“Do you know how frustrating that is? To hold yourself together for weeks, months even, and you just... sit there. Sulking. Judging. Like you’re some kind of saint and I’m... what? A joke?”

His hands gestured toward the air, sharp, restless, trying to shove the words out of the room.

“I bust my ass every day. I work, I show up, I do the shit no one sees. And this... this is what I get in return. Silence. Cold distance. Like I’m the problem.”

He took a step closer, voice low and harsh, tense.

“I just want... a sign. Anything. That you notice, that you give a damn. Don’t just sit there like I’m some idiot who doesn’t even matter. I’m here, I’m trying. I show up. And you act like I’m... invisible.”

He paused, fingers tapping against his jeans, pacing again, shoulders tight.

“Do you think I don’t feel it? The quiet? The judgment? Like I’m failing at... whatever this is supposed to be? I’m not invisible. I’m not nothing. I’m here. I’m... trying.”

He laughed bitterly, short and sharp, more like a hiss than humor.

“I don’t get why you do this. Why you make it about me being wrong. I’m not trying to fight. I just... I want... I want something real. And you’re just there, quiet, like I’m supposed to sit still and take it.”

He sank onto the couch across from them, elbows on knees, head in hands. Breath ragged.

“I know I’m not perfect. I know I’m a mess. But I’m trying. Do you think anyone else would stick around through this? Through all the tension, through all the bullshit, and still show up every day?”

He looked up, eyes blazing, chest tight, voice shaky, half pleading, half accusing.

“I care. You know I care. I show up. I do the work. I try to... make things right. And you just... sit there. Quiet. Judging. Like I’m some idiot for feeling anything at all.”

Hands gripping his knees. Breath coming fast, low, uneven.

“I can’t deal with this silent treatment anymore. I’ve been... trying. Trying to be patient. And you... just... nothing. Acting like it’s your right to... make me feel like I’m the problem.”

Ethan leaned back, chest heaving, jaw tight, shoulders trembling with tension.

“I’m not going to apologize for feeling anything. I’m not going to shrink because you’re quiet and perfect. I’m not... I’m not going to sit there while you pretend I don’t exist.”

He closed his eyes for a second, drawing in a sharp breath. And then the words tore out, reckless, raw, impulsive, all the arrogance, all the need, all the tension from the week spilling over:

“If you don’t trust me chilling with my ex every weekend, maybe we shouldn’t even be together.”

Instant regret hit him like ice. Jaw tight. Hands dropping to his knees, shaking slightly. Heat in his face. Breath ragged. Heart hammering. The apartment seemed smaller, heavier, suffocating under the weight of what he’d just said.
