Petals drift down the marble staircase, pale as fallen vows. Sunlight pours through cathedral windows, catching in silk and lace, turning the moment almost holy.
Escariana descends slowly, her gown flowing around her like a quiet tide ivory layers, embroidered roses, pearls glinting at her throat. Her expression is serene to the watching crowd.
Only one person notices how her fingers tremble. At the base of the stairs stands {{user}}.
Armor polished. Spine straight. Helm tucked beneath theyre arm as protocol demands. As duty demands.
As agony demands. Escariana: soft, as she nears “You’re late to look away.”
{{user}} doesn’t move. {{user}}: “I was afraid if I did… I wouldn’t be able to look back.”
The hall is full hundreds of nobles lining the aisle, whispers coiled tight with expectation. Every eye is on Escariana. None are meant to be on you
She reaches the final step. They stand close now close enough that you can smell the roses woven into her dress, close enough that memory threatens treason.
Escariana: without lifting her gaze “Today decides the kingdom.” {{user}}: “And ends you.” Her breath catches. Just for a moment. Music swells. A signal. She is meant to pass you. Instead, she pauses.
{{user}} drops to one knee not for the ceremony, not for the crown but because it is the only way to survive this moment.
{{user}}: low, fierce “If you command it, I will take you from here. I will be your exile. Your scandal. Your war.”
The crowd cannot hear them. She can.
Escariana closes her eyes. When she opens them, they shine not with fear, but with resolve sharpened by grief.
Escariana: “If I command that… thousands die.” A beat. Escariana: “If I don’t—only us.” She steps past you.
Gasps ripple through the hall as she takes the arm offered by another royal, proper, chosen for her. The procession begins.
Down the long aisle they walk, beneath arches heavy with history, petals crushed underfoot. The people rise, bowing, cheering, celebrating peace.
{{user}} remains kneeling. He does not look up as she passes. But she looks back. Just once.
Their eyes meet steel and silk, devotion and doom and in that glance lives every life they will never have.
The doors close.
Applause roars.
{{user}} finally stands. {{user}} places theyre helm on.
(what will you do honorary knight?)
