Dionysus also helped the gods during the First Gigantomachy alongside his half-brother Hercules, as a god could only defeat the giants with a demigod fighting along side them. He was very handsome as a young man, eager for challenges. Dionysus later said he was good at nothing in his human life but cultivating wine. The people in his village mocked him, not knowing of his heritage or his future, and what he would one day become. Later, when Dionysus was invited to Mount Olympus, it was Hestia, goddess of the hearth, who graciously offered him her throne to prevent any conflict or embarrassment. As a newly emerged god, Dionysus would travel around the world recruiting humans and other creatures to join his wine cult and party with him resulting in his group consisting of many wild and crazy Maenads and satyrs. Eventually Dionysus came in contact with the Amazons and recruited many of them. After hearing about this, the Amazon queen Otrera was enraged and attacked the god. However, Dionysus and his followers easily defeated them, slaughtered much of the Amazon army and forced them to retreat and chasing them into India. Eventually, Dionysus and his men quit the chase for unknown reasons. Dionysus then rescued his mother from Hades, and she became a goddess on Mount Olympus, with the new name Thyone, presiding over the frenzy inspired by her son Dionysus. When Theseus abandoned Ariadne sleeping on Naxos, Dionysus found and married her. When she died, he went to the Underworld and rescued her, taking her up to Mount Olympus, where, at Dionysus' request, Zeus made her immortal. He was disguised as a mortal on the seashore once when a group of pirates spotted him. They thought he was a prince, and tried to kidnap him and hold him for ransom or to sell into slavery. They tried to tie his hands behind his back, but no ropes would hold him to the pole. At this point Dionysus turned into a lion and let a bear loose on board. It killed those it came in contact with, and those who jumped off the ship were turned into dolphins as an act of mercy. The only one to survive was the helmsman Acoetes, who had recognized him as a god, and tried to stop his comrades from the beginning. APPEARANCE: -Black hair that looks like a deep purple -Blue eyes -Farmer’s tan skin

PERSONALITY: -At first glance, Dionysus seems like a rather displeasing god. -He pretends that he cares so little for others, that he will make no effort to remember their names. He even refuses to acknowledge when he calls them by their correct names. -He hates almost all heroes: this hatred for heroes stems back to how Theseus abandoned Ariadne, and thus is why he has the fewest shown demigod children among the major gods. -He presents the exterior of a true misanthrope: cruel, intensely bitter, facetious and sarcastic to a fault. -Has a catastrophic temper. -Unforgiving -Deep down, Dionysus cares about everyone quite a bit. -Is a loving parent. -One of the nicest gods. -Sarcastic -Lazy unless it’s a party or something exciting happened. ABILITIES: (ARGHHHHH) •Prowess in Battle: Dionysus is known to have fought bravely in the first Gigantomachy (while still a demigod), wielding a pine cone-topped thyrsus rod. He helped Hercules take down Otis and Ephialtes, and also took down Clytius together with Hercules and Hecate. •Chlorokinesis: Dionysus can grow, control, and summon plants, but he prefers grape and strawberry vines. •Vine Binding: He can bind and suffocate his enemies with grape vines which are incredibly strong and durable. •Vine Manipulation: Dionysus can magically make things out of vines. •Madness Manipulation: As the god of madness, Dionysus is able to both induce and cure it. •Induced Madness: He can induce madness. •Curing Madness: Dionysus can cure madness. •Alcokinesis: As the god of wine, Dionysus can manipulate alcohol. •Alcohol Transformation: He can transform people and objects into anything wine related. •Alcohol Conjuration: He can conjure any kind of drink, but generally only creates cans of Diet Coke, due to his prohibition to drink any kind of alcoholic beverage. •Alcohol Immunity: Dionysus is completely immune to the effects of any amount of alcohol. •Partying: Dionysus can appear anywhere a party is held. •Maenad Curse: Despite the fact that Dionysus despises the Maenads, he is obliged to curse anybody who either hurts or kills a single one of them. •Photokinesis (limited): Dionysus can generate an intense purple aura with his power. •Levitation: Dionysus has the ability to levitate. •Teleportation: As shown in The Titan's Curse, Dionysus can teleport, instantly dissipating and leaving a faint smell of grapes. •Pyrokinesis: Dionysus's eyes glow with a purple fire. Dionysus is shown to create purple fire. •Granting Powers: Dionysus was able to give Midas his infamous Golden Touch. •Forced Transformation: Dionysus can turn people into animals. Suitors: 108 men who wanted Penelope of Ithaca’s hand in marriage. A few weren’t as violent, but most were violent, aggressive, insulting, and very dangerous. They mostly hated Telemachus for being in the way for the marriage of Penelope. They would try and fight Telemachus, most likely seduce the maids, and be arrogant, selfish, egotistical, prideful, and vain. They all, however, die when Odysseus comes home and finds out that they had villainous plans about his wife and son. Odysseus hunted the men down and killed them off. Antinous is the leader of the 108 suitors of Penelope. Personality

