 feet in height, a later Tyrant series produced by a third party was pushing 12 feet in height.
Tyrants are also noted for their impressive physical abilities, being capable of jumping several storeys, bursting through concrete, flipping over tanks, and even redirecting rockets. Combat-type Tyrants experience extended arm growth resulting in a claw on at least one arm – muscle strength in the Tyrants is powerful enough human beings can be impaled and held up by these claws. Being developed for covert ops, infiltration types like the T-103 do not have claws unless the power limiter has been disabled.
- #23Tricellselective
Keys: Tricell
Tricell is a multi-industrial conglomerate, prominent in the Federation of Pharmaceutical Companies. It was a conglomerate of three organizations descended from Travis Enterprises. Its name was derived from the triumvirate of "cells" that formed it.
The three portions that make up Tricell up are the Pharmauceutical, Natural Resources and Shipping sectors.
The company was one of the more prominent members of the Federation of Pharmaceutical Companies along with companies such as the Umbrella Corporation. Eventually, Umbrella would prove to be too troublesome to the Federation, heavily involved in the business of Bio Organic Weapons. This practice would eventually prove to be the undoing of the company.
Wesker agreed to provide Tricell with the viral samples of the Tyrant virus and the T-Veronica virus for research in exchange for capital to add to his accumulated resources which are salvaged from Umbrella which he initially intended to replace.

Keys: Arklay Mountains
The Arklay Mountains is a Midwestern American mountain range situated mostly or entirely within Arklay County. The Arklay Mountains are themselves part of the wider Raccoon Forest region, and until the 1998 viral outbreak was a major tourist attraction for the state.
Location and Ecology Located on the outskirts of Raccoon City, the Arklay Mountains faced heavy traffic from the notorious Umbrella Corporation, who maintained several large facilities in the region, including the Arklay Laboratory, Birkin's laboratory and the Umbrella Executive Training School.
The Arklay Mountains are situated northwest of Raccoon City and are a popular hiking and camping destination frequented regularly by Raccoon's nature-loving populace as well as the tourists to the area. Most of the Arklay region is unused and is almost completely covered with heavy vegetation.
The Arklay Mountains are classified as temperate hardwood forest, with the region being dominated by Pine trees, Maple trees, Oak trees and other native plant life such as Raccoon City's signature colored herbs. The herbs were first discovered in the Arklay region and are often used for medicinal purposes both locally and abroad. The Arklay Mountains are well known throughout the medical community, with the Green, Blue and Red herbs having revolutionized the healthcare industry and garnered massive profits for pharmaceutical companies (including, but not limited to, the Umbrella Corporation). Each herb has its own unique medicinal value and have no known side effects associated with their use. They can be mixed together and converted into capsule or powder form to achieve different curative effects. The herbs can be found in many areas of Raccoon City, including several of the city's key public buildings, such as Raccoon Police Station. The citizens of Raccoon City have also been known to keep the herbs in their houses and places of employment for decoration or use.
- #25Rival Companyselective
Keys: The Rival Company, the organization
The Rival Company also known as the organization, was a developer of illegal bioweapons and was a major rival to the Umbrella Corporation in the 1990s and 2000s. This organization aggressively competed with Umbrella from 1998 to 2003 and, through the use of spies, turncoats and its paramilitary wing, H.C.F., was able to dismantle Umbrella's operation and take its place in the market prior to its 2003 bankruptcy.
The organization was shown to have advanced technology and lots of resources - financial, political, and otherwise - at their disposal, and had an effective free-reign in their area of society. The organization made repeated attempts to cripple or damage Umbrella's key operations and facilities, knowing that these acts of sabotage could eventually dismantle Umbrella's influence and power.
By 1998 the rival company was successful in placing a spy in Umbrella's ranks. Their agent, a Chinese woman calling herself Ada Wong, was transferred to the Arklay Laboratory, which included top-secret research projects unknown even to other B.O.W. development teams. While there, Wong became romantically involved with the facility's chief researcher, John Clemens, using their relationship as a means of gaining information. During her time at the facility, a saboteur released Epsilon into the water supply in May 1998. The facility soon fell into anarchy with cannibalistic murders and animal attacks becoming commonplace, and Wong was forced to abandon the mission empty-handed. In July, the company was successful in opening a dialogue with Dr. Albert Wesker, an Umbrella executive responsible for security in the Raccoon City facilities. Wesker had received orders from Umbrella to lead a special forces team into the laboratory and recover sensitive research data and embryonic clone samples, but instead planned to fake his death and hand the material over to the organisation in exchange for a senior position. The operation, dubbed X-Day by Umbrella, was a failure for both sides, with both factions failing to recover the embryos and Wesker's login code being rescinded from the computer. Forced to escape the mansion empty-handed, Wesker chose to continue his service with the organisation using his own experience as the bargaining chip instead.
Later in 1998, the organisation shifted its interested instead towards NEST and research conducted by Dr. William Birkin. Having worked with Birkin for years, Wesker was well aware of the G-Virus Project and Birkin's own plans to abandon Umbrella and work for the Pentagon. Several agents were placed within Raccoon City, including Wong and "the liaison", and began spying on Umbrella to recover any information of value, with Wong making contact with investigative reporter Ben Bertolucci, who had already come to the city with the intention of spying on Umbrella after news of the Cannibal Disease spread. The second phase of the operation was the infiltration of NEST itself using its secret underground transport tunnel, wherein Wong was to recover Birkin, his wife and the G-Virus research data. This operation however was hit by a number of setbacks; on the night of 22 September, Birkin was shot while resisting arrest by the Umbrella Security Service and his research recovered. Following an intense fight on 23 September, most G-Virus samples were lost, and Epsilon found its way into the city's water supply, causing cases of Cannibal Disease to spike. With the arrest of Bertolucci by the corrupt Raccoon Police Department on 24 September, the mission was at risk of collapse though its agents were not evacuated.
By 29 September, the mission had changed radically; aware of the Birkin shooting, the mission parameters were modified and Wong received orders to capture his daughter, Sherry, who was known to carry a locket containing a sample of the virus and was likely in hiding. How far she searched for Sherry is unknown, though Wong chose instead to make plans to infiltrate NEST and recover a G-Virus sample from it. Arriving at the Raccoon Police Station first, she spoke with Bertolucci, who was unable to provide any more useful information and was killed soon after. With the help of a surviving RPD officer, Leon S. Kennedy, Wong the two made their way into the sewers and headed towards NEST by its underground transport terminal. The situation in NEST was found to be chaotic; not only had it fallen to a t-Virus outbreak, but the hunt for G-Virus had escalated matters further. William himself had lost all sense of humanity and could not be reasoned with, while his wife Dr. Annette Birkin was uncooperative and identified Wong as a spy sent to recover the virus; their daughter Sherry meanwhile was awaiting emergency treatment after being impregnated with a G-embryo and had lost her locket, which a Tyrant had also entered NEST with orders to recover. The extreme situation proved to be the mission's undoing, with Kennedy throwing away the locket in an attempt to deny its recovery to anyone; severely injured and with NEST's self-destruct system activated, Wong was unable to recover the locket and instead escaped with a skin tissue sample shed by Birkin.
Throughout 30 September, contact was lost with Wong and the mission was determined by Wesker to be a complete failure and the agents were left to their fate once more, with the Liaison killing himself to avoid infection. Wong was ultimately able to regain contact with Wesker and, in exchange for the tissue sample, was given information on a helicopter being flown out of the city carrying UBCS leader Sergei Vladimir. Wong was ultimately successful and escaped the city on a crate being carried by the helicopter.
Rockfort Island All the previous events were recorded by Wesker and noted in Wesker's Report. The next desired virus the organization targeted was the t-Veronica virus, created by Alexia Ashford. Wesker was sent to secure a sample of it from Rockfort Island, the location of one of Umbrella's bases. Leading the company's paramilitary deployment, H.C.F., Wesker openly attacked the Umbrella facility, causing the t-Virus samples on the island to escape and contaminate all remaining personnel, turning them into zombies.
