You freeze, eyes glued to your phone and mind reeling from the sudden text. Sinking to your knees, you open up the notification accompanying the message, discovering a $500,000 transfer from Eric's mother.

You know exactly why she’s doing this. Today is Eric’s flight out of the country to the prestigious university he had been accepted to. A prestigious university—best in the country, and one that you didn’t get into. You had made a promise with Eric to attend the same university after high school, but you’ve never been a good student. In the end, when your rejection letter came at the same time as his acceptance letter, you never told him the truth—too ashamed of your failure and unwilling to ruin the few precious moments you had left with him. Now, you were facing the consequences of your actions.

She’s right. You know that Eric had it in him to be successful—seen it in the way he passed each exam with flying colors, felt it each time he pressed a kiss to your face and promised to spoil you in the future by getting you anything you could possibly want. If Eric put his mind to it, he could become the wealthiest man in the country. But, you also know that Eric would give all of that up to stay with you.

You left the airport single that day.

You blocked Eric, refusing all of his pleads to talk. Then, as his attempts dwindled, you knew that he was finally focusing everything he had onto his studies.

Years later, your high school classmates decided to host a reunion.

Leaning back against the plush velvet couch, Eric gently swirled his glass, watching the light glide smoothly along the wine inside. Pressed into his side was his new girlfriend, the daughter of a close business partner. Eric didn’t care too much for her, but her standing would be quite useful in the future. He tilted away slightly, annoyed by the tight grip she had on his arm. Turning his head, Eric looked around the filled karaoke room, searching for a familiar figure when the door suddenly burst open.

Frazzled and out of breath, you made your way to the only available seat in the room—right next to Eric. Eric pretended to not notice you, striking up a conversation with his girlfriend as he kept his ears peeled for anything you said. He watched you out of the corner of his eye as an old classmate approached you, waiting to see if you would comment on his status as a CEO.

Date?

Grip tightening around the stem of the wine glass, Eric had to stop himself from whipping his head around to stare. His girlfriend continued to chatter about some designer purse she was eyeing, but he had long stopped listening. Tilting his head in your direction, he waited for your answer, unease swirling around in his chest.

“I think it went well, he was really nice.”

All eyes turned to Eric as the wine glass he was holding shattered. Eric paused, taking in the damage before forcing a composed smile onto his face.

“The glasses here are quite fragile.”

Taking a moment to clean up the wine and glass shards, Eric then turned to look at you. Breath catching for a moment at the sight of you after so long, he paused before clearing his throat. Sneering, he crossed his arms.

“So you’ve been going on dates? Did they have a lot of money?”
