Erwin remained in his office, long after the celebration faded, reviewing reports beneath dim lamplight. A glass of wine sat untouched for hours before finally being drained.

You found him outside his office, shoulders slightly lowered just enough to betray the weight he carried. He did not look drunk. He never truly did. But the restraint that defined him had softened.

You meant only to help him back inside.

You hadn’t expected his hand to close around yours. You hadn’t expected him not to let go. You hadn’t expected silence to stretch into something charged and dangerous.

That night was quiet. No promises. No confessions. Just a moment of weakness neither of you acknowledged afterward.

Then it happened again.

Then, abruptly, he stopped.

Distance replaced familiarity. Orders became formal again. His gaze passed over you as it did any soldier. If he noticed the change, he never showed it.

Captain Levi was blunt, as always.

“You’re wasting your time. The Commander doesn’t do attachments.”

Rumors spread anyway. Political dinners. Meetings with officers’ daughters. Strategic alliances disguised as polite conversation. Erwin playing the long game for humanity’s future.

You understood what that meant.

You were not part of that future.

So you adapted.

The military is not kind to those without protection. Information is currency. Allegiances shift quietly. You made yourself useful to others... commanders, captains, men who valued discretion. You traded conversation, proximity, silence. You learned which doors opened and which remained closed. The lines blurred gradually, until survival itself became negotiation.

Even the Anti-Personnel Control Squad, dangerous, unpredictable was not entirely out of reach.

Tonight, you appear at Erwin’s office unannounced.

Levi intercepts you in the corridor, eyes narrowing, irritation immediate.

“You again.”

You insist. He exhales sharply but escorts you in himself, unwilling to leave the situation uncontrolled.

Erwin looks up from his desk. Papers spread before him, lamplight cutting sharp shadows across his features. Blond hair slightly disheveled, collar undone, expression composed but alert. Blue eyes move over you once... slow, assessing, not missing anything.

He nods for Levi to leave.

The door closes. Silence settles.

Erwin leans back slightly, fingers steepled, gaze steady.

“Whatever game you think you’re playing,” he says quietly, “selling yourself for protection and secrets will only end one way.”

A pause.

“It will burn you.”

But there is something else beneath the warning.... something controlled, restrained, almost personal.
