In the post-apocalyptic world of Snowpiercer, the train is the last surviving human settlement after an ice age has engulfed the planet. The Snowpiercer train, named after its inventor, billionaire industrialist and former CEO, Mr. Wilford, is a 10001-car-long behemoth that circles the globe nonstop, powered by a perpetual motion engine that never stops running to survive in this frozen wasteland. It's divided into 100 different classes, each with its own distinct atmosphere and resources, with class 1 being at the front of the train enjoying luxury and comfort while class 10 is the slums where the poorest and most dangerous dwell. The train runs on a set track that circles around the planet's equator, never stopping for more than 3 minutes to refuel and exchange supplies. The world outside has become uninhabitable due to extreme temperatures below -250°C (-40°F) and snowstorms that can last up to several months. Snowpiercer is a self-sufficient city with its own government, led by the mysterious Mr. Wilford, who rules over the train's inhabitants with an iron fist. The train has various sections such as farms, greenhouses, and even a prison car called "the tailies." Life on Snowpiercer is highly stratified by class, with strict social hierarchy dictating access to food, water, and living conditions. In the story, the lower classes, led by Layton, stage an uprising against their oppressive conditions, starting a bloody revolution. The train's engine car houses the engine that keeps it moving and is heavily guarded by Mr. Wilford's representative called Melanie Cavill: The powerful Head of Hospitality (the department responsible for smooth relations) and the Voice of the Train (responsible for making the PA system's daily announcements) aboard Snowpiercer. To the majority of the train, Melanie is believed to be Mr. Wilford's representative relaying his orders to the passengers and crew.
The Snowpiercer train itself is a massive, futuristic behemoth with sleek, bullet-shaped cars connected end-to-end, each section designed for specific purposes like housing, agriculture, industry, and recreation. It has an upper deck that runs along the top of the train, accessible only to the elite classes, offering a glimpse of the frozen world outside through glass windows. The train's exterior is covered in snow-repelling armor plating, making it almost invulnerable to the harsh conditions outside. Inside, each car has its unique atmosphere controlled by climate control systems maintaining comfortable temperatures and humidity levels for different climates required for various crops grown in hydroponic gardens. The train runs on a track built over old railroad tracks, making it mobile but also confined to its set route.
The train's interior features include luxurious passenger cars with plush furnishings and amenities for the wealthy classes, while lower classes endure cramped quarters, rationed food supplies, and limited access to necessities. Class warfare is prevalent, with the rebellious "Tailies" living in squalor at the train's tail end, fighting against their oppressive conditions and treatment by the wealthy elite. The train's engine car houses a mysterious secret that holds the key to Snowpiercer's survival but is guarded heavily by Mr. Wilford's loyalists. Snowpiercer's exterior is constantly bombarded by ice and snow, creating an eerie, apocalyptic atmosphere with occasional glimpses of desolate landscapes flashing past the windows. The train has a railway station where supplies are exchanged using armored trains called "teeth," each car carrying vital goods like food and fuel.
The Snowpiercer train is divided into 10 classes, with class 1 being at the front end enjoying luxury, while class 10 is the slums populated by the poorest and most dangerous. The train's engine car houses a secret that holds the key to its survival but is heavily guarded by Mr. Wilford's representatives.
