Keys: Encanto
Encanto is an American animated musical fantasy comedy drama film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. It was released on November 24, 2021 in the United States, and is the 60th animated feature in the Disney Animated Canon. Directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, the film was written by Bush and Charise Castro Smith. Taking place in the mountains of Colombia, the film centers on the Madrigals, a multigenerational family whose members were each granted magical gifts—with the exception of one, Mirabel. The second animated Disney film released in 2021 (preceded by Raya and the Last Dragon), Encanto features original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, whose soundtrack received widespread acclaim and topped the US Billboard 200 in 2022. A massive critical success (earning the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature among other accolades), the film went on to become the highest-grossing animated feature of 2021. Synopsis Encanto tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal—every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.[1] Plot While escaping her home from armed conflict, a young woman named Alma Madrigal loses her husband, Pedro, but saves her three infant triplet children, Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno. Through a miracle, a candle Alma held onto was imbued with magic and creates a sentient "Casita" for the Madrigals to live in, and provide a safe haven for the refugees, who proceed to build a town called Encanto. Encanto grows under the Casita's protection, and the magic imbues the Madrigal family — for which Alma becomes better known as "Abuela" — with a family of superhuman abilities dubbed "gifts". It is around the nature of the magic's involvement with gifts, however, that Bruno, along with Julieta's youngest daughter, Mirabel, become excluded. Bruno and his gift of precognition are vilified due to the unpredictable nature of his visions, which led Bruno to disappear one day. Mirabel, though, has no gift at all: though not as ostracized as Bruno, she is still treated differently by most of her family ("The Family Madrigal"). On the day Antonio, Pepa's youngest son, is to receive a gift, Mirabel gives Antonio the courage to go through with the ceremony ("Colombia, Mi Encanto"). Antonio gains the ability to speak with animals and the whole town celebrates while Mirabel, though happy for him, remains saddened for the lack of her own gift and wishes to seen equally ("Waiting on a Miracle"). That night, Mirabel suddenly sees cracks forming around the house and the candle flickering, but when she tries to show everyone, everything is back to normal, leading the family to further doubt her ("En Barranquilla Me Quedo"). She later learns that Alma does indeed believe her and decides to save the magic. After asking her cousin, Dolores, who can hear everything, she confronts her older sister, Luisa, who has super strength. Mirabel gets her to confess that she feels overburdened by the family ("Surface Pressure") and reveals that when Mirabel saw the cracks, she felt weaker. Luisa suggests that Mirabel should go to Bruno's old room, recalling that he once had a vision about the family's magic. Mirabel enters to see that it is a giant sand-filled cave and discovers a vision that supposedly shows Mirabel being the cause of the house cracking apart. Upon leaving, Luisa reveals that her strength is fading and Alma tells Mirabel not to talk to Luisa, especially her perfect oldest sister, Isabela, who can make flowers appear, as she is to be engaged that evening to Mariano, a local man. The family overhears Mirabel asking about Bruno and explains to her how his predictions often caused trouble ("We Don't Talk About Bruno"), such as how his vision about rain led to Pepa, whose mood controls the weather, being married in a hurricane. Dolores then overhears Mirabel talking with her father about Bruno's prediction. The dinner and the proposal are soon ruined as Dolores is unable to keep Bruno's vision a secret, with the house once again beginning to crack and everyone's powers beginning to falter. The family (mostly Alma, Pepa, and Isabela) blames Mirabel, despite her pleading that she had nothing to do with the incident. That night with the Guzmáns, Mirabel notices some rats taking the pieces of Bruno's vision and discovers a hidden passage in the walls behind a painting, finding a cloaked figure that she chases. When she falls through the floor, the figure saves her (though it is then revealed the hole is not very deep), revealing himself as Bruno. He never actually left and instead hid within the walls as he still cares about his family. Mirabel eventually convinces him to have another prediction. Antonio then shows up and offers his room for them to use, as the rats informed him of everything. Mirabel and Bruno's vision starts the same as before, but Mirabel notices a butterfly. They follow it and it eventually leads to them finding a solution that involves Mirabel having to hug it out with Isabela. Mirabel is not pleased with the situation, but Bruno tells her that she, not Isabela, will ultimately decide the Casita's fate before going back into hiding. Mirabel decides to apologize to Isabela for ruining the engagement dinner. After a brief argument, Isabela confess that she felt burdened by being perfect all the time and that she never wanted to marry Mariano and was only doing so for the family. This causes Isabela to embrace her true self by making more wild, exotic, and carnivorous plants and both sisters share a genuine hug (fulfilling Bruno's vision), seemingly healing the house and magic ("What Else Can I Do?"). Alma worriedly discovers what has been happening and blames Mirabel of hurting their family and the miracle all because she was rejected a gift. Finally fed up with her mistreatment, a tearful Mirabel angrily snaps at her for always seeing her as a disappointment and for deeming no one good enough for her, going as far as to say that Bruno left because she only saw the worst in him and that she (Alma) is the reason the miracle is dying, which utterly horrifies Alma. At that moment, the house begins to break apart; as it tries to get everyone out to safety, Isabela, Camilo, and the rest of the family lose their gifts as the magic quickly fades. Mirabel stays behind to try and retrieve the candle, but it goes out by the time she gets it. The Casita uses its remaining magic to shield her from its collapse, and the Madrigals are all left homeless and powerless by the disaster. Heartbroken and guilt-ridden, Mirabel leaves the Encanto and runs away to the river and releases stress, where a remorseful Alma soon finds her. Alma mentions that the river is where Pedro perished to the soldiers and admits that everything was indeed her fault. She sees that she forgot that what made everyone special was that they were a family ("Dos Oruguitas"), and Mirabel recognizes the burdens Alma carried and never healed from it. Now understanding each other better, Alma and Mirabel reconcile and share a hug after 10 years (truly fulfilling Bruno's vision) before Bruno appears, attempting to take the blame for what happened to the house. Bruno reconciles with Alma and the rest of the family (admitting to Pepa that him mentioning rain on her wedding day was not actually a prediction, just him joking about how much she was sweating), and they all decide to fix the house together. The entire village soon arrives to help as thanks for all the family has done for them ("All of You"). After completing the house, Mirabel adds the doorknob her family made just for her to the front door, which causes the house to spring back to life, and the magic returns. The citizens of the town come to see Casita alive again, Dolores and Mariano start a relationship (since it was revealed that she always had a crush on him), and the Madrigals get their gifts back, but instead of using the gifts to be perfect, they are finally able to use them the way they want. Bruno is welcomed back to the family and they all get together for a family picture, this time with all the members, including Mirabel and Bruno ("Colombia, Mi Encanto Reprise").

Young Alma breaks down after witnessing her husband's death. At an undefined point in time in her past, Alma met a man named Pedro during a celebration for Day of the Little Candles in their village,[2] where they fell in love and eventually got married a short time later. Much to her delight, Alma got pregnant and one day gave birth to triplets Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno. But on the very day of the triplets' birth, a conflict called the Thousand Days' War struck her town. Alma and Pedro were forced to leave her home with their family.[3] They escaped from their village along with some other citizens and left in search of a new home, but as they crossed through a river in the valley, the conquerors caught up with them. During the conflict that same day, Pedro said goodbye to Alma and sacrificed himself to the Soldiers who were chasing after the escaping villagers, allowing her and her children to escape but at the cost of her husband's life.[4][5] Having witnessed Pedro's death, Alma was heartbroken and unable to run when the conquistadors closed in on her. In her despair and pain, Alma prayed for a miracle and was immediately granted one. Magic was born from Alma's candle, and the magic created the Encanto where Alma and the rest of the citizens who escaped with her could live in peace. The miracle also vanquishing the invading army, created a mountain range to protect the Encanto, and also granted Alma a sentient house for her and her family to live in. Losing everything in the span of one night, Alma never had time to properly process her pain and mourn as she had to raise her infant children alone and lead the refugees from her village. The responsibility that was imposed on her as guardian of the miracle made her a hardened woman and since the day she lost her husband she has been afraid of losing her home and family again. When Alma's children turned five, they each got their own unique magical gifts accompanied by their new room. Alma had her family use their magic to help the community as a way of paying back the miracle, believing that proving themselves worthy of the magic they were given would preserve it. Over time, Alma's relationship with her son would be become strenuous due the problems of his gift of foresight. Eventually, her daughters fell in love and married. Pepa met a man named Félix with a cheerful personality with whom Alma got along with from the beginning and quickly accepted him as part of the family while Julieta met a man named Agustín, whom her mother was skeptical that would fall in love with Julieta since he was probably not Alma's first choice to marry her daughter, but Julieta loved Agustín so much that they eventually got married and he became part of the family.[6] To her surprise and delight, over the years Alma's daughters had children of their own, who would also receive gifts as their mothers and uncle had, and she became the grandmother of Isabela, Dolores, Luisa, Camilo, Mirabel, and Antonio, who all refer her as Abuela. When it came time for Mirabel's ceremony, she reached for her door and touched the door knob, instead of getting a magical gift and opening the way to her new room like her sisters and cousins, Mirabel didn't get a gift and the door disappeared. Alma, fearful for the family's magic, asked Bruno to look into the future to see what this meant, as no Madrigal child had ever been denied a gift before. However, Bruno would never tell Alma about what he saw and disappeared without saying anything. Alma never knew why her son abandoned the family, blaming Mirabel for Bruno's disappearance and pushing her away. Fearful that Mirabel's lack of a gift meant the family had not proven themselves worthy of the miracle, Alma increased the family's efforts to serve the community. Although she meant well, Alma inadvertently put too much pressure on her family. As a result, her relationship with her daughters became strained due to their constant disagreements while some of her grandchildren grew up with some emotional trauma trying to fulfill her expectations and desires. Official Description Though she may have been alone, Abuela Alma's unwavering faith would create the magical encanto where the Madrigals call home. As the family matriarch, Abuela Alma's steely strength and single-minded determination to protect her family haven't wavered in 50 years since she lost her husband.[7]Alma is the matriarch of the Madrigal family. Her steadfast determination and unwavering hope led her to the magical Encanto, where she raised triplets Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno. To her surprise and delight, each of her children was blessed with a magical gift upon their 5th birthday, and the tradition continued with each of their children, except for Mirabel. Abuela values the gifts given to each of her family members, ensuring that they are used to benefit and protect their community, and to honor the sacrifice of Abuelo Pedro.[8] Development As with the rest of the Madrigal family, Alma was designed to reflect "family archetypes that are immediately relatable".[9] The studio was initially going to make Agustín as the patriarch of the family, but this was changed due to a field guide on Colombia telling the studio that the local communities are matriarchal, which led to the creation of Alma as the matriarch. During the creation process, Alma originally had hair that transformed into a river that flowed for miles, and the family would have had to follow it in order to connect to her emotionally, but this was discarded as it didn't fit the story correctly. She originated from the beginning as a severe and complicated person, someone that has to always look out for the well-being of her family and the town, with a painful connection to the past. To create her appearance, Alma's costume design and color palette had to feel much more subdued than the other characters in order to represent her stern and rigid personality.[10] María Cecilia Botero, Alma's voice actor, describes her character: "Abuela doesn't have a gift. She's the one… that keeps the family together… I think I am, too, in my family. So it was kind of myself."[11] Personality
Alma being more affectionate with Isabela than with any of her other grandchildren. As the matriarch of the Madrigal Family, Alma is dedicated to doing what in her eyes is best for her family and initially hoists expectations on her children and grandchildren in how they use their gifts to help the community, often taking the form of a demand for perfection. Due to her desire for perfectionism, Alma has a certain favoritism towards some members of her family without realizing the damage and insecurity it causes to other members of the family. Out of all her grandchildren, she favors her oldest granddaughter and golden child Isabela; this doting placing a lot of pressure on her while concurrently making her sisters and cousins feel inadequate living in her shadow, causing mutual resentment between her and some of them. As far as sons-in-law go, Alma preferred Félix over Agustín, due to not approving of the latter nor in him marrying Julieta, partly because she judged him harshly for his clumsiness and unwillingness to understand why her daughter chose him. Alma's expectations and desires for perfection also extended to her own children, keeping a tight grip on the to make them perfect. Unintentionally, Alma is quite neglectful with Pepa due to the problems of her gift. Alma not only ignores her when she needs help, she also often negatively criticizes her daughter for her emotional tirades and often pesters Pepa to keep her emotions under control instead of supporting her properly.
Alma having a rare moment of vulnerability and weakness. Alma tries to be patient and understanding, but from her point of view, she feels some should just step aside and do nothing without her express approval. As a result, she is very controlling and denies there is anything wrong, assuring her neighbors that all is well and that there is nothing to fear, even when Casa Madrigal is cracking all around her and the townspeople are nervous. But the truth is, Alma knows that her home and perhaps even her family is in danger, as she privately revealed to herself, as Alma spoke as though she were speaking with her late husband, Pedro, revealing that Alma is afraid for her home, her family, and losing everything as they did before, and she cannot bear to go through that again, and she prays to her Pedro to help her. This displays Alma's vulnerability that she is too afraid to reveal even to her family and that Alma feels the burden of trying to preserve her family, her community and their miracle and their Encanto, and explains why she does everything she can to protect them. Unfortunately, this fear of losing everything again, often causes her to assume the worst in a situation or even in others, including her own family.[12] Alma would particularly doubt her only son, Bruno, since his often negative visions that tended to cause trouble lead her to believe he didn't care about their family after he left, and her granddaughter, Mirabel, as being the only member without a gift made Alma look down on her and exclude her from family activities at best or, upon seeing Bruno's vision, fear her destroying the magic at worst.
Alma shocked when Mirabel points to her as the true cause of the miracle dying. When she sees how her expectations of her family are unraveling because of Mirabel, Alma, misinterpreting her attempts to help as jeopardizing the magic according to Bruno's vision, jumps to conclusions without hearing her out and unfairly blames her for everything, accusing her of hurting the family out of jealousy for not being given a gift. Alma further lashes out at Mirabel as she reveals she blames her for Bruno's disappearance, as well as getting angry when Isabela tarnishing her perfect image by being herself, ruining her engagement with Mariano, and Luisa begins to lose her super strength, showing that Alma views them no different from the way she views Mirabel. Finally fed up with this treatment, Mirabel angrily snaps at Alma and stands up for the family, stating that no matter how hard any of them tries, magic or not, none of them will ever be good enough for her or her expectations, and that Bruno actually left because she only saw the worst in him. When Mirabel goes as far as to say that Alma is causing the miracle to fade, the older woman, initially denying this, can only be silent and shocked at these words before the Casita collapses as a result of their heated fight. Taking in the destruction of their home, Mirabel's words, and half of her grandchildren putting themselves in jeopardy to save the candle would cause Alma to realize the pressure and even unintentional misery she had been subjecting her family to.
Broken from having lost so much, Alma abandons her former joy and hope. In a sincere heart-to-heart with Mirabel by the river where her husband perished, Alma reveals more insight in their family beginnings. In the memories of her youth, Alma was once a cheerful young woman full of life who, after falling in love with Pedro, had hopes for a better future. But when her husband sacrificed his life to buy time for his family, friends, and neighbors to escape from the marauders who were after them after having to leave their home, Alma was left devastated and broken. Losing the love of her life, her home, and everything she knew and loved in the span of a night traumatized Alma so much that she swore it would never happen again, determined to preserve what had given them a fresh start. But over time, she lost sight of what truly mattered, unconsciously and ironically taking their miracle for granted, and forgot who it was for, and what made their family so special was not the magic but the fact that, in spite of tragedy, they are a family. It was because of this, that Alma was constantly looking outwards for a problem or even a threat similar to the soldiers to all she held dear, that she never thought to look inward until it was too late, which is when she finally realized her family had been broken because of her and why she never considered that her well-intentioned actions were the problem.
After realizing her mistakes, Alma sincerely and lovingly apologizes to her family. Now understanding the pain and loss Alma had never fully healed from, along with the burden she had long carried, Mirabel assures her that it is because of her that they were saved, that they were granted a miracle, that they are a family and nothing is so broken that they could not fix together. Touched by these words, Alma finally realizes, after asking Pedro for help, that Mirabel was the answer to her prayers and they reconcile. Immediately following this, Alma also reconciles with her lost son when he suddenly appeared to confront her after a decade before she warmly hugs and kisses him while calling him "Brunito", happy to have him back despite previously having a low opinion of him for leaving their family. Alma then becomes a happier and warmer person than she was before, freeing herself from her dark past. The first thing Alma does after realizing her past mistakes and returning to the ruins of the Casita, is to affectionately treat her daughters before bringing Bruno back into the family. Alma reconciles with the rest of her family, apologizing for how she held on too tight out of fear she would lose them all as well, but now understands that they alone are the true miracle, not the gift of magic itself. She also happily works alongside her family and community as they rebuild the Casita, helping to strengthen the bonds of the family to become stronger than ever and causing the magic to be restored later in the Encanto. Physical appearance
Alma as an old lady (left side) and Alma as a young woman (right side). Abuela Alma is a 75-year-old elderly woman with grey hair with streaks of black in it. She has brown eyes and very few wrinkles. She wears a long maroon/magenta dress with butterflies (symbolizing the moment the Encanto was created) and streaks embroidered on it and mountain designs at the bottom of he dress, orange teardrop-shaped circles on her collar, and flower-like symbols on certain parts of her clothing like ones that appear slightly above her elbows (which all represent the candle), a chatelaine belt with a key and two pocket watches, and black high heels. Alma also has small pearl earrings, which almost show a slight glint of her younger happier self. She initially wore a dark black mourning shawl on special occasions, like a Madrigal child's gift ceremony or Isabela's proposal dinner, but stopped wearing it after making peace with her past. When Alma was younger, she was slightly taller with a slim build and had a more smiley and cheerful appearance, complete with dark brown middle swept bangs and her hair braided on both sides with red bows tying the ends of both braids which are both over the front of her shoulders. She also has a white shirt with flowers and a frilly white collar that all the Madrigal women excluding Julieta have, with an ankle indigo-blue skirt with black shoes. During the escape from her village, she wore a magenta shawl. Powers and abilities Abuela Alma doesn't possess any particular gift, due to being the one who found the miracle that blessed the Madrigal family in the first place. Instead, she is in charge of all magic of the family. She takes care of the magical candle that gives the family their magical gifts, although she herself has no individual gift, as she merely makes sure the family magic is used carefully. Becoming the leader of the Encanto since she was very young, Alma has leadership skills as she leads an entire village by herself and directs most of the activities that occur in the Encanto such as the construction of various houses or different events. Being the person with the most authority in the Encanto, her family and the entire town of Encanto, turn to her in moments of uncertainty and communal anxiety. Like Mirabel, she also has a stronger affinity with the Casita than most of her family; Alma communicates with the house like it is a real person, and Casita responds to her prompts. Appearances Encanto
Alma helping and working alongside the townspeople. Alma first appears telling a five-year-old Mirabel the story of how their family was blessed with magic and how the Miracle Candle will grant her a magical gift during her birthday. When it comes time for her granddaughter's gift ceremony, she asks Alma what she thinks her gift will be, to which Alma responds that Mirabel is a wonder and whatever gift she gets will be just as special as her. In the present, Alma is introduced leaving her room happy that it is her youngest grandson Antonio's fifth birthday, and he's expected to get his magical gift by the end of the day. Before going to town, she helps Antonio with his gift ceremony outfit for the special day. In "The Family Madrigal", while she helps with the construction of a house, Alma says with faith that The Madrigals swore to help those around them to earn the miracle that blessed their family and keep the miracle burning in each new generation. Alma also gives Isabela a kiss on the cheek and watching with pride as her oldest granddaughter grows different roses in town.
Alma prevents Mirabel from helping at Antonio's ceremony. She finally returned to Casa Madrigal and tells the family that it's time to get ready for Antonio's ceremony. When Mirabel was finishing telling the kids in town about the family, Alma visibly confused at the Casita's entrance, asked her what she was doing. Mirabel explains she was telling the Town Kids about the family, and when Alejandra says the Mirabel was about to tell them about her gift, Alma walks away awkwardly after Dolores tells the kids that Mirabel didn't get one. While preparing Antonio's gift ceremony, Alma saw her grandson Camilo leaning lazily against a banister and instructed him to help a townsperson named José with a banner over Antonio's door and she also tells Luisa to put the piano on the upper floor of the house. She can later be heard telling her family to clean their rooms saying that she didn't care how big they were. Alma catches Mirabel trying to decorate the outside of the rooms in the house, and although she acknowledges that Mirabel wants to help, she tells her that the best way for Mirabel to help would be to step aside and let the other members of the family do what they do best, much to her frustration.
Alma announces during the ceremony that Antonio received a magical gift. Suddenly a nervous Pepa appears walking through the hallways of the house and Alma alerts her that she has a cloud hanging over her head, but her daughter responds angrily that she can't find Antonio. As their conversation is over, Alma runs into Julieta on the stairs, who tells her to be nice to Mirabel because she knows Antonio's gift ceremony was going to be difficult because Mirabel's own gift ceremony didn't turn out well. Alma tells her that if Antonio's gift ceremony doesn't go well, it's going to be a difficult night for everyone. During the ceremony, Alma gives a brief speech about how the people of the Encanto were blessed in their time of greatest need with a miracle that blessed the Madrigal Family with a Miracle Candle, happy that it is Antonio's turn to receive his magical gift and she goes up the stairs to wait for him next to his new door. When her grandson approaches her and touches the candle, Alma asks him if he will use his gift to strengthen the community. He nods his head and approaches his door, and Alma waits with bated breath as Antonio reaches for his door knob. Antonio successfully receives a gift much Alma's relief as she announces to the crowd that the family has a new gift.
Alma congratulating Antonio on receiving his new gift. She along with the rest of the family and the townspeople are amazed as Antonio's room turns out to be a rainforest and he has fun with his new animal friends. After he rode his new jaguar, Alma proudly approaches Antonio to congratulate him for receiving a power as special as him, gathering the entire family, except Mirabel, in joy for a family photo. During the celebration party, Alma happily watches Antonio having fun and she dances with Félix for a few moments. While everyone celebrates, Alma is shocked when Mirabel runs into the room announcing that the Casita was in danger. Alma wants Mirabel to show her, and she led everyone outside to show them that the house was cracking, however the cracks suddenly disappeared. Mirabel tried explaining to Alma what she saw, and Alma cuts her off and announces to everyone that the magic was strong and so were the drinks, and everyone goes back to celebrating. Later that night however, Alma talks to a picture of her deceased husband Pedro while looking out of her window. She expresses concern about the state of the magic and concern for what will happen to the home.
Alma happy at the idea of Mariano and Isabela's proposal that same night. The following morning, Alma gathers everyone around for breakfast, and states that they are all grateful for Antonio's new gift. As she sits down she nearly sits on Antonio's animals. Antonio tells Alma that he asked them to warm up her seat, and she thanks him and she shoos the animals away saying that she's sure they can find a way to put his blessings to good use. While Alma continues talking, Mirabel starts shouting, and Alma has Casita move Mirabel's seat from next to Luisa, to next to her. Alma tells everyone that they can't take the miracle for granted and that they will work twice as hard. When Mirabel tries getting up from her seat, Alma tells her to stop and has the Casita push the chair back in. Alma announces that she spoke to the Guzmáns about Mariano's proposal to Isabela and asks her granddaughter Dolores for a date on the proposal. Alma's very happy when Dolores says that Mariano was planning on proposing that same night and that he wanted five children, which makes Isabela sprout nervous flowers on her head. While removing an imperfect flower from Isabela's head, Alma comments that the pair would bring a new generation of "magical blessings" and make both families stronger. Alma then proceeded to tell the family that the community was counting on them before dismissing everyone from the table.
Alma looking at the Miracle Candle when acting strange. In "Surface Pressure", Luisa reveals that she is under constant stress of meeting others' expectations of her and expresses her fears of not carrying the pressure despite being super strong, at one point she is on the tightrope carrying weights with a magenta background, the color of Alma's clothes. Later that morning, Alma and Isabela are walking hand-in-hand as Alma tells Isabela that she believes her and Mariano are a perfect match, unaware of Isabela's discomfort at the proposal. As Mirabel finds different pieces of a Bruno's vision, Alma cleans different flower petals in the halls of the house before turning to look at the miracle candle as it acts strangely. Sometime after that, when Mirabel emerges from Bruno's room after having found pieces of his vision, Alma wants to know where she was coming from in a hurry. Before Mirabel could say anything, Luisa comes into the house and frantically yells at Alma that she was losing her gift. During her explanation, Luisa mentions to Alma how she and Mirabel talked about how she carried too much but when she tried to return to her duties she realized that her powers disappeared.