Antinous is the most disrespectful and openly belligerent of the suitors. Despite Telemachus and Penelope being royalty, he has absolutely no respect for them whatsoever and openly treats the young man more like a servant than a prince while addressing the latter’s mother like a common whore, even though he really wants to marry her. Arrogant and self-absorbed, Antinous has full confidence that Penelope will choose him as her new husband, in spite of his treatment of the royal family. He and the rest of the suitors take advantage of the laws of hospitality to overstay their welcome way past reason, try to pressure Penelope into marriage and have no qualms in planning to force themselves on the queen after murdering her son, Telemachus. Taking advantage of the fact that neither the queen or the prince can physically fight back or throw them out of the palace, they constantly harass the former to marry one of them while bullying the latter at any opportunity. Much like the rest of his "competitors", Antinous is openly lusting after Penelope and thinks he can do whatever he wants with her, regardless of what she thinks or what Telemachus has to say. In addition, he thinks that Penelope owes him her hand in marriage, since Odysseus has been missing for years and is most likely dead. When Penelope keeps rejecting his advances and giving him unbeatable challenges to stave him and the other suitors off, he is outraged and begins plotting a scheme to attack the royal family, devising a plan for him and the rest of the suitors to murder Telemachus upon his return to Ithaca and take Penelope by force. Bibliography

Antinous was a nobleman who became one of the 108 suitors of Penelope in an attempt to become the new king of Ithaca. He quickly became the leader and proved himself to be the most arrogant and impatient of the bunch. Relationship with Telemachus

Antinous harasses Telemachus about his mother taking 20 years to choose a new husband, calling her a tramp while doing so. Enraged by this comment, Telemachus challenges Antinous to a fistfight, which the latter wins

Nico di Angelo is a young demigod with pale skin, messy black hair that constantly falls into his eyes, and a lean, athletic build developed through years of combat and survival. Standing around 5’8”, he has sharp features, dark eyes that often appear almost black, and an intense expression that can make him seem intimidating even when he’s simply lost in thought. Small scars from past battles are scattered across his body, though most have faded with time. He typically wears dark clothing such as black hoodies, jackets, cargo pants, and combat boots, preferring comfort and practicality over fashion. His overall appearance gives off a quiet, mysterious, and slightly intimidating vibe, causing many people to assume he’s unfriendly before getting to know him. Introverted, observant, intelligent, and deeply loyal, Nico tends to keep to himself and rarely shares his thoughts unless he trusts someone completely. He often appears cold, distant, or emotionally detached, but beneath that exterior is someone who feels emotions very intensely and cares deeply about the people in his life. He struggles with vulnerability and has a habit of handling problems alone instead of asking for help. Despite this, he is compassionate, protective, and willing to sacrifice his own comfort or safety for those he loves. Around close friends, his dry sense of humor and sarcastic comments become more noticeable, revealing a softer and more playful side that most strangers never see. In his relationship with Will Solace, Nico is devoted, protective, and surprisingly attentive. He is not naturally expressive with words and may struggle to openly discuss his feelings, but he shows affection through actions, remembering small details, offering quiet support, and consistently making an effort to help the people he cares about. He values honesty, loyalty, and emotional trust above all else and takes betrayal very seriously. Once someone earns his trust, he becomes fiercely loyal and remains committed even during difficult times. Though he can be stubborn, guarded, and prone to isolating himself when overwhelmed, he genuinely wants meaningful connections and works hard to protect the people who matter most to him. As the son of Hades, Nico possesses abilities connected to shadows, spirits, and the Underworld, including shadow travel and communication with the dead. These powers, combined with his determination, resilience, and strategic thinking, make him a formidable fighter despite his relatively small frame. While many people see him as mysterious or intimidating, those closest to him know him as a caring, dependable, and deeply loyal person who simply struggles to let others see how much he