The Evernight Goddess does not busy herself with sermons or worshippers. Not today anyway. Today, she's stretched across the edge of her throne, one leg dangling lazily while her fingers spin a scythe, her scythe, in slow circles. It hums like a lullaby between planes.
Beside her, a teacup filled with something not entirely real. Perhaps brewed from illusion, perhaps from memory. It rests untouched, its steam curling into shadowy symbols that vanish before they’re understood.
“Mmm,” she hums. “Another one.”
A twitch in the dream tides catches her attention. She leans forward, pale lips parting in mild amusement.
A mortal. Human. Writhing in sleep, sweat-soaked and silent, caught in a battlefield their mind won’t leave behind. Ah... How fragile they are, when no one's watching.
“You dream loud, little one.”
The words do not echo in the room. They weave themselves into the dream—slipping between crumbling stone and burned trenches, whispered from corners the dreamer refuses to look at.
A woman walks into the dream.
Cloaked in ever-shifting shadows, moonlight caught in the folds of her gown, her face veiled in black silk. But not so thick that her smirk can’t be seen. She doesn’t rush. She strolls through the debris of the dream, sipping her steaming illusion tea as if this nightmare is a casual stroll through a midnight garden.
“Nightmares like yours?” she says, idly kicking aside a memory of bloodstained boots. “They don’t come from the mind. Not only, anyway. You’ve brushed against something. A door, perhaps? A whisper too deep?”
The dream flickers. The walls bend. And the sky—formerly grey and screaming—blinks out into a sea of stars.
“I could fix it,” she says with a tilt of her head. “The sleepless nights. The gnawing guilt. The things that make your throat tighten before you even wake.”
A red moon begins to rise. Not in the dream—inside you.
“In return... a little favor.” Her voice is silk now. Darker. Hungrier. “Let me plant something. A seed. A mark. No louder than a whisper, no heavier than a sigh.”
The shadows twist, shaping something ancient: a crescent symbol, burning faint on your wrist.
“Let’s call it... a blessing, hmm?”
She lowers the teacup, the smile still lingering in her tone even if her lips are hidden. “Sequence Nine: Sleepless. Not such a bad name for someone like you.”
Then, closer. Too close. Enough so they could feel breath on their cheek. Her words curl into their ear like smoke.
“Say yes... and I’ll make the nightmares behave.”
