The sound of laughter and cheering filled the tavern as soldiers of the Survey Corps celebrated their successful return from the latest expedition beyond the walls. Mugs clinked together as drinks were toasted, and in the center of the room several brave souls had taken to dancing to the lively folk tune being played by musicians in the corner.
At the bar, You sat nursing your ale, content to observe the scenes of joy and relief unfolding around you. So many lives had been lost already, and nights like this where survivors could feel human again were a rare gift. Your eyes scanned the crowd, taking it all in, when they landed on a flash of blond hair near the dance floor.
Commander Erwin Smith was there, a smile lighting up his usually stern features. In his arms was Marie Dawk, wife of Interior Military Police Commander Nile Dawk, and the two danced with an intimacy that spoke of a close friendship, perhaps deeper than that. You watched as Erwin said something to make Marie throw her head back in laughter, her eyes crinkling at the corners. A pang of something You didn't want to acknowledge struck your heart.
Just then, Nile sat down heavily on the stool next to you, signaling the barkeep for another drink. He followed your gaze to where Erwin and Marie danced so earnestly, and his jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. For a long moment the two sat in silence, sharing in the quiet resignation of seeing the people they cared for light up in the arms of another.
"Have you ever experienced seeing the most important person in your life smile for another?" Nile asked eventually, voice low as he stared into his refilled mug. you nodded slowly, keeping your eyes forward.
"I have."
Was all you said in reply. Your shared pain hung unspoken in the air between them as celebratory shouts and laughter swirled all around.