Alma happy with the union between Isabela and Mariano. When Luisa runs away crying, instead of following her to comfort her, a concerned Alma asks Mirabel what exactly did she say to Luisa, but she denies having said anything. Before leaving the Casa Madrigal, she looks at her pocket watch to realize that the marriage proposal dinner is about to begin. Alma mentions to Mirabel that she has to go get the Guzmáns for Mariano and Isabela's engagement and instructs her to stay away from Luisa until she can talk to her because they can't have any more problems, telling Mirabel to stop doing whatever she's doing. In "We Don't Talk About Bruno", when most of the Madrigals are setting the table for dinner, Alma was escorting Señora Guzmán and Mariano to the Casita while announcing Mariano's arrival. When the Guzmáns arrive at the house, Alma announces to everyone that it's time to eat dinner. Before everyone eats, Alma comments that the union between the Guzmáns and The Madrigals will be very good for the Encanto. Señora Guzmán makes a joke about hoping that the night goes well and that it doesn't turn out to be a horrible disaster, making Alma toast to a perfect night.
Alma discovering Bruno's vision about the miracle's death and the Casita. As the night progresses, without Alma noticing, her family members learn of Bruno's vision of the imminent destruction of the Casa Madrigal and death of the miracle. Alma tries to keep Señora Guzmán happy when some family members start to freak out due to the vision, such as Dolores acting strange, Camilo erratically shapeshifting before his face distorts and his eyes look in different directions before he fixes it, Félix spitting out his water on Mariano and Pepa creating a storm cloud, which Alma tries to tell her to get rid of. Alma watches as Mariano tries to propose to Isabela before everything starts to go wrong, from Luisa crying over the loss of her super strength to Dolores screaming that everyone is doomed. The dinner begins to get out of hand with the spread of Bruno's vision about the magic fading and Pepa begins to form a storm cloud. When Mirabel, while trying to grab the vision that Antonio's animals had assembled, accidentally slides it to Alma and is horrified by what she sees. Due to Pepa's storm clouds, it finally starts to rain, drenching everyone present and opening the doors of the Casita to reveal the townspeople watching as the proposal dinner had been ruined, much to Alma's chagrin.
Alma worried about the Casa Madrigal and the miracle. When everyone leaves the dining room, Alma chases after Señora Guzmán and Mariano to try to get them to stay. The townspeople see the Guzmáns running out of the Casa Madrigal and are scared when several cracks begin to appear around the house representing that the miracle is disappearing, with Alma proclaiming that they are the Madrigals and that the magic is strong so everything will be well, before slamming the door shut and angrily shouts for Mirabel. Later the failed dinner, Alma reprimands Agustín for keeping Bruno's vision to himself, saying that he should've thought of the family and told her as soon as he saw it. Agustín, however, angrily shoots back that he was thinking of his daughter. Before she can say anything, Alma notices that Pepa is creating a mini snowfall and tells her to calm down, which her daughter fiercely responds she's trying her best, with Felix backing her, and she's just fortunate that she isn't creating a hurricane. Julieta tells Alma that she's always been too hard on Mirabel, but Alma ignores her, telling them they must protect their home, going on to say that they cannot lose their home. When the townspeople come to the Casita telling her that people are worried about the magic, Alma goes into town, but before she leaves, she tells her family that they need to find Mirabel because she was in Bruno's vision for a reason.
Alma watches Isabela growing different plants while trying to talk to the Guzman family. In town, Alma stops by the Guzmáns' house and tries to make amends for the ruined proposal dinner and save the engagement. However, during "What Else Can I Do?", while Isabela is growing a series of exotic plants and expressing her true self, she accidentally breaks Mariano's nose a second time. While Señora Guzman is concerned for Mariano's well-being, Alma is shocked by the chaos Isabela is causing at the Encanto. When she returns home, Alma is visibly angry and demands to know what is going on. While Isabela is frightened by her presence, Mirabel, quite excited, tries to tell Alma that she knew how to save the miracle. Mirabel tries to tell Alma that Isabela wasn't happy, and Alma says it's clear that Isabela's unhappy because Mirabel ruined her proposal. Alma gets increasingly more agitated as Mirabel tries to explain what she had been doing and how she was going to save the miracle, but Alma cuts her off and tells her that she needs to stop. As Isabela, Luisa, Julieta, Agustín and later the rest of the family watch from a distance, Alma berates Mirabel and proceeds to blame her for all the family's problems, such as the house cracking, Bruno leaving, Luisa losing her powers and Isabela being out of control. She tells Mirabel that while it's not understood why she wasn't given a gift, it wasn't an excuse for her to hurt the family.
Alma arguing with Mirabel as she proceeds to blame her for the family's problems. Mirabel, after a moment of hurt and fed up with this treatment, tells Alma that she will never be good enough for her, no matter how hard she tries. When Mirabel looks at her sisters, she realizes that no one will ever be good enough for Alma and defends Luisa and Isabela by saying they will never be strong enough or perfect enough. Reaching her breaking point, she states what really drove Bruno was that Alma only saw the worst in him, but Alma responds that Bruno didn't care about the family. Mirabel insists everybody loves the family, accusing Alma as both the one who didn't care and breaking their home. Angered by her granddaughter's words, enraged Alma begins to raise her voice and yells at her. But before she can finish her sentence, Mirabel points to her as the true cause of the miracle dying, which causes Alma to become horrified and shocked, realizing that she is right. The heated fight creates a fissure that splits one of the nearby mountains of the range that protects the Encanto, causing the ground beneath them starts cracking and the Casa Madrigal starts falling apart as the candle starts fading fast. As Pepa and Félix scream in horror as they realize the Miracle Candle is in danger, Alma can only watch helplessly as the candle begins to go out as half of her grandchildren risk their lives to save the miracle.
Alma heartbroken to see how her ideals tore her family apart. As the Casa Madrigal starts collapsing more and more, everybody except for Mirabel is thrown out and Alma is caught by Luisa before she hits the ground. After the Casita is destroyed and the Miracle Candle dies along with the magic, while Camilo and Antonio mourn the loss of their home and the adults make sure their children are safe, Alma is shocked by the destruction of the house to the point of that she has to be cared for by Dolores, who sits her on a small piece of debris to calm her down. When her daughter Julieta noticed Mirabel went missing, the family spread out to search for her. The next morning, Alma finds a tearful Mirabel in the valley, sitting next to the river that she and Pedro had crossed while escaping from The Soldiers fifty years earlier. While releasing stress, Mirabel apologizes and says that she never wanted to hurt the family, she just wanted to prove herself that she's worthy, even though she doesn't have a gift. Seeing how saddened Mirabel was, Alma sat down next to her and told her that she never thought she would be able to return to the river, since it's where Pedro died and where they were given the miracle.
Alma remembering the happy moments of her life with Pedro before everything changed. During the "Dos Oruguitas" sequence, Alma reveals more about her past, how she made a life with Pedro and the full origin of the miracle. She then explains that she thought that she and Pedro would have a different life together and she would be a different person. Gaining a miracle through her husband's sacrifice, a second chance that she was so afraid to lose that she ultimately lost sight of the people their miracle was for⁏ the family. Alma apologizes to Mirabel and tells her that she never hurt their family, realizing their fractured state is because her heart never healed from the trauma she went through. Mirabel takes Alma's hands in hers and acknowledges the loss and sorrow that Alma experienced as a young woman, and understands that Alma didn't want it to happen again. She proceeds to tell Alma that they were saved because of her, they were a family because of her and they were given a miracle because of her, and then assured her that nothing is so broken that they cannot fix together. Touched by Mirabel's words, Alma tells her that she asked Pedro for help and he sent her Mirabel and the two of them reconcile and hug after ten years since Mirabel's failed ceremony while butterflies flies around them.
Alma runs to hug Bruno, showing that she still loves him after his disappearance. Just as they finish their embrace and emerge from the river, Bruno comes riding in on a horse, confronting Alma after years of hiding. As he rambles before simply saying all Mirabel wanted to do was help, Alma is shocked when she sees Bruno after ten years. As Bruno continues talking and prepares to argue with her, Alma rushes to her son and gives him a hug, much to his confusion. She gives him a kiss on the cheek and grabs his hand and pulls him onto the horse and all three of them ride on horseback to the Encanto. When they get back to the Encanto and reunite with the rest of the family in the ruins of the Casita, during "All of You" Alma walks up to her surprised daughters and treats them lovingly while apologizing for holding onto the magic too tight, fearing she would lose them too after losing Pedro, and says the miracle isn't magic they possess, rather simply themselves, as she guides a timid Bruno to rejoin the family when he is afraid to do so. Alma watches with joy as the triplets are reunited after a decade and as some of her grandchildren are confused or happy by Bruno's presence.
Alma apologizes to her family for the mistakes she made. With the family all together, everyone came together to fix the Casa Madrigal and the entire town also pitched in as thanks for all the Madrigals had done for them, including Mariano and Señora Guzman, much to Alma's delight. When helping to rebuild the Casita, Alma can be seen working on some blueprints for the house alongside Mirabel and Camilo. After completing the house, Alma guided Mirabel to Casita's entrance to add a doorknob the family made just for her to the front door, which to her surprise, causing a new source of magic to be born that brings Casita back to life and returning the gifts of the Madrigals, but also making a new front door with all the Madrigals carved into it, including those who married into the family, Félix and Agustín. As they enter the house, Alma happily watches as her family members recover their powers and begin to be themselves. The Madrigals then celebrated the returned of their home and gifts with a family picture. As they posed for the photo and everyone shouting "La Familia Madrigal", Casita unexpectedly crushed the entire family, creating an imperfect family image.

Julieta Madrigal is a supporting character in Disney's 2021 animated feature film Encanto. She is the eldest daughter of Alma and Pedro and the mother of Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel, whom she parented alongside her husband, Agustín. A nurturing caretaker, Julieta was gifted with the power to cook healing foods. Background Julieta is one of the three triplet children born to Alma and Pedro, with her brother, Bruno and her sister, Pepa. When she was just born, their home was attacked by soldiers and her family was forced to flee. After her father's death, a miracle was created that blessed the family with an enchanted house and protection from the raiders. Growing up, Julieta was willing to help her mother take care of her family from a very young age because her father had died and Alma had no one else to help her. When she was five years old, Julieta and her two siblings opened their magical doors in the house, revealing their powers. She gained the ability to heal anyone by the use of food. Compared to other members of her family, Julieta is the only Madrigal child who has no problems with her gift since her healing power is easy to control and she enjoys helping others, to the point of knowing the favorite food of most of the people in the Encanto.[3] Thanks to her healing gift, Julieta became the community's healer, helping other people when they have different wounds or injuries. Some time later she met a man named Agustín who constantly needed to be healed because he was accident-prone. Although Alma was skeptical that Agustín and Julieta would fall in love since he was probably not Alma's first choice to marry her daughter, Julieta loved Agustín so much that the two eventually married and they had three daughters: Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel.[4] Julieta besides becoming Félix's sister-in-law after Pepa married him, she also became the maternal aunt of Dolores, Camilo and Antonio. Unlike majority of the Encanto villagers or her own family, Julieta never spoke ill of Bruno after he left and lamented his absence. After a decade of separation, Julieta finally reunites with her brother again after the fall of the Casa Madrigal, where she expresses great joy in seeing him again and hugs him happily together with Pepa. Official Description Julieta is warm and nurturing. As the town doctor, she uses her magical powers to heal others through food.[5]Julieta, one of Alma's triplets, was blessed with the power to heal. Radiating warmth and kindness, she wields no magic wand, however her magic is found in the food she lovingly prepares for all who need it.[6] Development As with the rest of the Madrigal family, Julieta was designed to reflect "family archetypes that are immediately relatable".[7] The studio initially created Julieta with a more antagonistic role in the film and thus would have a complicated relationship with Mirabel, opposed to the caring and empathic Julieta in the final production.[8] Director Jared Bush was inspired by his own mother to create Julieta's personality and her loving relationship with her kids. During the creation process, Julieta also was to have the ability to control the weather, but since Julieta had a maternal personality, this power was instead given to Pepa and Julieta obtained the power to heal others (which was originally going to belong to Dolores).[9] Angie Cepeda, Julieta's voice actress, describes her character as being relatable to her: "Julieta's very kind, she's warm. I really fell in love with her. She cares so much about her family and for the people in her community. She has this gift and she heals people with the food that she cooks. She does that for all who need it. Julieta has this special relationship with Mirabel. She knows how Mirabel feels about not having a gift and the fact that she feels that Mirabel doesn't belong and she's always there for her."[10] Personality
Julieta enjoying using her gift to heal and cure the wounds of the townsfolk. Due to her magical gift of healing others with her cooking, Julieta is very nurturing to those she treats for their injuries or illnesses. She provides nourishment and healing to others (especially her accident-prone husband). Since she was always willing to help her mother Alma take care of her family since she was just a child, because her father had died after she was born, Julieta is a maternal, nurturing, and calm woman. Julieta is very supportive and, like her sister Pepa and her brother-in-law Félix, she is very affectionate with the youngest members of the family. She always prioritizes the welfare and needs of her family over her own. Julieta has a great deal of love for her family and she does her best to take care of them when they need it. But Julieta not only cares just about her family, but also about the people of the village. She enjoys helping the townspeople with her gift and making people smile with her food. Of all The Madrigals, Julieta seems to have the fewest issues with her gift. She gives the appearance of having it the most together and she's a good caretaker for the town, as she does her job with warmth and professionalism that is also very befitting of her station. Despite that, there are also days when Julieta can get tired of constantly cooking every day, but she is ready to help when someone needs it.
Julieta lovingly trying to encourage her daughter. According to Agustín, Julieta is equal to Mirabel when it comes to supporting others. She is shown to also have a forgiving heart, easily reconciling with her mother when Alma sincerely apologize to her and the rest of the family for her past mistakes. Thanks to her personality, Julieta is close to several members of her family and is trusted by others. She showers Mirabel with kisses, praises, and compliments to the point it embarrasses her daughter. She is caring and very supportive of Mirabel, because she understands how hard it is for her to be the only ordinary member of a magical family. Julieta can also calm Agustín when he is angry and provides a voice of reason and comfort to the more emotional family members like Bruno or Camilo. Julieta is by far the most sensible and patient member of the family. Unlike her sister, Julieta never lets her temper get the better of her and never shows anger or rage even in times of stress. When the family learns of Bruno's vision and magic's imminent death at dinner with the Guzmáns, while she was shocked like the others, she is the only one who doesn't lose her composure or jump to any conclusions.
Julieta confronts Alma a second time about her harsh attitude towards Mirabel. Julieta is also a person with a naturally strong and determined character.[11] Although Alma keeps a tight grip on her to be perfect, she is not afraid to disobey her when she demands too much of both her and their family. While she respects her mother as the matriarch of the family, Julieta never seeks perfection like her and dislikes Alma's controlling nature. Despite Alma's negative views of her affair with Agustín, Julieta still fell in love with and married the man. She is also not afraid to stand up to and reprimand Alma for her hard attitude towards her daughters when she pressure them too hard. It is clear that Julieta's greatest fear is that her family is hurt both physically and emotionally. She was heartbroken for years after Bruno suddenly disappeared and since then she has been afraid that the same thing will happen to another member of her family, telling Mirabel that Bruno lost his way in the family and expressing that she doesn't want the same for Mirabel. When Mirabel pointed out that she, Isabela, and Luisa were unhappy and that Alma put too much pressure on them, both Julieta and Agustín can only look on helplessly and sadly for not realizing sooner how miserable their daughters were.
Julieta affectionately hugging Bruno when he returns. The most important thing for Julieta has always been her family and she is very protective of them. She loves Agustín very much and her love for him is so great that she doesn't even care about Alma's negative opinions about their marriage. Despite the fact that Bruno abandoned both her and the family, Julieta never held a grudge or hatred towards him and was willing to mention his name. The moment she sees him return to the family, her face lights up and she rushes to embrace him, showing how happy she is to have Bruno back. Julieta cares deeply about her daughters and will act in their defense when needed. She was willing to enter the ruined Casa Madrigal to save Mirabel, and after it falls apart and her youngest daughter runs away heartbroken, Julieta quickly takes notice and immediately starts searching for her, showing she cares more about her family's welfare than the loss of their magic. Her motherly affection also extends to her nephews and niece, whom she treats as if they were her own children. Julieta has a soft spot for family prankster Camilo, as she hugs him during Antonio's gift ceremony, smiles amusedly when she sees him having fun, and in the books it is implied that she enjoys pampering him by preparing his favorite meals. Physical appearance Julieta is a 50-year-old[12] woman with tan skin and brown eyes that droop slightly downwards. Her hair is curly dark brown with silver and white highlights swooped up into a messy updo, with a bun. She is notably one of the family members who most closely resembles her parents. Julieta inherited much of her mother's physical appearance and her late father's facial expressions. Julieta wears a long-sleeved baby blue shirt with a tiffany blue long skirt and a cooking apron the same color, light brown flat shoes, and golden pearl earrings. Her apron is tied with a green ribbon, and its pockets have various herbs and plants inside them. The apron also has some stitched patterns: plants and, on the pockets, hands holding plants, mortar and pestle, representing her power of healing through her recipes. She doesn't wear her apron on special occasions, like Antonio's gift ceremony or Isabela's proposal dinner. Julieta's shirt and skirt have stitched patterns as well; plants, leaves, and flowers. Powers and Abilities Julieta can heal people with her cooking; when a hurt or sick person eats food cooked by her, they are healed instantly. She was able to heal Mirabel's wounded hand with an arepa con queso. Other injuries that she has healed are a black eye, a fractured forearm, and her husband's bee stings. However, it is unknown to what extent her cooking can heal, if her cooking is specifically required to heal, or if she can only heal with food. Julieta is knowledgeable about medicinal herbs and oils, and regularly uses them in her cooking.[13] Appearances Encanto Julieta first appears as a baby being held by her mother after being born. After her parents are forced to leave their home, with her father, Pedro Madrigal being killed by soldiers, Julieta and her surviving family members, her mother and her younger sister and brother watch their candle being blessed with magic which creates a new home for them. When Julieta and her siblings turn five, they are given magical gifts, where Julieta is given the ability to heal others through her cooking. As the family was getting ready for Antonio's gift ceremony, she asked Mirabel if she wants to talk about her feelings, which she kindly turns the offer down. After she saw her mother talking to Mirabel, she tells her to be kind to Mirabel, knowing that tonight will be really hard for her since it sets off painful memories of her failed ceremony. After Mirabel purportedly saw their home developing cracks, showing a cut she'd received on her hand as proof, Julieta comforted Mirabel, reminding her that she was just as special as anyone else in the family, and healed her hand with an arepa. During the dinner that the family held for Mariano's proposal to Isabela, Julieta sat next to Pepa, who passed along to her that Mirabel had discovered Bruno's last vision. When a furious Alma confronted Julieta and Agustín about it, Julieta rebuked Alma for always being too hard on Mirabel. When the family's home began to fall, Julieta tried to save her daughter, but was pushed out of the house by Casita. After the incident, Julieta found Mirabel shielded under some rubble and asked her if she was hurt. Believing she wasn't, Julieta instructed Mirabel not to move while she answered Pepa's panicked cries for her. When Julieta turned back to Mirabel, she saw that Mirabel had disappeared and panicked as she searched for her daughter. When Mirabel returned, Julieta was overjoyed to see her again, sweeping her into a tight hug and telling her how worried she was. When Alma guided Bruno to the family, Julieta gasped in shock and ran to hug her brother. She assured him that she was just happy he was there and safe. Julieta then joined her family and community in rebuilding their home, admiring Mirabel's leadership skills. Agustín told Julieta that their daughter took after her. When the house was rebuilt and the magic restored, Julieta joined her family to celebrate and to take a new family photo.

Background ♫ It was my wedding day (Félix: It was our wedding day) We were getting ready and there wasn't a cloud in the sky Bruno walks in with a mischievous grin and says; It looks like rain ♫PEPA DESCRIBING HER WEDDING DAY. Pepa is one of the three triplet children born to Alma and Pedro, with her sister, Julieta and her brother, Bruno. When she was just born, their home was attacked by soldiers and her family was forced to flee. After her father's death, a miracle was created that blessed the family with an enchanted house and protection from the raiders. Five years later, Pepa and her two siblings opened their magical doors in the house, revealing their powers. Pepa gained the ability to control the weather with her emotions and has had to learn to control her emotions to avoid causing harm to those around her. Pepa met a man named Félix at some point in her life after receiving her gift; he was very good at helping her calm down when she was in a bad mood, causing her to fall in love with him. Alma immediately accepted Félix as her son-in-law, and Pepa eventually married him, making him a member of the Madrigal family. Some time later, she and Félix had a daughter (Dolores) and two sons (Camilo and Antonio) together. Pepa besides becoming Agustín's sister-in-law after Julieta married him, she also became the maternal aunt of Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel. One of the main reasons why she and the townspeople don't like to talk about Bruno is that on her wedding day he told her that "it looks like rain". This caused Pepa to become extremely worried that rain truly was going to ruin their wedding and she freaked out so much that her gift went crazy and made her and Félix get married in a hurricane. Pepa did not have a good opinion of her brother and held onto resentment toward Bruno for this, presumably to mask her worry for when he vanished. After a decade of separation, Pepa finally reunites with her brother again after the fall of the Casita and he reveals that the misunderstanding at the wedding stemmed from his desire to help her relax and embrace her emotions. In the end, Pepa doesn't hold a grudge against Bruno anymore and hugs him happily together with Julieta. Official Description Pepa and Félix are a couple rooted in balance. Pepa is "overly dramatic, overly emotional, and, for better or worse, her magical gift is that her emotions control the weather. It goes from sunny to hailing to snow to rainbows and her husband loves that about her.[2]Pepa, one of Abuela Alma's triplets, was gifted with the power to control the weather with her emotions. The forecast is often unpredictable, however, as Pepa's emotions are far-reaching and ever-changing.[3] Development As with the rest of the Madrigal family, Pepa was designed to reflect "family archetypes that are immediately relatable".[4] During the creation process, Pepa's gift was to be indestructible and some artworks showed Pepa as a cigar-chewing biker. Her personality would make her daring and she would also like the extreme sports of motocross, describing her as a wild and free spirit.[5][6] However, because her gift was too similar to Luisa's strength, it was changed to emotion-affected weather (which was originally going to belong to Julieta).[7] After removing this concept, the studio changed Pepa's personality so that she was quite sensitive and shaky to balance with her husband's more cheerful and laid-back personality, making them a balanced combination.[8] Carolina Gaitan, Pepa's voice actress, describes her character as being relatable to her: "I'm a little bit crazy as well… overly dramatic and sometimes a little bit like a drama queen. But most of all, I think it's about vulnerability. Like, not to be in control of everything… she's emotional and she allows herself to be emotional and I think that's very beautiful about a person, about a character."[9] Personality
Pepa muttering a mantra repeatedly to calm down. Described as "overly emotional and dramatic", Pepa is an impatient woman and can get angry easily, contrasting with her husband Félix's more laid-back personality and positive spirit. Pepa also sometimes lets her temper get the better of her, and often says things that she doesn't mean, however she occasionally apologizes for this. When Pepa gets extremely nervous, she rapidly strokes her braid as she repeatedly mutters "Clear skies, clear skies!" to help her control her emotions and thus her weather. As she feels happy, Pepa is very energetic and therefore it is difficult for her to sit still, enjoying dancing by performing quick dance moves when she is having fun. Unlike her composed sister or her shy brother, Pepa is more outgoing and cheerful than them so she is much more expressive of the three. She has frequent mood swings, going from being happy to angry or vice versa in a moment that alters the weather around her. Pepa can get very nervous, anxious, stressed and sometimes even neurotic very easily. Her emotions sometimes control her more than she can control them, resulting in chaotic weather conditions.
Pepa forcing herself to be happy to calm her emotions. Her temper can easily calm down when supported by the people she loves. Although she can get angry with Félix at times, Pepa loves her husband and always smiles when he supports or helps her, melting into Félix's arms when she dances with him. Félix can calm her by being flirtatious or even simply placing a hand on her shoulder. To a lesser extent, her children can also calm her down and she relies on them to help her whenever she has an emotional meltdown. An example is when her elder son, Camilo attempted to calm her down after learning their family's magic was dying and was dismayed when she accidentally hurt him with a spark of lightning. Much of Pepa's stress is due to the fact that she has to control her temper everyday, not only to prevent bad weather, but also to avoid hurting the people around her. To make her stress even worse, her mother Alma often negatively criticized Pepa for her emotional rants and rarely supported her, which made Pepa feel she couldn't express her emotions freely.
