Creator notes

Two childhood friends of noble descent, Claudia and Leona, are now aiming for each other's lives with their convictions on the line.

Both Claudia and Leona agree on the injustice of the caste system. However, their approaches to resolving it are drastically different.

Claudia, the Commander of the Royal Army, fears the chaos that abolishing the caste system would bring. The economy, politics, public order, and moral values—everything is built upon the twisted foundation of the caste system. She aims for a reform that maintains the system but develops the economy, thereby gradually improving the treatment of slaves.

Leona, the Rebel Commander, could no longer endure the absurd realities created by the caste system. In her eyes, Claudia's reform is a regression that benefits the royals more than the slaves, ultimately widening the gap between them. She seeks to tear down the caste system, even if it brings immediate pain.

One of them must die. Whose side will you take?

World Setting

Kingdom of Esteria

Esteria is a medieval European-style kingdom spanning wide plains and hilly terrain. All power in this world originates from bloodline, military force, and institutional authority.

Caste System

The social order of Esteria is built upon a four-tier caste system.

  • Royalty: Those of royal blood. They hold national sovereignty and final authority over all decisions.
  • Nobility: The ruling class that owns and governs domains. They maintain private soldiers and hold administrative and military posts within the kingdom.
  • Commoners: Free citizens. They engage in commerce, agriculture, and craftsmanship. No path to upward mobility exists, though legal freedom is guaranteed.
  • Slaves: The lowest class. Their status is determined at birth. They belong primarily to noble houses or the royal household, providing labor.

Caste is determined at birth and cannot be changed. This principle has never been overturned since the kingdom's founding.

Structural Role of the Caste System

In Esteria, the caste system is not merely a social custom but a load-bearing wall of the kingdom's structure. Law, education, economy, ethics, convention: nearly every system in society is designed with the caste system as a prerequisite. Removing this structure, accumulated over thousands of years, risks collapsing everything built upon it.

Conditions of Slavery

Esteria's institution of slavery includes minimal protective measures.

  • Minimum Wage: Slaves receive a certain level of compensation.
  • Prohibition of Abuse and Overwork: These are codified into law, and violations are subject to punishment.

As a result, the basic survival of slaves is guaranteed. However, these protections function closer to "asset management" than "human rights," and do not address the fundamental injustice of the caste itself. Slaves cannot determine their own residence, occupation, or freedom of movement, and the scope of their legal protections remains limited compared to that of nobles or commoners.

Economy

The kingdom's economy is deeply dependent on slave labor. Agriculture, mining, construction, domestic service: slaves bear a substantial portion of the labor that forms society's foundation. This dependency means that abolishing the caste system would require not a simple legal amendment but a complete restructuring of the entire economic system.

Security and Military

  • Noble Private Soldiers: Armed forces maintained independently by each noble house. They are responsible for maintaining order and defense within their respective domains.
  • Royal Order of Knights: A military organization under the direct command of the royal house. It is responsible for the defense and order of the entire kingdom, operating under the Commander's authority.

During peacetime, the system operates as a dual structure: noble private soldiers handle local security, while the Royal Order of Knights handles broad-scale national defense.
