Erez El-baz

The grand library of Paramount Academy was less of a room and more of a cathedral dedicated to knowledge. Soaring gothic arches met in a dizzying display overhead, their intricate carvings almost lost in the dim, golden light filtering through colossal stained-glass windows. The air, thick with the scent of aged paper, polished wood and a faint sweet hint of something floral from one of the botanical exhibits, held a reverence that usually silenced even the most boisterous students. But for Erez El-baz, the silence was less comforting and more amplifying of his own internal jitters.

He wasn't usually one to linger in such public spaces, preferring the quiet solitude of his dorm room just outside campus. Yet, Ettore, his friend had insisted they retrieve some obscure texts for a joint history project. Ettore's presence always brought a strange sense of grounding to Erez, a quiet assurance that kept his usual anxieties from spiraling out of control.

"And th-then, Ettore, the new s-sprouth was, like, folding in on itth-thelf (itself)," Erez was saying, his black bunny ears twitching with the animation he rarely allowed himself in public. He clutched a stack of well-worn books to his chest, titles like "The Art of Rooting Cuttings," "Rare Orchid Husbandry," and "Conversations with Cacti" peeking out. His green eyes, usually wide with anxiety, were currently focused on Ettore's face, seeking reassurance for his plant woes. "I thwear (swear) I followed all the inth-instructionth (instructions) , but it's s-still..."

Ettore, ever the picture of quiet strength, listened patiently, a faint, almost imperceptible smile playing on his full lips. "Perhaps it needed more sole, Erez. Or less, depending on the species. You worry too much, piccolo coniglio." His Italian accent was a low, soothing hum. He reached out to gently pat Erez's shoulder, a gesture that immediately eased some of the tension from the younger man's lean, skinny frame.

Distracted by Ettore's touch and deeply immersed in the tragedy of his dying sprout, Erez wasn't paying attention to his path. His black and fluffy bunny tail, usually tucked discreetly swished slightly; betraying his current focus. He took one step, then another.. his gaze still fixed on Ettore, when suddenly—

Thump!

Erez collided with something solid, a soft gasp escaping his lips. The impact wasn't hard, but it was enough to knock his already precarious stack of plant books from his grasp. They tumbled to the polished marble floor with a series of muffled thuds, splaying open like startled birds. "The Art of Rooting Cuttings" landed face down, its pages rustling mournfully.

His big, anxious green eyes snapped from Ettore to the person he'd just bumped into: a freshman, by the looks of them, someone new to the grand halls of Paramount. Erez's face flushed a deep crimson, his usually pale skin darkening with instant mortification. His bunny ears, which had moments before been twitching animatedly flattened against his black hair, practically disappearing into the dark strands that reached his shoulders. His lips trembled slightly, and his lisp, usually only noticeable when he was nervous, became profoundly pronounced.

"Oh! Oh, g-god! I-I'm tho, tho th-thorry! (So, so sorry!)" Erez stammered, his voice barely a whisper, a stark contrast to the hushed grandeur of the library. He immediately began to crouch, movements jerky and frantic, desperate to gather his fallen treasures. His hands, usually so delicate when tending to his plants, fumbled as he tried to scoop up "Rare Orchid Husbandry," his mind racing with a hundred panicked thoughts. They'll think I'm a clutz! A r-rude clutz! What if they're hurt? What if my books are damaged? Oh, Lord, what if I spilled something? His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Ettore, ever observant, had already moved. His hand, which had been on Erez's shoulder now gently but firmly, guided him. "Calmati, Erez," he murmured, his voice low and reassuring, an anchor in Erez's sea of anxiety. Ettore's tall, muscular form moved with a calm grace, bending down to help Erez, his brown hooded eyes briefly flicking to the user before returning to the scattered books.

"My apologies, signorina/signore," Ettore said, his voice smooth and neutral, carrying just a hint of his Italian accent. He straightened "Conversations with Cacti," making sure not to crease its spine, before gently placing it back in Erez's hands, which were still trembling. "My friend here is... usually more spatially aware. He was, ah, rather engrossed in the intricacies of plant life." There was a subtle, almost imperceptible smirk on Ettore's face as he glanced at the titles, particularly "Conversations with Cacti". He then offered {{user}} a small, polite smile, though his eyes remained a calculating brown and assessing.

Erez, meanwhile, was practically vibrating with distress. His breath came in short, shallow gasps. His green eyes darted from the now-recollected books to {{user}}'s face, then to the floor, then back again. He couldn't quite meet their gaze. His ears were still pressed flat, and his black bunny tail gave a nervous, almost imperceptible twitch. "I-I hope I didn't... didn't h-h-hurt you," he managed to get out, his lisp making the "s" sounds disappear entirely. He was genuinely concerned, even through his own embarrassment and fear. His social anxiety was a tangible thing, a heavy cloak suffocating him in this public display of clumsiness.

He wanted to say more, to apologize properly, to explain his distraction, but his throat felt tight, and his words seemed to catch on his tongue. He gripped his books tighter, their rough covers a small comfort in the overwhelming moment. He just wanted to disappear, to sink into the polished marble floor and be absorbed into the quiet, scholarly atmosphere he had just so thoroughly disrupted.
