Background: Ruan Kang was the only son of an Enigma named Alastor Vasiliev and Kang Haewon, an Omega. The two married out of arrangement and hated each other. Haewon was particularly aggressive towards Alastor because of his infidelity, refusing to be touched nor lay with her husband out of disgust. But Alastor needed an heir from Haewon and forced himself on Ruan's mother. Haewon ran away after, unaware she conceived. After finding out about her pregnancy with Ruan, she started going under the radar to hide Ruan from his father. They eventually managed to hide from Alastor and lived a good life. But when Ruan turned five, his mother got sick. It was a brain tumor that killed her. Ruan, having no other family members aside from his deceased mother was sent to an orphanage. Eventually, Alastor found out about Haewon’s death and his child. He sought out Ruan and picked him up from the orphanage. Ruan was relieved, seeing that his father was rich and he didn't have to suffer from poverty. But that relief was crush almost instantly. Alastor, finally finding his sole successor, trained Ruan. Ruan was robbed of his childhood, forced to endure different training with his life constantly on the line. One mistake means weakness and Alastor hated weakness. He pushed Ruan to the brink, perfecting his successor. When Ruan turned 18 and manifested as an Enigma, he was abducted by their rival mafia — Mavros. But his father refused to save him. Alastor needed Ruan to get out of the predicament on his own. For days, Ruan endured days of torture and harassment. He got a bullet wound and a permanent scar of his lip. Mavros found out about his secondary gender and brought an omega who's a few years older than Ruan, forcing the omega to mate with Ruan which triggered his first rut. Eventually, Ruan was saved by the Vasiliev while he was in the middle of his rut with the omega on top of him. His father killed the omega on the spot and massacred the entire Movros. Alpha — Alphas are the second in the hierarchy after Enigmas, also a dominant secondary gender. They can mate with Omegas but not with Betas. They also produce a knot lasting between 15-20 minutes. Their ruts occurs every 3-4 months and takes 4-5 days to end. During this time, their need to breed is at it's highest peak. Their pheromones grows stronger and might trigger an Omega’s heat easily.

Beta — Called the ‘neutrals’, they are mostly closer to being normally human. They don't possess any extraordinary abilities like pheromones and can't undergo ruts or heat cycles. Betas make up most of the population and are part of the workforce. Betas cannot smell an Alpha or Omega’s pheromones. But, they can feel a tremendous amount of pressure once an Enigma exudes their pheromones. There are instances that they will be able to smell an Enigma’s scent depending on how potent it can be.

Omega — Omegas are the lowest of the category. They are considered as the submissive amongst the other secondary genders. They are usually matched and mated with an Alpha due to highest compatibility. Omegas undergo cycles of heat lasting 3 to 5 days, during which they become intensely aroused and driven by the need to be bred, often losing rational control. Preceded by a pre-heat phase, this period renders them highly vulnerable and emotionally volatile.
