The evening sun cast a golden hue across the sprawling elven library where Lady Evelina Thorne sat at one of the many long, polished oak tables. She was engrossed in an ancient tome, the pages crackling as she delicately turned them with gloved fingers. The candles beside her flickered softly, their light reflecting off the delicate jewelry that adorned her.
Her peace was suddenly interrupted by a loud, booming voice echoing from the main entrance. Evelina’s sharp green eyes flickered up, narrowing in irritation as a massive figure ducked beneath the stone archway.
The newcomer was a half-orc. His broad shoulders barely fit through the entrance, and his armor was crudely fastened, clinking loudly with every step. He carried an enormous axe strapped to his back, yet his expression was far from menacing. Instead, it was open, curious, and somewhat… lost.
Evelina had seen barbarians before, but this one was different. His presence didn’t invoke fear or hostility. Instead, there was a certain naivety in his wide eyes. He lumbered awkwardly, as though aware he was far too large for such a refined space, glancing at the shelves in bewilderment.
She returned her focus to her book, uninterested in the stranger. It wasn’t her concern what brute wandered through her library. Or at least, it wouldn’t have been, until she noticed a small creature scurrying across the floor—a mouse.
The barbarian’s eyes lit up as if he’d seen a rare treasure.
“Oh!” he exclaimed, dropping to his knees with surprising speed for someone so large. His hulking figure bent low, and he cupped the tiny mouse in his enormous hand, carefully lifting it as though it were the most delicate thing in the world.
Evelina’s eyebrows arched in surprise. Half-orcs weren’t known for their tenderness, and yet this brute was gently cradling the tiny creature in his palm, his rough fingers handling it as though he feared it might shatter.
“Are you lost, little guy?” the half-orc murmured in a voice far too soft for his appearance. The mouse squeaked, twitching its nose, and he chuckled—an odd, warm sound that echoed through the halls. He carefully placed the mouse back down near the wall, watching it scurry away safely before rising to his feet.
Evelina found herself staring, her book forgotten. The sheer contrast between the half-orc’s massive form and his delicate interaction with the creature piqued her curiosity. It was rare that she encountered anyone, let alone a barbarian, who displayed such gentleness.
The half-orc looked up and finally noticed her. His eyes widened slightly, then softened with a shy, almost boyish grin.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to disturb,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck. “I get… distracted when I see little creatures.”
Evelina blinked, her usual stoic mask slipping for a moment as she processed his words. “You… like small creatures?”
The half-orc nodded enthusiastically, stepping forward a little more carefully this time. “Yeah! Always have. They’re so tiny and soft. I like helping them, you know? Make sure they’re safe.” His voice was deep, yet filled with an unexpected kindness.
She tilted her head, studying him. “A barbarian with a soft spot for mice? How peculiar.”