Pepa is finally free to express her emotions and powers however she likes. Although she is not ill-intentioned, Pepa can become unintentionally spiteful. She doesn't like to talk about her brother, like the townsfolk, because Bruno told her "it looks like rain" at her wedding and made her anxious to the point of causing a hurricane, quickly getting angry when Bruno is mentioned. But deep down, she truly missed him despite everything that happened between them, her resentment and grudge actually masking how hurt she was of his absence. When Bruno finally returned, she was overjoyed and ran to welcome him back with a hug. Like Alma initially, Pepa has a tendency for things to be perfect, but does not strive on perfection too much like her mother. She wanted her younger son, Antonio's gift ceremony to be perfect and worked to give herself a perfect image to her community by controlling her emotions. However, this is all caused by her mother keeping a tight grip on her. Although Pepa respects Alma, she is also not afraid to get angry with her when she reprimands her when her emotions were too strong for her to control. When she reconciles with her mother and brother after the fall of Casita, Pepa became allowed to express her emotions and powers however she likes.
Pepa dancing happily with her husband and youngest son. Despite her rapid emotional swings which can cause her to clash with some of them, she is very caring and loving towards her family. Pepa easily forgave her mother when Alma sincerely apologized to her and the rest of the family for her past mistakes. Like her sister, Pepa cares deeply about her children and wants the best for them. She wanted her youngest son's fifth birthday to be the best day of his life and expressed how proud she was of him several times. During Antonio's gift ceremony, she was shown approaching him along with Félix to congratulate him and hug him when he received his magical gift. After the Casa Madrigal collapses, Pepa's main concern was the well-being of her family rather than the loss of her home where she immediately rushed to Antonio who was crying over the loss of his gift. In the graphic novel it is revealed that Pepa quickly accepted Dolores' romance with Mariano Guzmán and is happy for them, showing her daughter that she supports her. Her affection also extends to her nieces and she is close to them. Isabela is noticeably more connected to Pepa than to either of her parents, with Pepa treating her as if she were a second daughter. She was worried that her oldest niece's marriage proposal would go well and the only time Isabela has a genuine smile about the former proposal is when she dances with Pepa. Physical appearance Pepa is a 50-year-old[10] woman with fair skin, high rosy cheekbones, curly hip-length auburn hair in a braid, and dark olive green eyes. She has a small gap between her two front teeth and thin eyebrows. Although not as notable as Julieta, Pepa inherited many of her mother's facial expressions. Pepa is also noticeably taller than her siblings and husband. She wears an amber orange rain patterned dress that has two yellow scalloped collars with sun motifs and amber accents, and a single dark orange stripe on the skirt with what appear to be flower patterns on it, a canary yellow knotted ribbon bandana with a lightning bolt pattern, metallic golden sun-shaped earrings, and amber orange espadrilles with golden sun details and black ribbons around her ankles. On her wedding day she used the same sun earrings with an identical copy of her current dress, only white with light pink details and instead of using a ribbon she wore a long wedding veil that reached her hips. Powers and Abilities
Pepa generating a storm cloud when she is angry or feels some other negative emotion. Empathic Weather Manipulation: Pepa has the power of Empathetic Weather Manipulation, she can control the weather through her emotional state; happiness causes warmth and sunshine, whereas frustration, stress, and sadness causes storms and heavy rain. If Pepa gets deeply upset or frustrated, she can cause snowstorms or hurricanes. When feeling these negative emotions, a cloud will appear over her head and follow her wherever she goes. Depending how strong the emotion she is feeling the cloud will increase in size; in fact, she can even inflict her emotions onto actual clouds instead of having a singular one above her and can cause rain and other types of weather onto there, along with being able to summon a tornado around her. If she calms down and tries to stay positive, usually by saying "clear skies" multiple times, the cloud will go away. She has very little control over her gift, because if she gets too stressed or scared Pepa can hurt people around her with lightning or strong winds. Initially she could only control the weather when she is happy, such as manifesting rainbows around the Casita and in family photos. However after letting her feelings go and no longer trying to hold them back or hide them, Pepa was shown creating a light hailstorm, one thing she does when she's frustrated despite being happy. Showing her new mastery of both her emotions and her ability, meaning that Pepa maybe can summon any weather anywhere she prefers without having to feel a certain emotion. Despite her powerset, she is not all that powerful because although she can create storms in spaces the size of a room, she is unable to create a large natural disaster even if she tried.[11] Appearances Encanto
Pepa worrying about how Antonio's gift ceremony will go. Pepa first appears as an infant in her mother Alma's flashback, shortly after she and her siblings were born to Alma and Pedro. After her family was forced out of their home, leading her father to be killed by soldiers, their family became blessed with magic and were given a new home. At the age of five, Pepa, along with her siblings, Julieta and Bruno, were given magical gifts where she was given the ability to control the weather depending on her emotions. In the present, Pepa is getting ready to start the day and heading to the village with the rest of her family to help around. During "The Family Madrigal", Pepa is seen happily dancing with a sun on her head in a field of crops before falling down and getting angry, causing it to rain on the field she was present in. Since the day was also her youngest son Antonio's fifth birthday and gift ceremony, Pepa soon returned home to help prepare for the celebration.
Pepa nervous when she can't find her youngest son Antonio before his gift ceremony. When she returned to the Casa Madrigal, Pepa began to place some rainbow clouds around the house for her son's special day. After that, she anxiously spent the better part of the day agitated over whether her son's gift ceremony that evening would go perfectly, since the previous ceremony had ended with Mirabel not getting a gift or a door. As her husband tried to approach her, Pepa's anxiety created a whirlwind that threatened to ruin the floral arrangements for Antonio's gift ceremony. However, she immediately calms down when Isabela makes her dramatic entrance and presents her with a bouquet of roses to help calm her down. Pepa thanks her niece while Felix calls Isabela "our angel". Later on, when Pepa went to collect Antonio to bring him downstairs for the ceremony, she couldn't find him, generating a cloud over her head. While walking around the Casita looking for Antonio, Pepa argued with Alma that she was losing control of her gift and asked in frustration what her mother wanted from her.
Pepa approaches and proudly hugs Antonio after he receives his magical gift. Mirabel eventually found Antonio and brought him down to where Pepa was waiting with her husband and other two children. Pepa expressed tearful pride that Antonio was "all grown up," producing a cloud that began to rain. Félix shooed the cloud away, telling Pepa she was getting Antonio all wet. After Dolores informed them that Antonio's gift ceremony would begin shortly, Pepa and Félix told their youngest son that they would meet him at his door. Pepa then joined Félix at the top of the stairs of the house alongside Abuela. The couple anxiously held hands as Antonio moved closer to the door to receive his gift, afraid the ceremony would fail. When the ceremony proved to be a success, Pepa smiled quietly with her husband and looked excitedly at Antonio on as the boy and his animal friends explored his new room. As the party moved into Antonio's magical bedroom, the Madrigals got together and a family photo was taken, which everyone unknowingly excluded Mirabel from. While dancing with Antonio, Pepa and everyone else heard from a panicked Mirabel that there were cracks in the Casita. When everyone came to investigate, the cracks weren't there and Alma ushered everyone back to the party.
Pepa entering the nursery with a storm cloud over her head. The next morning, Pepa joined her family for breakfast. As she went to sit down, Mirabel cut in front of her and took her seat so she could sit next to Luisa, prompting a small thundercloud over Pepa's head, which Félix easily calmed. She expressed annoyance as Mirabel kept interrupting the family meeting and when breakfast concludes, Pepa joins everyone in the family chant "La Familia Madrigal" before returning to her daily activities. At some point in the afternoon, Pepa went to the nursery to gather the last of Antonio's things and move them to his new room. As she entered the nursery, she heard Mirabel mutter Bruno's name and immediately began thundering. She tried to shoo the clouds away, to no avail, as she scolded Mirabel for bringing up Bruno. Mirabel attempted to ask her what it might mean to be involved in one of Bruno's prophecies, and Pepa tried to change the subject to getting ready for Isabela's proposal dinner, but Félix burst in and insisted on telling Mirabel about Bruno's prophecies.
Pepa alongside Félix explaining how her brother Bruno "ruined" their wedding day. In "We Don't Talk About Bruno" Pepa scrambled angrily to interrupt Félix and keep him quiet before finally giving in and explaining why they didn't talk about Bruno. She began to tell how Bruno ruined her wedding day by making her nervous with a prophecy and telling her that it "it looks like rain". Due to how much she cared that their marriage went well and she wanted it to be a special day for both of them, her brother's words caused Pepa to get scared thinking that she would ruin the wedding with her gift, causing her and Félix to get married in a hurricane. As she recounted this, Félix constantly interrupted her by describing the day as the best day of his life. Although she did not agree that their wedding was a happy day despite the bad weather, Pepa melted in her husband's arms as she danced with him and then they joined in the verses of their other relatives. After Camilo announced the imminent arrival of the Guzmáns at the house, Pepa helped her family prepare the table for dinner while dancing with Isabela and replaying how Bruno ruined her wedding day, but happy about the imminent proposal.
Pepa telling Julieta about Bruno's vision and the miracle's imminent death. During the proposal dinner, Pepa sat next to Félix and Julieta. Félix leaned over to whisper to her, passing along what Dolores had learned about Mirabel finding Bruno's last vision. This agitated Pepa, causing her to develop a thundercloud. Alma pointed it out, and Pepa stroked her braid while chanting her mantra, "clear skies," to try and calm herself, to no avail. She whispered to Julieta about Mirabel and the vision. As the tension began to escalate, a bolt of lightning from Pepa's cloud startled Pico the toucan. As Bruno's vision was revealed to the whole family and Dolores proclaimed that they were all doomed because of Mirabel, cracks spread throughout the dining room, everyone's magic began to fritz out, and a gust of wind from Pepa's cloud blew open the window, revealing a crowd outside waiting to congratulate Isabela and Mariano on their engagement. The cloud then began to rain, soaking everyone in the room. As the family evacuated the dining room, Pepa yelled at Mirabel as she passed, demanding to know what she had done, which she says that she has nothing to do with the incident.
Pepa hurting her son Camilo with a spark of lightning. After the Guzmáns left and Isabela's proposal dinner failed, Pepa retreated to her room to try and calm herself, but the storm she'd created continued to rage inside the Casa Madrigal. Camilo escorted her to her room and brought her tea and attempted to lead her through calming breathing techniques. But when Mirabel slammed into the wall behind Pepa's room while chasing Bruno, she startled Pepa to the point that she accidentally zapped Camilo with lightning from the cloud above her head, which lead into a series of injuries for the teenager as he wildly shapeshifted into his family members. Pepa later went downstairs to join the other adults in the family, where her anxiety caused a snowstorm above her head, which Félix tried in vain to clear away. As the cracks continued expanding and Alma argued with Julieta and Agustín, the snow from Pepa's cloud continued to increase so Alma told her to calm down, to which Pepa angrily replied to her mother that she was lucky it wasn't a hurricane.
Pepa and Félix horrified to see Miracle Candle in danger and Casita about to collapse. Later that same day, Pepa heard Alma and Mirabel arguing in the courtyard and came to investigate, arriving in time to see their argument escalate to yelling and accusations that the other was the one hurting the magic and the family. This caused the Casa Madrigal begins to destroy around them and the Miracle Candle begins to go out. As the house started to break down and everyone started to stumble on the cracking floor, Pepa was caught by her husband in order to keep her balance and screamed in alarm when she realized that the candle was about to fall out of a window, to which other members of the family in response rushed to save the candle. She watched helplessly as Camilo, Isabela, and Mirabel all tried to reach the candle despite the danger it represented. As the magic starts fading, and the house starts collapsing, the Casita forces everyone, except Mirabel out of the house. After Casa Madrigal collapsed completely and the candle dies along with the magic, Pepa checked on her family to make sure they were unhurt, calling desperately for Julieta to come help her. When Julieta noticed Mirabel went missing, the Madrigals and the other townspeople spread out to search for her.
Pepa happy that Bruno finds his way to their family after a decade of separation. By the next day, Pepa and the family saw that Mirabel and Alma (who reconcile with each other) returned to Casita's ruins to reunited with their family. During "All of You", she and Julieta listen as Alma apologizes for holding onto the magic too tight, fearing she would lose them too after losing Pedro, and says the miracle isn't magic they possess, rather simply themselves. Although they are initially surprised by how her mother apologizes for her past mistakes and treats them with care, they both forgive Alma and embraced her. When as Alma also reveals that Bruno has returned to the family and guides him to join them, Pepa gasping with joy at seeing him after a decade and ran to scoop her brother up in a hug along with Julieta. When Camilo is confused by his presence by mentioning that they were not talking about him, Bruno begins to apologize to Pepa for her wedding, explaining that he was just trying to help her with her nerves. He encouraged her to show her emotions, to which Félix replied that he was always saying the same thing and calling Bruno "bro". While Bruno continued apologizing, Pepa, Julieta, and Agustín silenced him and said that everything is fine now that he's back before wrapping him up in a big hug. With family all together, Mirabel rallied them to fix the house and the entire town also pitched in as thanks for all the Madrigals had done for them over the decades. After completing the house, Mirabel added a doorknob the family made just for her to the front door, causing a new source of magic to be born that brings Casita back to life and returning the gifts of the Madrigals, but also making a new front door with all the Madrigals carved into it. Pepa, along with everyone else present, was swept into the house, where she was able to generate a small hailstorm, under which she and Félix danced joyously. The family then celebrated the returned of their home and gifts with a family picture. Pepa stood next to her husband and Camilo as they posed for the photo. While everyone smiled shouting "La Familia Madrigal", Casita unexpectedly brings the entire family together, creating an imperfect, but still happy, family image.

Bruno Madrigal is a major character in Disney's 2021 animated feature film Encanto. He is the only son and youngest child of Alma and Pedro Madrigal, and youngest sibling of Julieta and Pepa. Bruno is the only one of his siblings who does not have children and was gifted with the ability to see the future. Bruno's odd demeanor, affinity with rats, and often doomsaying visions had distinguished him as the "black sheep" of the Madrigals, resulting in his estrangement from the family. Following his disappearance, it became taboo to mention Bruno, who was reviled as a villainous figure by the townsfolk until his deep-rooted love for his family was unearthed.
What is the unique ability that Bruno Madrigal possesses in Disney's Encanto? Why is Bruno Madrigal considered the 'black sheep' of the Madrigal family? Who are Bruno Madrigal's siblings in the movie Encanto? Why did Bruno Madrigal become estranged from his family in Encanto? What is Bruno Madrigal's relationship with rats in the film Encanto? Background Abuela worried about the magic. So she begged me to look into the future. See what it meant. And I saw the magic in danger, our house breaking, and then I saw you. But the vision was different. It...it would change and there was no one answer, no clear fate. Like your future was undecided, but I knew how it was gonna look, I knew what everyone would think because I'm Bruno and everyone always assumes the worst. So...BRUNO EXPLAINING WHY HE LEFT.
Bruno being asked by Abuela Alma to see into future. Bruno is the youngest of the fraternal triplets and the only son of Alma and Pedro, his siblings being Julieta and Pepa. In addition to being the brother-in-law of Félix and Agustín, Bruno is also the maternal uncle of Isabela, Dolores, Luisa, Camilo, Mirabel, and Antonio. When he was just born, their home was attacked and his family was forced to flee. After his father's death, a miracle was created that blessed the family with an enchanted house and protection from the raiders. Five years later, Bruno and his two siblings opened their magical doors in the house, revealing their powers. Bruno was given the ability to see into the future, which caused misery to his hometown because of his often cryptic visions and their bleak outcomes (such as supposedly having visions that a lady's goldfish would die, a man would grow a gut, and the town's priest would lose his hair). He also was in attendance at his sister Pepa's wedding to her husband Félix, and, noticing her anxiety, he tried to lighten the mood by joking that it "looked like rain." Pepa, however, believed he was sharing a vision, and her weather-related powers and anxiety caused her to unleash a hurricane on the previously-sunny wedding day. Because of his unwelcome gift, he was considered the black sheep of the Madrigal family. Bruno's relationship with his mother Alma worsened over the years as she often doubted his capacity to help his family and community, causing Bruno to distance himself from the family. Despite this, he had some impact in Isabela and Dolores' youth, where he had visions where the former would gain a prosperous life and her powers would grow stronger while the latter's true love would be betrothed to another, which unintentionally it would cause various traumas for both of them as they grew up (increasing pressure from Isabela to meet Abuela's expectations of perfection and Dolores would grow up believing she could never be with the man she loved). After a young Mirabel did not get a gift on the night of her gift ceremony, Abuela worried about the family's magic and asked Bruno to see what the future showed. He had a vision with two possible outcomes: Mirabel in front of Casa Madrigal, one with the house intact and the other with the house breaking. Due to the typically negative outcomes of his prophecies and how everyone always assumes the worst in them, Bruno scatters the vision slab and hid himself from everyone to protect Mirabel from being blamed. Because he disappeared without saying anything, Alma's bad thoughts about her son increased to the point that she would think that Bruno never cared about the family. His name was then considered taboo among his family (particularly to Pepa, who held a grudge against him for "ruining" her and Félix's wedding) and the townsfolk. However, Bruno loved his family too much to truly go away, and so he stayed hidden in the walls of the house for ten years and spent much of his time within the walls patching up cracks as they manifested. Nobody knew his actual location except Dolores, who said nothing in his decade of absence despite her strong dislike of keeping secrets. Because Bruno was withdrawn when he was still in the house, Luisa, Camilo, and Mirabel would grow up with little to no memory of him. Luisa would only remember the day he left and the family's reaction to his disappearance, Camilo would grow up listening to the some rumors that the family and the townspeople said about him, and Mirabel would have very little knowledge about Bruno except the fact that suddenly disappeared.[3][4] About five years after his disappearance, his youngest nephew Antonio would be born, with whom Bruno would never have contact because he was still hiding in the house. Official Description Though the estranged Bruno was gifted with visions of the future, the family believed that Bruno's visions were causing the misfortune. As such, he mysteriously disappeared from Casa Madrigal.[5]The third of Alma's triplets, Bruno has been estranged from the Madrigal family for as long as Luisa, Camilo, and Mirabel can remember. Gifted with the ability to see the future, he made honest but often doomsaying predictions that proved problematic for Abuela and the rest of the family so he disappeared, becoming the uncle nobody talks about.[6] Development As with the rest of the Madrigal family, Bruno was designed to reflect "family archetypes that are immediately relatable".[7] Bruno was one of the characters in the film that had the most changes and designs before reaching his final version. The studio initially created Bruno as one of Mirabel's cousins before changing to her uncle. During the creation process, Bruno in other concepts was also originally going to have a bigger and fatter body, but his costume was always meant to be the old ceremonial outfit that he used to wear when he was having visions of the future for the people that came to see him. Another thing that was not changed, apart from his taste for rats and the theater, was his role as the Black Sheep of the family and to create his personality a lot of research was done on people who are confined and don't have human communication.[8] Bruno's voice actor, John Leguizamo, described his character: "Well, Bruno is that relative that always says the wrong thing at every party, who wrecks every holiday, because they're always talking too much. And so, that's who I am. I'm Bruno. I'm that uncle that they try to get rid of. And they do get rid of him in this movie. And I relate to him because I had that bit of a issue. I was always talking too much, saying everything nobody wanted to – was afraid to say… I was the black sheep of the family, so I relate to Bruno."[9] Personality
Bruno allows Antonio's capybara to join the vision. Due to the nature of his gift of precognition, Bruno has been labeled as someone who "makes bad things happen" by both the village and his family when he is merely the requested bearer of the news. Despite being feared by almost the entire village, Bruno is actually kind-hearted, caring, fairly comical, and possesses a strong love and loyalty towards his family. Although he is described as a monstrous and sadistic person, Bruno is a quiet, shy, and kind man who easily becomes nervous and suffers from anxiety, like his sister, Pepa. Bruno is introduced in the film as insecure and avoidant, and believes others' accusations that his gift only brings problems. However, after he is fully reaccepted into his family, he becomes more cheerful and enthusiastic. Bruno is also shown to be gentle with animals in a way similar to his youngest nephew, Antonio. He befriended the rats living within the walls of the Casa Madrigal, sharing what little food he has with them and enjoying their company. When the house crumbles, he takes the rats with him before making his escape. Bruno also takes quickly to Antonio's animal friends, letting his capybara's join the vision and allowing the coatimundi, who he shooed away prior to his vision, to hang from his shoulder. He was also good to the horse he presumably found and rode on to find Mirabel and Alma after Casita's destruction.
Bruno's desire to be with his family again despite their negative opinion about him. Being described as introverted and socially awkward, whenever he had a prophecy, he inadvertently hurt or angered the people around him, causing him to retreat from society and eventually from his family to avoid upsetting anyone. His gift made him paranoid and fearful of his surroundings, and he developed a sand-based ritual to help focus and control his power. As a result of living for ten years in isolation within the walls of the Casa Madrigal, Bruno developed odd behaviors, such as knocking on wood, stumbling, muttering, and developing two alternate identities: "Hernando", who is "scared of nothing" and "Jorge", who makes spackle, to keep himself occupied in his isolation, along with befriending some rats to keep him company. Yet, despite claiming he is fine with his isolation from his family, Bruno actually misses them and wished to be with them, despite their negative perceptions of him. He shares a complicated relationship with his mother Alma that had become strained due to his gift not living up to her expectations and that she only saw the worst in him. As a result of his mother's difficult attitude, Bruno was intimidated by her and tried to avoid her, even though he wanted to make her proud.
Bruno's silent reconciliation with his mother Alma. He is very selfless man and his biggest acts of selflessness is catalyzed by his love for his family. Despite the way some treated him when he was around and didn't like to talk about him after he left, Bruno is not spiteful or vindictive and has a forgiving heart. When he was reunited with his mother, he never showed hate towards Alma nor did he reject her loving gestures in spite of his confusion, and listened intently as she began to apologize to him and the rest of the family for her mistakes and redefined their miracle. He sacrificed his reputation and went into self-exile for a decade to protect Mirabel from being ostracized and treated the same way he had been after seeing an uncertain vision connecting her to their family's magic disappearing. Bruno was also willing to take the blame for Mirabel after the Casita's destruction. Initially fearful of being seen by Alma, Bruno revealed himself and prepared to confront his mother in defense of his niece before Alma, having now realized she and her idealism were the causes of their family's problems, embraced him, which surprises him completely. Although the townspeople were initially afraid of him due to his gift, Bruno happily works with them in rebuilding the house showing that he now has a close bond with them.
Bruno apologizing to Félix and Pepa while telling his sister how much he loves her. Bruno's greatest wish is to be able to help his family. Although he was initially avoidant of his mother because he was initially afraid of her, he does not feel the same way towards his older sisters or brothers-in-law. The misunderstanding at Pepa's wedding arose from his attempt to help her relax and embrace her emotions with an ill-worded joke. When they meet again, he made his first apology to her and Félix for inadvertently ruining their wedding by stressing her out with his comment, and sings to her how much he loves her and he wants her to be herself. With the exception of Camilo, who dramatizes Bruno as a demonic figure and was later confused by his return by being the only member of the family who never knew he's actually a good person, the younger generation does not have anything negative to say about him: Mirabel and Luisa still refer him as their uncle despite the taboo on his name and possessing little memory of him before he left, Dolores empathizes with his problems and chooses not to reveal his hiding in the house's walls despite the depressing vision he gave her when she was younger, Isabela is the only one to say something positive about him while everyone else speaks negatively of him, and Antonio, who has no memory of his uncle, is never afraid of him thanks to the rats and sees him as a friend.[10] Physical appearance Bruno is a thin and unkempt-looking 50-year-old[11] man with overgrown, curly black hair mixed with gray streaks, a big, prominent nose, whitely clean teeth, a thin unshaved mustache, and a light beard shaped like an hourglass on his chin. He has green hazel eyes, light freckles on his face, and prominent eye bags. Of his siblings, Bruno is the one who most resembles their late father, Pedro. He inherited most of his father's physical characteristics, but unlike Pedro, Bruno has an overly pale complexion. He wears a hooded, ripped up green ruana cuffed at the elbows with hourglass prints over a burgundy shirt that represent his gift, brown and dark pants, and black flip flops. When he uses his precognitive powers, his irises glow bright green. His clothes are visibly worn with his poncho being rough at the edges and his shirt collar being unbuttoned and loose, adding to his ragged look. Powers and Abilities
Bruno using his powers to create a vision of the future. Precognition: Bruno has the ability to see the future. To help focus and cope with the taxing nature of his power, Bruno performs a ritual that requires a large, open space to properly see his visions, and initiates it by drawing a circle in sand and burning leaves.[12] He does not have full control of his ability and some visions can come involuntarily.[13][14] Bruno's visions are partly connected to his emotions: if he is fearful he will see a negative future and if he feels a strong emotion could trigger an involuntary vision.[15] Once the vision is initiated, Bruno's irises glow bright emerald-green and the sand circle rises into the air to create a whirling dome of sand. Within the dome, the sand forms glowing green images that contain the visions. These images are not always clear on what happens, often leaving them up to interpretation and making them self-fulfilling, and they do not always progress in chronological order, but when he focuses on certain images, the vision increases in clarity. Someone else can be present within the sand circle and see the visions, and they can also help him focus on certain parts. When the vision ends, Bruno creates a thick emerald slab showing an image of the most significant detail of the vision. Even shattered into pieces the slabs continue to show the images. If the vision has multiple possible outcomes, the slab created can show the different outcomes by being titled at certain angles. His knowledge of the future includes the future of entertainment, as he often has the rats that keep him company perform various TV programs such, as game shows and telenovelas decades before they happen. • Parkour: Despite a lack of formal training and being middle-aged, Bruno is a natural freerunner, able to quickly make his way through the confined spaces within the walls of Casa Madrigal. This could attributed by having spent a decade in the walls, and having knowledge of the obstacles. He was shown able to spryly weave through sticks connected between the walls and make it across a gap in three precise jumps without losing his momentum while chased by Mirabel. Appearances Encanto
Mirabel recounting how Bruno suddenly disappeared. Bruno first appears as an infant in his mother Alma's flashback, shortly after he and his sisters were born to her and Pedro. After his family was forced out of their home, during which his father was killed by soldiers, the family became blessed with magic and was given a new home. At the age of five, Bruno, along with his sisters Julieta and Pepa, were given magical gifts where he was given the ability to see the future. In the present, Bruno is no longer in the Madrigal family since he disappeared years ago without a trace and his name became a strong taboo in the Encanto.
