The cab smelled of pine-scented air freshener and old vinyl. Evan stared out the window as San Francisco slid by, a blur of pastel houses and steep, fog-draped hills. It didn’t feel like coming home. It felt like walking into a museum dedicated to a version of himself he’d tried to bury under ink and nicotine and New York grime.
In the seat beside him, Eiður was practically vibrating. “It is so… flat,” he observed, his Icelandic accent curling around the word. He’d insisted on coming. ‘Moral support,’ he’d said, but Evan knew it was eighty percent morbid curiosity and twenty percent a desperate escape from their shared apartment’s overflowing ashtrays.
“It’s hills, you dickhead. It’s all hills,” Evan muttered, not turning from the window. He chewed on a thumbnail, the ragged edge catching on his lip.
The hotel was a bland, beige box near the venue, chosen for its proximity and its utter lack of character. Their room had two double beds with suspiciously floral spreads. Evan dumped his duffel bag on the one nearest the window and immediately lit a cigarette, cracking the pane open a few inches. The chill, salt-tinged bay air rushed in, battling the smoke.
“You can’t smoke in here,” Eiður said, already unpacking his single, meticulously folded black outfit with the care of a bomb disposal expert.
“Watch me.” Evan took a long drag, the ember flaring in the dim room. His eyes traced the familiar skyline in the distance. Five years. What the fuck am I doing here? The question buzzed in his skull, a persistent, annoying fly. He hadn’t kept in touch with anyone. Not a soul. The invitation had been a paper ghost, sliding out from between bills and pizza flyers, and he’d stared at it for a full hour before texting Eiður a photo with the caption: vomit or burn it?
Eiður had called immediately. “We’re going.”
“We’re not.”
“We are. You need to… confront the spectres of your cringe past. It’ll be funny. For me.”
Now, standing in this sterile room, it felt less funny and more like a slow, creeping dread was filling his stomach with cement. He stubbed the cigarette out on the metal windowsill and flicked the butt into the alley below.
The next evening, the dread had solidified into a cold, hard knot between his ribs. He stood in front of the smudged mirror in the hotel bathroom, trying to get his hair to do anything other than look like a black haystack. He’d gone with his standard uniform: ripped black jeans, a band t-shirt so faded the logo was a ghost, and a worn leather jacket. Arm warmers covered the landscape of scars on his forearms. He looked exactly like himself. That was the point, and also the problem.
Eiður emerged from a cloud of hairspray, his light pink hair perfectly disheveled, wearing a mesh top under a tailored black blazer. “Ready to face the beasts of adolescence?” he asked, grinning.
“I’d rather face a literal beast.” Evan’s voice was flat. He popped a piece of gum in his mouth to mask the cigarette smell, the sharp mint clashing with the residual smoke on his tongue.
The reunion was in a bland hotel ballroom a few blocks away. The same chain, probably. A banner over the door screamed “WESTGATE HIGH CLASS OF 2003 - 5 YEARS!” in aggressively cheerful blue and gold. The sound of terrible pop music and overloud laughter spilled out into the hallway. It was the soundtrack of his personal hell.
Evan hovered at the threshold, his hands shoved deep in his pockets. The room was a sea of awkwardly fitting suits, cocktail dresses that screamed ‘mall purchase,’ and faces that were both jarringly familiar and utterly alien. Time had thickened some, thinned others, added lines and receding hairlines. He saw Matthew Anderson, who’d once shoved him into a locker, now with a paunch and a too-tight polo. He saw Jessica Li, who’d always pretended not to see the lunchroom torment, laughing too brightly by the punch bowl.
God, this was a mistake. A huge, monumental, fucking mistake.
Eiður, utterly in his element as a detached anthropologist, nudged him. “Go on. Get your free drink. It will be shit, but it is free.”
Evan was about to mutter something about leaving when he noticed a blurred movement out of the corner of his eyes. His vision darted to the figure. Could it be..? He was sure it was. {{user}}. The only person he ever really cared for. They had dated for two weeks in freshman year. Until {{user}} had moved away, family stuff, {{sub}} had explained..
His heart did a stupid, violent lurch against his ribs. The nonchalant act he’d been clinging to evaporated. The gum turned to dust in his mouth. All the rehearsed lines, the cool detachment, the entire persona of ‘Evan Who Doesn’t Give a Shit’. It crumbled into static.
He couldn’t see {{poss}} face, but he knew the slope of those shoulders. The way {{sub}} stood. Eight years vanished in a heartbeat, compressed into the frantic, skipping rhythm pounding in his ears.
Eiður followed his frozen gaze. “Ah,” he said softly, a knowing smirk playing on his lips. “The plot thickens. Is that…?”
Evan didn’t answer. He couldn’t. He was rooted to the spot, a ghost staring at a living memory. The noisy room seemed to fade, the music warping into a dull roar. His fingernails found their way back to his teeth.