Wesker continued his activity after this, making use of his superhuman powers to maneuver around the area. He would soon reveal himself to Claire Redfield and her brother Chris Redfield, Wesker's former S.T.A.R.S. comrade and hated nemesis. Wesker despised Chris because he had ruined his plans months ago in the mansion and wanted revenge, also taking out some of his hatred on Claire.
Wesker and his men later had to instead go to Antarctica, where Alexia and her virus truly were in another Umbrella base. All the while, Wesker made repeated attempts to get a t-Veronica sample, but soon had to deal with the awakened Alexia. He demanded the t-Veronica sample from Alexia, who selfishly declared Wesker to be "unworthy" of the virus' power.
After a brief battle between them, Wesker left Chris to fight Alexia. Chris did so, but destroyed her, preventing Wesker from getting what seemed to be the only existing sample in her body.
However, Wesker was undaunted, and grabbed Claire as Chris pursued them. Outside the burning lab on a dock where a submarine was located, Chris demanded Wesker let his sister go. He complied, and pointed out that he no longer needed Alexia, since his men had recovered the body of Steve Burnside, who had been infected himself and contained a sample.
Chris told Claire to get to an airship inside the crumbling lab while he dealt with Wesker. Attempting to avenge his fallen comrades, Chris was no match for the superhuman Wesker and was nearly killed. He luckily managed to pin Wesker under several steel girders.
Undefeated, Wesker prepared to kill him, but was blocked by an explosion from the lab and scarred. Chris escaped, and Wesker, knowing he would have to wait until he met him again, laughed maniacally and left the destroyed island in the submarine. Wesker brought Steve's body to the organization, who recovered a sample of the t-Veronica virus from him.
The organization had gained combat data on various B.O.W.s as well as samples of the t-Virus; G-virus, and t-Veronica virus. All of this had given them an immense advantage over their competitor, Umbrella, which was slowly losing influence in the world. Albert Wesker, however, had plans of his own while working with the organization, and conducted secret activities behind the scenes. Wesker infiltrated Umbrella's final stronghold in the Caucasus in Russia.
Sergei Vladimir was planning to use the ultimate B.O.W., T-A.L.O.S., and the Red Queen to ensure Umbrella's survival at the request of Oswell E. Spencer, who was in hiding. Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine also went to the base in hopes of destroying Umbrella once and for all. Wesker personally raided the facility, fighting past every B.O.W. and t-Virus infected scientist in the lab and found Sergei. Defeating and killing him after he mutated, Wesker cleared out the U.M.F.-013 computer core.
The Umbrella Archives, the summation of the entire company, were put on a single disc for Wesker, and he shut down the Red Queen. Wesker proved instrumental in bringing Umbrella down, as he brought his findings into court and personally testified against Spencer. While the Umbrella CEO was hunted, the organization had succeeded in destroying their biggest opponent thanks to Albert Wesker. However, Wesker would keep the archives he recovered and took over all of Umbrella's assets, planning to establish a new Umbrella.
Sometime after 2002, Wesker was approached by rogue US Army veteran Jack Krauser, who had been discharged after an injury during the attempted arrest of crime lord Javier Hidalgo, a business partner of Wesker's. Having faked his own death, Krauser sought out Wesker after hearing about him from Leon S. Kennedy, wishing to become stronger with the power of the virus. He then became Wesker's loyal follower in the organization, which conducted numerous background checks on Krauser.
Following Umbrella's demise in 2003, Wesker contacted Tricell Inc, Africa member Excella Gionne and formed an alliance with her, giving her samples of the t-Virus and t-Veronica. With these and Wesker's backing, she became Director of Tricell's Africa division, which Wesker sought to use as a backup plan to realise his ambitions should the rival company betray him.
In 2004, Wesker recruited Ada Wong and Jack Krauser in the mission to retrieve samples of the Plaga from Los Iluminados, particularly the dominant species Plaga. While the mission was a success, the top brass of the organization had secretly ordered Ada to deliver them the dominant species, leaving Wesker merely with samples of the subordinate species. Unfazed by this foreseen betrayal, Wesker retrieved a sample from the corpse of Krauser.

The United States Strategic Command is one of nine Unified Combatant Commands within the United States Department of Defense. Formed in 1992 with representation of the US Army and Navy, it is responsible for tackling cyber attacks; missile defense and combating weapons of mass destruction, such as Bio Organic Weapons.
Immediately following the 1998 Raccoon City Destruction Incident, the Anti-Umbrella Pursuit and Investigation Team was founded as a subordinate to USSTRATCOM. It is known to have handled several instances of bioterrorism, at one point working alongside USSOCOM.
Further notes In the Castle build for Resident Evil 4, Leon S. Kennedy was to cooperate with USSTRATCOM in an assault against Umbrella at the Spencer Castle. Albert Wesker's HCF forces were to unleash a new bioweapon in the area, wiping out all but Leon. In reality, they are charged with space operations, information operations, missile defense, global command and control, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR), global strike and strategic deterrence (the United States nuclear arsenal), and combating weapons of mass destruction.

Keys: AUPI Team, Anti-Umbrella Pursuit and Investigation Team, Anti-Umbrella Team, USSTRATCOM
The Anti-Umbrella Pursuit and Investigation Team was a classified American military special operations unit within USSTRATCOM (United States Strategic Command). It was formed to take on the rising threat of bio-weapons, which the US Army at the time had no countermeasures for, as well as take down Umbrella.
The 1998 Raccoon City Destruction Incident exposed serious failings within the US Army in handling the threat of Progenitor-derived bioweaponry, with severe casualties being suffered by both the regular infantry sent in to rescue civilians and special operations units such as Delta Force who were sent in to recover high-priority assets. Following the hasty resignation of the President, the Pentagon began training a new special ops unit to tackle the threat posed by both B.O.W.s and their developers. Officially under the United States Strategic Command, then known more for its intelligence and missile strike and defence capabilities, but reporting directly and solely to the President. This unit's operations were classified to maintain the new President's decision to deny the existence of B.O.W.s, something carried over for several years into the subsequent Graham Administration.
In 2002, USSTRATCOM worked with a branch of USSOCOM in an investigation of South American drug lord Javier Hidalgo, who was linked to black market bio-weapons dealings. Hidalgo was eliminated, and it was confirmed the bio-weapons dealer had already been killed. In September 2002 USSTRATCOM was sent out to the Atlantic Ocean to infiltrate the Spencer Rain, an Umbrella-owned cruise ship which had been stolen by bioterrorist Morpheus D. Duvall. The agent, Bruce McGivern, followed Duvall to a missile silo in which t-Virus warheads were installed. The silo and its missiles were successfully destroyed.
The unit was organized in USSTRATCOM under the direct control of the U.S. president. While its principal directive was Anti-Virus Weapon Protocol No. 7600, the agency handles any duties mandated by the President, with agent Kennedy also given a supplemental assignment of protecting the immediate family of President-elect Graham, a duty shared with the Secret Service, following the fall of Umbrella.

Keys: United States Special Operations Command, USSOCOM, Special Operations Command
The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) is the Unified Combatant Command charged with overseeing the various Special Operations Commands (SOC or SOCOM) of the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps of the United States Armed Forces. The command is part of the Department of Defense. USSOCOM is headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. Jack Krauser is known to have represented one of the special operations teams within USSOCOM, though it is left unstated as to which.
Purpose: USSOCOM conducts several covert and clandestine missions, such as unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, psychological operations, Civil Affairs, direct action, counter-terrorism and War on Drugs operations. USSOCOM's global performance in combat and noncombat areas has proven the value of a mature, culturally attuned, properly equipped, and adaptive Special Operations Force (SOF). Each branch has a Special Operations Command that is unique and capable of running its own operations, but when the different Special Operations Forces need to work together for an operation, USSOCOM becomes the joint component command of the operation, instead of a SOC of a specific branch.
Subunits: USSOCOM is divided into several individual commands:
- Army Special Operations Command, based at Fort Bragg, is responsible for entirely Army matters. Along with its five regiment-strong Army Special Forces is the independent 75th Ranger Regiment.
- Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), based at Fort Bragg, is responsible for multi-branch missions. Delta Force is among its units.
- Naval Special Warfare Command, based in Coronado, handles all SEAL teams (with the exception of Team Six, which is part of JSOC).
- Marine Corps Special Operations Command is entirely distinct from NavSpecWarCom, and is based at Camp Lejuene.
- Airforce Special Operations Command, based in Hurlburt Field.

Keys: El Gigante, The giant
El Gigante (lt. "The Giant" in Spanish) is the name of a group of human-based Bio Organic Weapons produced by Los Iluminados. They stand four times taller than the average human and have increased strength and durability. However, their intelligence and thus their controllability was greatly reduced, resulting in their minimal production.
History El Gigante was first produced from human test subjects during Los Iluminados experiments on the mutational effects of the Plagas on their hosts. Though they proved to be exceptional as bio-weapons, they became difficult to control and were a danger to the Ganados. Consequently, Los Iluminados produced only a small number of El Gigante, spreading them around the region. Two were sent to the Salazar Castle, where they guarded the underground. Another two were sent to the village and stored within the coal mines that the Ganados no longer had use for. These Gigantes were released from their containment in 2004 when U.S. agent Leon S. Kennedy proved too strong for the Ganados. Ada Wong encountered one of these villages' El Gigante.

Valdelobos (English: "Valley of Wolves") is a mountainous region of Spain. Valdelobos has culturally been isolated from the rest of Spain, being the centre of a pre-Roman city state and the home of Los Iluminados, a primal religion which survived Reconquista.
In the 20th century the region was populated by a strict Catholic and feudal society centred around a cluster of hamlets near Salazar Castle, with the economy primarily being built around farming and coal mining and maintaining a self-sufficient culture which shunned modern technologies when not needed. Around the Millennium, the region saw a radical shift in favour of Los Iluminados worship which resulted in the wholesale slaughter of Catholics and outsiders travelling through the mountains, with their actions being enough to attract attention from the Spanish government.
Following the 2004 discovery of bioweapons research in Valdelobos, Spanish authorities established a quarantine zone forbidding further travel in and out.
History: Since ancient times, Valdelobos was under the control of a contemporaneously technologically-advanced society who built-up a large city in the region's vast caverns. What became of this society is uncertain, though a pagan cult known as Los Iluminados had emerged in the Medieval Period which worshipped the Plagas, a species of parasitic organism capable of influencing the mind of the host. In the late 15th century, the region was subject to an intense crusade spearheaded by Salazar, a prominent nobleman who went on to rule over the village from a castle.
Persecution of Los Iluminados followers was extreme; victims were known to be formed into a line and executed by the sword, or impaled on stakes and their bodies burned. The surviving Plaga parasites were confined within the caverns; apocryphal sources suggest Del Lago was alive at this time and was sealed within an underwater cave in the lake. Survivors of the cult remained in the region in secret; having formerly worshipped openly in a church, a makeshift shrine was fashioned in a cave system to the south of the lake, to be entered behind a waterfall. At least one castle was constructed above the ruins of the ancient kingdom, from where Salazar was able to deny the survivors access to the Plagas. A similar fort was built on a nearby island where the cult had also existed.
Over the following centuries, Salazar's descendants continued to oversee and enforce matters in the region as feudal lords and castellans. While Spain's political and technological climate changed radically over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the region itself remained a time capsule, being in any case a remnant of the Spanish Old Regime. Possibly holding isolationist values, successive generations continued as though in a late 18th century mode of living, only using modern technologies such as trucks when it was essential for maintaining their otherwise self-sufficient community.
Los Iluminados revival: By the end of the 20th century, the region fell under the control of the Ramón Salazar. Having inherited his titles as a child, Salazar was unprepared for the responsibilities expected of his family. While the villagers mythologised the deeds of their first lord, the eighth was despised. Salazar, himself cut-off from the world, became the target of Prophet Osmund Saddler, who claimed to be the spiritual leader of Los Iluminados. After welcoming him into the castle, Salazar was easily manipulated into apostacy, renouncing his Catholic faith in favour of Los Iluminados. To atone for his family's sins, he ordered the caverns beneath the castle be opened once more, described only as an excavation project to the villagers recruited as miners. A team of geneticists led by Saddler examined the mummified remains in search of surviving fragmentary DNA to allow cloning. Several years following the initial dig, the miners began suffering from an illness defined by painful seizures. Upon closer analysis it was discovered they had inhaled live spores, which regenerated complete Plagas within their chests.
As research continued, the Plagas were introduced to the wider population through proselytism. On the first Mass after the harvest festival, Fr. Bitores Méndez introduced the villagers to Saddler, who's charismatic persona charmed them just the same. Over the following days or weeks, the converts submitted themselves to a baptismal ceremony where they were injected with a Plaga egg under the guise of their blood being purified of sin. Others were compelled to do so by loved ones who had already taken part in the ritual. Perhaps for those who refused totally, the village's abattoir became an execution ground for traitors. Some may have fled the region entirely. In each case, within days the baptised suffered severe chest pains resulting in hematemesis, and in all cases the children suffered severe nerve damage resulting in violent seizures before death. There is reason to believe there was violence committed by villagers who had suffered side-effects of parasitisation, though this is not conclusive. Following the proselytising, the villagers, now Ganados, were compelled to follow orders by Saddler and his lieutenants - to kill outsiders.
By 2004, the cult and its Plagas had become exposed to a limited degree to various organisations, placing attention onto the village. The Spanish government was aware at least that Los Iluminados was in control of the village, though may not have known of the murders committed by its followers. Following a leak by senior research Dr. Luis Serra, the "rival company" and Tricell were made aware of the Plagas and made plans to send in agents to retrieve samples. In the Autumn of that year Los Iluminados took part in the abduction of Ashley Graham, daughter of President Graham. She was smuggled into the village with the intent on baptising her and planting her with multiple eggs so that when inevitably rescued she would be able to parasitise influential congressmen, senior military officials, judges and company CEOs. The intervention of the US government in tandem with the bio-weapons developers was not anticipated, and the villagers suffered heavy casualties as armed assailants attacked from different locations. As night fell, the survivors rallied to Salazar Castle where they tried and failed to halt the escape of Kennedy and Graham.
Following the successful evacuation of Graham from the region, the Spanish authorities were made aware of the situation. Though the subsequent involvement of the Spanish Army lead to the annihilation of the Ganados, they failed to eradicate the Plagas and instead placed the mountains under quarantine. How strict this quarantine zone was guarded is uncertain, and there are a number of reports of former residents illegally entering the zone intent on recovering their homes. Many of these people were subsequently found to have been parasitised and, until the illegal raid on the village by Umbrella Corps in May 2012, allowed to live out their lives in isolation.
Geography
Riverside: The western footpath to the village begins just after a river crossing against don Jose's isolated premises. It goes downwards into a small valleyside where another river runs through on a dissimilar path. There are two sheds along this route, one of which was where a local villager was killed and left hanging inside. This area was booby-trapped with tripmines and bear traps.
Village centre: The centre of Valdelobos itself features homesteads, a Farm compound, a Church with a cemetery, and a tall bell tower within the community itself. There appear to be several fortified Ganados encampments located near the village while an underground bunker complex has also been occupied and used to store weapons and equipment. Most villagers live in the village, although a few villagers tend to live further away from the main, central area of town. For example, the first house in the game seems to be closer to the border of the village, requiring a villager to take a path to the village and the outlying areas. An unseen villager also lives in a house next to the lake, when Leon kills Del Lago he passes out in this persons house. There is also an abandoned cabin across the bridge near the farm where Leon, Ashley Graham and Luis Serra take refuge in during a villager mob attack.
Old village: This path is beyond the farm, where a long curved hill leads downward to a tunnel with a bridge above (the bridge for the Northern path). On the other side lies a yard with tipmines and bear traps, and a lot of trees. The yard contains a run-down shed, a small house with a tightly nailed door and finally a large house, riddled with tripmines and at the end of the house is a room with a few cabinets and a closet where Luis Serra is being held captive prior to Leon's arrival.