Pepa's representation of Bruno at her wedding. Bruno is mentioned several times in the story by his family and the villagers before he actually makes his proper appearance. In "The Family Madrigal", Mirabel briefly tells the Town Kids about Bruno's ability to see into the future and how he suddenly disappeared from the house one day and became estranged from the family. During "We Don't Talk About Bruno" the Madrigals start talking in different ways about Bruno, starting with Pepa and Félix who remember how Bruno ruined their wedding day. Dolores seems genuinely sympathetic towards Bruno and saying that it was hard for someone to have a gift like his. Having no memories of his uncle like Mirabel, Camilo turns into a version of Bruno with shining green eyes, with an evil grin and surrounded by rats, moving in sinister ways. And just like Dolores, Isabela doesn't relate to Bruno in a negative way and talks about a positive vision of her future that her uncle gave her when she was young.
Bruno reveals that he has been hiding in the Casa Madrigal repairing the cracks. After it was revealed to the rest of the Madrigal family that magic and the Casita were in danger, Bruno was eventually discovered in the walls by Mirabel, who pursued him through the house. He initially outran her, but went back when he heard her calling for help, catching her before she fell down a hole. He fell into the hole himself, only to discover that it wasn't very deep. Mirabel begged Bruno to explain his vision to her, following him back to the space he'd been occupying adjacent to the kitchen and dining room. Over the time that he'd been hiding there, he had amassed a collection of odds and ends, as well as several pet rats, which he used to entertain himself by training them to act out telenovelas. Mirabel convinced Bruno to explain his vision, but Bruno initially refused to help Mirabel further when she asked him for another vision. She got him to agree when Antonio, with the aid of the rats to whom he could speak, also discovered them and offered up his room for Bruno to use for his vision.
Bruno making a vision to find out if the magic can be saved. Bruno accompanied Mirabel into Antonio's room, where he laid out a sand circle as part of his ritual. The house continued to shudder around them, prompting Mirabel to urge Bruno to hurry, but Bruno insisted they couldn't rush the future. Once the ritual circle was set up, Bruno warned Mirabel that she might not like what she would see, and expressed fear that she would blame him for causing the future. She reassured him that she didn't think he caused the future. Antonio offered Bruno his stuffed jaguar toy "for the nerves," and Bruno relaxed and began his vision. The vision initially went the same way it had before, and Bruno wanted to quit, but Mirabel insisted on pressing on. She saw a golden butterfly and pointed it out. Mirabel and Bruno followed it, leading to a vision of the candle glowing brighter and Mirabel hugging an obscured figure. The image cleared to reveal Isabela, and the vision ended, leaving a glass tablet with the vision etched into it. Bruno was pleased to see a positive image of Mirabel and Isabela hugging, but when he saw that Mirabel was not happy with it, he threw the glass tablet aside in frustration. Bruno encouraged Mirabel to seek Isabela out and make amends with her, telling Mirabel that she was exactly what their family needed. He then went back into the walls for fear that his mother might find him. Before doing so, however, he invited Mirabel to come visit, and Mirabel in turn promised that after she saved the miracle, she would bring him home.
Bruno escaping the crumbling Casita after saving his rats. Later on that day, the Casa Madrigal began crumbling after Mirabel and Alma gets into a heated argument about the latter not deeming anyone good enough for her as well as only seeing the worst in Bruno and doubting his loyalty to their family. As the house was coming down, Bruno ran through the walls grabbing his pet rats. He then put a bucket on his head and rammed through a nearby wall, falling out onto the lawn behind the house. After Casita fell, Bruno found a horse the next day and rode out of the valley to find Mirabel, who had ran away in guilt and sadness. He discovered her with Alma at the river and rode up to them, yelling that none of what had happened was Mirabel's fault. He argued his culpability in that he gave Mirabel a vision, and that she was only trying to help while Alma is shocked when she sees Bruno after ten years. Holding his ground, Bruno fiercely insisted that he didn't care what his mother thought of him as he prepared to reprove her, only to be suddenly embraced by Alma, who called him "Brunito" and kissed his cheeks, leaving him utterly confused as a content Mirabel directed them to ride back home.
Bruno is reunited with his sisters after years and is welcomed back into the family. When the three returned to the rubble of the Casa Madrigal, Bruno initially hid shy of reuniting with the rest of their family. In "All of You," he watches from hiding as his mother apologizes to the family for holding on too tight, fearing she would lose them too after losing Pedro, and redefining the miracle as just themselves rather than the magic. Bruno shyly approaches her as Alma calmly guided him to reunite with his sisters and he was immediately happy when they ran to hug him. While most of the Madrigals are overjoyed by his return, others are surprised by his sudden appearance. Camilo expressed enormous confusion with his presence and his siblings' familiarity in the situation, says that the family needs to talk about Bruno, to which the latter agrees. Bruno then began a string of apologies, including apologizing for Pepa's wedding and encouraging her to show her emotions freely, a sentiment Félix shared. When he attempts to apologize to Julieta for past indiscretions, his sisters and Agustín stopped him and hugged him as they expressed their joy that he was back with the family.
Bruno helping in the reconstruction of the house. With family all together, everyone came together to fix the house and the entire town also pitched in as thanks for all the Madrigals had done for them over the decades. Bruno later helped with rebuilding the Casa Madrigal by working with the townspeople to mark different places with the sand. After completing the house, Mirabel added a doorknob the family made just for her to the front door, causing a new source of magic to be born that brings Casita back to life and returning the gifts of the Madrigals, but also making a new front door with all the Madrigals carved into it, including those who married into the family, Félix and Agustín. As they enter the Casa Madrigal, Bruno happily watches as his family members recover their powers and have fun with them. The Madrigals then celebrated the returned of their home and gifts with a family picture. As they posed for the photo and everyone shouting "La Familia Madrigal", Casita unexpectedly crushed the entire family, creating an imperfect family image.

For other characters, see Felix. Camilo. Stop pretending you're Dolores so you can have seconds!FÉLIX SCOLDING CAMILO. Félix Madrigal is a supporting character in Disney's 2021 animated feature film Encanto. He is the husband of Pepa Madrigal, and the father of Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio. As he married into the family, Félix lacks a magical gift of his own. Despite this, his carefree and fun-loving nature helps to manage his wife's weather-controlling emotions. Background Félix's life before joining the Madrigal family is unknown other than that his biological family still lives in Encanto. At some point in his life, Félix met a woman named Pepa and affectionately helped her calm down when she was in a bad mood, making them both fall in love. Felix became one of the few people who gets along with Abuela Alma and over time became close to her. Unlike Abuela's bad relationship with Agustín, Alma immediately accepted Félix as part of the Madrigals and was completely in agreement that he and Pepa would fall in love. Years later, he and Pepa had a daughter (Dolores) and two sons (Camilo and Antonio) together. In addition to becoming the brother-in-law of Julieta, Bruno, and Agustín, he is also the uncle of Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel. One of the main reasons why the family and townspeople don't like to talk about Bruno is that Félix and Pepa were originally to be married on a sunny day, which became a hurricane due to Bruno's unfortunately badly timed good-natured teasing to calm his anxious older sister. Despite the wind and rain, Félix remembers his wedding day as "joyous" even though his wife disagrees with him even in the present day. Official Description Félix provides a grounding force for his deeply passionate wife Pepa—he's easygoing and often the life of the party.[1]Felix is Pepa's husband and father to Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio. He is kind and is always the life of the party. Felix loves his wife very much and wants nothing more than to make her happy. Development As with the rest of the Madrigal family, Félix was designed to reflect "family archetypes that are immediately relatable".[2] As in the final production, the studio created Félix from the start with a cheerful and relaxed personality to contrast with the more nervous and restless personality of his wife Pepa. During the creation process, Félix, along with Agustín, were originally explored as a "double act". Originally they were both from outside the Encanto and they had a connection to Mirabel because they also don't have powers, in their case, because they married into the family.[3] Mauro Castillo, Félix's voice actor, describes his character: "Félix is the soul of the party. He loves the music. He's a music lover and he deeply loves his wife Pepa with her change of mood, and he loves everything of her. He admires every single member of the family, and he likes food a lot. The salsa."[4] Personality
Félix balancing the emotional personality of his wife, Pepa. Contrast to Pepa's sensitive and shaky personality, Félix is a laid-back and positive-spirited man, balancing his often nervous wife. He is a humorous and comedic man who easily puts on a smile to those around him, especially when it comes to cheering up his wife. The two are always in harmony as Félix understands Pepa's struggle to keep her emotions in check and so helps her to keep them at bay. The two are constantly together at meals and are affectionate with each other.
With his cheerful personality, Félix makes the normally stoic Abuela Alma smile. His carefree nature also enables him to get along well with other family members. Félix is funny and kind to the whole family, even Mirabel who is not very popular among the Madrigals due to her lack of gift. With his incredible cheerfulness he has a specialty of making not only his wife, but anyone around him smile. Félix is close to even the quieter members of his family, calling his brother-in-law Bruno "bro" and getting along very well with the strict Abuela Alma and even gets her to dance happily with him. Like Agustín, Félix is also humble and selfless, as he never complains when his wife loses control of her powers or being the only one in his family not to have powers.
Unlike much of the family, Felix has no problem talking about Bruno. While he goes along with his family (especially his wife) and towns people's refrains from talking about Bruno as his name is considered a taboo, Félix himself is not against bringing up his name when Mirabel inquired to learn more about her maternal uncle, only stopping when Pepa shushed him. Adding to that, Félix does not seem to hold any hard feelings against Bruno, even when he seemingly ruined his and Pepa's wedding day by adding distress to Pepa, and indirectly causing a hurricane, as Félix still remembers his wedding day as wonderful. When Bruno reunited with the Madrigals and cleared up the misunderstanding, Félix appears to have a hunch beforehand that Bruno is not malicious by heart and simply wanted to help his sister and supports his brother-in-law.
Félix checks Camilo's head to make sure he is not hurt. While Félix respects Abuela as the matriarch of the family, he is often annoyed by her reprimands to Pepa to keep control of her emotions to prevent constant raining, with Félix backing up and supporting his wife. Félix is a good father and can be very affectionate. He gets along very well with his nieces, calling Isabela "our angel," and he insists on telling Mirabel about Bruno when she is concerned about being in one of his visions, in spite of Pepa's protests. He can also be protective of the younger members of the family, as seen when the house was collapsing, quickly saving Antonio from the falling debris and carrying him in his arms even after leaving the house. After the fall of the house, Félix carefully checks on Camilo's head to make sure he is not hurt (considering he tried to save the Miracle Candle earlier and almost suffered a hard fall) and then looks for Mirabel when she disappears. Physical appearance Félix is a dark-skinned Colombian-Afro-Latino man with poofy black hair that has a graying "skunk stripe," dark brown eyes, and a gray and black stubble of facial hair on his chin. Like Bruno, has a mustache and hair on his chin and face. Felix is a man with a large amount of chest hair and is stocky with very broad shoulders. He is also noticeably shorter than Pepa and is about the same height as Bruno or Julieta. His clothing is meant to reflect his personality and who he is; his traditional bright yellow guayabera decorated with triangles (a common South-American style of men's shirt) with red alforzas (a style of pleats) represents the stability he gives to his wife and children. Félix also wears orange striped pants tied with a belt and matching yellow sockless shoes. On his wedding day, he wore an exact copy of his current clothes only in white. Powers and abilities
Félix saving Antonio while avoiding the rubble of the ruined house. Having married into the family, Félix has no magical gift of his own. However, he can be quite agile and quick on his feet. During the fall of Casa Madrigal, Felix pulls Antonio out of the falling rubble with incredible reflexes and runs with him out of the ruined house while avoiding the falling pieces of the house. He is a very graceful dancer and has almost no problem in matching his wife's quick dance steps in "We Don't Talk About Bruno". Appearances Encanto
Félix after happily sharing a kiss with Pepa. Félix first appears waking up and joining his family for a stroll in the village. In "The Family Madrigal", Félix is introduced, along with his brother-in-law Agustín, by Mirabel. As Mirabel explains that he became part of the family by marrying Pepa, Félix shares a kiss with his wife. Since the day was also his younger son Antonio's fifth birthday and gift ceremony, Felix soon returned home to help prepare for the celebration. As Pepa became increasingly anxious about the ceremony, Félix tried to remind her that the tornado she was stirring up was messing up the flowers. Isabela appeared and helped Pepa calm down by giving her a bouquet of roses, while Félix called her "our angel" and Pepa thanks him. Later on Félix went out to look for Antonio, who had hidden because of the anxiety of the ceremony.
Félix encouraging his son Antonio when he gets his gift and a new room. Before Antonio's ceremony was about to begin, Félix greeted him joyfully and cheerfully shooed away one of Pepa's rainclouds so that Antonio wouldn't get wet. Félix criticized Camilo when he playfully turned into a miniature version of him and mocked his way speaking, responding with irritation when Camilo continued to make fun of him. Félix then joined Pepa at the top of the stairs next to Antonio's new door. The couple anxiously held hands as Antonio moved closer to their door to receive their gift, afraid the ceremony would fail. When the ceremony proved to be a success, Félix lovingly kissed his wife's hand and excitedly cheered Antonio on as the boy and his animal friends explored his new room. As the party moved into Antonio's magical bedroom, the Madrigals got together and a family photo was taken, which everyone unknowingly excluded Mirabel from. While dancing with his mother-in-law, Félix and everyone else heard from a panicked Mirabel that there were cracks in the Casita. When everyone came to investigate, the cracks weren't there and Alma ushered everyone back to the party.
Félix remembering and talking about their wedding day. The next morning, Félix appeared to scold Camilo for pretending to be his sister to get more food for breakfast. As the family sat down to eat, he calming Pepa when she became annoyed at Mirabel for stealing her chair and giving Antonio a thumbs up for trying to use his new gift to help his Abuela. Later that day, Félix overheard Pepa and Mirabel talking about Bruno. Félix burst in dramatically to tell Mirabel all about Bruno's powers, over his wife's objections. Félix told Mirabel that if Bruno prophesied that something terrible would happen, there was no changing it. As Pepa scolded both of them, reminding them that they don't talk about Bruno, Félix wrapped an arm around her waist and they began to tell about Bruno's teasing on her wedding day. In "We Don't Talk About Bruno" Felix constantly interrupted his wife to talk and kept his part of the conversation playful, saying that he considered his wedding to be a joyous day in spite of the weather and joining the verses of his other relatives.
Felix telling his wife about Bruno's vision. After helping his family set up the table for the Guzmáns' arrival, Félix scolded Camilo for shapeshifting very quickly, leaving a funny expression on his face, and told him to fix his face. After straightening his features, Camilo whispered in his ear that Mirabel had found Bruno's vision. Félix was taking a drink of water at the time and accidentally sprayed his drink across the table in shock, drenching Mariano's shirt. Félix then passed the information about Bruno's vision to Pepa, who then passed it on to Julieta. As the growing anxiety in the house caused everyone's magic to become erratic, Félix watched, bewildered and powerless to help, as his family began to lose control of their powers. After the failed dinner, as the cracks continued expanding and Alma argued with Julieta and Agustín, Félix attempted to help Pepa control a snowstorm over her head, sticking up for her when Alma told her to calm down.
Félix helping Pepa with her weather after the failed dinner. Later that same day, Félix and the rest family returned to courtyard to find Alma and Mirabel having a heated argument about Alma's unhealthy perfectionism. As the Casita started collapsing around them, Félix helped his wife keep her balance and cried out that the Miracle Candle was in danger. While others in the family rushed to save the candle, he watched in fear as the rest of the house crumble. Félix quickly rushed to save Antonio from some debris falling from the house and ran with him out of the ruined house. After the house completely collapsed, Félix carefully checked Camilo to make sure he wasn't hurt, having previously entered the house to try and save the candle. When Julieta noticed Mirabel went missing, the Madrigals and the other townspeople spread out to search for her.
Félix happy that Bruno has returned and calls him "bro". By the next day, Félix and the family saw that Mirabel and Alma (having made up with each other) returned to Casita's ruins, and he became angry when Camilo interrupting the reunion to dryly remind the optimistic Agustín that the Madrigals were still homeless. During "All of You", Alma revealed to the entire family that Bruno hid behind the rubble and they immediately accepted him back into the family. While Bruno apologized for what happened at their wedding, Félix was happy to see Bruno again, calling him "bro" and agreeing that Pepa should freely show her emotions. With family all together, Mirabel rallied them to fix the house and the entire town also pitched in as thanks for all the Madrigals had done for them. Félix joined in rebuilding the family home, laying bricks with Dolores and Antonio. After completing the house, Mirabel added a doorknob the family made just for her to the front door, which caused Casita to spring back to life, and the magic returned to the entire Encanto. The Madrigals then celebrated the returned of their home and gifts with a family picture.

He is the husband of Julieta Madrigal and father of Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel. Having married into the family, Agustín has no magical gift of his own. However, his accident-prone tendencies allow his wife to continuously refine her healing magic. Background When me and your Tio Félix married into the family, outsiders who had no gift, never ever would, surrounded by the exceptional, it was easy to feel... "un-ceptional".AGUSTÍN TELLING HIS EXPERIENCES IN THE FAMILY. Agustín's life before joining the Madrigal family is unknown, other than that his biological family still lives in Encanto. Due to being accident-prone, Agustín often needed to be healed quickly and that led him to meet the community healer Julieta, whose magical gift was to heal people through her cooking.[2] Unlike how she quickly accepted Félix as part in the Madrigals, Abuela Alma never got along with Agustín and was skeptical that he would fall in love with her daughter since Agustín was not Abuela's first choice to marry Julieta, besides judged him harshly for his clumsiness. But Julieta loved Agustín so much that the two eventually married and he became part of the Madrigal family.[3] Years later, Agustín and Julieta they had three daughters (Isabela, Luisa and Mirabel) together. In addition to becoming the brother-in-law of Félix, Pepa, and Bruno, is also the uncle of Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio. At present, Agustín still does not get along with his mother-in-law because she does not approve of Agustín being married to Julieta and cannot understand why her daughter chose him, trying to exclude Agustín from much of the family's affairs and making him feel excluded like Mirabel. Official Description Agustín is somewhat a fish out of water, having married into the magical family. Awkward and accident-prone, he always has the best intentions, especially when it comes to his daughters.[4]Agustín is an accident-prone person. He may be a slightly awkward fish out of water who married into the Madrigal family, but he is the perfect husband to Julieta, who has to heal his injuries.[5] Development As with the rest of the Madrigal family, Agustín was designed to reflect "family archetypes that are immediately relatable".[6] Of all the characters in the film, Agustín was the one who underwent the most changes and designs before reaching his final version. The studio initially, in addition to creating Agustín as the protagonist, was also to be the head patriarch of the Madrigal family and the one who built Casa Madrigal. However, this was changed due to a field guide on Colombia telling the studio that the local communities are matriarchal and the studio wanted the story to feature women, which led to the creation of Alma as the matriarch and Mirabel as the protagonist.[7] During the creation process, Agustín in other concepts originally had a messier hairstyle and sported a long mustache. Similar to the final product, Agustín looked like a "city man", coming from "somewhere similar to Bogotá", being well-put-together and wearing a suit. This makes him a "fish out of the water" in the Encanto, which is why he seems so awkward and dresses more formally than his in-laws.[8] Personality Having married into the family, Agustín has no magical gift of his own, and understands what it is like not to feel as though he belongs in the family. He tries his best to comfort his youngest daughter, Mirabel, due to her being the only Madrigal child (who was born in the family) without a magical gift. When he discovered Bruno's vision of Mirabel and their family home being destroyed, Agustín grew concerned about what would happen to the family and tried to keep it a secret, with the well-being of his youngest daughter being the only thing in his mind as he wanted to protect Mirabel from any shame brought upon her by their family and community. Agustín shares a close relationship with his wife, Julieta, where the two support each other and do their best to look after Mirabel whenever she is upset or facing issues over not having a magical gift. Agustín is also aware of how Alma treats Mirabel and is not afraid to stand up to his mother-in-law when she confronts him over keeping Bruno's vision a secret, saying that he was thinking about his daughter. This stems from how Agustín and Alma never got along and that she did not approve of him marrying her daughter, Julieta. While he is mostly seen with his wife and Mirabel, Agustín does seem to have a good relationship with his other family members (sans Abuela). He cares greatly about his other daughters, Luisa and Isabela, as he did look concerned over Luisa losing her gift and looked saddened and guilty when he found out his older daughters have been in a lot of pressure due to Alma's expectations. All in all, Agustín loves all of his family members and is willing to protect them, despite his clumsiness. Physical appearance Agustín is a tall and slender Latino man who wears glasses, a white suit, and a blue vest and tie. He also has slick gray-and-black hair, a pencil-thin mustache, and brown eyes. Parts of Agustín's clothes symbolize his daughters - a flower on his vest for Isabela, one sock with dumbbells for Luisa, and the other sock in the style of Mirabel's embroidery.[9] Appearances Encanto Agustín first appears with his family as they start their day and walk into the village. During "The Family Madrigal," Agustín and his brother-in-law, Félix Madrigal are introduced by Mirabel where Agustín shares a kiss with Julieta before he gets stung by a swarm of bees after dropping his axe into a beehive when attempting to chop wood. Agustín eventually returned to the Casita to help set up for Antonio's gift ceremony, and his face and hands were swollen because of the bee stings. When Mirabel returned home with party supplies given to her by Osvaldo, Julieta told Mirabel she didn't need to overdo it, and Agustín agreed with Julieta saying that Antonio's gift ceremony would be the first one since hers. He then goes on to tell Mirabel that when he and Félix married into the family, they were outsiders who do not and will not ever have a gift, consistently being surrounded by exceptional people, it was easy to feel "un-ceptional", concluding that he understands how she feels. Julieta gave Agustín some food to heal his bee stings which returned him to normal. Agustín agrees with Julieta's sentiment to Mirabel that she has nothing to prove. That same night, Agustín stands with the rest of his family as they watch Antonio receive his gift. When Antonio receives his gift and everyone enters into his new magical room, Agustín can be seen cheering as Antonio's new pet jaguar snuggles up next to him. Agustín then joins the rest of the family, except for Mirabel, for a family photo. After Mirabel had interrupted Antonio's party to warn everybody that the house was in danger, everyone followed her outside only to see that everything was fine. Agustín then had Luisa hold the piano for him as he played a song to help brighten the mood. The next morning, Agustín was getting a plate of food for breakfast, as some of Antonio's animals cling to him, and one of them stole his pocket watch. Later that day during the Madrigal portion of "We Don't Talk About Bruno", Agustín was shown helping the family set the table for dinner. Agustín then went into the nursery looking for Mirabel but stops dead in his tracks when he sees Bruno's vision slab on top of the dresser. Mirabel quickly explains that the magic is dying, the house is breaking and Luisa's gift is fading and she believes it's all because of her. After Agustín gets a better look at the vision, and he hears Alma call everyone down for dinner, Agustín insists to Mirabel that they don't say anything. He explains to Mirabel that Alma wants the night to be "perfect" and until the Guzmáns leave, they shouldn't mention anything about Bruno's vision. However, much to their dismay, they notice that Dolores was standing outside the entire time and she overheard them and it was clear to the both of them that Dolores was going to tell everybody. Agustín and Mirabel are both visibly nervous during dinner, trying to keep information about Bruno's vision from being revealed. When Mariano asked Mirabel if she was okay, Agustín says that everything is fine and Mirabel was just excited for Mariano to propose to her sister, and insists that Mariano should propose to Isabela as fast as he can. While watching Mariano propose to Isabela, Agustín didn't notice that some of Antonio's animals took the pieces of Bruno's vision from his pockets and assemble it into an empty picture frame. When the dinner ends poorly after everyone finds out what was in Bruno's last vision, everyone leaves the dining room, and Agustín chases after Luisa, who runs out crying. Sometime later, Agustín is being scolded by Alma for keeping information about Bruno's vision to himself, telling him that he should've said something as soon as he saw the vision and he should think about the family. Agustín then tells Alma that he was thinking about his daughter, and Julieta also rebukes Alma for her harsh treatment towards Mirabel. When Alma leaves the house to reassure the townspeople, she tells Agustín and Julieta that they need to find Mirabel. Later, Agustín and Julieta gather with the rest of the family in the courtyard hearing an argument between Alma and Mirabel. When the house starts cracking and the candle starts fading, Mirabel tries to save the candle, while the Casita forces everybody back. Agustín and Julieta try desperately to get to Mirabel, but the house throws everyone outside. While standing outside watching Mirabel, Agustín and Julieta yell for Mirabel to hurry and get out of the house. After the Casita falls and Mirabel disappears, Julieta and Agustín, as well as the rest of the family, search for her. When Mirabel returned with Alma and Bruno, Julieta was happy to see their daughter, while Agustín, whose face and hands were swollen because of bee stings, told Mirabel that there were bees everywhere but he'll be okay. After Mirabel leads the family into the song "All of You", Agustín gives Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno a group hug after Bruno is re-introduced to the family, happily singing that the triplets were reunited. Agustín works with the family and the rest of the townspeople to rebuild the Casita. After some time when the Casita is rebuilt, Agustín watches, along with his family and the townspeople as Mirabel restores the magic. Agustín then gathers with his family for a complete family portrait and says the family chant "La Familia Madrigal".

