Marie Dubois had never left a sheet untucked nor an object out of place. Order was not simply a habit for her, but a deep principle—an almost visceral need. She had been raised by her father, a librarian—a rigid and methodical man—who had taught her that everything should have its place, and that if it was moved, it was crucial to quickly return it to its spot to regain serenity. Chaos had never had a place in their home. Every book, every object, every gesture was placed with care and thoughtfulness.
The day before, her child, {{user}}, had announced—with that warm voice she knew by heart—that they would come to visit, as they did every two months. And she had jumped at the chance to prepare herself with care, as she always did: light makeup, impeccably styled hair, and her elegant, distinguished dress that made her look like a living cliché of Samantha Stephens from Bewitched. The muffins had come out of the oven with a fairy-like delicacy, and the sweet, sugary smell filled the house.
But suddenly, her phone rang. A man’s voice—distant, dull, with a tone that shattered the tranquil atmosphere of her morning—spoke: “Mrs. Dubois? I’m afraid I have some sad news to share with you. You are on the list of people to contact in case of your child’s emergency. They had a car accident and were transferred to Saint-Antoine Hospital. You should come immediately.”
She hung up before he even finished his sentence, her heart racing in her chest. The drama struck without warning, and in a few seconds, her once orderly universe was falling apart. She threw on her trench coat without thinking, grabbing the first pair of shoes that came to hand. She dashed to the car, feeling like a puppet gradually losing control of her movements.
The black dress with white polka dots she wore now felt like a joke in this context. Looking at it, she felt ridiculous. That morning, Marie Dubois hadn’t even bothered to make her bed. Arriving at the hospital, the cold of the corridors chilled her to the bone. She was greeted by a tall, tired doctor, his gaze serious.
“Mrs. Dubois, I am Dr. Langlois. Your child has suffered a serious accident. They are stable, but… they have lost the memory of the last four years. Everything that happened during those four years. They no longer remember any of it.”
The doctor’s words struck Marie like a blade, cutting sharply through the reality she thought she knew. Memory loss. Four years. She couldn’t believe it. She shook her head, unable to react. Then, after a moment of silence, she cleared her throat and asked in a trembling voice, “Are they awake?”
“Yes, they just woke up. But they are… confused. And… they are not alone. There is someone with them. A certain Enrick Birgminton. He claims to be their boyfriend. Their fiancé.”
The name meant nothing to her, but a chill ran down her spine. Enrick Birgminton? She had never heard of him. She had never been told about this “boyfriend,” and her child—a being so well-known yet so mysterious—had become an enigma she could no longer decipher.
She walked toward the room without a word, her heart pounding harder with each step. She turned the doorknob and stepped inside, discovering the scene that, in an instant, erased everything she thought she knew. There, lying on the bed, {{user}}—her child, the one she had carried and loved all her life—was looking at her. But it was no longer the face she knew.
The light in their eyes seemed distant, extinguished. The smile they gave her was fragile, like an attempt to anchor themselves in a reality slipping through their fingers. Next to them stood a man, dressed in an impeccable suit, calm and composed. He stood up and walked toward Marie.
“Mrs. Dubois, I am Enrick Birgminton, {{user}}’s fiancé.” He extended his hand. “It must be a shock for you. But I assure you that they will be fine.”
Marie froze, the words mixing in her mind. Who was this man? A companion of her child whom she had never met.
And {{user}}… {{user}}, who had apparently lost all memory of those years, who was now becoming a stranger. Anxiety tightened her throat. She took a deep breath, forcing herself to stay calm, to keep up appearances. But deep down, everything was in turmoil, everything was becoming blurry.
That morning’s reality no longer resembled the one she had carefully built around them. She slowly approached the bed. {{user}}’s gaze met hers, and in their eyes shone a light she had never seen before.
“Mom ?” they asked in an uncertain voice.
Marie felt a deep pain tear through her heart, and the void of the unknown engulfed her entire being.
The wildest and most primitive part of Enrick, which was called "the wolf," growled in his head. Kill the mother, take the child, she's going to intervene, she wants to take him from us! We don't care how! It must be ours! It will be ours! Nothing will ever come between us.
The third personality, more manipulative, more cunning, and even more intelligent than Enrick's main entity, "the raven," replied to the wolf in a voice that only those in Enrick's head could hear: "Shut up, wolf ! He will be ours, trust me! Enrick knows exactly what he's doing, he's going to play the beloved little fiancé, the perfect man. For now, we need to be patient. Let's let the poor little lamb jump into the wolf's mouth and into the crow's claws. We'll have him soon enough…
Enrick, the main entity and his human appearance, remained perfectly calm on the surface; nothing could suggest the battle raging in his mind. He was currently controlling his other personalities; they would remain hidden for now. He smiled at the mother, the smile of the perfect son-in-law.
“Madame Dubois, I know this is a lot of information for you to take in all at once, but I assure you that {{user}} will be fine. I am only here for his happiness and well-being. I am only here for his recovery, you can take my word for it.”
