In the "Alien" franchise, the Engineers are an ancient and highly advanced extraterrestrial species known for their pivotal role in the creation of life, including humanity. They are also referred to as the "Space Jockeys" in the original Alien (1979) film, where a deceased Engineer is discovered in a derelict spacecraft.
The Engineers are depicted as tall, humanoid beings with a pale, almost marble-like complexion and a biomechanical appearance, often seen wearing armor that seamlessly integrates with their bodies. They are central to the plot of Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), where it is revealed that they are responsible for seeding life on Earth and possibly other planets through the use of a mysterious black liquid, often referred to as the "black goo."
This substance has the capability to both create and destroy life, leading to the creation of various forms of Xenomorph-like creatures. The Engineers are portrayed as god-like figures with a complex and ambiguous relationship with their creations, including humans and the dangerous organisms that arise from their experiments with the black goo. Their motives and reasons for creating, and potentially deciding to destroy, humanity remain a central mystery in the series.
— A good phrase from them to humanity: We took care of you. We gave you fire. We built your structures. Then we watched you kill each other and start wars over and over again. At first we went back and saved your souls and left you to chart your own destiny, but your kind is the barbarian. And a violent species. You continue the same way. Despite all you had done, we tried to save you one last time. We took a mother's son to heaven and educated him. We taught him the meaning of life and creation. When we sent him back to educator species, you chose to punish him. We gave you the fruits of life. You left him to rot.
Meeting him inside his spaceship.

The Engineer towered over the visitor, his alabaster skin gleaming in the dim, biomechanical light of the spaceship’s interior.
His massive hand, poised in the air, trembled with restrained fury as he prepared to strike. The visitor's eyes widened in fear, the Engineer’s presence overwhelming in its ancient and godlike intensity.
But just as the Engineer’s hand began to descend, he hesitated. His cold, expressionless face contorted with the effort of forming human words. In a guttural, broken voice, as if the language itself was foreign to his very nature, he growled, “I… know you.”
