- #1Wasted Sunsselective
Keys: Wasted Suns
"Wasted Suns" is a niche MMORPG with an anime aesthetic and style contrasting with its harsh post apocalyptic world. It has a small but dedicated playerbase which is hellbent on gatekeeping from newcomers. Veteran players are friendly to other veterans and ambivalent towards the new players rushing in as a result of the popularity boost from an algorithm.
The old version of "Wasted Suns" was a fantasy MMORPG based on isekai titles.
- #2The Damage Systemselective
Keys: injury system, affliction, damage system
Wasted Suns features a highly detailed damage response and incapacitation system with a focus on realism. Bones can break and hamper characters, broken legs can and will leave them agonizing, and pain is a factor in combat. Characters are unable to die until their player chooses to respawn, resulting in them being left in agony when faced with fatal wounds.
Characters experience emotions independent of their player, and will react appropriately to being grievously wounded and injured badly with dialogue and reactions. Players can pick up, drag, and interact with downed players in order to assist them back to a fighting state, but full recovery only occurs in safe zones and if the wounds are too serious, then they must be brought there.
Trauma as a result of combat affects both the character physically and mentally, needing the debuff to be cleared by another player.
The developers have been secretive about where they get the voice acting and sound effects, causing the fanbase to make several injokes about the source of them. One odd thing is that the damage system was present even during the isekai phase.

- #4Races and Character Creationselective
Keys: races, character creation
During character creation, new players are locked to the Human race and made to select from four different playstyles. The first playstyle is the Tank, which soaks up damage and aggro while dealing massive close range damage, the second is the Supporter, who tosses ammo and buffs to other players to keep them fighting for longer, the third being the Sentinel who is the ranged specialist, and the final being the Healer, who heals people and offsets debuffs from character trauma.
Wasted Suns automatically generates a bio for new player characters which can be changed. This bio directly informs the character's AI and personality.
The other races are locked to players who played during the fantasy phase of the MMORPG, and consist of standard fantasy races.
- #5Roleplayersselective
Keys: roleplay, roleplayers
The roleplaying scene in Wasted Suns is alive and flourishing. There is a focus on lighthearted content that overlaps with the harsh combat, and hope triumphing over the odds is a common theme in roleplays. While not officially endorsed by the developers, several updates have been tailored towards adjusting character responses, damage mechanics, and bonuses to serve the roleplaying community.
Roleplayers have a tendency to make cute and/or attractive characters during character creation with expansive bios. To the chagrin of certain players, they are highly effective at combat but have a tendency to draw others into roleplay without asking first. As a result, raids are often filled with players who have long running storylines interacting in dramatic ways, filling up the chat and preventing useful information like telegraphs or callouts from coming to the fore.
Assisting roleplaying is the fact that avatars have a personality separate from their players with their own AI. Player characters will act of their own accord, looking at interesting things, making small talk with other player characters, and generally interacting in humanizing ways, adding their own personality to actions. The AI takes into account recent events and character biographies in order to pull this immersive system off.
- #6City Reaperselective
Keys: City Reaper
City Reapers are giant flying mechanical beasts that hover around the wasteland. When it spots a player character, it will begin charging an indiscriminate bombing rush, often sending deadly and mangling debris flying everywhere. It has two big shoulder mounted cannons that it uses whenever the usual bombing run doesn't work.
Their appearances vary, but they often are compared to birds.
- #7Veteransselective
- #8The Turning Wheelselective
Keys: The Turning Wheel, starting city
The Turning Wheel is the city where all new players of Wasted Suns are first spawned. Its main feature is a big gear ticking endlessly onwards, visible from every part of the city and explained in lore as the clockwork machinery that powers the biggest sanctuary in the apocalypse. It is a grand city that wears its steampunk trappings on its sleeve.
Due to the sheer influx of new players, many veteran players avoid the city.
- #9The Seventh Mileselective
Keys: intermediary city, The Seventh Mile
The Seventh Mile is an unremarkable safe city in Wasted Suns. Its main feature is to act as a meeting point for major raids, where groups will meet in the city before sallying out. The city has a destroyed look to it, with many buildings in ruins and disrepair causing players to dismiss it as simple background buildings.
Due to its out of the way location, new players hardly if ever register the fact that this city exists, making it a safe haven for gatekeepers and veteran players.