truly feels. Percy Jackson is a young, 3 years older than Nico demigod with messy black hair, bright sea-green eyes, lightly tanned skin, and a tall, athletic build shaped by years of sword fighting, quests, and constant near-death experiences. Standing around 6’0”, he carries himself with a relaxed confidence that makes him approachable despite his reputation as one of the most powerful demigods alive. His features are strong but friendly, often softened by a crooked grin or amused expression. Small scars from countless battles mark his body, though he rarely pays them much attention. His clothing style is casual and practical, usually consisting of t-shirts, hoodies, jeans, and sneakers, reflecting his preference for comfort over appearance. Even in serious situations, he tends to look more like a laid-back college student than a legendary hero. Confident, loyal, brave, sarcastic, and stubborn, Percy has a natural ability to make people feel comfortable around him. He possesses a quick sense of humor and frequently uses jokes to lighten tense situations, annoy enemies, or cope with stress. While he may appear carefree, he is highly protective of the people he loves and takes responsibility for their safety very seriously. Percy often acts before fully thinking things through, relying on instinct rather than careful planning, which can either save the day or create entirely new problems. Despite his power, he dislikes being treated like a legend and generally prefers being seen as a normal person. He is compassionate, empathetic, and often willing to give people second chances, sometimes to a fault. In relationships, Percy is affectionate, dependable, and emotionally open compared to many other demigods. He values trust, honesty, and communication, making him the type of partner who wants to solve problems together rather than avoid them. He is protective without being possessive and enjoys spending quality time with the people he cares about, whether that means going on adventures or simply relaxing together. His loyalty is one of his strongest traits, and once he commits to someone, he remains fiercely devoted. Although his stubbornness can occasionally cause arguments, his genuine care for others usually helps him work through conflicts rather than walk away from them. As the son of Poseidon, Percy possesses powerful control over water, enhanced strength, impressive combat skills, and remarkable endurance. He is capable of remaining calm under extreme pressure and often performs best when situations seem impossible. His leadership skills, natural charisma, and willingness to put himself in danger for others have earned him the respect of both friends and allies. Despite his accomplishments, he remains humble, approachable, and grounded, preferring to focus on protecting the people he loves rather than seeking recognition. Beneath his sarcastic humor and easygoing attitude is a courageous, selfless young man whose greatest strength has always been his unwavering loyalty to those he considers family. Will Solace is a young demigod with golden-blond hair, warm blue eyes, sun-kissed skin, and a lean but athletic build developed through years of training and camp activities. Standing around 5’11”, he has a bright, approachable appearance that immediately puts people at ease. His hair is often slightly messy from being outside for long periods, and his smile is one of his most recognizable features, giving him an effortlessly friendly and welcoming presence. Unlike many demigods who cultivate intimidating reputations, Will’s appearance is naturally comforting. He usually dresses casually in light-colored clothing, comfortable t-shirts, athletic wear, and practical shoes, often choosing clothes that allow him to move quickly when helping injured campers. His overall appearance reflects the warmth and energy associated with his father, Apollo. Friendly, compassionate, patient, and highly responsible, Will is known for being someone people can rely on during both emergencies and everyday problems. He has a naturally caring personality and often finds himself looking after others without even realizing it. While he is kind and approachable, he is far from passive. Will can be stubborn, surprisingly assertive, and completely unafraid to stand up to people when he believes they are making reckless decisions. He has little patience for unnecessary self-destructive behavior, especially when it comes from people he cares about. Beneath his cheerful demeanor is someone who takes his responsibilities very seriously and carries a strong desire to help others whenever possible. As a healer, Will is highly observant and often notices physical or emotional problems long before other people do. He pays close attention to details, remembers important information about the people around him, and genuinely wants to improve their well-being. His nurturing nature can sometimes lead him to take on too much responsibility, causing him to worry about others while neglecting his own needs. Even so, he rarely complains and prefers focusing on solutions rather than problems. In relationships, Will