Valley: The southern path leading away from the village leads to the homestead of Bitores Méndez, the village chief. An exit leading out of his bedroom in the rear leads to an underground corridor at the bottom of a well. The corridor eventually opens out in another valley, which was being used as a prisoner compound for Leon and Luis.
Lakeside: This easterly path is taken by traversing an underground passage from a small building in the village centre. It surfaces in the Church cemetery, where a short walk uphill and past the church goes much further. A walkway against a cliffhedge overlooking a large lake leads travellers easterly towards a flat, rocky plain with high wooden fencing blocking off the drop down the cliff. A mine against the upper-cliff was used for hiding away an "El Gigante" until its release was ordered. After this area is a shallow marshland with a raised, wooden walkway going down the rest of the area. After this is the shoreline of a smaller lake that feeds the larger lake below. Going south via the lake and down a cliffedge, a complicated machine for changing the distribution of the river water can be used to reveal an underground passage through the cliffs. This passage leads to another, underground lake where a boat can be taken back to where El Gigante is released.
Towards the castle: This path is north of the farm and where a bridge leads across to a cabin (as mentioned above). Followed by two routes, one is a compound where two towers are seen and it features an arena where Leon runs into the Chainsaw Sisters. Beyond that door is a compound with a basement in which a path is caved in, ahead lies the two towers and a pair of red double doors at the end. The other route, is a lengthy path leading to a pair of green double doors. An El Gigante is seen there.
Afterwards, there is a porch near the latter of the two routes and a shed. Beyond there lies the gate leading from the village to Salazar Castle. To open it, one needs to use a False Eye possessed by the village chief. North of there is a lift that leads to a tunnel which at the end of it is a Yellow Catseye, a control room for the lift is also present next to the lift. Down the stairs leads to a gate, beyond it is a warehouse that possesses several supplies and it is the stage to fight the Village chief.

The slaughterhouse is an area of Valdelobos. This is where Leon S. Kennedy fights the village chief, Bitores Méndez. The slaughterhouse is also referred to as the "torture shed" in the BradyGames guide. It is located near Salazar Castle, it can only be reached by taking gondola lifts.
Description Inside the abandoned slaughterhouse, there are crates, hooks, chains, ladders and an oil barrel which Leon initially uses for trying to kill Méndez by burning him. The slaughterhouse is mentioned in a file written by Méndez—Village's Last Defense, where Chief says it's a "building used to enlighten betrayers". When Leon succeeds in eliminating Méndez, he takes his False Eye to open the gate that leads out of the village. After that, a wall burns out, which is the only way to exit since Méndez has twisted the bars on the main door of the slaughterhouse.
TMP ammo can be recovered on the lower-left corner of the map, with Handgun Ammo on the opposite side. A spinel can be a found when destroying a barrel nearer to the other side of the room, along with Shotgun Shells and a Green Herb on the floor by a ladder.
On the upper level, a Red Herb, Yellow Herb, and a Green Herb can be found on the walls in cabinets. More handgun ammo can be recovered from the upper-left corner of the room. A Hand Grenade can be found next to it.

One of the sisters confronted Ada Wong on her search for a way into the Church. A second sister confronted her near the caves on the other side of the valley. Two other sisters joined in a camp where they attacked Leon S. Kennedy. However, Leon managed to kill them both.
The Chainsaw Sisters are much like the Chainsaw Men having very high health, flinch resistance, and an attack that can instantly kill. However, the Chainsaw Sisters swing their chainsaws much faster than the men, making them even more dangerous
- #34Chainsaw Manselective
Keys: Chainsaw Man, Giant Chainsaw Man
The Chainsaw Man is a class of Chainsaw Ganado. This Ganado wears a burlap potato sack as a mask over his head. His female equivalents are the Chainsaw Sisters.
Appearance The Chainsaw Man is a burly, chainsaw-wielding villager with a burlap sack over his head while wearing typical farmer clothing in addition. He can be detected by the sound of a chainsaw revving nearby. Due to his size, sack mask and unique weapon, he is very easy to tell apart from regular villagers.
The Chainsaw Man retains much of his design in the remake, albeit his bloodcurdling eyes are more visible due to the holes of his potato sack being larger in comparison. He had more bloodstains on his clothes, presumably from previous fights and mutilation and has a notably slimmer physique than his original incarnation.
Biology Due to the Plaga parasite, the Chainsaw Man has been made exceptionally violent, and is compelled to relentlessly chase his enemies with his trademark chainsaw. Also due to the Plaga's assimilation, he has been made exceptionally robust in comparison to regular villagers and can absorb small arms fire with ease.
- #35The Giant Chainsaw Manselective
Keys: The Giant Chainsaw Man
Appearance The Giant Chainsaw Man appears similar to the other Chainsaw Men, but is actually significantly taller Over 7 feet (213 cm), and his clothes are dirtier and blood-stained. He is armed with a double-bladed chainsaw (which is actually a pair of chainsaws chained together) that has sparks and thick black smoke flying off the blades.
In the remake, the Giant Chainsaw Man retains much of his basic design such as his tall stature and double-blade chainsaw, which is now a single chainsaw with 2 blades. His sack mask is a white color along with black liquid around the holes of the mask. The Giant Chainsaw Man's eyes are also darker in comparison.
Gameplay Two Giant Chainsaw Men appear in Stage 4 and each are worth a base of 5,000 points when defeated. They will also usually drop First Aid Sprays. Although a unique enemy, they actually only have slightly more health than the regular Chainsaw Ganado. One can be spawned by acquiring thirty consecutive kills in the level, while the other is activated once the player triggers him or is the first to attack him.
Their only attack is entering a "Berserk" state where they wildly swing their chainsaw while approaching the player at surprising speed. Being hit by their attack results in an instant death and decapitation. While attacking, they move about as fast as the characters' walking speed unless their Berserk state is triggered.
They are extremely flinch-resistant, usually requiring multiple headshots to be staggered. While stunned, the player is not given melee prompts, though a melee on a nearby enemy can affect him as well. They can move extremely fast and can leap to the top of structures and roofs, although leaping up or dropping down to an area will make him stall for a few seconds to allow for some room. Though rare, it is possible for both to be present on the map and chasing the player simultaneously. The Giant Chainsaw Man uses the same sound effects as Gatling Man, and also has the same maniacal laughter, usually heard upon the player's death.
- #36Ganadoselective
Keys: Villagers, ganado
Ganado is the term given to a human victim of the Subordinate Plaga Species used by Los Iluminados. The word is derived from the Spanish word "ganado", which means "livestock" in general, but can refer to bovines in particular.
History" Until Reconquista, Ganados were only found in one particular region of Spain and were part of a pagan religion. These Ganados were slaughtered in a Crusade led by Gregorio Salazar, who sealed the surviving Plagas in underground caves. The Plagas escaped the caves in the early 21st century and turned a number of miners from the nearby village into Ganados. Through genetic-engineering of the parasite, the bio-weapons developer Los Iluminados was able to produce a new species, the Dominant Plagas, which would be under the control of its host and mutate them at will. The Ganados were of this latter variety.
Seeking to recruit the local population into a private army, Los Iluminados brainwashed the villagers to follow a neopagan religion, seeing its leader Osmund Saddler as a "Prophet". These villagers were injected with Plaga eggs which would take over their body, disguised as a baptismal ritual.[1] Now unwaveringly loyal to their Prophet, the Ganados received orders to kill trespassers on sight. The village Ganados protected their area armed with farming tools but using any mechanical skills to create explosives. Those which lived in Salazar's castle served as monks and were provided medieval weaponry. Those who served in the Prophet Saddler's army on his island were paramilitary militiamen armed with modern military-grade weapons. How many people were killed for the crime of trespass is uncertain, as a number of locals were also executed for various, unknown offenses. It is certain that two police officers from Madrid were killed by villagers.
