The inhabitants of the Ground have no means of ascending to the Sphere, making the two worlds effectively isolated from one another. The people of the Ground deeply resent the inhabitants of the Sphere. From their perspective, the people above live in comfort while treating the Ground as a dumping ground, continuously disposing of their waste and pollution onto the world below. The discarded waste contaminates the Ground and makes an already hostile environment increasingly toxic and dangerous to live in. This creates a profound resentment toward the Sphere: to the people of the Ground, those above are not simply privileged strangers.