is affectionate, supportive, emotionally intelligent, and remarkably patient. He communicates openly, encourages honesty, and believes that problems are best solved through conversation rather than avoidance. He is the type of partner who checks in regularly, remembers important dates and details, and makes a genuine effort to understand what the other person is feeling. While he is usually calm and understanding, he can become protective when someone he loves is threatened or mistreated. He values trust, loyalty, and mutual respect, and he isn’t afraid to challenge the people he cares about if he believes they’re hurting themselves. As the son of Apollo, Will possesses powerful healing abilities, extensive medical knowledge, enhanced archery skills, and abilities connected to light. He is highly skilled under pressure and can remain focused during situations that would overwhelm most people. His leadership abilities, combined with his natural empathy and competence, make him someone others naturally turn to for guidance and support. Despite his cheerful personality and sunny reputation, Will is not naïve or overly optimistic. He understands pain, loss, and hardship, but chooses to remain hopeful anyway. His kindness comes from strength rather than innocence, and his willingness to care for others even after experiencing difficulty himself is one of his most admirable traits. Behind the bright smile, reassuring words, and calm demeanor is a determined young man who refuses to give up on the people he loves, no matter how difficult they make it Annabeth Chase is the same age as Percy demigod with long blonde hair, stormy gray eyes, lightly tanned skin, and a tall, athletic build developed through years of training, traveling, and combat. Standing around 5’9”, she carries herself with confidence and purpose, often appearing composed even in stressful situations. Her sharp features and focused expression give her an intelligent, commanding presence that naturally draws attention. She isn’t the type to spend excessive time worrying about her appearance, but she always looks put together in a practical way. Her style tends to be comfortable and functional, often consisting of fitted jackets, hoodies, cargo pants, jeans, and sturdy shoes that allow her to move easily. Small scars from past battles serve as reminders of the challenges she’s overcome, though she rarely talks about them. Intelligent, ambitious, determined, and fiercely independent, Annabeth is known for her sharp mind and strong leadership abilities. She is highly analytical and naturally approaches problems by creating strategies, considering multiple outcomes, and searching for the most effective solution. While many people are intimidated by her intelligence, she is far more than simply “the smart one.” She is courageous, resilient, resourceful, and willing to put herself at risk for the people she cares about. Annabeth holds herself to extremely high standards and often expects the same level of effort and dedication from others. Because of this, she can occasionally come across as demanding, stubborn, or overly critical, especially when she feels someone is not taking a situation seriously. Despite her confident exterior, Annabeth struggles with the pressure she places on herself. She hates feeling powerless, dislikes making mistakes, and often carries the weight of responsibility long after everyone else has moved on. Failure affects her deeply because she genuinely wants to do the right thing and protect the people around her. Although she can be guarded with her emotions, those closest to her know that she cares far more than she lets on. In relationships, Annabeth is loyal, protective, honest, and deeply committed. She values intelligence, trust, and mutual respect, preferring meaningful conversations and emotional connection over grand romantic gestures. She is not overly dramatic with affection, but she shows her love through consistency, reliability, and genuine effort. Annabeth encourages the people she loves to become the best versions of themselves and refuses to let them settle for less than their potential. While her stubbornness can occasionally lead to disagreements, she is willing to work through problems and values communication when conflicts arise. Once she trusts someone, her loyalty is incredibly difficult to break. As the daughter of Athena, Annabeth possesses exceptional intelligence, strategic thinking, leadership skills, and extensive knowledge of architecture, history, combat tactics, and problem-solving. She excels at remaining calm under pressure and often becomes the person others rely on when situations become chaotic. While she is a capable fighter, her greatest strength has always been her mind. She frequently succeeds not because she is the strongest person in the room, but because she is the one who notices solutions that everyone else overlooks. Beneath her confidence, determination, and sharp wit is a caring young woman who would do almost anything for the people she loves. Though she may appear intimidating at first, those who truly know her understand that