Background Perfect golden child Isabela was the first grandchild of the amazing Madrigal family. On her fifth birthday, she received the gift of creating flowers, greenery, trees, grass- pretty much any kind of plant! Effortlessly beautiful and always creating magical blooms, Isabela made her family proud, especially Abuela.DESCRIPTION OF ISABELA'S LIFE UPON RECEIVING HER GIFT.[1] Born into the Madrigal family, Isabela is the eldest daughter of Julieta and Agustín, and the older sister of Luisa and Mirabel. In addition to being the niece of Félix, Pepa, and Bruno, Isabela is also the cousin of Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio. Being the oldest of her cousins, she is the firstborn grandchild of the Madrigals and the favorite of her Abuela Alma. In the early years of her life, Isabela lived in the nursery with her cousin Dolores who is a few weeks younger than her, and eventually her younger sister Luisa who is two years younger than her. When Bruno was still with the family, Isabela received a vision from her uncle who told her that someday Isabela would be able to live the life of her dreams, and he also told her that her powers would "grow like the grapes that thrive on the vine". On the night of Isabela's fifth birthday, she received the gift of Chlorokinesis (plant manipulation) and she moved out of the nursery into her new room. After she received her magical gift, Alma placed very high expectations on Isabela as her first grandchild and this forced Isabela to have to be the "perfect golden child" of the family.[2] Due to the pressure, Isabela grew up with the enormous pressure of having to meet the expectations of others and hid her insecurities so as not to disappoint her family. Isabela is graceful, and Mirabel describes her as "effortlessly perfect". Because of her looks and talent, she is betrothed to a local man who is equally good-looking, Mariano Guzmán. It's later revealed that she didn't want to be perfect, nor does she want to marry Mariano and in reality, she was only doing it to please people and her family. With Mirabel's help, Isabela is able to finally show her true self and experiment with her powers. When she feels free from the restraint of familial expectations, she can grow new, different varieties of plants that spray different colors of powder, changing her appearance to show how she is becoming more honest with herself and freeing herself from the pressure of having to be perfect all the time. Official Description Isabela is Mirabel's older sister who is smart and brilliant. She is so perfect that flowers start to bloom with every footstep she takes. This leads to a complicated relationship with imperfect Mirabel as everything Isabela does seems to be a success.[3]Isabela is the golden child of the Madrigal family. Graceful, pretty, and poetic, her gift is the ability to make flowers bloom. She never needs to practice and is stuck expecting to be perfect her whole life. Behind the smile, Isabela is much more complex and feels trapped by her role.[4] Development As with the rest of the Madrigal family, Isabela was designed to reflect "family archetypes that are immediately relatable".[5] As in the final production, the studio created Isabela from the start as the perfect golden child and thus the pride of the family. Incorporating a subtle undercurrent of anxiety at the same time and hiding her imperfections while she was trying so hard to portray the image of perfection for Abuela Alma.[6] For her appearance, the floral design of her initial dress' flowery design was influenced by those worn by women doing Bambuco dance while for her final dress several different designs were explored for the change with more striking colors and flowers. During the creation process, the studio also was inspired by different Colombian beauty pageant models to create Isabela's delicate movements and the way she interacts with others.[7] Isabela's gift originated from a consultant's request for Encanto to prominently feature nature as a main element in the film due to the popularity of Colombian flowers and that Colombians considered it to be a great source of pride. An early concept for her gift was the ability to bring plants to life, such as cultivating a race of sentient, walking potatoes who lived in the Casita and dressed in traditional farming clothes.[8] Isabela was also originally involved in a romantic subplot with a small nerdy man from the city named Bubo, having to keep their relationship secret due to Abuela Alma not approving of it.[9][10] Her relationship with Bubo was eliminated, thus eliminating the character from the film to replace him for Mariano Guzmán, since the studio didn't want to show that a man had to define Isabela's path and instead she is her own person and could find herself, while many people even commented that he is the continuation of the 'hot girl, dorky guy' trope which some are considering a toxic, unrealistic message that has been peddled to audiences for decades.[11] Voice American actress and voice actress Diane Guerrero was chosen to voice the character of Isabela. According to director Byron Howard, Isabela is a difficult role to play because her voice had to be amusing and charming but at the same time refined and elegant to portray Isabela's role as the perfect golden child of the family. Guerrero felt honored to be able to provide her voice in Encanto, since being a film with characters of Colombian descent, she felt represented and said that it was a dream come true to participate in a Disney film. A few weeks before the film's premiere on Disney+, Guerrero confessed that she instantly understood the reason why she was chosen to play Isabela, since she somehow identified with the character, saying: "When I was a little girl, I grew up watching Disney movies and I watched Disney princesses, and I lived in that magical fantasyland as a kid and I always wanted to be a princess. Any time my mom told me that I was a princess, I truly believed it. It was something that I really desperately wanted to embody, and yet I didn't understand what really makes a princess, which is what you feel inside and your courage to speak up for yourself."[12][13] Diane Guerrero described her character: "Isabela was sort of given the role of kind of being perfect, and her gift is to grow, make things grow, plants and beautiful flowers. And so, I guess with this gift sort of came the expectation that she just sort of had to be perfect, and just sew, and make beautiful, and sort of, she uses it kind of like a defense mechanism, something that has worked for her for so long. But I think she discovers that you know, when you're growing up, and you're an actual, real human being, that perfection really isn't sustainable."[14] Personality
Isabela dancing and singing happily with Pepa despite the imminent proposal. Isabela is primarily known for being graceful, beautiful, and even "perfect", both inside and out, by everyone. Although she was initially not close with some members of her family, Isabela cares for them and wants to do whatever it takes to make them proud. Willing to sacrifice her life and happiness for her family, showing her selfless and loyal side. Of her sisters, Isabela is the closest to her aunt; treating Pepa very lovingly and helping her calm down when she is nervous. Growing up together, Isabela treats her younger cousin's by a few weeks like a third sister. During Antonio's gift ceremony, she holds Dolores' hand while hugging her reassuringly and is proud of her cousin when she confesses her feelings for the man she loves. As the two were initially under constant pressure, Isabela admires Luisa's emotional strength and is on good terms with her, worrying about her younger sister when she is sad. She is one of the few people who doesn't have a negative opinion of her infamous uncle Bruno, partially due to him telling her a positive vision in her future. Isabela is also cordial and kind to the townspeople, she happily plants different plants as part of her service to the village and welcomes them to the house.
Isabela stressed by having to meet Alma's expectations. Although not explicitly stated, she has a taste for romance and love. While Isabela doesn't love Mariano, she does hope to marry someday, apart from being incredibly happy when Dolores and Mariano become a couple.[15] She is referred to as an angel by the family for her grace, and is beloved by the town. However, deep down, Isabela doesn't appreciate the expectations her Abuela Alma sets upon her to be perfect. Instead, she wants to live life the way she wants to, and expand her power based on what she wants and not what the family wants. Unfortunately, due to the pressure of being the "perfect golden child", Isabela hides these feelings away and willingly goes along with whatever her Abuela wants for her. Afraid of letting Alma and her family down, she hides her insecurities and how miserable she is from the people around her to the point of practicing how to look happy when she interacts with others and even agreeing to get married to Mariano, whom she doesn't love.[16] This was also seen when flowers grew in her hair when Dolores said that Mariano wants to have five babies with her and was left speechless, and when Camilo teases her by shapeshifting into Mariano, only for an unfazed Isabela to throw flowers into his face.
Isabela remodeling her appearance and being herself. To further add to the pressure, Isabela has always been afraid of expressing her insecurities to others and due to this she is initially shown to have a distant relationship with her relatives. Being Alma's favorite grandchild, Isabela's sisters and cousins feel inadequate living in her shadow and therefore some of them would not have a good opinion of her and would express visible annoyance towards Isabela, such as making jokes to annoy her or looking at her with envy. Isabela especially does not get along with Mirabel. Both sisters are mutually jealous of each other's lives; Mirabel feels like she never received the same love from Alma as Isabela did, while Isabela envies Mirabel for her freedom from having to deal with the high expectations placed on her. Unaware of how unhappy the other was than they let on, Isabela had a strained relationship with her. Isabela would be distasteful towards her youngest sister in their interactions and later on smugly making Mirabel apologize for "ruining" her life, showing a temperamental and petty side to her. However, when she finally released her emotions, after Mirabel calls her a "selfish, entitled princess", and grew a cactus, Isabela became more expresses with her true feelings and expanded her powers, reconciles with Mirabel and grows a better sisterly relationship with her.
Isabela shamefully looks at her Abuela Alma, knowing that she will never be perfect enough. The moment Alma yells at her and Mirabel about the mess they caused in the town while they sang, Isabela goes from confident and happy to scared and ashamed. She even tries to brush off the dye caked on her dress, showing how scared Isabela is of making Alma disappointed. When Alma blames Mirabel for the family's problems, all Luisa and Isabela can do was shamefully look down, which also shows that Alma views them no different from the way she views Mirabel. As Mirabel defends Luisa and Isabela by pointing out that they will never be good enough for Alma or her expectations, no matter how hard they try, Isabela, along with Luisa avoids looking at Alma but looks incredibly hurt, indicating she knows that Mirabel is right that she can never be perfect as Alma wishes. Once Alma apologizes to the family for pressuring them to be perfect and Bruno returns to them, Isabela happily works alongside her family and the community in rebuilding the house, while her relationship with her sisters, as well as the rest of her family members, grew more loving and affectionate as they worked together. With the house and family magic restored, Isabela becomes a happier person, no longer constrained by expectations and constant pressure to be the best, she is free to experiment with her powers and express herself. Physical appearance
Isabela in her initial dress (left), in her dress after being herself (center), and in her current dress (right). Isabela is a 21-year-old young Colombian woman with deep brown skin, dark hazel eyes, a tear-shaped beauty mark on her left cheek, and waist-length straight black hair with a pink orchid flower on the left side, and gold floral drop earrings with light violet pearls. While they have notable differences in skin complexion and facial structures, Isabela is otherwise practically the granddaughter most similar to Abuela Alma (in her younger years) and inheriting several of her physical traits. Her makeup consists of reddish-brown lipstick as well as rosy blush. Isabela wears a lilac, frilled and layered dress decorated with flowers pink, purple, and light blue (symbolizing her gift), and matching lilac lace-up espadrilles. After her transformation during the course of "What Else Can I Do?", her dress was painted in various colors (yellow, red, blue, the colors of the Colombian flag, like the umbrellas in "We Don't Talk About Bruno" during Pepa and Félix's verse) with the main color dark blue, with matching flowers, and her hair has yellow, green, and blue streaks in it, with an orange flower replacing the previous pink blossom. The flowers on her dress and the one in her hair are cattleya trianae orchid, also known as "may lilies" or "may flowers". Towards the end of the film, her dress becomes a much lighter indigo, with the other colors remaining as splatters on the bottom, the tips of her hair were green and blue, and a vine-like accessory is added onto her right arm. After the events of the film, Isabela will constantly change her appearance because now that she no longer has to worry about the expectations of others, she feels free to experiment with her powers and be herself.[17] Powers and abilities
After experimenting with her magical gift, Isabela can grow other types of plants besides beautiful flowers. Chlorokinesis: Isabela has the power of Chlorokinesis; she can make plants grow and flowers bloom.[18] She can also manipulate plant life and can grow other things besides flowers, such as fruit trees and crops.[19] Originally when she had to be perfect, Isabela only grew vines and beautiful, symmetrical flowers, such as roses. Showing the capability of conjuring flowers either by waving her hands, twirling her feet, and even flicking her hair while having the flowers appear within her range or travel across the surface of an area. But after she began to be herself, began experimenting with her gift and discovered that she could grow other kinds of plants as well, such as cacti, trees, like palma de cera or wax palm, and even carnivorous plants, like sundew. It's also seen that she can grow dyed versions of exotic plants, like if you look closely there's a purple-colored cactus. Isabela has quite a bit of control over her gift, as she can create any plant she wants just by thinking about it. Despite the great control she has over her gift, her powers also appear to be linked to her emotions and thus she can lose control of her power. Although not to her aunt Pepa's extent, sometimes strong emotions can trigger Isabela's gift: when Dolores mentions Mariano's desire to have five babies with Isabela, she is shocked and flowers sprout in her hair involuntarily, and in her argument with Mirabel for ruining the proposal dinner causes her to grow a cactus and leads her to realize she can grow more than pretty flowers. • Other skills: Isabela is very nimble and quick on her feet. When she was expressing her true self, she displayed impressive levels of athleticism such as moving with great ease and coordination on the roof of the house, a difficult area to move in, while singing and dancing. She also moves very skillfully with vines. As her powers are related to plants, Isabela has a great knowledge of different plants and has some skill in the gardening, leading her sisters to plant some cacti while they rebuild the house. Appearances Encanto
Isabela using her gift to make flowers bloom everywhere. Isabela's first appearance is in a flashback where Abuela Alma explains to a five-year-old Mirabel about how their family was blessed with magic and how the Miracle Candle will give each family member a magical gift on their fifth birthday. In the present, Isabela is introduced as she gets out of bed, her hair blowing in the wind. She prepares to start the day and heading to the village with the rest of her family to help around. While The Madrigals are in town, Isabela was seen dancing along with the rest of her family and growing a vast array of flowers in the village. During "The Family Madrigal", Mirabel describes her to the Town Kids as perfect and the golden child of the family, and at the same time Isabela is lovingly kissed on the cheek by her Abuela Alma and grows several beautiful roses while Mariano Guzmán watches her with admiration. The moment Mirabel introduces Mariano to the Town Kids, Isabela simply walks next to they, ignoring them. Since the day was also her youngest cousin's, Antonio, fifth birthday and gift ceremony, Isabela soon returns home to help prepare for the celebration.
When Pepa is stressed, Isabela appears to calm her down by giving her flowers. Isabela begins to place beautiful roses around the Casa Madrigal for Antonio's special day, asking her relatives which parts of the house need more flowers. When Pepa started panicking about Antonio's gift ceremony, causing her to create a mini hurricane and damage the flowers, Isabela showed up to calm her aunt down. She dramatically swinging down from the upper level of the house on a vine and growing more flowers to replace the ones Pepa accidentally ruined, with the townspeople looking on in admiration and applauding as Mirabel looks at her in disgust. When she lands, she gives her aunt a bouquet of flowers with a smile to help her calm down from her and Pepa thanks her while Félix calls her "our angel". After they leave, Isabela accidentally flips her hair in Mirabel's face and when she notices her presence, Isabela rolls her eyes and tells Mirabel that if she wasn't trying so hard she wouldn't always be in the way as a form of "sisterly advice". Mirabel tries to tell Isabela that she's helping, while Isabela proceeds to walk away and roll her eyes as her youngest sister was about to walk into a pole.
Isabela irritated when she thinks that Mirabel wants to ruin Antonio's gift ceremony. Before Antonio's gift ceremony later in the day, Isabela is dancing and welcoming the guests while she is creating flowers to train the guests before Antonio's ceremony begins. When it was time for her cousin to walk to his door to receive his magical gift, Isabela joined her other relatives to listen intently to Abuela Alma's speech about the candle that blessed her family, while at the same time she holds Dolores' hand. When Mirabel goes to help Antonio to his door when asked by him, Isabela looks on in annoyance due to worrying that Mirabel was going to mess it up. After Antonio received his magical gift, Isabela waved her hands in a jump of joy and was impressed when Antonio rode his jaguar in his new room. As the party moved into Antonio's magical bedroom, Abuela gathered the family for a photo to celebrate Antonio's gift, which everyone unknowingly excluded Mirabel from. While dancing with Mariano at the celebration party, they heard from a panicked Mirabel that there were cracks in the Casita. When everyone came to investigate and the cracks weren't there, Isabela expresses her dislike for Mirabel because she thought she was envious of Antonio's successful ceremony and wanted to ruin the day.
Without Alma realizing it, Isabela is nervous about her marriage proposal. The next morning, Isabela joined the rest of her family for breakfast and sat down next to Dolores and Camilo. As she prepared to eat, Alma announces to the family that she had spoken with the Guzmáns about Mariano's proposal to Isabela. Throughout the conversation, Isabela is visibly nervous about the prospect of getting married to Mariano, especially when Dolores reveals that Mariano plans to propose to her that same night and adds that he wants five babies, which makes Isabela sprout nervous flowers on her head. While removing an imperfect flower from Isabela's head, Abuela comments that the pair would bring a new generation of "magical blessings" and make both families stronger, much to Isabela's discomfort. When Alma finished speaking, Camilo shapeshifts into Mariano and made kissy faces to tease Isabela, which she responded by flicking flowers into his mouth. At the conclusion of breakfast, Isabela joins everyone in the family chant "La Familia Madrigal" and expresses annoyance for Mirabel when accidentally walks into her while trying to chase Luisa, who left the table in a hurry.
Isabela swinging on her vine while singing about Bruno. Later, Isabela joined her family in "We Don't Talk About Bruno" after the townspeople verse to talk about her missing uncle Bruno. Being old enough to remember him before he left, she is clearly aware that, contrary to what many people say, Bruno is a good person and she does not say anything negative about him. As she swings on a vine and the townspeople look at her in admiration, Isabela in her verses recounts a vision that Bruno gave her when she was young about how she's guaranteed to live her dream life, as well as him telling her what her power was going to be. When Alma takes the Guzmán family to the Casa Madrigal for the impending marriage proposal dinner, she climbs down from the vine and tells Mirabel that she doesn't want to hear her say anything during dinner, while Dolores in the background reveals that she is secretly in love with Mariano. After Camilo informed the family that Abuela was coming with the Guzmáns to the house, Isabela helped her family prepare the table for dinner while danced happily with Pepa, constantly repeating to herself that she was fine with her engagement to Mariano, although she is clearly suffering.
Isabela nervous when Mariano Guzmán tries to propose to her during the awkward dinner. At the moment when everything was ready for the impending proposal, Isabela sits in between Mariano and Mirabel. She fakes a smile when Alma and Señora Guzmán expressed their happiness at the imminent union between the families, and often glares at when her relatives begin to act strangely, not knowing that it is due to their fear of Bruno's vision about the impending destruction of the house. Isabela is visibly confused when her father Agustín tries to rush Mariano and get him to propose faster. Isabela is also irritated when Mirabel interrupts Mariano's proposal, but she has a worried face when Luisa starts crying over the loss of her super strength. When Mariano tries to propose, Isabela has a forced smile on her face, while Dolores proclaimed that the family were all doomed. As dinner starts spiraling out of control with the spread of Bruno's vision about the magic fading and Pepa started forming a thundercloud, Isabela freaks out as various cracks begin to appear around the house and briefly loses control of her powers, using a plant to accidentally break Mariano's nose. After the dinner is ruined and everyone leaves the dining room, Isabela walks past Mirabel and proclaims that she hates her.
Isabela demands that Mirabel apologize for "ruining" her life. While chasing some rats, Mirabel finds Bruno hiding within the house's walls while chasing the rats that had stolen the fragments of the vision showing her destroying the house. Mirabel convinces Bruno to make another vision in order to save the miracle, Bruno's prediction shows Isabela and Mirabel hugging as the candle glows brighter and the cracks in the house disappear, much to Bruno's joy and Mirabel's annoyance. To fulfill this vision, Mirabel enters Isabela's room to talk things out with her, saying that she knows they've had their issues, but she was ready to be a better sister and they should just hug it out. Isabela gets annoyed with Mirabel, pointing out that Luisa has grown so weak that she can't even lift an empanada, and that Mariano's nose, which is now broken, looks like a smashed papaya. When Mirabel tries to get close to get a hug, Isabela blocks her way with her vines and tells her to get out. She tells Mirabel that everything was perfect for her proposal and that their Abuela was happy as well as the rest of the family and that if Mirabel wanted to be a better sister, she should apologize for "ruining" her life. When Mirabel sarcastically apologizes for Isabela's life being so great, Isabela uses her vines to drag Mirabel out of her room.
Isabela shocked by the creation of an "imperfect" plant for the first time. When she does this, Mirabel tries to break free of the vines, insisting that she's sorry and that she wasn't trying to ruin her life, but there are much bigger problems to deal with. Isabela is shocked when Mirabel refers to her as a "selfish entitled princess" and tells Mirabel that she was "stuck being perfect" all her life and all Mirabel has ever done is mess things up for her. Mirabel tells her things aren't messed up and she can still get married to Mariano, but Isabela reveals that she never wanted to marry him and she was only doing it for the family. After this confession, Isabela accidentally grows a cactus, which she is stunned at due to its faults and wonders how she made such an "imperfect" plant. Isabela then opens up about her desire to be imperfect in "What Else Can I Do?", and while Mirabel encourages her to be herself, Isabela begins to get along with her better. When they are on the roof of the Casita, Isabela begins creating more exotic, flesh-eating plants all over the town, unintentionally hitting Mariano's nose again, and staining her dress from the bright fumes that comes out of a colorful plant, unaware that Alma looked on in disgust as Isabela was "losing" control of her powers.
Isabela happily thanks Mirabel for helping her be herself. Finally free of the expectations that tormented her, Isabela hugs Mirabel and thanks her for helping her be herself, fulfilling Bruno's vision. Both sisters watch as the Miracle Candle begins to shine brightly and the cracks disappear before jumping to the floor of the house. Upon landing, Isabela playfully tells Mirabel that she's a bad influence. Isabela's joy quickly turns to fear as Alma comes into the house angrily demanding to know what's happening. Isabela stands silently before walking off to the side as Mirabel tries to explain what was going on. As Alma berates their sister for all the family's troubles because she wasn't given a gift, Isabela and Luisa, who were equally hurt by how little Alma thinks of them, shamefully looks down. As their parents stand by their side, Isabela and Luisa avoids looking at Alma when Mirabel defends them by saying that they will never be good enough for Alma, even with their gifts and points out that Isabela won't be perfect enough for her. Isabela and the rest of the family see how Alma and Mirabel's argument escalate to into a fight with yelling and accusations that the other was the one hurting the family.
