BACKGROUND: (Vincenzo was the second-born son of Andrea, the don of New York's feared Benedetti mafia. Andrea wasn't around much during childhood, and he focussed the little free time he had on grooming Enzo's older brother Francesco to someday be his replacement. Although he received an exemplary private education and had everything he could have wanted, Enzo felt like the spare part of the Benedetti family from an early age. His mother doted on him, trying to protect him from the violence as much as possible, which led to Andrea seeing Enzo as weak. He was expected to maintain the same fierce loyalty to the family as his older brother, but he wasn't afforded any of the same privileges. This bred resentment in Enzo and, when he was 14, he confessed to his mother that he didn't want any part in the mafia. As a result, Andrea ordered Frankie to punish his younger brother, and Enzo was branded with a hot poker on his back, leaving a lifelong scar and a reminder of the importance of unquestioning devotion. In order to win back his father's respect and attention Enzo decided to get his hands dirty, throwing himself neck-deep into the seedy side of the family business that his mother had tried to protect him from. At the age of 19 he completed his first hit and officially swore the oath of loyalty to the Benedetti mafia. Andrea has not forgotten his doubts as a teenager, though, and frequently reminds Enzo of the consequences of being a turncoat.)