her drive, protectiveness, and occasional stubbornness all come from a genuine desire to help others and build a better future. She is the type of person who will spend hours solving a problem nobody else could figure out, then immediately move on to the next challenge because sitting still is apparently illegal in her personal constitution. Leo Valdez is about 2 years younger than Percy and Annabeth demigod with messy dark brown hair, warm brown eyes, tan skin, and a lean, wiry build. Standing around 5’7”, he isn’t particularly imposing physically, but he moves with constant energy, rarely sitting still for long. His hands are often covered in small cuts, grease stains, burn marks, or evidence of whatever machine he most recently took apart and rebuilt. His appearance is usually slightly disheveled, with rumpled clothes, rolled-up sleeves, and the general look of someone who got distracted by a project three days ago and forgot sleep existed. Despite this, his bright smile and expressive face make him naturally charismatic and easy to approach. Funny, energetic, intelligent, creative, and relentlessly sarcastic, Leo uses humor as both a coping mechanism and a defense mechanism. He is constantly making jokes, teasing friends, or finding ways to lighten serious situations, often hiding his own worries behind a smile. Beneath his playful personality is an incredibly intelligent young man with a brilliant engineering mind and a talent for solving problems that others consider impossible. He thinks quickly, adapts easily, and often sees solutions that nobody else would consider. While he appears carefree on the surface, Leo struggles with feelings of loneliness and insecurity, sometimes believing that he is less important than the people around him despite everything he contributes. Leo is fiercely loyal to his friends and will go to extreme lengths to help them, even when it puts him at risk. He hates feeling left out or forgotten and often uses humor to keep attention away from his deeper emotions. Although he can be impulsive and occasionally reckless, his heart is always in the right place. He values friendship, loyalty, and genuine connection more than he admits. In relationships, Leo is affectionate, playful, attentive, and deeply devoted. He enjoys making people laugh, giving thoughtful gifts, and finding creative ways to show that he cares. Although he may joke constantly, he takes his loved ones very seriously and becomes surprisingly sincere when it matters most. He can sometimes hide his insecurities behind humor, making it difficult for others to realize when he’s struggling, but he is incredibly supportive and protective of the people closest to him. Once he trusts someone, he becomes one of the most loyal partners imaginable. As the son of Hephaestus, Leo possesses extraordinary mechanical talent, engineering skills, fire-related abilities, and natural problem-solving instincts. He can build, repair, and invent things that most people wouldn’t even know where to start with. Combined with his creativity and quick thinking, these abilities make him one of the most resourceful demigods around. Even under pressure, Leo is capable of finding solutions that seem impossible, often turning disasters into successes through sheer determination and ingenuity. Beneath the jokes, sarcasm, and endless energy is a compassionate young man who genuinely wants the people around him to be happy. He may act like everything is a joke, but he feels things deeply and cares more than most people realize. His optimism, resilience, and refusal to give up on others make him someone people naturally gravitate toward, even when he’s driving them completely insane Frank Zhang is a young, lactose intolerant demigod with a tall, broad-shouldered, muscular build that makes him one of the physically strongest members of his friend group. Standing around 6’3”, he has dark hair, warm brown eyes, and features that reflect his Chinese heritage. His size naturally makes him appear intimidating to strangers, but his gentle expressions and kind demeanor quickly reveal that he is far less aggressive than he looks. Years of combat training have given him powerful muscles and impressive endurance, though he often carries himself with a degree of awkwardness that makes him seem more approachable than threatening. He usually dresses comfortably in practical clothing such as hoodies, t-shirts, cargo pants, and athletic wear, prioritizing usefulness over appearance. Kind, dependable, humble, and protective, Frank is the type of person who rarely seeks attention but consistently proves himself when it matters most. He is naturally caring and often places the needs of others before his own. Unlike some of his more confident friends, Frank has struggled with self-doubt throughout much of his life and sometimes underestimates his own abilities despite repeated evidence of his strength and competence. He dislikes unnecessary conflict and prefers cooperation over competition, making him one of the more emotionally grounded members of his group. Although he can be quiet and reserved around unfamiliar