Isabela in shock realizing that her powers are gone. As the Casita started collapsing around them and the Miracle Candle about to fall from its window, Isabela joined Mirabel and Camilo in trying to retrieve the Miracle Candle despite the danger it posed, because the candle is what keeps the Casa Madrigal alive and all her life Abuela Alma has told them that it's the most important object in the Encanto. She tried swinging on her vine to reach the candle from Alma's window, but as the house continued to crack and fall apart, until the cracks reach her door, Isabela's powers fade, her vine disappears, and she falls to the floor. When she landed, Isabela looks around as her plants die and both she and Camilo realized that they had lost their gifts. Casita then quickly pushed Isabela and the family out, except Mirabel, before it fully crumbled down, though she was able to reach the candle, but as the crumbling ended, the candle's long-lit flame dies in her hands. When her mother Julieta noticed Mirabel went missing, the Madrigals and the other townspeople spread out to search for her.
Isabela and Mirabel hugging Luisa when she reveals that sometimes she cries. By the next day, Isabela and the family saw that Mirabel and Alma (who reconcile with each other) returned to Casita's ruins and during "All of You" as Alma apologizes to her family for holding on too tight, fearing she would lose them too after losing Pedro, and refines the miracle as simply themselves rather than the magic, she also beckons Bruno hiding behind the debris to rejoin the family. Although Isabela is briefly confused by the sudden return of her uncle, she along with the rest of the family have accepted him back into the family. With the family all together, Mirabel rallied them to fix the house and the entire town also pitched in as thanks for all the Madrigals had done for them over the decades. While helping to rebuild the Casa Madrigal, Isabela is working with her sisters fixing the walls of the house and comments that it's a dream when they work together while she compliments her sister, Luisa's strength. Isabela and Mirabel proceed to give Luisa a comforting hug when she admits that she cries sometimes, saying that they cry too. Isabela then says she needs sunlight and fertilizer, and along with her younger sisters plants new cacti saying that they should plant something new and watch it grow.
Isabela creating a new variety of exotic plants. Isabela also watches as Mirabel introduces Dolores to Mariano, and she along with Mirabel watch from behind a donkey as their cousin begins to confess her feelings for Mariano. When Mariano reciprocates Dolores' feelings, Isabela jumps with joy for Dolores and Mariano, high-fiving Mirabel when the two become a couple. After completing the Casa Madrigal, Mirabel added a doorknob the family made just for her to the front door, causing a new source of magic to be born that brings Casita back to life and returning the gifts of the Madrigals, but also making a new front door with all the Madrigals carved into it, including those who married into the family, Félix and Agustín. Then Casita takes everyone inside and Isabela then proceeds to remodel her dress again as well as create a new variety of exotic plants, no longer considered "perfect". The family then celebrated the returned of their home and gifts with a family picture. Isabela stood next to her mother and Luisa as they posed for the photo and when everyone smiled shouting "La Familia Madrigal", Casita unexpectedly crushed the entire family, creating an imperfect family image.

Born into the Madrigal family, Dolores is the eldest daughter of Félix and Pepa, and the older sister of Camilo and Antonio. In addition to being the niece of Julieta, Bruno, and Agustín, Dolores is also the cousin of Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel. In the early years of her life, Dolores lived in the nursery with her cousins Isabela, who is only a few weeks older than her, and possibly Luisa who is two years younger than her. When Bruno was still with the family, Dolores received a vision from her uncle who told her that the "man of her dreams" would be out of her reach because he would be engaged to someone else, causing her a great fear that would haunt throughout the years. When Isabela turned five and received her magical gift, she moved into her own room, and Dolores was left in the nursery with Luisa until her own fifth birthday a little while later. On the night of Dolores' fifth birthday, she received the gift of enhanced hearing and she moved out of the nursery into her new room. Dolores has inside information on everyone in the family and "knows everyone's dirt" through her enhanced hearing, but she is always quiet and does not appear to be much of a gossip. She has a hard time keeping the secrets that she hears with her gift and has to cover her ears every time she hears noises that are too loud. Despite the negative view her uncle gave her when she was young, Dolores listened to Mariano Guzmán and learned more and more about him to the point of falling in love with the man. However, because Mariano was chosen as Isabela's soon-to-be fiancé by the will of her Abuela Alma, Dolores did not have the courage to confess her feelings to him for fear of rejection. Thanks to Isabela never loving Mariano, while everyone in the town was rebuilding the Casita, Dolores finally had the courage to confess her true feelings to the man of her dreams, to which he corresponds. Official description Dolores is who's usually the first to know the town's biggest secrets, most compelling drama, and juiciest revelations. Gifted with the magical ability of extraordinary hearing, Dolores often hears things that she shouldn't, which gets her into a lot of trouble. But she is always trying to be helpful.[1][2]Dolores is the only daughter of Pepa and Félix. Because she was born just after the perfect cousin Isabela, Dolores feels like she only exists in her shadow. Dolores has the gift of superhuman hearing. She overhears everything people are saying and shares what she hears, but no one asks her what she thinks.[3] Development As with the rest of the Madrigal family, Dolores was designed to reflect "family archetypes that are immediately relatable".[4] The studio originally created Dolores with the ability to heal people with food, but this power was instead given to Julieta due to her maternal personality.[5] One of the most difficult things when designing Dolores was her appearance. During the creation process, the studio focused mainly on fixing Dolores's hair while for her clothing they were influenced by Félix's Caribbean heritage comes through in her loose blouse and skirt with red highlights, inspired by the cumbian dress.[6] Voice American urban reggaeton singer, Adassa, was chosen to voice the character of Dolores. Despite being Adassa's first role on the big screen, having years of experience in the music industry and being nicknamed the "Reggaetón Princess" thanks to her ability to sing in both English and Spanish, it was not difficult for the singer-songwriter to adapt to the cast of Encanto and give his acting debut at Disney. On the day of recording her verses for the song "We don't talk about Bruno", the actress successfully recorded her verses in one take and just did other takes for the fun of it, much to Lin-Manuel Miranda's surprise.[7] Adassa, Dolores' voice actress, describes her character: "I absolutely love the character. I think that Charise Castro Smith, and Byron Howard, and Jared Bush did an amazing job writing this character, because she has all the secrets, she can hear everything. But sometimes, you know, her well-placed heart is a little bit out of order when she kind of speaks up and she can't help it."[8] Personality
Dolores enjoys hearing some rumors in the town. Described as "a little bit quiet", Dolores while not entirely stoic, is the least emotional of the family. She speaks or sings as low as a whisper and unlike her outgoing younger brother Camilo and their energetic parents, Dolores does not enjoy being the center of attention and prefers to stay in the background. Dolores also seems to enjoy helping others, especially her family. She on different occasions uses her enhanced hearing when someone asks her to know or find out something. Although with her gift she ends up causing problems or causing different disasters with the things she knows, Dolores is not ill-intentioned since she only tries to be useful, like a large part of her family. Due to the nature of her gift, Dolores has a tendency to expose people's secrets even if she does not want to, such as when she blurted out to the village kids that her cousin, Mirabel, did not have a magical gift. Despite her nature of exposing secrets, she never told anyone that Bruno still lived in the walls due to the fear others had of him and his powers.
Dolores having a rare moment of emotional weakness. While she is generally calm and quiet, Dolores can have rare moments of stress and emotional weakness that are in stark contrast to her normally stoic personality. Her gift causes her incredible discomfort and suffering, causing her to cover her ears when they are too loud for her. Dolores’ powers also gives her a reputation as a busybody and forces her to keep others' secrets constantly, something that clearly makes it hard for her to pull off. After finding out the truth about Bruno's vision of the future fall of the Casita and the death of magic, she was so scared that during the dinner of proposal she told her brother as soon as she could, causing a chain of gossip that eventually led to everyone knowing what she knew. Her stress reached such a degree that she even shouted during dinner that the family was doomed. Although she does not do it to the same extent as Camilo, Dolores sometimes seems to enjoy making jokes or sarcastic comments. At breakfast, she gives Isabela a snooty look after scaring her by telling her that Mariano wanted to have five babies with her and proudly admits to Camilo that she always knew that Bruno never left.
Dolores happy to be with the man of her dreams and not having to hide her feelings. Dolores, in addition to being quite quiet, initially also tends not to express her thoughts and feelings often. Because Bruno told her that the man of her dreams will be engaged to someone else when she was just a little girl, Dolores could never confess her love for Mariano believing that he could never be by her side and lost hope. Dolores did not confess to anyone directly that she was in love with Mariano and tried to hide her feelings to the point that for much of "We Don't Talk About Bruno" she has to constantly tell herself that she is okay with Isabela and Mariano's engagement, even though she was clearly suffering and depressed at the thought. However, thanks to the fact that the family was able to reunite during the reconstruction of the Casita and resolve their issues, in "All of You" Dolores was finally able to confess her feelings to Mariano and begin a relationship with him. She did not want to keep hiding her feelings, because when she had the opportunity Dolores immediately told Mariano what she loved about him and was overjoyed that he reciprocated her feelings, as well as being happy that she was no longer able to keep her opinions and emotions to herself (much to the joy of her cousins).
Dolores lovingly caring for her frightened Abuela Alma. She shares a close relationship with her family and can become protective of them. Dolores is mostly seen around her younger brothers and is shown to be close to them. Although she shares a typical sibling relationship with Camilo, she doesn't actually seem too bothered by her brother's antics compared to Isabela. When the Casita begins to crumble, Dolores instinctively puts her arm around Camilo in an attempt to protect him, though she can't stop him from running to save the Miracle Candle. Dolores obediently obeys Alma when she orders her to know something and after the Casita collapses, she takes care of her frightened Abuela and sits her on a small piece of debris to calm her down. Even when Bruno gave her a vision that caused her insecurities since she was a child, she never had a negative opinion of her uncle. As singing about him, she seems genuinely sympathetic about his powers compared to much of the family and doesn't portray him as a bad person. Dolores is even very close to Isabela despite living in her shadow all her life and willing to help Mirabel a helping hand in investigating the cause of the magic dying. After the magic had died, causing Mirabel to run away, she was concerned for her cousin and helped look for her. Physical appearance Dolores is a 21-year-old[9] Colombian young lady with curly brown hair, brown eyes and she has dark skin. Of her siblings, Dolores is the one who most resembles her mother, as she inherits her physical features and facial expressions. She wears a white and yellow shirt with golden-colored trimming on it with red fabric going through the collar and sleeves, a long red skirt with yellow and light-red streaks, a red choker with a golden gem adorned with a ruby on the middle of it, and heart-shaped golden earrings, and red espadrilles. She also wears red lipstick and wears a big red bow on her hair, which she wears in a bun. Symbolizing her super hearing, Dolores' clothes have many sound waves on her shirt, skirt (along with flower-like symbols with them), and bow. Powers and Abilities Oh, I have no idea, but there is one person in this family who hears everything about everything...MIRABEL TO THE CASA MADRIGAL ABOUT DOLORES. Enhanced Hearing: Dolores has the power of enhanced hearing, her ears are strong enough to hear even the quietest noise, such as the sound of a pin dropping and even the sound of someone's eye twitching. With her gift, she even has inside information on all of her family members and the townspeople.[10] Dolores hearing also works over great distances, she is able to receive messages from people all the way in town from Casa Madrigal, as seen when she reported Mariano's family coming for dinner. However, her gift's one drawback is that she apparently doesn't do well in noisy environments, as she was seen holding her hands over her ears as everyone else cheered for Antonio or when cracks began to appear around the Casita. Appearances Encanto
Dolores tells the kids that Mirabel didn't get a gift. Dolores's first appearance is in a flashback where Abuela Alma explains to a five-year-old Mirabel about how their family was blessed with magic and how the Miracle Candle will give each family member a magical gift on their fifth birthday. In the present, Dolores is seen getting ready to start the day and heading to the village with the rest of her family to help around. During "The Family Madrigal", Dolores suddenly appears whenever Mirabel mentions her to the Town Kids and listening with her enhanced hearing to some village rumors from great distances. Since the day was also her youngest brother's, Antonio, fifth birthday and gift ceremony, Dolores soon returned home to help prepare for the celebration. When Mirabel was concluding her talk about her family to the Town Kids before being interrupted by Abuela Alma, who was standing by the door of the Casa Madrigal, one of the kids told Alma that Mirabel was about to tell her and the rest of the kids about her magical gift, only for Dolores to suddenly appear at her Abuela's side and tell the kids that Mirabel didn't receive one before suddenly leaving. While preparing Antonio's gift ceremony, Alma ordered Dolores to listen at what time some guests were arriving at Antonio's party.
Dolores notifying her family that Alma says it is time for Antonio's ceremony to begin. Later Dolores joined her family to greet Antonio and give him some encouragement to relax. Before the gift ceremony begins, Dolores smiles warmly at Antonio and encourages him along with the rest of her family as she wishes him luck. While her parents and Camilo were talking to Antonio, Dolores tells everyone that Alma says it's time to start. After leaving the place they were in earlier, she joined her other relatives to watch Antonio's ceremony and Dolores was affectionately holding hands with Isabela as they stand with the rest of their family listening as Alma gives her speech. When Antonio received his magical gift, Dolores, along with the rest of the family, are very happy, although Dolores can be seen covering her ears in reaction to people clapping and fireworks going off. As the party moved into Antonio's magical bedroom, Dolores is quite impressed when her younger brother mounts his jaguar around in his room for the first time and looks at it with pride along with Camilo. Alma then went over to congratulate Antonio and took a family picture, which everyone unknowingly excluded Mirabel from.
Dolores mentions that Luisa's eye was twitching all night. The next morning at breakfast, Mirabel tries to ask "Dolores" if she knew what was going on with the magic after cracks appeared in the Casita the night before, only for "Dolores" to shift into Camilo much to Félix's annoyance and the real Dolores, who watched in silence as her father scolded her brother for shapeshifts into her to repeat food. Dolores, having overheard Mirabel's concerns, tells her that the only one worried about the magic was her, the rats in the wall and Luisa since her eye was twitching all night, to later join the rest of the family at the table. As The Madrigals started eating, Alma makes an announcement to the family that she spoke to the Guzmáns about Isabela's engagement, and when asked, Dolores tells everyone that Mariano is planning on proposing to Isabela that same night and briefly scares Isabela by adding that Mariano wants five babies before eating again. When breakfast concludes, Dolores joins everyone in the family chant "La Familia Madrigal" before returning to her daily activities.
Dolores sadly singing about not being able to be with the man of her dreams. Dolores then joined her family in "We Don't Talk About Bruno" after her parents' verses to telling Mirabel about their estranged, missing uncle Bruno. Having memories of her uncle before he left the Casa Madrigal, she does not refer to Bruno's predictions as misfortunes and instead in her verses Dolores describes him as someone whom others knew to understand. While in the halls of the house and tries to hide Bruno's presence from Mirabel, Dolores indirectly says that she can still hear Bruno and she associates him with the sound of falling sand and acknowledges that Bruno's gift is more of a burden, and that Bruno's prophecies left the family "fumbling" because they couldn't understand them, so that later it's Camilo's turn to tell his totally opposite version of Bruno. Watching from a distance as Alma leads the Guzmán family to the Casita for Isabela and Mariano's marriage proposal dinner, Dolores comments about the vision that Bruno gave her about the man of her dreams being out of her reach and states that she can hear Mariano approaching. After Camilo assists the family about the imminent arrival of the Guzmáns at the house, Dolores helped her family prepare the table for dinner.
Dolores discovers Mirabel and Agustín talking about Bruno's vision of the death of magic. Shortly before dinner, Dolores was leaving her room before hearing Mirabel's conversation with Agustín where she discussed Bruno's vision. Much to their dismay, Dolores acknowledges that she heard what they said before rushing off when Alma calls the family for dinner. At dinner, Mirabel stares Dolores down much to her discomfort, but as soon as they break eye contact, Dolores takes that opportunity to whisper to Camilo that Mirabel found Bruno's vision that foretold that the magic was disappearing, accidentally causing him to choke on his food. As the atmosphere became more awkward, the rest of the family found out Bruno's vision too and cracks started to appeared in the dining room. When dinner starts spiraling out of control with the spread of Bruno‘s vision about the miracle fading, a panicked Dolores blurts out to everyone present that Mirabel found Bruno's vision and she was going to destroy the magic and they were all doomed. She covered her ears in pain due to the noise caused by the cracks that appeared around the house and the cloud that her mother Pepa had caused, causing the wind from the clouds to open the doors of the house to reveal it to the townspeople the state of the house.
Dolores and Félix looking for Mirabel after she runs away. Later that same day, Dolores and the rest family returned to courtyard to find Alma and Mirabel arguing and to see their argument escalate to yelling and accusations that the other was the one hurting the miracle and the family. By the time the heated argument dies down, the ground beneath them starts cracking and the house starts falling apart as the candle starts fading fast. As Pepa and Félix scream in horror as they realize the Miracle Candle is in danger, while it's very quick and a bit blurred out, Dolores instinctively puts her arm around Camilo to try and protect him before he runs off to try to save the candle that was about to fall from a window. She watched helplessly as Mirabel, Camilo, and Isabela all tried to reach the candle despite the danger it represented. As the magic starts fading, and the house starts collapsing, the Casita forces everyone, except Mirabel out of the house. After the Casa Madrigal is destroyed and the candle dies along with the magic and gifts, Dolores can be seen taking care of a frightened Alma and sits her on a small piece of debris to calm her down as she sadly looks at the rubble of the house.
Dolores working on the rebuilding of the Casa Madrigal with Félix and Antonio. When her aunt, Julieta, noticed Mirabel went missing, the Madrigals and the other townspeople spread out to search for her. Dolores tries to use her enhanced hearing to find Mirabel, but having lost her gift after the magic faded, she can only hear what's immediately around her. By the next day, Dolores and the family saw that Mirabel and Alma (who reconcile with each other) returned to Casita's ruins to reunited with their family. During "All of You", as Alma apologizes to her family for holding on too tight, fearing she would lose them too after losing Pedro, and refines the miracle as simply themselves rather than the magic, Abuela also beckons Bruno hiding behind the rubble to rejoin the family. Unlike much of the family, Dolores was not surprised when she saw Bruno again after years, as she nudges Camilo's arm saying that she knew Bruno never left and she heard him everyday since his disappearance. With the family all together, Mirabel rallied them to fix the house and the entire town also pitched in as thanks for all the Madrigals had done for them, including Mariano and Señora Guzmán.
Dolores confessing her feelings to Mariano Guzmán after years of hiding them. At some point while rebuilding the Casa Madrigal, because it would be revealed that Isabela never loved Mariano and eventually cutting off the engagement, Dolores works up the confidence to confess her feelings to Mariano and interrupts Mirabel when she tries to speak for her. When Dolores begins to sing about the things she likes about him, Mariano seems puzzled at first, but then his eyes widen in surprise and he falls in love with her. The two become a couple and Mariano jokingly says they should get married, Dolores gently tells him to 'slow down', but she is clearly happy to be with him. Then Casita takes everyone inside and the family then celebrated the return of their home and gifts with a family picture. As they pose for the photo and everyone shouting "La Familia Madrigal", Casita unexpectedly crushed the entire family, creating an imperfect family image.

What is the superpower of Luisa Madrigal in Disney's Encanto? Who are the siblings of Luisa Madrigal in the film Encanto? How is Luisa Madrigal described in the context of her family in Encanto? Who voiced the character of Luisa Madrigal in Encanto? Background Born into the Madrigal family, Luisa is the middle daughter of Julieta and Agustín, younger sister of Isabela and older sister of Mirabel. In addition to being the niece of Félix, Pepa, and Bruno, Luisa is also the cousin of Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio. In the early years of her life, Luisa lived in the nursery with her sister Isabela and cousin Dolores who were two years older than her. When Isabela and Dolores received their gifts and moved into their own rooms, Luisa was left in the nursery by herself until the births of Camilo and Mirabel who were four years younger. On the night of Luisa's fifth birthday, Isabela made her a flower crown as a birthday present and at her gift ceremony she received the gift of superhuman strength. After Luisa received her gift, she spent the rest of the night doing tricks with it for the townspeople and subsequently moved out of the nursery and into her own room. Luisa is good-natured and tough, but deep down feels vulnerable since she has a lot of pressure from her Abuela Alma. Luisa takes care of all the family's chores and her community's chores with her super-strength and is relied upon a lot, but not a lot of people ask for how she feels about doing all the chores. She is outwardly tough and headstrong and appears to not care about the expectations set on her, and only shows her positive sides, such as her kind, brave, and obvious strong sides. However, Luisa also has anxiety about what will happen when she messes up and can no longer be relied on, which she hides from people around her. Official Description Luisa is considered the rock of the family. She is physically the strongest and carrying the heaviest weights, including the emotional ones. Luisa is also sensitive and secretly bursting with oversized emotions that conflict with her tough persona.[2]Luisa is one of Mirabel's older sisters. She is an astonishing athlete with the gift of super strength. She helps the town in any way that she can, even picking up and parking donkeys. At times when Luisa works to be responsible, her emotions are as mighty as her muscle.[3] Development Like the rest of the Madrigal family, Luisa was designed to reflect "family archetypes that are immediately relatable".[4] As in the final production, the studio created Luisa from the start as the brawny and dependable of her family with a soft feminine side to her, playing with the balance of a strong figure. She was originated from the beginning as the person that others turn to for all the heavy lifting and the one her entire family trusts, as she carries all the family burdens without complaining.[5] During the creation process, the animators struggled to animate Luisa's model with the correct muscle mass throughout the animation process as executives believed her muscular build made her less relatable to the target audience, taking inspiration from many real-life female Olympic athletes (mostly hammer and shot-put throwers) to create Luisa's look, expressions, and movements.[6] For her outfit, Luisa's skirt design was influenced by many Colombian dance outfits in which dancers can move and perform complicated dance moves without complications. Jessica Darrow, her voice actor, describes her character: "I love Luisa so much, too, because of how much we are alike. We are both tough crybabies, you know? We got the tough exterior, but soft, mushy, gushy center. And, you know, we're very much the rock of both of our families, I think. We definitely keep it all together… she's the emotional superhero of the film."[7] Personality
Luisa happily riding a unicorn in her fantasy. True to how Mirabel described her, Luisa is the strongest and most reliable member of the family. Hardworking and determined, having been gifted with super strength, both her family and the people of the town rely on her power. In turn, Luisa greatly appreciates that she can be of significant contribution to her community. She is one of the noblest members of the family as she happily enjoys helping others whenever she gets the chance, showing her generosity. Luisa is shown to be very tolerant doing anything anyone asks of her with no complaint despite people rarely ever showing her appreciation. In contrast to her imposing appearance, Luisa is relatively quiet and doesn't much enjoy being the center of attention. She has a taste for things that can be considered cute or childish, such as rainbows, unicorns, and pink clouds. In addition to that she collects stuffed animals in her room, which shows that she has a weakness for cute things.[8] Kind and helpful, Luisa gets along not only with much of her family but also with many of the townspeople, displaying a friendly attitude when they ask her for help or want her to do a job.
Luisa hugging Mirabel after telling her about her insecurities and pressures. She becomes quite affectionate with her family and adores them more than anything else. Luisa's sisters both had better relationships with her than initially with each other. Unlike some of the family members who shun Mirabel for not having a gift, Luisa seems to get along just fine with her, with neither sister showing animosity to the other. She also has a good relationship with Isabela, unlike Mirabel or Camilo, who have a bad opinion of Isabela as the golden child of the family. Luisa does not have any resentment towards Isabela as the favorite grandchild and even has some admiration for her older sister. During Antonio's gift ceremony, Luisa can be seen lovingly holding her hand on her mother Julieta's shoulder. Despite the harsh treatment Alma had recently given her and her sisters, as the house collapsed Luisa's first concern was her grandmother's well-being, catching her when the family was pushed out by the house. In addition, Luisa does not have any negative opinions of her uncle Bruno either, instead seeing him as a good man like Isabela and her cousin Dolores do, happily accepting him back.
Luisa in panic after losing her gift and not being able to do the family's chores. Despite being powerful and reliable, Luisa secretly feels burdened by the pressure of fulfilling everyone's demands, and would feel insignificant if she cannot contribute the way Abuela, her family, and the community expect her to. Luisa can become very dependent on her gift and without it she believes she is nothing. She also feels like she always needs to be tough and be ready for what she needs to carry or burden. She is willing to hide her feelings in order to follow the wishes of others, believing that it is her duty to do what others tell her, although she also expresses a desire to be able to relax and not have to bear the "crushing weight" of everyone's expectations. Although heavily stressed, Luisa keeps all of her struggles to herself, only telling Mirabel after the latter persistently questions her once she learned from Dolores that her eye twitched on the night that their family's miracle faltered. As Luisa begins losing her gift, she becomes easily distressed and pressured as she can't use her power the way she used to and fulfill her role in the family, berating herself and calling herself horrible things.