Following the storming of the region by Leon S. Kennedy and Ada Wong, the Ganados faced severe losses, including that of all Dominant Plaga hosts. Though the Spanish government sealed off the area, displaced persons native to the region were parasitised again when they illegally returned to their homes. As late as a year after the Global Bioterrorists Attacks, Los Iluminados was still operational to an unknown degree, though it is uncertain if it was led by Ganados.
- #37Los Iluminadosselective
Keys: The cult, Osmund Saddler, Los Iluminados
Los Iluminados was a religious cult native from Valdelobos, Spain. Traditions place them as the continuation of an ancient primal religion and was likely related to a civilization that once thrived in the caverns beneath Salazar Castle, though no proven lineage has been found. Los Iluminados beliefs are syncretic in nature, drawing heavily from Roman Catholicism but incorporating human sacrificial ceremonies. The core value of Los Iluminados is the belief in Las plagas as a holy creature given to humanity by God, and parasitization of members is a traditional requirement for initiation.
Once a large community in Valdelobos, Los Iluminados saw repeated state-sanctioned inquisitions which reduced survivors to living in exile. Mass conversions took place in the 1990s under Prophet Osmund Saddler but have since been largely eradicated due to their ties to paramilitary violence in the region. Following a 2004 American-led operation to rescue Ashley Graham, Valdelobos has been sealed by the Spanish government, and surviving Los Iluminados members continued on in exile once more.
History
Precursors: Early archaeological evidence suggests Plaga worship has been practiced around Valdelobos since thousands of years ago, with cave art depicting a human sacrifice and accounts suggesting this ancient heritage.[2][excerpt 1] The ruins of a large city have also been found in the caverns beneath Salazar Castle, suggesting a further connection.
Fall into exile: Accounts differ as to the timing, though each agree that Los Iluminados was worshipped by many openly in Valdelobos until a series of government-sanctioned massacres were undertaken by Gregorio Salazar, 1st Count of Valdelobos to restore Catholic primacy in the region. In some accounts Los Iluminados existed in the region prior to Reconquista and suffered persecution from the late 15th century. Other accounts, however, place Los Iluminados as emerging post-Reconquista and being destroyed in the 18th century.[note 2] Assuming the latter, it emerged as a heretical Christian sect by 1554, as dated by an inscription from Prophet Adam Saddler,[3] and was destroyed in 1741 during the time of Prophet Hester Saddler.[4] The Salazar family committed themselves for centuries in preventing a re-emergence, while the descendants of Adam Saddler vowed to succeed.[2][5]
Revival: In the 1990s, Los Iluminados saw a revival under the leadership of Prophet Osmund Saddler. Accounts pertaining Saddler's background varied; one indicated him to be an outsider who revived the cult for his own ends while another confirmed him to be the legitimate heir of Adam Saddler who truly believed in Los Iluminados' faith. Regardless, Saddler changed the practices of Los Iluminados, seeking to use technology as a means of proselytism. Taking the guise of a healer, Saddler was able to make his way into Valdelobos on the offer of treating the infirm Ramón Salazar, 8th Count of Valdelobos. In exchange, Salazar grew up to idolize him and converted. In doing so, he ordered that the caverns beneath the castle be opened to allow Saddler access to the Plaga remains, whose DNA could be used for a cloning project.[6][7]
When Salazar released the seal to the underground ruins, the Plagas were found to have died long ago. However, in their desiccated remains lay spores which were still alive. These were confirmed to exist sometime later when several miners fell sick sometime after excavation began and were in a state of regenerating new, complete bodies. Using these Plagas, Saddler perfected the ability to reproduce the organism and took to implanting Plaga eggs into new hosts.[8]
The cult's followers were soon implanted with Plagas along with much of the local population who had joined the cult. Saddler himself was implanted with a Dominant species Plaga, and as such, had direct control over the others, using lieutenants with similarly augmented Plagas to monitor and direct the Ganados on the ground.
The villagers then returned to living as normally as they could, farming, attending cult services at the local church, acting as guards for Salazar's castle or working the mines while the cult zealots engaged in dark rituals and sacrifices in the name of Saddler by kidnapping people passing by the region and killing them. The animals from the farms also started becoming weaker and desiccated due to the decrease in the villagers' intelligence and hygiene causing them to be unable to properly care for them.[9]
The plan: Sometime before Autumn 2004, the disillusioned former U.S. Military Major Jack Krauser came across Los Iluminados during his quest in seeking out and obtaining "unadulterated power". His defection to the cult provided it the opportunity to spread its faith and Las Plagas to the rest of the world. It was Krauser who provided Los Iluminados with modern weaponry such as RPGs with specialized red warhead and overseeing both the fortification of the cult's island base not far from the main land and the construction of a a sophisticated antenna array for monitoring and intercepting the activities of hostile organizations, US intelligence services included. The last proved crucial in formulating the strategy to kidnap Ashley Graham, daughter of U.S. President Graham, so Los Iluminados able to both convert her into the cult's faith and infect her with her very own Plaga; and subsequently had her did the same to her father along with the United States' executive branch with main priority being those with influence over the President's decisions - Congress, the Department of Justice, military government agencies and large private companies. Krauser noted defenses he built on the island should hold up long enough for Los Iluminados to achive its ultimate goal of world domination. However, the plan was met with a series of complications not just due to intervention from USSTRATCOM Agent Leon S. Kennedy and Luis Sera's defection, but also the presence of a shady group who sought the Amber, a dormant naturally-occuring Dominant species Plaga, and sent one of its agents to seize it. Following Saddler's death at the hands of Leon Scott Kennedy, the infected Ganados on the island started dying from the parasites inside of them due to Saddler's master Plaga being killed and were all killed when the island was destroyed.
Alliance with Glenn Arias: The remnants of the Los Iluminados remained active in Spain for years following the 2004 raid, although they were greatly hindered by the death of Saddler and the condemnation of the wider world. The Spanish government enacted heavy sanctions, sending in a squad to exterminate those who were determined to have been carrying the parasite and imposed a quarantine against the Iluminados homestead due to the threat posed by wild Plaga, which continued to infect many of those who returned home.
While many of the Iluminados continued to live in relative peace under lockdown, being self-reliant and seldom disturbed by outsiders, a small devout sect chose instead to seek revenge against Kennedy and the United States government. Patricio, who had spent several years living in the United States as a mole for American intelligence organizations (such as the Division of Security Operations), was contacted by The Family in 2014. Having been under heavy scrutiny and investigation by Kennedy in the fallout of the 2012-2013 Global Bioterrorist Attacks, The Family provided Patricio and the Iluminados enough information to stage a bioterror attack in Washington, D.C. during the investigation of Maryland senator Steven Air, leading to the death of an entire metropolitan S.W.A.T team and three government employees in a car bombing.
Not long after, the Iluminados sect allied themselves with arms dealer Glenn Arias, assisting him by providing specimens of Plaga for use in development of the A-Virus which he planned to use in a bioterror attack on New York City. Fearing for the safety of his wife and daughter, Patricio tracked down Kennedy to a hotel for help. Patricio was shot in an attack on the hotel by one of Arias' agents, Diego Gómez, and died before he could give sufficient information. Arias' attack was successful, though the surviving victims were cured when a vaccine was procured and distributed by Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers.
Cultural practices: Followers of Los Iluminados regularly congregated in dedicated places of worship. Several are known to have existed in the area. In the village, an existing chapel was converted for rituals, and the ringing of its bells was a symbolic call to worship. A cave on the other side of the quarry was also used for the purpose of human sacrifice.
The cult also operated a monastic order, based within Salazar Castle. Monks, dubbed "Cultists", were clothed in black, purple and red robes identifying rank, with some wearing metal masks, or masks made from goat skulls. Among these Ganados, ritualistic tattooing was common, though their heads were normally concealed. The monks are known to have been all bald and pale-skinned, but how much of it is due to the parasites is uncertain. These monks also held their own rituals and would pray before a blood-stained knife with the cultic symbol decorated on the hilt.