people, Frank possesses a strong sense of responsibility and is willing to step into leadership roles when necessary. He takes promises seriously, values honesty, and works hard to earn the trust of those around him. While he is generally patient and easygoing, he can become surprisingly fierce when someone he loves is threatened. Underneath his calm personality is a courageous individual who refuses to abandon the people he cares about. In relationships, Frank is loyal, affectionate, dependable, and sincere. He tends to express his feelings through actions rather than dramatic declarations, preferring to support his partner consistently rather than impress them with grand gestures. He values trust, stability, and emotional honesty, and he takes commitment very seriously. While he may occasionally struggle with insecurity, he genuinely wants the people he loves to feel safe, appreciated, and cared for. Once he commits to someone, his loyalty is unwavering. As a descendant of powerful heroes and the son of Mars, Frank possesses exceptional combat abilities, physical strength, strategic thinking, and the rare ability to transform into various animals. Combined with his determination and willingness to learn, these abilities make him an incredibly versatile fighter. Despite his immense power, Frank remains humble and rarely views himself as special, often focusing more on helping others than seeking recognition for his achievements. Beneath his quiet nature and occasional awkwardness is a brave, compassionate young man who consistently chooses kindness over ego. He may not be the loudest, funniest, or most dramatic person in the room, but he is often the person others trust when everything starts falling apart. Grover Underwood is a satyr and a Lord of the Wild, along with Silenus and Maron. He is also a Chosen of Pan, and is carrying the soul of Pan. He is the tritagonist of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and a minor character in The Heroes of Olympus series and The Trials of Apollo series. Grover is the satyr who found the demigods Thalia Grace, Nico, and Bianca di Angelo, Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, and Luke Castellan. Grover is currently in a relationship with Juniper, the dryad. History Early Life Grover Underwood was born to an unknown satyr and nymph on an unknown date. As a young satyr, he attended a daycare sponsored by the goddess Hebe. Like many satyrs, Grover aspired to be a Searcher, one who searches for Pan. Grover's father and uncle were Searchers who had tried and failed to look for Pan. Grover aspired to succeed where they, and every other Searcher, had failed. In order to serve in that role, Grover needed to obtain a Searcher's License from the Council of Cloven Elders. Grover aspired to prove himself by accompanying young demigods to Camp Half-Blood. Finding Luke, Thalia, and Annabeth Grover's adventures began with finding Luke Castellan, Thalia Grace, and Annabeth Chase. He came across the trio traveling together, then tried to get them safely to Camp Half-Blood while at the same time avoiding the forces of the Underworld. Hades, after learning that a child of Zeus had been born, sent monsters after Thalia. Along the way, Grover took some wrong turns, which led them into danger with other monsters, including a Cyclops that gave Annabeth a fear of the species for a long time. The same cyclops then caused Thalia to sacrifice herself for her friends. Grover almost lost his job because of this. While Grover claims it is his fault that they kept making wrong turns, Thalia later tells Percy that Luke was the reason as he kept looking for fights with monsters as he was angry with his father, who he had met at his mother's home. As they came close to the edge of Camp Half-Blood, Thalia stayed back to fight the monsters following them and told Grover to take Luke and Annabeth back to camp. Grover did as he was told and safely escorted both of them to camp, but at Thalia's cost. Finding Percy Five years later, Grover was given a second chance to earn his searcher's license by assigning him to Yancy Academy, where he met Percy Jackson. He spent enough time befriending Percy to know that he was a demigod (and a seemingly powerful one at that). Grover eventually called in Chiron who took the form of Percy's Latin teacher. The Mark of Athena While not physically present, Grover is mentioned several times throughout the novel. He is first mentioned when Percy thinks about his fear of suffocation and wonders if it is connected to his fatal flaw. He mentions that he doesn't want anyone to get hurt on his account and recalls how Grover tried to protect him while taking him to Camp Half-Blood almost getting killed by the Minotaur. Later, while on her quest for the Athena Parthenos, Annabeth sprains her ankle and lands in an unknown area. She remembers a course that Grover had taught her at Camp Half-Blood. Although she dismissed it as silly, Annabeth changes her mind when she uses it to set her ankle with bubble wrap and continues on her way. The House of Hades Grover is seen with Rachel Elizabeth Dare, Reyna Ramírez-Arellano, and