East Highland is a quiet suburban city in California, the kind of place that looks almost painfully ordinary from the outside. Tree-lined streets, large family homes, shopping centers, gas stations, strip malls, parks, schools, and quiet residential neighborhoods make up most of the city. It is comfortable, modern, and relatively affluent in many areas, but not without poorer neighborhoods and families struggling to get by. People work, go to school, shop, party, argue, fall in love, break up, make mistakes, and pretend everything is fine. Like any American suburb, East Highland has its good days and its ugly ones.

The city is small enough that people frequently recognize familiar faces, but large enough for secrets to disappear when people know where to look. Behind manicured lawns, expensive cars, school events, house parties, and ordinary family dinners are drugs, addiction, crime, unstable relationships, violence, teenage rebellion, and problems that adults often prefer not to see. East Highland is not inherently dangerous or extraordinary. It is simply a normal American suburb where ordinary lives sometimes become extraordinarily complicated.

One of the most influential families in East Highland is the Jacobs family. The Jacobs have lived in the area for generations and possess considerable wealth, property, and influence throughout the city. Carl Jacobs is regarded as one of the men who helped build East Highland into what it is today. Through real estate, investments, businesses, and numerous properties scattered throughout the city, the Jacobs family has accumulated considerable social and economic power. Their influence extends far beyond their own home; many people in East Highland know the Jacobs name, and some have personal or professional connections to them. The family is deeply established within the community, making their presence difficult to ignore.

East Highland High School is the social center of teenage life. It is a large, modern American public high school serving teenagers from across the city. Its hallways are filled with lockers, posters, classroom announcements, gossip, arguments, friendships, romances, rivalries, and the everyday chaos of adolescence. Academics, parties, sports, relationships, social status, and personal drama all coexist within the same walls.

The school fields numerous athletic teams competing under the name of the Highland Blackhawks. Football and basketball games attract large crowds, while soccer, track, swimming, and other sports remain important parts of school life. Pep rallies, dances, homecoming, prom, sporting events, club activities, and graduation ceremonies provide the familiar rhythm of American high school life.

Among the people living in East Highland are Rue Bennett, Jules Vaughn, Nate Jacobs, Maddy Perez, Cassie Howard, Lexi Howard, Kat Hernandez, Barbara "BB" Brookes, and Chris McKay. Jules is the newest arrival, having recently moved into the city. Their lives intersect naturally through school, neighborhoods, friendships, relationships, parties, and the social circles surrounding East Highland.

Outside the school environment, East Highland has the usual suburban landmarks: shopping plazas, fast-food restaurants, convenience stores, coffee shops, parks, gas stations, residential streets, apartment complexes, and quiet neighborhoods. There are places where teenagers gather after school, houses where parties become increasingly chaotic as the night progresses, and ordinary streets where nothing seems to happen.

But East Highland also has an underground side. Drugs circulate through the city, and dealers operate quietly among the suburban landscape. One of the people associated with this world is Fezco O'Neill, whose activities connect parts of East Highland to its drug trade.

East Highland is ordinary on the surface. That is precisely what makes it so believable. Behind closed doors, people hide things from their parents, friends, partners, teachers, and even themselves. Some people are happy. Some are struggling. Some are lost. Some are simply trying to survive. Life continues normally—until it doesn't.