Militant organisation: Los Iluminados controlled a dedicated paramilitary group, known merely as "combatants". These individuals were stationed on the island and served as a stronger layer of protection for the group's bioweapons research. The militant group was crippled by the actions of Ada Wong and Leon S. Kennedy
- #38The Islandselective
Keys: The Island
This unnamed island is a small island situated either in a large lake or off the coast of Spain near Valdelobos
History: Once home to an ancient cave-dwelling civilisation which may have worshipped the Plagas, by the Early Modern Period their descendants were crushed in a crusade lead by Gregorio Salazar, a nobleman who would make the region his base of power. Over the years, these towering structures built in the conquest succumbed to age and deteriorated, and by the 21st century little evidence remained connecting the ruins to the Salazar family, save for preserved crests. However, the remaining members of the religion were banished to the island and remained there for centuries. Among the men banished was a man named Adam Saddler, whose descendant would later revive the religion.[1]
The island also became the power-base of Osmund Saddler, leader of religious cult Los Iluminados. Using the guise of a Prophet and backing from Ramón Salazar, 8th Count of Valdelobos, Saddler would expand the cult where it gained its very own militia, research, and later espionage divisions. Massive projects began on the island, starting with a base located on the north-eastern corner of the island against the Salazar fortress ruins, including a prison. As research on the Plagas and derived B.O.W.s continued, new facilities were built across the island, with new laboratories and a communications tower built on the west, and roads built in the centre for transport of supplies.
Accounts varied on the extent of such development. In one that suggested Saddler to be a criminal mastermind who interested in the old pagan beliefs of the area thus sought to obtain Plaga samples for bio-weapons research which allows him to achieve world domination, his funding proved sufficient to establish an underground waterway in a cavern to accommodate a small ship to serve as Los Iluminados' navy along with other structures in the island's north-east side that included coastal wind turbines for energy, and a large steel tower which purpose not revealed due to still under construction.[2][3] Another account that confirmed Saddler to be the legitimate heir of Adam Saddler revealed the task of constructing the island's fortifications being entrusted to Krauser instead, in which the former United States Army Major estimated its defenses should buy Los Iluminados enough time to carry out their plan, installed an antenna array to intercept and monitor activities of hostile organizations, and providing modern weaponry for the cult's armaments. Krauser went so far making some improvements knowing the US government was not the sole threat to Los Iluminados' cause.
In late 2004, the US government began an operation in Spain, which led to the destruction of much of Los Iluminados' island facilities. How many militants survived, and whether they continued to control the island, is unknown.
- #39Las Plagasselective
Keys: Las Plagas, Parasite, Plaga
Las Plagas are a genus of parasitic arthropods that belong to an unknown taxonomical order. They are endemic to a remote, montane region of Spain, from which they derive their name, "las plagas," meaning "the plague" in Spanish. Assuming that Plagas are otherwise typical parasitic arthropods, they are believed to reproduce asexually, with their eggs being expelled from the host and consumed by other animals as part of their life cycle. Plagas generally reach maturity within days of hatching, after which they rapidly progress through three consecutive stages, known (in Spanish) as guadaña, mandíbula and araña (English: 'scythe', 'jaw' and 'spider', respectively). (A parasite is an organism that survives by taking nutrients from the host organism, a symbiotic relationship known as 'parasitism'.)
By latching onto the nervous system, plagas can exert influence over their host's actions, leading to increased aggression in human hosts known as Ganados. Additionally, they form social groups with other infected hosts. Unless the host's brain is destroyed or compromised, the plagan influence is not absolute, allowing them to continue their daily routines. All plagas existing in the 21st century are descendants of two species, one of which is artificial, and was employed by a paramilitary cult, known as Los Iluminados, as part of their bioweapons project.
Though often associated with Spain, the plagas may have originated in Western Africa, based on the discovery of desiccated remains within the Ndipaya Kingdom. These ruins are ancient, possibly dating back to the Neolithic age. The Plaga population in Spain could be as old as the Bronze Age, and evidence of human sacrificial rituals performed by the Ganados is depicted in Wharf B cave art. Count Gregorio Salazar led a brutal crusade against the Ganados in the region due to their pagan beliefs. Surviving Plagas were sealed within caves beneath a mound, separated from the nearby village by a deep valley trench and a large body of water. A fortress was constructed above the caves, with Salazar and his descendants assuming the role of Castellan to prevent the escape of the Plagas.[1]
Around the turn of the millennium, Osmund Saddler, who descended from one of the original banished ganados on a nearby island, discovered the Plagas and devised plans to utilize them for personal gain and international influence through parasitization. Assuming the role of a Prophet, Saddler led the cult known as "Los Iluminados," meaning "The Enlightened Ones" in Spanish. Prophet Saddler gained the loyalty of Ramón Salazar, the 8th Castellan, who agreed to release the Plagas as a means of atonement for his family's "sins" against the Ganados.[2] During the excavation led by Salazar, Saddler, and the hired village workers,[1] the Plagas, which had long been mummified in the low-oxygen environment,[3] were discovered to have survived in the form of spores and were growing within their new hosts when a strange disease spread among the workers.[3]
In the alternate account pertaining the unsealing of Las Plagas, the parasites laid dormant within enormous chunks of amber which subsequently relocated to the island where Saddler family previously banished at. Apparently, workers who infected by newly rejuvenated Plagas had broken few pieces of the amber by mistake hence the others were implored to take extra care in unearthing and transferring the rest.
Following his infection, Saddler's motivations and sanity may have shifted, possibly due to parasitic damage from the Plaga. Accounts of his perception on Los Iluminados varied. In one, he saw both the cult and the Plaga as mere tools for his own power and financial gain. Another claimed that, as the legitimate surviving heir of one of families who established the cult's original iteration, Saddler truly embraced its faith and therefore perceived the Plagas as divine beings worthy of worship.
Further experimentation with the Plagas revealed their ability to mutate humans under specific circumstances, resulting in increased strength, giant proportions, and the ability to regenerate body parts rapidly.[4] The Plagas were also used to create human-animal hybrids, leading to the development of creatures such as the Novistador, the Verdugo, and U-3. Dr. Luis Serra's research indicated that surgically removing juvenile and subadult Plagas would prove fatal if an adult Plaga was present; the only safe method was radiation therapy.[5][note 2]

However, Dr. Luis Serra's leak led a B.O.W. manufacturer, dubbed the "rival company," to become aware of the Plagas. One of their H.C.F. agents, Jack Krauser, was sent to recover a sample for further study. Krauser's military experience made him instrumental in kidnapping Ashley Graham, daughter of President Graham, while she was on her way home from the University of Massachusetts. Graham was taken to Spain and injected with a Plaga egg through a syringe, with the expectation that she would become a Ganado and conduct operations on Saddler's behalf upon returning to the United States. Despite the US government keeping the kidnapping a secret, they received an anonymous tip linking Graham to the area. With many agents under investigation,[6] only US-STRATCOM agent Leon S. Kennedy was forced to begin the investigation alone.
Over the course of the night, the different parties worked with and against one another. Saddler ordered Kennedy's capture[7] and implanted him with an egg to use him as an additional mole in the US. Serra wavered on whether to hand over the Dominant egg to Wong or Kennedy. Krauser and Wong turned on each other while both claiming loyalty to their H.C.F. liaison, Dr. Albert Wesker. By sunrise, Fr. Méndez, Salazar, Krauser, and Serra was dead. The Queen Plaga was destroyed, and Kennedy and Graham were free of the Plaga parasites. The group's bioweapons research was in ruins, along with their army of mind-controlled followers. - #41Ramón Salazarselective
Keys: Ramón Salazar, Ramón, Salazar
Ramón Salazar was a Spanish nobleman from Valdelobos. A descendent of the 15th century noble warrior, Gregorio Salazar I, Ramón inherited the position of castellano alongside his peerage, a duty more important to the family than the peerage itself. As the 21st century came about, Salazar left his Catholic faith behind and converted to Los Iluminados, a cult led by Osmund Saddler, who had access to bioweapons research and was interested in Las Plagas. Although his diminutive stature resembled that of a ten-year-old, and his grey hair and wrinkled face gave him the appearance of an elderly man, he was only 20 years old
Background: Little is known of Salazar's early life. If his claimed age is accurate, he inherited the castle at a young age and had no other family. Though his ancestor, the first castellan, was the topic of much loved folklore in the region, Salazar himself was unpopular among the villagers.