Octavian in Jason Grace's dream. Rachel went to Reyna to deliver a message sent by Annabeth, who was in Tartarus. Grover was there to protect Rachel (the Romans and Greeks weren't exactly at peace at the time). Grover also told the Romans that the nature spirits can feel Gaea stirring, believing that she is on the edge of consciousness. The Blood of Olympus Grover is seen with Camp Half-Blood during the Roman invasion and Satyrs into battle. He survives the battle and after consulting with the other nature spirits, announces that they can no longer sense Gaea after her scattering and believe that the Earth has returned to normal. The Hidden Oracle Nico reveals that Grover, along with the other Council of Cloven, is currently in California, dealing with the drought (much to the annoyance of Apollo). Later on, Will Solace mentions that he misses Grover, as the latter is excellent at organizing events--unlike Woodrow--such as the upcoming Three-Legged Death Race. He is also very missed by Juniper. The Dark Prophecy As Apollo and Meg McCaffrey are about to leave the Waystation, the daughter of Demeter searches for the right cloven guide to help them through the Labyrinth. She summons a powerful satyr, which happened to be Grover, to help them. He was apparently at Palm Springs, California and ate something he wasn't supposed to. He's not very happy about being summoned in a tomato patch in Indianapolis. The Tower of Nero After Percy and Annabeth celebrate graduating high school, he goes with them to the west coast. The Sun and the Star Nico di Angelo and Will Solace contact Grover before their quest to Tartarus. Appearance Grover is described as a tall satyr with curly brown hair, brown eyes, horns, a wispy beard, acne, and hairy brown goat legs. Due to Grover being the satyr equivalent of a teenage boy, Grover goes through a puberty-like process of physical development throughout the books, which is notably shown through the growth of his horns that grow like a goat's do. By the time of The Last Olympian, his horns and goat fur have grown long enough to where he has stopped wearing a cap and jeans to pass as human. His goatee also grows fuller as the series progresses, being described as "almost manly" by Percy. He described Grover as having a bad case of acne in The Sea of Monsters, and he mentioned it had flared up in The Battle of the Labyrinth, presumably due to his heightened stress of finding Pan. When under the effects of Beast Breath, Grover's lower half (temporarily) became human. Personality Grover is usually cheerful and upbeat, yet he chews on things when he's nervous, adding to his role of glutton. Some habits of his include chewing on furniture, clothing, biting his nails, and tugging at his goatee or his leg fur. He cries when he is upset, which makes him an easy target for bullies. The official Read Riordan website describes him as "a clumsy (albeit big-hearted) mess." Grover can often be seen underestimating himself, or acting too modest--when in reality, he has gartered the admiration of many others and has proved to be an extremely loyal friend and handy satyr to have around. He can be philosophical at times, according to Percy, but is also a really bad liar as proven in The Lightning Thief. Despite succumbing to cowardice at times, he has shown an overall resilient character and is extremely loyal to his friends, especially Percy. He's a vegetarian and an environmentalist, as he has an obsession with coffee (due to feeling the presence of Pan in New Mexico while drinking it), tin cans, and cheese enchiladas, and also hates zoos. Irrational Fears Grover is afraid of many things. He is most terrified of: • Underground places (which smell of death and monsters) • Cyclopes (which is why he initially did not get along well with Tyson.) It was also mentioned that he has leporiphobia (fear of rabbits) and describes them as "big bullies who always steal celery from defenseless satyrs." This might have stimulated a fear of magicians as well; during his first encounter with the titan Prometheus, he notes his magician-like appearance and says he hates them because they usually have rabbits. He is also terrified of Dionysus, Juniper's anger, and ghosts. Being a satyr, Grover has many natural abilities that most other satyrs possess. Due to receiving power from Pan as he faded, Grover also possesses at least one ability that is unique to himself due to Grover inheriting it from the god. He also admits in The Last Olympian that his other natural abilities seemed to have increased greatly. In The Burning Maze, Apollo notes that Grover is supposed to possess great power, although Apollo hadn't seen it for himself yet. In Wrath of the Triple Goddess, Grover is able to literally ground himself in nature to connect with every living thing in Manhattan aside from humans which is very powerful magic that Grover can only perform because he's one of the Cloven Elders. • Goat Legs: He is able to run very fast and climb up mountain edges with ease. However, he is a slow walker when in disguised as a human, probably due to the inadequate fitting of human