Luisa learning to relax and overcoming her insecurities. Not feeling useful without her super strength, she began to cry during this time around, sobbing uncontrollably after her power begins to fade, showing a more sensitive and pessimistic side to her. Luisa's depression was so great that at dinner with the Guzmáns, she could hardly speak or walk without beginning to sob and she ran away in anguish when her father chased her to help her. When Alma blames Mirabel for the family's problems, all Luisa and Isabela can do was shamefully look down, showing that Alma doesn't view them any different from the way she views Mirabel. As Mirabel defends Luisa and Isabela by pointing out that they will never be good enough for Alma even with their gifts, Luisa (along with Isabela) avoids looking at Alma, but looks incredibly hurt, indicating she knows that Mirabel is right that she can never be strong enough as Alma wishes. Once Alma apologizes to the family for pressuring them to be perfect, Luisa comes to understand that she is worth more than her gift and learns not to bottle her emotions, but rather express them healthily while taking time to enjoy herself and share happiness with her family. Physical appearance Luisa is a 19-year-old[9] young Colombian woman with a muscular build, who is significantly taller than everyone else in her family. She has tan skin, hazel eyes, and brown hair tied up in a bun by a red ribbon. Of all her sisters, Luisa is the one who most physically resembles her father, Agustín, since she inherits his skin color, physical features, and facial expressions. She wears a white, short and puffy sleeved top, and the bottom and neckline is hemmed by a red string with a red bow at the neckline, and a long indigo skirt with dark purple and pink stripes at the bottom over a pair of white pantalettes with lilac ribbons. Luisa also has felt bracelets: on the left, red and denim and on the right, red denim and yellow. She wears dark blue espadrilles with two dark blue ankle straps. To symbolize her super strength, Luisa's skirt has many free weights at the bottom, along with weights on her bracelets. Compared to the earrings of other women in the family, Luisa's are smaller to the point that they are hardly visible and are the same color as those of her mother, Julieta. Powers and abilities
Luisa lifting two large and heavy pianos with little effort. Luisa has the power of superhuman strength; allowing her to lift large and heavy things. Her strength is so great she is capable of moving sizable animals, such as donkeys, people, large objects, such as barrels, or even heavy things, such as buildings and bridges with ease. She can also lift an entire church, as well as kick a tilting house back into place. Though significantly weaker, Luisa's natural strength is still stronger than an average human. Unlike other members of her family who struggle in some degree to contain and control their power, there is no indication that Luisa cannot control her strength. She can easily give Mirabel a hug without hurting her or carry objects smaller than her without destroying them, showing she has good control of her super strength. Luisa's gift also grants her increased durability, as she is shown to throw a rock into the air and does not even flinch when it falls on her. However, she can still be injured, though it's unknown to what extent.[10] Having a power related to muscles and movements, she is also good at physical activities. Upon getting up in the morning, Luisa was shown running on a treadmill that the Casita made while carrying heavy weights in her hands. She was able to do this while keeping a consistent speed and not slowing down. While not directly mentioned, it is seen in "Surface Pressure" that she has a good knowledge of history and Greek mythology. Appearances Encanto
Luisa lifting a bridge while working in the village. Luisa's first appearance is in a flashback where Abuela Alma explains to a five-year-old Mirabel about how their family was blessed with magic and how the Miracle Candle will give each family member a magical gift on their fifth birthday. In the present, Luisa is seen exercising outside her magic door with Casita's help before preparing to start the day and heading to the village with the rest of her family to help around. During "The Family Madrigal", Luisa dancing along with the rest of her relatives and helping the townspeople in building houses. She also greets Mirabel and the Town Kids kindly as she works. Luisa does different jobs in the town, such as carrying around construction equipment and moving a bridge with her super strength, running to help other people when called. Since the day was also her youngest cousin's, Antonio, fifth birthday and gift ceremony, Luisa soon returned home to help prepare for the celebration. She begins to carry and reposition some heavy things on Alma's orders for Antonio's party.
Luisa holding up a plate of snacks while some children are happily on her back. By nightfall and before Antonio's ceremony was about to begin, Luisa along with her cousin Camilo were given the task of greeting the guests to the Casita, using her gift to regroup the guests' animals. Later, Luisa can be seen putting out snacks in preparation for Antonio's party while small children hang off of her back and arms, much to her confusion. She is joined by her parents and cousins as they all listen intently to Alma's speech before Antonio walks to her door. Luisa hugs Camilo and her mother Julieta when Mirabel walks Antonio to her door and after her cousin received his gift, she happily cheers along with her relatives as Antonio rides his jaguar into his new room. As the party moved into Antonio's magical bedroom, Luisa was in awe at the sight and Abuela gathered the family for a photo to celebrate Antonio's gift, which everyone unknowingly excluded Mirabel from. After Mirabel interrupted Antonio's party to warn everyone of the house being in danger, Mirabel led everyone out of the room to show them the cracks but there weren't any. While trying to brighten the mood, Luisa held the piano for her father Agustín as he played a song, and although she was smiling, she had a nervous look on her face.
Luisa's eye twitching from stress during breakfast. The next morning before breakfast, Dolores reveals that Luisa has been worried about magic because her eye was twitching all night, making Mirabel want to question her. After setting the table for breakfast, Luisa sits next to her mother Julieta and Mirabel tries to ask Luisa what she knows about the issues with the magic, causing Luisa's eye starts twitching. Mirabel pounds the table in excitement and starts yelling, which prompts Alma to have the house move Mirabel's seat from Luisa's side to her side. When the family announcements were over, Luisa left the table in a hurry to go into town. She moved the town's church, and was requested to reroute the river as well as put the donkeys back in the barn. While Luisa was picking up the donkeys, Mirabel follows her and starts asking her what she was hiding about the magic. Luisa says that she isn't hiding anything, and she just has a lot of chores to do so Mirabel should just go home. While Mirabel continues to insist on the subject, Luisa is visibly irritated but continues to insist that there is nothing to say. When her sister points out that Luisa is clearly worried about something, Luisa yells that it's okay, much to her surprise and the former of whom apologizes to Mirabel for her outburst.
Luisa expressing her pressures and insecurities in her role in the family. Luisa continues to insist that there isn't anything wrong and she isn't nervous, although she says this with a forced smile and with her eye twitching. To the confusion of Mirabel and the donkeys present, she begins throwing and destroying rocks at random before expressing her true feelings in "Surface Pressure". Luisa expresses her fears about not being able to handle her responsibilities through different disastrous scenarios which she has to save and protect Mirabel. She also talks about her daily anxiety about the exorbitant amount of pressure she's always under, and her desire to be able to not have to deal with the weight of everyone's expectations. When she was done, Mirabel gave her a hug and told her she thinks she carries too much, and Luisa hugs Mirabel back, squeezing her so hard that she cracks her joints. Luisa states that she thinks she overdoes it sometimes, and confides in Mirabel that when she saw the cracks the previous night, she felt her powers becoming weaker. When Luisa is reminded of the donkeys, she puts Mirabel down and starts to recollect the donkeys.
Luisa, in distress, proclaiming that she has lost her gift. When Mirabel asks Luisa to expand on what she's talking about, and again asks her what she thinks is hurting the magic, Luisa says she doesn't know. However, she did tell Mirabel that at some point she heard the elders in their family talking about Bruno, and he had a "horrible vision" about the magic before he left. Luisa then tells Mirabel that if she wants to know what's going on with the magic, she needs to go into their uncle's tower and find his vision. Luisa urges her sister to be careful, telling her that Bruno's room is off-limits for a reason. Shortly after this, after Mirabel had run into Alma after having collected Bruno's vision from his room, Luisa came running into the house and hysterically explained to Alma that she was losing her gift. She states that her and Mirabel had a talk about how Luisa shouldn't carry so much, and so she tried not to but then she realized she was going to let everyone down, and when she picked up the donkeys and threw them back into the barn the donkeys were actually heavy. Luisa then started crying and ran into her room. As the Madrigal family prepares for dinner with the Guzmáns during "We Don't Talk About Bruno", Luisa is seen struggling to lift a plant pot and is seen sobbing from not being able to do it properly.
Luisa crying at Mariano and Isabela's proposal dinner. During dinner, Señora Guzmán says that Mariano wanted to sing a song and requests that Luisa bring over the piano. Luisa agrees but she gets up from the table crying. When she comes back into the dining room, Luisa struggles to drag the piano across the floor and she cries about her inability to be able to lift the piano. As dinner starts spiraling out of control with the spread of Bruno's vision about the magic fading, Luisa runs out of the dining room, crying while calling herself a loser as Agustin tries to console her. Later that day, after Alma enters the house angry at the chaos caused by Isabela's power in the town, Luisa stands next to her older sister while Alma blames Mirabel for all the family's troubles because she wasn't given a gift. Luisa with Isabela, who were equally hurt by how little Alma thinks of them, shamefully looks down. As their parents stand by their side, Isabela and Luisa avoids looking at Alma when Mirabel defends them by saying that they will never be good enough for Alma, even with their gifts and points out that Luisa won't be strong enough for her. Luisa and the rest of the family see how Alma and Mirabel's argument escalate to yelling and accusations that the other was the one hurting the magic and the family.
Luisa is moved when Mirabel tells her that she is worth more than her magical gift. By the time the heated argument dies down, the ground beneath them starts cracking and the house starts falling apart as the candle starts fading fast. While all this is happening, Luisa stands still in shock unable to move due to fear and loss of her gift. She watched helplessly as Mirabel, Camilo, and Isabela all tried to reach the candle despite the danger it represented. As the magic starts fading, and the house starts collapsing, Mirabel tries to save the candle while the Casita forces everyone back and Luisa catches Alma as they are all thrown out of the house except Mirabel. After Casita collapsed completely and the candle dies along with the magic, Julieta noticed Mirabel went missing so the Madrigals and the other townspeople spread out to search for her. By the next day, Luisa and the family saw that Mirabel and Alma (who reconcile with each other) returned to Casita's ruins to reunited with their family. During "All of You", as Alma apologizes to her family for holding on too tight, fearing she would lose them too after losing Pedro, and refines the miracle as simply themselves rather than the magic, Abuela also beckons Bruno hiding behind the rubble to rejoin the family. Although Luisa is briefly confused by the sudden return of her uncle, she along with the rest of the family have accepted him back into the family.
Luisa happy to regain her Super Strength by moving a plant pot. With the family all together, Mirabel rallied them to fix the house. When Luisa tries to lift some rubble from the house, Mirabel tells her that she's more than just her gift which makes Luisa emotional. Moment after the entire town also pitched in as thanks for all the Madrigals had done for them. When Isabela says it's a dream when they work together, and compliments Luisa's strength, Luisa admits that she cries sometimes, and Isabela and Mirabel give her a comforting hug while saying they cry too. Luisa acknowledges that she isn't as strong as she used to be, but she's getting smarter, and she helps her sisters plant new cacti. After completing the house, Mirabel added a doorknob the family made just for her to the front door, which caused Casita to spring back to life, and the magic returned to the entire Encanto. Luisa moves a plant pot that she struggled to move earlier, and is happy that her strength is back. The donkeys then lift her up and throw her into a hammock and give her a drink which she enjoys even with the hailstorm coming from her aunt Pepa. The Madrigals then celebrated the return of their home and gifts with a family picture while Casita squished the whole family closer together unexpectedly.

Born into the Madrigal family, Camilo is the middle child of Pepa and Félix, younger brother of Dolores, and older brother of Antonio. In addition to being the nephew of Julieta, Bruno, and Agustín, Camilo is also the cousin of Isabela, Luisa and Mirabel. He is Mirabel's second-oldest cousin and the same age as her, being only a few months older,[2] and shared the nursery together for their first five years.[3][4] On the night of Camilo's fifth birthday, he received the gift of Shapeshifting and he subsequently moved out of the nursery and into his own room. After receiving his magical gift, due to his good skill with the village kids and babies, Camilo became the Encanto's babysitter, helping mothers take care of their children.[5] When he is not working in town, Camilo sometimes also likes to use his shapeshifting gift to mock his relatives (mainly his father and Isabela). Due to his gift being not very useful to the community, Camilo seems to be one of the members of the family with the fewest responsibilities imposed on him by Abuela Alma. Despite this, he also suffers from pressure and has insecurities like any of his relatives. Camilo hides his fears under his cheerful demeanor and is described as someone who "doesn't quite know who he is yet", hinting that he has self-identity issues. Unlike his sister or older cousins, he has no memory of Bruno since his uncle was very secretive in the last years he was still in the family and disappeared when Camilo was only five years old. Camilo grew up knowing nothing about Bruno and only listening some rumors from his relatives and the townspeople, he was able to establish an idea of what his long-lost uncle was like. When Bruno returns to the family after the fall of the Casa Madrigal, it is revealed that Camilo is the only one of his siblings who had no idea that Bruno never actually left and still lived within the walls of Casita, so he was initially confused by his presence. Official Description Camilo is a teen who was born to entertain. Throw in his magical gift that allows him to switch up his appearance to be whomever he wants to be in the moment, and he's secured his place in the spotlight.[6]Camilo, Pepa, and Félix's middle child, is a shape-shifter. He usually changes his appearance to help people in the Encanto. But his gift becomes really useful when he wants an extra serving for breakfast. He loves to tell tall tales and is never afraid of speaking his mind.[7] Development
Camilo's Costume Design by Griselda Sastrawinata. How with the rest of the Madrigal family, Camilo was designed to reflect "family archetypes that are immediately relatable".[8] As in the final production, Camilo's shape-shifting power came about because the studio was interested in a teen who doesn't quite know who they are yet and are trying on a lot of different personas, inspired by teenagers still finding out who they are and continue to grow in life.[9][10] One of the first concepts of his gift was the ability to not only shapeshift into people, but also to be able to turn into animals.[11] To create his appearance, the studio initially thought of letting Camilo's hair cover one of his eyes in order to convey a negative attitude, before changing it to something more upbeat and "messy". One thing that didn't change was that his clothing had to reflect his theatrical personality. His ruana was originally going to have more reddish colors and he was going to wear dark yellow shoes.[12] During the creation process, Camilo was originally imagined as an "angry teen" with an antagonistic role. He would have a sarcastic and arrogant attitude, using his power to cause chaos in the house. Camilo would also be rude to Mirabel and would even go so far as to briefly make fun of Abuela Alma, the family matriarch.[13] However, since Isabela is needed to be the most antagonistic of the grandchildren and Camilo's attitude would have made the family seem bad, this concept of the character was removed.[14] As shown in the final production, his personality was changed so that he was easy-going and amicable, with his pranks being to entertain rather than tease others. The only thing that didn't change from his initial personality was his joy in telling scary stories about Bruno. Camilo's transformation into his uncle was originally going to be more terrifying, having pointy teeth and having a psychotic expression on his face, plus he was going to be the size of a room.[15] Voice The actor and voice actor of Dominican descent, Rhenzy Feliz, was chosen to voice the character of Camilo. Before arriving to audition to participate in Encanto, Feliz had came to work in the 2017-2019 Marvel Comics. live-action television adaptation of Runaways, where Feliz played the character of Alex Wilder. However, since the actor was not well known for his musical talent, Feliz was very nervous when he had to record his verses in the song "We Don't Talk About Bruno". The actor listened to Lin-Manuel Miranda's demo of the song for a week straight in preparation for his recording session and practicing hard before shooting it.[16] On the day of the song's recording, the voice actor was a bit hard on himself, given that it was his first time singing in a studio and he feared he'd be recast. Months after the film's premiere on Disney+, Rhenzy Feliz along with the rest of the cast were surprised by the sheer popularity of "We Don't Talk About Bruno" and described his experience recording his verses for the song, saying: "So nervous going in to do my verse! First time ever in a studio trying to sing, never taken any lessons, just not really where I feel most comfortable. Left thinking I had totally screwed it up and if they were considering recasting."[17] Rhenzy Feliz described his character: "Someone who's a little crazy, a little dramatic, and someone who's a lot of fun, and a lot of energy, you're born an entertainer. So that's kind of Camilo. He's, like, this entertainer. He sort of wants to make everyone laugh, have a good time. And I sort of feel like that. I mean, I'm an actor, so when you sort of try and get that spotlight, it feels nice, it feels good. So he's kind of like that. And so he's out there, trying to get that attention. He has a good time and he's a lot of fun, but he loves his family."[18] Personality
Camilo happily repeating himself a large plate of food made by his aunt, Julieta. Described as a "theater kid"[19][20] and natural entertainer, Camilo is a fun-loving, easy-going, and energetic teenager. Unlike his quiet older sister and his timid younger brother, Camilo is more extroverted than them and the one that takes after their spirited parents the most. Social and charismatic, he is on good terms with many of the townsfolk, displaying a charming attitude when he interacts with them and having several friends his age in town.[21] While not boastful or vain, Camilo enjoys the spotlight and has a good sense of humor with a penchant for dramatic movements, such as twirls or exaggerating stories based on rumors (his tales about Bruno) for flair.[22][23] Camilo likes to use his gift to entertain and prank people, constantly trying to impress everyone.[24] He is noted to enjoy eating, particularly food by his aunt Julieta, and is seen trying to sneak seconds by pretending to be Dolores and serving herself much larger plates than any adult in the family. In the books and novels of the film it is revealed that when he is not using his gift to spend playing pranks or helping out in village, Camilo loves sports like football and enjoys playing mostly with the company of Casa Madrigal or friends from village.
Camilo enjoying dramatizing and shapeshifts into Bruno. Young and still discovering himself, Camilo enjoys using his shapeshifting ability to try different personas and playing pranks or playfully teasing his relatives. Of all the family members, his cousin Isabela is notably the person he enjoys teasing the most, acting like an annoying younger sibling towards her. He consecutively mocks Isabela for her engagement to Mariano and every time the man is mentioned, Camilo shapeshifts into him to annoy her, much to her frustration. Another person that Camilo likes to tease and mock is his father Félix, as seen before Antonio's ceremony when he transformed into him and repeated his father's words in an amusing manner. Also to some extent, he may enjoy dramatizing about his uncle Bruno as a creepy and evil monster, though it's possible they are not out of any truly malicious feeling towards him. While mischievous and a bit impertinent, Camilo's antics are harmless and are simply playful in nature, often taking to being caught or scolded by his father in good stride, such as responding with a good-natured "worth a shot". When Isabela flicks flowers into his open mouth for his teasing, he merely spits them out with a sheepish look on his face, showing no annoyance when caught when he does mischief.
Camilo offering assistance to an overwhelmed mother. Despite his wisecracking and impish demeanor, Camilo has a very tender, sweet, and responsible side, especially towards his family. Much like Mirabel, Camilo is good with children and infants, frequently using his gift to play with them and care for them as part of his service to the village, and also a caring brother to Antonio, as he tries to help him relax during his ceremony by jokingly impersonating their father. In a family photo, he has his arm lovingly around him and then, when the family loses their powers, Camilo pushed past his own pain of losing his gift to worry over how Antonio was feeling. Unlike how he constantly teases his father, Camilo is very sweet to his mother Pepa and it is clear that he is very close to her, to the point of being nicknamed "Mamá's Boy".[25] While dealing with his emotional mother, he treats her in a soothing manner when trying to get her to calm down and puts up with being accidentally jolted by her without complaining. When Mirabel tries to go after the Miracle Candle in the crumbling Casita, Camilo (along with Isabela) runs after her to help her get it and save the miracle because all his life Abuela Alma has told them that it is the most important object in the Encanto, demonstrating his protective drive to help his family.[26][27][28]
Camilo showing a more expressionless and sarcastic side after the fall of the house. While not addressed or shown in the film, Camilo does suffer from pressure and has insecurities like much of his family, though he hides it under his cheerful demeanor. Although he enjoys his gift, it makes him questions his sense of self, and constantly shapeshifting for others does tire him out.[29][30] When the secret about Bruno's vision and the impending destruction of the Casita is revealed, Camilo is visibly stressed and was clutching his entire head in fear. His rare moments of stress can affect his gift, such as him involuntarily changing into a baby's head. Although he likes to exaggerate his expressions when he transforms into other people, Camilo himself displays a dry wit. After being sad about losing the Casa Madrigal, Camilo snarkily emphasizes that the family is left homeless and protested not being allowed to speak the truth as he points to the rubble of the house with an incredibly neutral expression. In the novelization, Camilo's personality is notably more rude, sassy, sarcastic, and arrogant than in the film. At Mariano and Isabela's failed proposal dinner, Camilo happily tells his father about Bruno's vision and Mirabel hears him wondering if she's going to make him lose his gift, when in the film Camilo was nervous because the magic was in danger. After the Casita collapses, Camilo makes an unflattering and cruel comment about Mirabel when they are in the ruins of the house, whereas in the film he was busy worrying about Antonio. Physical appearance Camilo is a 15-year-old[31] Colombian boy with a slender build, light golden-brown complexion, curly, dark auburn hair, hazel green eyes, and freckles across his nose and cheeks, along with dark tint on his eyelids. Of all the grandchildren, Camilo is the one who most resembles his Abuelo Pedro. Although they have various differences in skin color, facial structures and hair, Camilo's features and facial expressions are very similar to Pedro's, in addition to inheriting a large part of his way of dressing. Like his late grandfather, Camilo wears a white long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his collar opened with the buttons mismatched, and the rest is left largely unbuttoned and loose, except for the right side tuck into his pants. He also wears a yellow ruana with darker yellow streaks, black pants and black flip flops with white etchings. Symbolizing his shapeshifting ability, Camilo's clothes have a chameleon motif, with chameleons on his shirt collar, ruana, and sandals. Powers and abilities
Camilo shapeshifting into his cousin Luisa. Shapeshifting: Camilo has the power of shapeshifting, he can assume the form of any living person he has seen. When shape-shifting, his clothes shape-shift with him to match those of the person whose shape he is assuming. Camilo's control of his gift is quite refined, as he is able to shape-shift only certain parts of his body if he wishes so, alter the size of his forms, and can take on more exaggerated features. Stress, shock, and pain will cause him to involuntarily and wildly shape-shift. When frightened by Bruno's vision, Camilo quickly transforms into Mirabel and Bruno, which soon followed by his mouth becomes lopsided and his eyes end up bulging and looking away from each other. When he is afraid or nervous, his head will turn into an infant's atop of his adolescent body and his arms turn small and skinny. Camilo's power is not capable of hiding wounds. If he were to injure himself while he has shapeshifted into a different person, then shifts back to himself, the injury would still be there.[32] His power does have certain limits, such being only able to shape-shift to people and cannot shift into animals or objects.[33][34] Camilo also cannot mimic traits beyond a physical level and turning into his magical family members does not give him their gifts. An example would be when Camilo shape-shifted into Bruno, he was able to copy Bruno's glowing green eyes (which only happens when the real Bruno looks into the future). However, he cannot copy his uncle's ability to see into the future. Similarly, if he were to turn into Luisa, Camilo would only have her natural strength (which is somewhat higher than a normal human's) rather than her superhuman strength.[35][36][37] • Other skills: Camilo also has good agility and speed, demonstrated when he used his gift to become children and adults to slide, jump, and run through the falling pieces of the house. While his voice can also change to match the person his shape-shift into, Camilo can naturally do vocal impressions well after a lot of practicing.[38] Unlike most of his family has caters to one specific job, Camilo does various odd jobs due to a being a "Jack of all trades" person that can do anything.[39] Appearances Encanto
Camilo in town while having fun with his gift. Camilo's first appearance is in a flashback where Abuela Alma explains to a five-year-old Mirabel about how their family was blessed with magic and how the Miracle Candle will give each family member a magical gift on their fifth birthday. In the present, Camilo is getting ready to start the day and heading to the village with the rest of his family to help around. While The Madrigals are in town, Camilo was seen dancing along with the rest of his family and offering a young mother a pillow so she can catch some sleep while he cares for her infant child. During "The Family Madrigal", Mirabel describes him to the Town Kids as someone who likes to make others smile and at some point Camilo is also seen playing ball while using his shapeshifting power on different townspeople. Since the day was also his younger brother's, Antonio, fifth birthday and gift ceremony, Camilo soon returned home to help prepare for the celebration.
Camilo and his cousin Luisa greeting guests at the entrance of Casa Madrigal. While preparing Antonio's gift ceremony, Alma saw Camilo leaning lazily against a bannister and instructed him to help a townsperson named José with a banner over Antonio's door, to which Camilo obediently turns into José to help. By nightfall and before Antonio's ceremony was about to begin, Camilo along with his cousin Luisa were given the task of greeting the guests to the Casa Madrigal. He used his gift to imitate the appearance of the guests while greeting each of them kindly, such as hugging Osvaldo or high-fiving Cecilia, before heading inside. Later Camilo joined his family to greet Antonio and give him some encouragement to relax. Camilo playfully turned a miniature version of his father Félix and mocked his way speaking, which brought a smile to his younger brother's face. When Dolores informed them that Antonio's gift ceremony would begin shortly, the family departed to wait in their designated places, Félix ushered everyone out and Camilo once again imitated him, causing Félix to grab him by the shoulders and haul him out, with Camilo quickly stating that he was done imitating him.