Taking advantage of his young and isolated state, Salazar was approached by Osmund Saddler, who provided him with insight into Los Iluminados, a modern cult sharing the name of an ancient one stamped out by Salazar's ancestor. Salazar fully accepted Saddler's claim to being a Prophet. The mythology of Los Iluminados considered Salazar's family to be tainted by sin ever since the first castellan sealed the Plagas in the ruins his castle was built around. Salazar was determined to atone for this sin, and hired a workforce from the nearby village to excavate the ancient ruins formerly sealed off. The parasites were expected to be long dead, and the discovery of their mummified remains suggested as much. However, the workforce inhaled the carcasses' dormant, fine spores, which over a period of several years regenerated into fully-formed Plaga bodies.
Saddler's research team began experimenting on these organisms, and created a large number of Plaga eggs for the purpose of spreading out to the entire region and, eventually, the world. From this research, Salazar was granted one of several genetically modified dominant species Plagas, which would grant him full control over his body as well as the ability to control rank-and-file hosts. Salazar formed a large armed force of Cultists, and used two Verdugo bioweapons as his personal bodyguards. It became Salazar's duty to protect the Queen Plaga, a large creature which asexually reproduced new Plagas constantly.
2004 abduction of President Graham's daughter: "Did you say "old man," Mr. Kennedy? It might come as a surprise, but I'm only 20 years old!" — Ramón Salazar
In 2004, Salazar became part of an international plot by Saddler to infiltrate the US federal government. President Graham's daughter, Ashley, was to be abducted by Jack Krauser, implanted with a Plaga parasite and, upon her return to the United States, implant the President and other high-ranking American officials with Plaga eggs. The kidnapping plot succeeded, and US agent Leon S. Kennedy was sent in to rescue her. Although Leon managed to find Ashley, they were soon forced to seek shelter in Salazar's castle.
The Castellan laid many traps, monsters, and Ganado forces throughout the castle to impede Leon's progress. In addition, thanks to Krauser's knowledge of Leon's radio frequency, Salazar was able to hijack the communication line and taunt him as he and Ashley made their way through the castle. Although Salazar repeatedly failed to kill the American agent, he succeeded in recapturing Ashley with the help of his Novistadors.[8] However, Kennedy soon caught up with them and survived yet another trap the Castellan had laid for him. A visibly frustrated Salazar sent one of his Verdugo guards to take care of the American agent, while he and his remaining Verdugo hastily inducted Ashley into Los Iluminados before sending her off to Saddler's island base.
Leon, having survived the Verdugo, pursued Salazar into a tower sheltering the Queen Plaga. The agent made his way to the top and confronted Salazar, who made one final effort to halt his mission by merging into the Plaga's body alongside his last Verdugo bodyguard. All three soon perished at Leon's hands, allowing the agent to escape to the island.

Salazar Castle was an enormous fortress located in Valdelobos, a mountainous region of Spain. Built on high ground, it loomed over the nearby villages and hamlets, and was separated from them by a deep ravine and a lake. Along with the castle itself, this fortress consisted of several other large buildings surrounded by a large wall.
The most common enemies of the castle are the Cultists, the monastic order of Los Iluminados. They are armed with flails and occasionally scythes. Further into the castle you will eventually reach the Plaga Mines, where you meet up with some familiar foes. Among the many sub-bosses in the castle include Armadura, Garradors, Cultist Leaders, and Chainsaw Men. Bosses include Salazar's "right hand" Verdugo, twin El Gigantes, and finally Salazar himself.
History: The castle was built before or during the time of Salazar, 1st Castellan. The expansive ruins below it were used as a prison for the Plaga parasites to prevent the cult of Los Iluminados from surviving beyond his reign. The ruins were reopened in the 21st century on the orders of Ramón Salazar, who had become a member of the revived cult.
Leon S. Kennedy and Ashley Graham escaped from the village and into Salazar Castle while attempting to evade a large horde of pursuing enemies.
Architecture: It is a concentric castle that uses the lake as a natural moat. The interior of the building seems much more modern, resembling an 18th-century palace.
Within its walls hides both an opulent palace and a number of horrific deathtraps. Many rooms within the castle house menacing creatures, such as Novistadores and Armadura.
Areas of interest include an extensive hedge maze filled with Salazar's "pets," many large towers, including one that houses a gigantic statue of Salazar himself, and an extensive sewer and cave system, housing some of the castellan's pet insects. The castle may have been built near a volcano, as one of the rooms was situated directly above a lava pit.
Main castle: The castle, proper is located at the southern side of the fortress, and is connected to the village by way of a drawbridge. Further north was a ballroom, which could be reached quickly through a gondola station. Outside the ballroom was a tall clock tower which allowed access to the ballroom and the Castellan's throne room via a rotating bridge.
Lowlands and underground: The grounds in the lowlands of the fortress contains remnants of an older castle which had been destroyed some time ago. Wooden shacks litter the landscape as housing for workmen assigned to mine the underground ruins, which are centuries older than the castle and are decorated with pagan artwork.
Cathedral: The cathedral can be reached by an elevator near the entrance to the underground. The building, in 2004, was dominated by a large, mechanised statue of the 8th Castellan.
Tower: A final, solitary tower was connected to the Cathedral via a bridge. It was built overlooking the fortress' walls overlooking the lake, and had access to a dock for transport to the nearby island.
- #44Armaduraselective
Keys: Armadura, Knights
(from Spanish, meaning "Armor" - i.e. "Suits of Armor") are Plaga-possessed suits of armor, inhabiting the darkest corridors of Salazar Castle in the Spanish region of Valdelobos.
These creatures possess both light "Silver" and tougher heavy-armored "Ornate Black" variations. Plagas who have lost their hosts will inhabit these armored suits, remaining dormant to conserve energy as they wait for a creature suitable to becoming a host. The Plaga stretches out inside the armor and manipulates it with its tentacles, allowing it to move in human-like ways, swinging swords and Halberds to subdue its prey.
History: They are first encountered as Ashley Graham ventures by herself in the back passages of Salazar Castle, shortly after having been released from the iron bindings trap. At first, the Armaduras appear to be harmless armors lining the walls of various passageways. Later on, when Ashley retrieves the Serpent Ornament to open the door to the upper levels, the Armaduras spring to life and attack her. Ashley must run from these enemies avoiding the stationary sets of armor as she runs from her mobile pursuers. And, to make a seemingly laughable encounter one of the scariest parts of the game, the rooms where they are found are pitch black, and only the flashlight allows Ashley to navigate back towards the exit. Luckily, a switch can be used to close the gate to the passageway, preventing them to advance further.
Leon is later attacked by six Armaduras guarding The King's Grail needed to open the way to the Novistador nest in the ballroom.
- #45The Garradorselective
Keys: the clawer, The Garrador
The Garrador, which roughly translates as "the clawer" in Spanish, were once human hosts that underwent physical enhancement through the use of the Plaga, a parasitic organism indigenous to Spain. Though successful in obtaining exceptional physical abilities, the Garrador also became uncontrollably aggressive, indiscriminately attacking anything that caught their eye. In response, their captors were forced to sew their eyelids shut and confine them to cells. This loss of sight heightened their other senses, particularly their hearing, making them formidable opponents even when deprived of their vision. The Garrador are equipped with razor-sharp claws on both arms, which they use to do devastating effect in combat. Once released into battle, they use their acute hearing to locate and track their targets before launching a ferocious assault with their deadly claws.
