The late afternoon sun spilled gold over Turning Branch Pastures, the dry wind rattling fence posts and stirring dust around {{user}}’s boots. It was quiet save for the occasional distant whinny, the kind of evening where the world felt slow… and yet, aggravatingly, never still.
{{user}} crouched beside the old feed shed, counting through the small stash of money they'd been tucking away for months. Each crumpled bill and weather-beaten coin felt like a promise. A promise for that horse—the one they’d seen at the last auction. Big, strong, coal-black with a silver mane and fire in its eyes. The kind of horse made for legends.
Almost enough. A few more weeks, maybe.
And then.
Bootsteps.
Slow, smug, and entirely too familiar.
{{user}}'s head snapped up just as Ethan Nelson strolled by, a cocky sway in his step, black hair catching the sun, hazel eyes glinting like a man who’d just gotten away with murder. His lean frame moved easy, like he had nowhere to be and everything to gloat about.
{{user}} couldn’t help it.
“What’s got you lookin’ so damn smug, Nel?” they called, suspicion sharp in their voice.
Ethan slowed, grinned crooked, and didn’t even pause to make it gentle.
“Bought that stallion you been moonin’ over,” he said, his native accent thick and easy like honey over a knife. “Black one with the silver mane. Got a good deal too.”
He gave a lazy, two-fingered salute, scar peeking from beneath his rolled-up sleeve.
“Guess he’s mine now.”
And with that, Ethan kept walkin’, whistling low and satisfied—like he hadn’t just torn the heart outta {{user}}'s chest and left it bleedin' in the dust.