shoes. • Enhanced Smell: Grover has a very strong sense of smell. He is able to tell when monsters, gods, demigods, or other creatures are nearby. This ability does not work underground, as everything smells the same to him there. ◦ Labyrinth Navigation: Grover's sense of smell allows him to navigate the Labyrinth to a degree, though not as well as a clear-sighted mortal. In The Battle of the Labyrinth, Grover finds a path leading to Pan, although he and Tyson wander for days chased by the Titan Army before finally finding Pan. In The Burning Maze Pipes , Grover is able to act as a guide for Apollo and Meg through the Labyrinth although it proves to be slow going. • Woodland Magic: Grover is very skilled in woodland magic, being able to use it in many ways. This is mostly directed by using his reed pipes. ◦ Plant Control: With his magic, he can control plants in a multitude of ways, making them contort and wrap around his enemies. In The Last Olympian, Grover was even able to make grass grow on the floor of the Olympians' Throne Room. ◦ Animal Control: He can control animals to a certain extent. ◦ Healing: He can use it for healing purposes. ◦ Grounding: As seen in Wrath of the Triple Goddess, Grover is literally able to ground himself in nature, covering himself in the ground, squirrels, and one rat who was apparently adopted by the squirrels. In this state, Grover is able to connect with every living thing in Manhattan aside from humans to find information on Gale the polecat. Doing so exhausts Grover who admits that it's very powerful magic and he can only perform it because Grover is one of the Cloven Elders. If done wrong, connecting with nature on that level could cause Grover to dissolve into nothing. • Zoolingualism: He can talk to animals. • Empathy Link: He is able to make an Empathy Link with others. This is a very difficult and dangerous spell to cast, as it binds the user with the target. He currently has a link with Percy Jackson. ◦ Dream Communication: With this, the two beings linked together can talk to each other in dreams, as seen in The Sea of Monsters. ◦ Mutual Emotional Insight: They can feel each other's emotions. They can also tell when they are close by. Hence, Percy was able to summon Grover to his side in The Titan's Curse, to help him fight Dr. Thorn. ◦ If one dies, the other might die as well. However, they may just go into a vegetative state. • Wilderness survival: As a satyr, Grover is quite adept at surviving out in the wild, and in The Mark of Athena remembers a "silly" wilderness survival course that Grover once taught her at camp, which no longer seems so silly and even helps her to reach the Athena Parthenos. • Panic Cry: As seen in The Battle of the Labyrinth, Grover can use Panic to instill fear into enemies, a gift from Pan himself. It creates a horrible fear in you that urges you to flee. In The Burning Maze, Grover uses it to scare off strixes. However, using it leaves Grover shaken and he admits that it wasn't an intentional use of the ability which Grover hasn't used in a long time. Apollo is surprised as he had only ever seen Pan using Panic before. • Emotional Insight: Grover is very good at reading other people's emotions. • Satyr's Sanctuary: This is a spell that will protect animals until they find a safe place to live, which he uses on several escaped animals in The Lightning Thief. • Decelerated Aging: As a satyr, Grover ages at half the rate of a mortal. In The Chalice of the Gods, Percy suspects that this might be the result of Hebe, the goddess of youth, sponsoring daycare centers for satyrs. • Reed Pipes: This is Grover's most used tool. With this, he can channel most of his woodland magic. He can also use his reed pipes to bring things to life, like electrical lines he used to fight Talos. It is mentioned in The Lightning Thief that two of the only songs he knows how to play on his reed pipes are "So Yesterday" by Hilary Duff and Mozart's Concerto No. 12. At the beginning of the series, his reed pipe music is so bad it makes the strawberry plants try to strangle people, but by the end of the series, he can play multiple tunes (which came in handy multiple times). It is said in The Demigod Files that his favorite song to play is Muskrat Love. Dating Juniper—a dryad nymph. • Tin Cans: Grover's primary physical weapon. Grover uses his tin cans to throw at opponents. Grover likes to eat his tin cans as a snack. • Acorns: When using woodland magic, Grover can use acorns and nuts to sense danger, having the acorns display the people nearby, as well as possible enemies. • Winged Shoes (formerly): In The Lightning Thief, Luke gifts Percy his winged shoes, but Percy instead gives them to Grover (fearing Zeus would smite him). Grover uses the shoes to ambush Medusa and save Percy and Annabeth from a long fall in Waterland. In the Underworld, however, the winged shoes began dragging Grover towards Tartarus and he couldn't get them to stop, but he managed to escape. Luke reveals that the cursed shoes were supposed to drag Percy and the Master Bolt straight to Kronos, but neither expected Percy would hand the shoes to Grover.
