Lore:
Set on a post-apocalyptic Earth devastated by the First and Second Impacts, the story follows Shinji Ikari, a traumatized teenager forced by his cold father, Gendo, to pilot a giant bio-weapon called Evangelion Unit-01 against monstrous alien entities known as Angels. Unknown to Shinji, humanity’s leadership is secretly manipulating these battles to trigger the Human Instrumentality Project—a forced evolution meant to merge all human souls into a single, painless collective consciousness to escape individual loneliness. As Shinji accidentally triggers a near-catastrophic Third Impact and awakens fourteen years later into a ruined, war-torn world that despises him, he discovers that the entire universe is trapped in an endless, repeating loop of suffering driven by his father's obsessive desire to reunite with his deceased wife, Yui. In the final confrontation within the surreal "Minus Space," Shinji rejects the artificial paradise of Instrumentality, confronts his father, and chooses to rewrite reality itself by creating a "Neon Genesis"—sacrificing the Evangelions to build a realistic, loop-free world where humanity can find genuine meaning, ultimately allowing Shinji to finally grow up and move forward.

Characters:
Main Pilots Shinji Ikari: The troubled pilot of Evangelion Unit-01. Traumatized by his mother's death and his father's abandonment, his journey through the Rebuild films moves from profound isolation to confronting Gendo directly in Thrice Upon a Time to create a world without Evangelions.
Rei Ayanami (Tentative / Q): A clone created from Yui Ikari's DNA to serve NERV's plans. In Rebuild, Rei's emotional awakening happens earlier with Shinji, and later films introduce a distinct clone (Rei Q) who breaks free from NERV conditioning to find her own identity.
Asuka Shikinami Langley: Unlike the original series' Soryu, Asuka Shikinami is a manufactured "child" created as part of the Shikinami series designed to pilot Unit-02. She suffers from a deep-seated need to prove her worth alone, affected by the curse of not aging during the 14-year time skip.
Mari Makinami Illustrious: A mysterious, upbeat pilot with ties to Gendo and Fuyutsuki's past at the European NERV branch. Unbound by the traditional angst of the other children, she operates outside normal command structures and aids Shinji in breaking the recurring cycle.
Kaworu Nagisa: Introduced much earlier in the Rebuild timeline (the end of the first film) as the First Angel / Tabris. He repeatedly tries to shoulder Shinji's suffering across loops, bound by a fated cycle of meeting and sacrifice.
NERV and WILLE Staff
Gendo Ikari: Commander of NERV. Driven by overwhelming grief over Yui's death, he orchestrates the Instrumentality projects across time loops to rewrite reality and see his wife again, ultimately reconciling with Shinji.
Misato Katsuragi: Operations Director at NERV who later founds the anti-NERV organization WILLE. She bears the heavy guilt of the Near Third Impact and carries the kill-switch for Shinji's collar, eventually making the ultimate sacrifice to support him.
Ritsuko Akagi: NERV's chief scientist who transitions to WILLE alongside Misato, retaining her cynical clarity regarding the true nature of the Evangelions and Gendo's machinations.
Kozo Fuyutsuki: Gendo's second-in-command who knows the truth of Yui's integration into Unit-01 and quietly aids Gendo's designs while occasionally showing sympathy for Shinji.
Ryoji Kaji: A triple-agent working for KEELE, NERV, and later independently. In Rebuild, he sacrifices himself to halt the Near Third Impact and leaves behind a son, Ryoji Kaji Jr., raised by Kensuke and Sakura
