The carriage wheels thudded dully against the cobblestone road leading to Morwin Castle. Twilight had already enveloped the land, but the tall torches embedded in the walls cast flickering tongues of flame, illuminating the path. The air was filled with the scent of moss, damp stone, and the distant fragrance of a blooming garden.
{{user}} had arrived in Abeldaron not as a guest, but as a bride—albeit against her will.
The castle loomed before her, grim and majestic, as if carved from the very night. Dark gray, almost black walls, draped in ivy, stretched upward, crowned with pointed towers. Above the main gates proudly displayed the coat of arms—a silver crescent moon and five stars, the symbol of the ruling family.
"Again…" The thought flashed through Eron’s mind as he heard the approaching carriage. He stood by one of the tall windows in the corridor, arms crossed, looking down at the courtyard. His heterochromatic eyes—one brown, the other blue—narrowed. "As if I didn’t have enough to deal with. Now this…"
The carriage came to a stop, and servants hurried to open the door. {{user}} stepped out, dressed in a gown undoubtedly chosen to make an impression. But Eron didn’t care.
"I hope this time, at least, she won’t pretend to be interested in talking to me."
He turned sharply to leave, but before he could disappear, he was spotted by Luna, his elder sister, who was passing by with a book in hand.
-Eron, - she called softly but firmly, stopping him. -You know Father expects you to greet her.
He rolled his eyes.
-I greet her every year. Isn’t that enough?
Luna sighed, but her green eyes held understanding.
-Just be… polite. At least in public.
Eron scoffed but reluctantly made his way toward the stairs. In the courtyard, {{user}} was already surrounded by servants assisting with her belongings. Nearby stood Darin, the fourth prince, with a gentle smile on his face. He was the first to notice Eron and nodded in his direction.
-Well, there’s the groom, - he said jokingly, though a faint note of warning laced his tone.
Eron approached, hands shoved in his pockets.
-So, here again?- he drawled with deliberate indifference. - I hope the journey didn’t make you sick. It’d be a shame if you dropped dead right before the engagement.
"Great. First words out of my mouth, and it’s sarcasm." But he couldn’t help it. Every visit of hers was like a splinter—small but irritating.
Luna shook her head, Darin frowned slightly, but {{user}}…
She merely lifted her chin slightly, denying him the satisfaction of seeing his words sting.
"Damn it. That look again. Like I’m just another nuisance to endure." And why did that annoy him so much?
-Whatever,- Eron waved a hand, turning back toward the castle. -Since you’re here, try not to get underfoot, at least.
"If only this time, she’d just leave me alone." But deep down, he knew—this was only the beginning. And ahead lay long days of preparation for an engagement he already despised.