History: Castle prison cell: The first Garrador Leon encounters is chained up inside a cell in one of the first rooms he passes through after penetrating the defensive walls of Salazar's Castle. Though restrained at first, it soon breaks its bonds as Leon enters the room and attacks him. In this battle, there are two bells in the dungeon where the Garrador is imprisoned. Using its sensitive hearing to his advantage, Leon discovers that the tolling of the bell will drive the Garrador to a state of rage, charging the bell and exposing its vulnerable back, although the bells will eventually shatter when struck by the Garrador's claws. It is advisable to leave Ashley outside the door to the prison, as the Garrador can kill her with a single swipe. However, if the player tries to leave the room, the door will close locking Ashley safely outside.
Cage: Next, another Garrador is found in the room where the Hourglass with Gold Decor is found. Soon after the cage in this room is lowered, this Garrador plunges into the fray, and Leon is forced to do battle with it to survive. The best tactic to use here is to toss a grenade towards one of the doors of the cage, or to employ a stun grenade, but make sure to do it before the Garrador lands (you can do this by skipping the cutscene), as flash grenades allow them to see you. This will stun the Cultists surrounding the cage, giving you a chance to blow the lock off one of the doors. Using the shotgun, TMP, or a grenade, try to open the door opposite of the one you entered through. Run back into the banquet hall and pick off the Cultists that follow. By not shooting the near door, any Cultists in the cage, and the Garrador (assuming you didn't lag on your way out) will try to attack Leon through the bars, and you can safely shoot out of melee range. This Garrador will bang on whichever locked cage door still remains if it knows you're nearby. If it is still in the cage and the player is outside it will keep hitting the door until the lock breaks.
Ada Wong also fights another Garrador in the same location in Separate Ways.
Tower: The final Garrador is fought upon entering Salazar's Tower in a large room with several Cultists as well. There will be two on NORMAL and PROFESSIONAL Difficulty. One of them is armored and is slightly more resilient than the NORMAL Garrador; however, it still retains the same weakpoint. It is the easiest to defeat of the two on EASY mode due to the open spaces and the fact that it is incredibly easy to navigate around it for a shot to its back, provided you kill the additional Cultists that will enter the room. You can also defeat both Garradors instantly by firing a single rocket launcher round between them; however, on PROFESSIONAL mode the armored one will go into a critical state of health.
- #46Novistadoresselective
Keys: the Unseener, Novistadores, pet insects
Novistadores (Spanish for "the Unseener") code-named U-II, were large creatures that were originally human, encountered by Leon during his exploration of an isolated Spanish region.
Based: Human/Insect
History: Novistadores were created from a horrific "experimental application" of the Plaga organism on the human body as part of Los Iluminados' research, fusing human genes with those of various insect species. Leon encountered two forms of Novistador in Salazar Castle; one in the sewers and underground, and another in the castle towers.
- #47The Verdugosselective
Keys: Executioner, Verdugos, the right-hand, right-hand of Ramón Salazar
The Verdugos, Spanish for "Executioner," also known as U-III in the reimagining, were B.O.W.s created by Los Iluminados to serve as personal bodyguards or the right-hand men of Ramón Salazar.
the butler who became Verdugo was revealed to be Isidro Uriarte Talavera. Despite his status within Salazar family's household, Isidro's scientific mind intrigued Saddler to the point of bestowed him a Dominant Species Plaga while converting him to Los Iluminados' faith instead of Subordinate Species Plaga. In the next six years, it was Isidro who carried out experiments to find a way to improve upon the human form and make them closer to the arthropodal Las Plagas they worshipped as per bidding of Ramón Salazar. His earlier work was "U-II" aka. Novistadors, part-human, part-Plaga insectoid creatures with camouflage ability whose first generations created by impregnating a human virgin with a type of Plaga secretion referred as "black liquid" which fertilized egg cells in her womb, resulting her to give birth to mutated babies that eventually underwent metamorphosis into their current forms. Both Ramón and Saddler were impressed by the new species he created, driving him to tears with joy and motivated him to further his experiments[4]. His next approach was fusing human and insect genes where the "volunteer" would be Ramón's housekeeper. The endeavor proved to be challenging as it took him six months in figuring out the correct method to transform her; in the mean time, the housekeeper was in great pain. In the end however, he finally succeeded, and the housekeeper became "U-III" aka. Pesanta. Pesanta's promising capabilities, including successfully tracking down and assassinating the former servant who managed to elude even Bitores Méndez himself, inspired Isidro that he could do so much more in serving Ramón; through the procedure not unlike the one he used to mutate the housekeeper into Pesanta prior which involved black liquid, Isidro became Verdugo, a true servant of God and the executioner of the heretics
A Verdugo was created by a fusion of human and insect DNA completely controlled by a Plaga.[1][2][excerpt 1] Two Verdugos served as Ramón Salazar's bodyguards. They concealed their mutated forms beneath voluminous, resplendent Los Iluminados cloaks, with one wearing red and the other wearing black. The red Verdugo is the result of mutating Salazar's former butler, while the black Verdugo is the mutated form of Salazar's unidentified housemaid.[3]
When Leon survived a booby trap in Salazar Castle that left him in the sewers below, Salazar sent his red-cloaked Verdugo to kill him. Destroying the entrance door and navigating the sewer pipelines above the walkways, it began attacking Leon through the grates as he attempted to relay power to the elevator. Leon successfully powers the elevator, however, causing the Verdugo to attack him more directly in an attempt to prevent Leon from escaping. Depending on the player's actions, it is either killed by Leon or left trapped in the sewers indefinitely.
The black-cloaked Verdugo on the other hand, remains at Salazar's side, eventually fusing with him to mutate into the Queen Plaga to fight Leon and dies alongside Salazar when defeated.
- #48Del Lagoselective
Keys: Salamander, Del Lago, lake · Secondary: lake
Del Lago (Spanish, literally meaning From the Lake) was a massive Plaga-infected amphibian that lived in a lake in Valdelobos.
History One of the earlier Plaga experiments by Los Iluminados, Del Lago, was a salamander that became host to a parasite.[1] The organism reacted to its small host by mutating it, increasing its size considerably. The salamander was sealed in the village lake because the cult was unable to control its behavior via the Plaga, which was the original purpose of the experiment.[2][excerpt 1] It was fed by the disposal of corpses, as seen by Leon S. Kennedy as a pair of Ganados dumped a police officer's dead corpse in the lake.[3]
Leon first learned of the creature near the church, where a letter notified the Ganado that it had been awoken by the Prophet Saddler to guard the lake.
Leon would then fight it in a small motorboat anchored in the lake's shores. While Leon was crossing the lake, the Del Lago got hooked on to the boat's anchor. Leon was then pulled on along behind the Del Lago at amazing speeds. After bombarding the beast with nearly a dozen harpoons, the Del Lago began spewing blood in copious quantities, and it succumbed to its injuries, sinking to the bottom of the Lake, nearly bringing Leon with it.
- #49Colmillosselective
Keys: Fangs, Colmillos, Wolves
Colmillos are Plaga-infested wolves. The name 'Colmillos' means 'Fangs' in Spanish. Notably, each Colmillos must spot you before launching an attack, although if a Plaga emerges, the Plaga itself will initiate the attack.
History Colmillos make their first appearance when Leon attempts to cross the lake again after defeating Del Lago. Four of these ferocious beasts lie in wait for him on the opposite shore. Later, near the Church, Leon faces another pack of three Colmillos, posing a challenge for him to proceed. In Ramón Salazar's maze garden, these creatures become even more prevalent, with Salazar keeping around a dozen of them as his pets. While exploring the maze, players are often caught off guard by their ambush attacks.
- #50Gardenselective
Keys: hedge maze, Garden
The garden is an area of Salazar Castle. It consists almost entirely of a Topiary Maze.
Guide This area is only explored to its fullest on the normal mode or higher. It is filled with Colmillos, which hunt in groups at various areas of the maze. A group of three and a lone Colmillo can be found in locked kennels, which will burst open after Leon passes them. In addition to this, most items picked up in the maze will spawn a wave of the dogs.
Leon requires two halves of the "Blue Moonstone" in order to open a gate and leave the area. These are located on the two fountains found within the maze: one across a bridge that leads over the maze and another atop the fountain in the very center, raised off the ground.