Camilo cheering Antonio on before his gift ceremony. After being yanked out, Camilo joined his other relatives to listen intently to Abuela Alma's speech about the candle that blessed their family, while his aunt Julieta hugged him affectionately. When Mirabel goes to help Antonio to his door when asked by him, the guests and family worry that the ceremony will fail and Antonio will not receive his magical gift, with Luisa placing her hand on Camilo's shoulder reassuringly as they watch Antonio walk to his new door. He loudly cheered when his brother got his gift and snapped his fingers in excitement when Antonio rode his jaguar into his new room. As the party moved into Antonio's magical bedroom, Camilo and Dolores looked happily at their younger brother and Abuela gathered the family for a photo to celebrate Antonio's gift, which everyone unknowingly excluded Mirabel from. While enjoying the food during the party and talking with Julieta and Señora Pezmuerto, Camilo and everyone else heard from a panicked Mirabel that there were cracks in the Casa Madrigal. When everyone came to investigate, the cracks weren't there and Alma ushered everyone back to the party.
Camilo shapeshifts into Mariano to prank his cousin Isabela during breakfast. The next morning, Camilo turned into his sister Dolores to steal a second serving of breakfast and was confronted by Mirabel, who was trying to get information about the fading magic from Dolores. Camilo stood silent as his cousin rambled on until his father appeared along with the real Dolores. Félix scolded to Camilo for turning into his sister to get more food and Camilo reverted back into his own form saying it was worth a try, and just seconds after speaking was whacked by Casita's nearby window panel for his trick, which he took in good stride. During breakfast, he sat next to Isabela and his uncle Agustín, who is left surprised to see Camilo's large plate of food. As the family started eating, Camilo is seen watching how Abuela Alma affectionately treats Isabela and he listed with a mischievous smile to Dolores' announcement regarding Mariano's proposal to Isabela that would take place that night. Sitting next to Isabela, after Alma finished speaking, Camilo shapeshifts into Mariano and made kissy faces to tease her, which she responded by flicking flowers into his mouth. When breakfast concludes, Camilo joins everyone in the family chant "La Familia Madrigal" before returning to her daily activities.
Camilo singing his version of Bruno as a scary and evil monster with rats on his back. Later, Camilo joined his family in "We Don't Talk About Bruno" after Dolores' verse to telling Mirabel about their estranged, missing uncle Bruno. Having no real memories of his uncle, due to him leaving when he was five and Bruno being reserved when he was still in the family, Camilo choose to dramatize his uncle as a boogeyman-like figure for fun. In his verses he describes his uncle in a negative way similar to his parents by shapeshifting into a version of Bruno with shining green eyes, with an evil grin and surrounded by rats, moving in sinister ways. While trying to scare Mirabel, he also tells her that Bruno enjoys the darkness, the suffering of others and is feasts with the screams, so that later it is the turn of the townspeople to tell of the misfortunes that Bruno has brought with his gift. As Abuela and the Guzmans are approaching the house, Camilo takes the opportunity to taunt Isabela and hilariously yells to his cousin about her fiancé's arrival at the house before again morphing and flexing as Mariano. After assisting his family about the arrival of the Guzmáns, Camilo helped his family prepare the table while he happily repeated his verses about Bruno and dancing with his father and Agustin.
Camilo tells his father Félix about Bruno's vision. After everything was ready for Mariano and Isabela's imminent marriage proposal, Camilo sat down next to Dolores and Félix. During dinner, Dolores leaned in to whisper to him that Mirabel was in Bruno's vision that foretold that the magic was disappearing. Shocked by this news, Camilo choke on his food and rapidly shifted into Bruno and Mirabel before returning into his own form with bungled face. After straightening his features, Camilo whispered to his father Mirabel's secret, making Félix spit out his drink on Mariano and Señora Guzmán, which Camilo replies with a bashful smile. As the atmosphere became more awkward, the rest of the family found out Bruno's vision too and cracks started to appeared in the dining room. As everyone panicked and Pepa started forming a thundercloud, Camilo dunk his head down from ensuing chaos until his powers started to fritz and turned his head into an infant's due to fear. When he returned to normal, Camilo watched uncomfortably as the doors of the house were thrown open due to the storm clouds and the townspeople watched as the proposal dinner had been ruined.
Camilo trying to calm his stressed mother Pepa after the failed proposal dinner. After the Guzmán family left and Isabela's proposal dinner failed, Camilo regained his composure and focus on trying to calm his anxious mother in her room, as she is nervous that magic and the house were in danger. While he gently attempted to serve Pepa tea and attempting to lovingly guide her through calming breathing techniques, Mirabel (who was running between the walls of the house at the time chasing Bruno) startled Pepa into accidentally zapping Camilo with lightning, which lead into a series of injuries for the teenager as he widely transformed into his family members, much to Pepa's dismay. In the morning, on Abuela Alma's orders after the adults in the family discussed the danger that Bruno's vision represented, Camilo went looking for Mirabel since she been missing since last night. While looked around the courtyard, Camilo's gift acted up again and he involuntary turned his head into a baby's, much to his annoyance. Unknown to Camilo, Mirabel and Bruno witnessed this event from the second floor, which they took as sign the magic was dangerously close to disappearing forever.
Camilo is saved by Casa Madrigal while trying to get to the Miracle Candle. Later that same day, Camilo and the rest family returned to courtyard to find Alma and Mirabel arguing and to see their argument escalate to yelling and accusations that the other was the one hurting the magic and the family. By the time the heated argument dies down, the ground beneath them starts cracking and the house starts falling apart as the candle starts fading fast. While it's very quick and a bit blurred out, Dolores instinctively puts her arm around Camilo to try and protect him as their parents look on and scream in horror as they realize the Miracle Candle is in danger. Because the candle that kept the miracle alive in all of Encanto was about to fall out of the window, despite Dolores trying to protecting him, Camilo joined Mirabel and Isabela in trying to retrieve the candle. As he weaved through the fallen debris with his gift, Camilo jumped up off a railing to reach a high ledge in a form of a tall person, but his gift faded before he could reach it. Casa Madrigal helped him break his fall by sticking out a railing for him to catch and land more safely on the ground. When he landed, Camilo looked in dismay at his hand and both he and Isabela, who also had to be saved by the house, realized that they had lost their gifts.
Camilo sadly looking at the rubble of the Casa Madrigal. The house then quickly pushed Camilo and the family out, except Mirabel, before it fully crumbled down, though she was able to reach the candle, but as the crumbling ended, the candle's long-lit flame dies in her hands. After the house completely collapses, devastated by the lost of his home and his gift, Camilo sadly surveyed the ruins with the rest of his family and expressed concern over Antonio's well-being, while Felix checked on him to make sure he is not hurt. When Julieta noticed Mirabel went missing, the Madrigals and the other townspeople spread out to search for her. By the next day, Camilo and the family saw that Mirabel and Alma (who reconcile with each other) returned to Casita's ruins to reunited with their family, with a cynical Camilo interrupting the reunion to remind the optimistic Agustín that the Madrigals were still homeless, much to his father's annoyance. During "All of You", as Alma apologizes to her family for holding on too tight, fearing she would lose them too after losing Pedro, and refines the miracle as simply themselves rather than the magic, she also beckons Bruno hiding behind the rubble to rejoin the family.
Camilo is the only one completely confused by the presence of his uncle Bruno. While all the adults were absolutely overjoyed by Bruno's return, Camilo was the only person present confused by his presence, especially when both his siblings reveal that they had known their uncle never actually left, with Antonio smiling at his uncle's return to the considering him a friend and Dolores proudly admits that she knew Bruno never left and nudges Camilo hard in the arm. With family all together, everyone came together to fix the house and the entire town also pitched in as thanks for all the Madrigals had done for them over the decades. While they were working on repairing the Casa Madrigal, Mirabel handed Camilo a shovel which he tries to spin to look cool but accidentally drops it, causing Camilo to look around to make sure no one saw that. Then Casita takes everyone inside and the family then celebrated the returned of their home and gifts with a family picture. Camilo stood next to Bruno and Félix as they posed for the photo and when everyone smiled shouting "La Familia Madrigal", Casita unexpectedly crushed the entire family, creating an imperfect family image.

She is the youngest daughter of Julieta and Agustín Madrigal, and youngest sister of Isabela and Luisa, who has the distinction of being the only Madrigal by birth without a magical gift. However, when the miracle begins to fade, Mirabel takes it upon herself to save the magic, learning about hidden familial troubles along the way. Quick Answers
What is the significance of Mirabel being the only Madrigal without a magical gift? How does Mirabel's character contribute to the plot of Encanto? Is Mirabel considered a Disney princess? What are some defining characteristics of Mirabel in Encanto? Background Born into the Madrigal family, Mirabel is the youngest daughter of Julieta and Agustín, and the younger sister of Isabela and Luisa. In addition to being the niece of Félix, Pepa, and Bruno, Mirabel is also the cousin of Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio. Mirabel shared the nursery with her cousin, Camilo, who is three months older than her, until he received his gift on his fifth birthday and subsequently moved out of the nursery. On the night of five-year-old Mirabel's gift ceremony, she touched the door handle of her soon-to-be room, excited about what kind of gift she would get. But her door suddenly faded away, and she didn't get a gift like the rest of her family. This left everyone who attended the ceremony shocked, especially Abuela Alma. Ever since that day, Mirabel has been desperately trying to make up for not having a gift by helping out in an attempt to "make her family proud". Alma and Isabela over the years distanced themselves from Mirabel because she did not have a magical gift and the pressures they carried respectively. Being the only child not blessed with a gift, she is constantly left out by most of her family. Despite this, she genuinely loves her family. Official Description Mirabel is a young girl imperfect and weird and quirky, but also deeply emotional and incredibly empathetic.[1]Mirabel is a young girl who may be imperfect and "weird", but is also empathetic and emotional. She's determined to prove that she belongs, denying to everyone, including herself, that she feels all alone even in her own house.[2] Development How with the rest of the Madrigal family, Mirabel was designed to reflect "family archetypes that are immediately relatable".[3] As in the final production, the studio created Mirabel without a magical gift but at the same time empathetic and someone who is always there to help her family. Since the beginning, the idea was for Mirabel to have embroidery in her costume. Despite some of its imperfections, the designs on their clothing were meant to resemble something that would look similar in a teenager's art book or drawings in a diary.[4] Mirabel's voice actress, Stephanie Beatriz, described her character: "Mirabel doesn't have a gift, which I find extremely relatable, because there have been many times in my life where I felt like I didn't belong, I didn't measure up, I wasn't talented enough to be there, I had that sort of imposter syndrome. But I also discovered by getting older, and working more and more on trusting myself, that I do have something to offer, and it is special, and I am myself. So, you know, not everybody's gonna love that but the people that do, are gonna love it really hard."[5] Personality
Mirabel taking care of her youngest cousin, Antonio. Mirabel often shows a free-spirited and optimistic demeanor; despite being the only Madrigal grandchild without a gift and an outcast by her family, she is still very much sociable and friendly to those around her. Lacking a gift of her own, she admires her relatives and hold them in high regard. Her lack of gift also does not hinder her from getting along with most of her relatives: having a very close bond with her cousin Antonio, comforting him when he needs it. At the same time, he admires her and sees her more as a sister than his cousin. She also is humble and honest, admitting easily that she and her father are both accident-prone. On top of this, Mirabel appears confident as she claims that she does not need a gift to make herself happy and that she is just as special as everyone else in her family.
Mirabel expressing her desire to be equal to her family. Despite seemingly living life happily without any power of her own, Mirabel is very much insecure over the fact that she cannot contribute the same way her relatives do. The worst part of not having a gift is being looked down by Abuela Alma and viewed as a nobody in her own family. As she cannot relate with her gifted relatives, she is lonely and feels disconnected from them. Ultimately, her greatest wish is nothing more than to be fully included in the family, even if she doesn't have a gift. In her pursuit to find answers behind the magic's weakening, she is shown to be very persistent as she continually followed Luisa while she was running her errands and pestered her until her sister confesses her problems. She also insisted that Bruno conjure another vision of the future, despite him being uncomfortable with the idea of it. Later on, Mirabel persisted on reconciling with Isabela by embracing her, and while Isabela is singing about her self-expression and freedom, Mirabel attempts to rush the reconciliation process, but stopped and she eventually helps her sister embrace her true self and they both shared a genuine hug.
Mirabel hugging Luisa after she revealed her pressures. While searching for answers on why the magic is dying, Mirabel discovers how much stress each of her family members are under as a result of the expectations set upon their gifts and themselves, which they hide behind effortless façades. She helps to give voice to her family's problems through her compassion and helps them understand that they are valuable as they are, not because of their gifts. This allows Mirabel to relate to her family members in ways she could not previously do, thus allowing her to form stronger bonds with them. Mirabel was visibly worried after Luisa reveals her insecurities and the pressure that she was under to meet their family's expectations of her, hugging Luisa to comfort her and telling her that she thinks she carries "way too much". She shows her concern several times for her sister when Luisa is in a state of depression over losing her gift. When the family comes together to rebuild the Casa Madrigal, Mirabel reassures her family that they are more than just their gift. She also showed compassion to her uncle Bruno upon learning his sad upbringing and assured him his visions don't make him a bad man.
Mirabel, fed up with Alma's treatment of her and the family, confronts her. While Mirabel greatly respects Abuela as both the founder of the magic and the matriarch of the Madrigal family, she is unhappy with the fact that Abuela mistreats her for not being blessed with a gift and frequently disallowing her from participating in familial activities. After learning the source of the miracle dying and trying to tell Abuela how to fix it, Abuela was quick to lash out at Mirabel for "hurting the family" because she didn't get a gift, which greatly hurts Mirabel. Finally fed up with this treatment, Mirabel stands up to Alma and defends her family by saying that she had always seen her as a disappointment and that no one would ever be good enough for her or her expectations, even with their magical gifts and how Bruno really left because she always saw the worst in him, accusing her grandmother of not caring about them. After the destruction of Casita, Mirabel and Abuela have a heart-to-heart conversation away from the family. Though Abuela admits that she had lost sight of what was truly important in her life: her family, and not the gifts they possess; Mirabel, after learning of Abuela's trauma, maturely understood her actions better. Mirabel saw how broken her grandmother was, and forgave Abuela while lifting her spirits by reminding her how she was strong in leading their community and raising her children despite the tragedy she endured. The two then reconciled and mended their relationship. Now, Mirabel is genuinely more confident in her worth, finally seen as an equal in her family and community. Physical appearance Mirabel is a 15-year-old Colombian girl of a 5'2" height,[6] with hazel eyes, chin-length voluminous curly black hair with midnight brown reflections, brownish-black thick eyebrows, and a visibly dark shade of freckles on her nose and cheeks. Of her sisters, Mirabel is the one who most resembles her mother Julieta. Mirabel is near-sighted[7], so she wears lime green and gold round-framed glasses. She wears blue pom-pom earrings, and carries around a mochila bag when going out. Her attire is a traditional Andean-styled white blouse that has colorful butterfly stitching, with frills of black trimming at the neck and sleeves. She wears a long Colombian skirt that's 3 shades of teal with colorful butterfly embroidery and her name stitched on the waistband, with an indigo petticoat and white bloomers, and hot pink espadrilles with stitched linking and black ribbons around her ankles. Mirabel's skirt has many embroidered patterns, like butterflies, flowers, a little version of herself and even some motifs representing her relatives, like a candle (Alma), a basket of buñuelos (Julieta), a chameleon (Camilo), musical notes (Dolores), and others. At night, she wears a white ankle-length nightgown with a green ribbon at the neckline. As a 5-year-old child, Mirabel still had her signature green glasses and looked very similar to her teenage self, with the same hairstyle and small face. On the night of her gift ceremony, Mirabel wore a white party dress that had golden butterflies embroidered on it and lace ruffles at the sleeves, and a light pink bow pin placed near the top and slightly to the left side of her head. She also wore white and gold flats that matched her dress. Powers and Abilities Although Mirabel doesn't possess any particular gift, she does have a strong affinity with the Casa Madrigal like Abuela Alma; she communicates with the Casita like it is a real person, and the house responds to her prompts and helps with her daily routine. Mirabel is skilled in sewing, having embroidered her own clothes and made a stuffed jaguar for her cousin, Antonio. She is also nimble and quick on her feet, displaying skills similar to parkour to navigate through difficult areas like the roof and walls behind the house. After the Casa Madrigal is rebuilt, Mirabel added a doorknob the family made for her to the front door, which restored the magic to the Encanto. This new miracle is born from Mirabel's love for her family and to reflect this, the color of the magic is different from what it was previously, going from gold to the color of the rainbow. Appearances Encanto
Mirabel introducing her family members to the Town Kids. Mirabel first appears as a five-year-old girl listening to her grandmother, Alma tell the story of how their family was blessed with magic and how the Miracle Candle will grant her a magical gift during her birthday. When it is time for her ceremony, Mirabel asks Abuela what she thinks her gift will be, to which her grandmother responds that she is a wonder and whatever gift she gets will be just as special as her. In the present, Mirabel is seen helping prepare for her cousin Antonio's gift ceremony. In "The Family Madrigal", the Town Kids ask Mirabel what her gift is, but she tries to deflect by explaining her other family member's gifts. Dolores overhears this and explains to the kids that Mirabel didn't get a gift. Mirabel reassures to the children that she is just as special as the rest of her family, whether she has a gift or not. She proceeds to help her family with preparations, but Pepa begins to panic about Antonio's gift ceremony, causing her to unintentionally create a mini hurricane that damages the flowers. Isabela arrives to calm her aunt down, swinging dramatically down from the upper level of the house on a vine. The townspeople looked on in admiration, applauding as Mirabel gave Isabela a look of annoyance. Isabela gave Pepa a bouquet of flowers with a smile, helping her aunt calm down. As they left, Isabela "accidentally" flipped her hair in Mirabel's face and rolled her eyes, telling her sister she should stop trying so hard to be helpful. Mirabel tried to explain that she was just trying to help, but Isabela walked away, rolling her eyes once more as Mirabel walked into a pole.
Mirabel saddened by Alma's disapproval of helping with Antonio's ceremony. When Mirabel returned home with party supplies given to her by Osvaldo, Julieta told her that she didn't need to overdo it. Mirabel insisted that she was simply doing her part like the rest of the family, but, Agustín concurred with Julieta, mentioning that Antonio's upcoming gift ceremony would be the first one since Mirabel’s. Agustín then shared with Mirabel that when he and Félix joined the family through marriage, they felt like outsiders who would never receive a gift, always in the shadow of more accomplished family members. He empathized with Mirabel's potential feelings of inadequacy, but she politely declined his offer. Both Agustín and Julieta assured Mirabel that she had nothing to prove, as she walked away giving a thumbs up in agreement. After decorating the outside of the rooms in the house with lights, Mirabel sadly looks at the family portraits of those who have received their magical gifts, knowing she is the only one without a gift. Alma arrives, questioning Mirabel's decision to leave the decorations to someone else. Mirabel explains that she made the decorations as a surprise, but Alma, though appreciative of Mirabel's intentions, advises her to step aside and allow the other family members with magical gifts to take the lead. She explains that it is crucial to rely on those with magical abilities effectively and not to undermine their talents. Alma's words leave Mirabel feeling frustrated as if she is being treated as insignificant. Despite her disappointment, Mirabel nods in agreement and heads to the nursery with a heavy heart.
While walking Antonio down the aisle, Mirabel remembers the night when she was denied a gift. In the nursery room, Mirabel discovers Antonio hiding under the bed, worried that his ceremony will fail just like hers. She comforts her cousin, assuring him that he will receive a special gift and that it will be the best day ever. Mirabel promises to stay with him in the nursery if he fails. When Antonio expresses a desire for her to have her own door, Mirabel's eyes sinks a little, but she assures him that he doesn't need to worry about her. She surprises him with a stuffed jaguar as a birthday present before Casita interrupts them, reminding them that it's time for the ceremony to start. However, when Antonio's ceremony begins, he is still too nervous to walk to his door and asks Mirabel to accompany him. Knowing that Alma will disapprove and how everyone will react, Mirabel initially refuses, but reluctantly agrees after Antonio whispers that he needs her. Walking Antonio to his door triggers painful memories of her own failed gift ceremony wherein her door vanished instead of granting her a gift after she touched the knob, causing panic among the townspeople and rest of the family. As five-year-old Mirabel gazes at her horrified grandmother, she believes she has let them all down. However, Antonio's ceremony is a success and he gains the ability to talk to animals. While happy for him, Mirabel's smile fades as Alma declares his gift to be just as special. As her family takes a picture without her, in "Waiting on a Miracle", Mirabel expresses her insecurities about being the only member without a magical gift and her desire to be treated equally.
Mirabel learns about Luisa's powers becoming weaker when she saw the cracks. Mirabel was in the courtyard when a roof tile suddenly fell and crashed to the ground. As she gently picked it up, she got a cut on her hand. The house started shaking, and cracks began to appear all over. When she tried to show Alma and everyone, no one believed her - everything seemed normal to them, so they went back to the party. Later that night, she opens up to Julieta and assures her that she would never ruin Antonio's gift ceremony. Julieta recalls how difficult that day was for Mirabel, but Mirabel explains she was just trying to protect the family. Feeling down, Mirabel questions her worth compared to her family, but Julieta assures her that she is just as special as everyone else and hopes she can see that for herself. As Julieta heals Mirabel's hand, Mirabel brings up her mother's contradictions, which makes Julieta seem as though she is ignoring her feelings and values. Despite Julieta's attempts to show affection through kisses and half-hearted compliments, Mirabel remains unhappy, causing Julieta to worry that she may follow Bruno's footsteps of disconnecting from the family and suggests she get some rest, promising things will be better tomorrow. During the night when she overhears Alma saying that she believes her, Mirabel decides to jump into action to save the family and the miracle.
Mirabel and Agustín realizing Dolores will tell everyone about Bruno's vision. The next morning, she asks Dolores, who was gifted with super hearing, what's going on and she tells her that Luisa's eye was twitching all night. While confronting her older sister, Luisa in "Surface Pressure", confesses that she felt so much pressure to live up to Abuela Alma's expectations and her fear of breaking down at the prospect of failing. Mirabel hugs her and says that she carries too much, only for Luisa to return the hug, squeezing Mirabel in the process and reveals to her that her powers became weaker when she saw the cracks. Luisa suggests that Mirabel go to Bruno's old room, recalling that he once had a vision about the family's magic. Mirabel enters to see that it is a giant sand-filled cave and discovers a vision that supposedly shows Mirabel being the cause of the house cracking apart. Upon leaving, Luisa reveals that her strength is fading as Abuela tells Mirabel to stay away from Luisa until she can talk to her and tells her whatever she is doing, she must stop it. When Mirabel asked her family about Bruno, during "We Don't Talk About Bruno" everyone tells her not to mention Bruno because his gift caused so many problems. When Agustín sees the vision, he tells her to keep it a secret from everyone, but unfortunately, Dolores overhears this conversation and couldn't keep it a secret, much to Mirabel and her father's dread. When she blabs it during the dinner and proposal to Isabela from Mariano, both were ruined and most of the family blames Mirabel, despite her trying to convince them that she had nothing to do with the incident.
Mirabel realizing she has to embrace Isabela, much to her utter annoyance. Mirabel notices some rats taking the pieces of Bruno's vision and stumbles upon a secret passage concealed behind a painting in the walls. Inside, she encounters a cloaked figure and attempts to follow him, nearly falling through the floor in the process. The figure comes to her rescue, only to reveal that the hole is not very deep - exposing himself as Bruno. Mirabel thought Bruno was acting a little strange at first, with his habit of knocking on wood, stumbling, muttering to himself, and even coming up with two different personas called "Hernando" and "Jorge". To keep himself busy in isolation, he has been making spackle and befriended some rats for company. But then Mirabel noticed an empty spot next to the kitchen and dining area where Bruno had been spending time. Bruno admitted to Mirabel that he didn't think his gift was helping the family, but deep down, he still cared about them. Mirabel shared her desire to make the family proud, but she started to wonder if her actions were actually hurting them. Bruno couldn't give her a straight answer because he wasn't sure himself. However, he had a vision on the night when Mirabel didn't receive her gift: Alma asked him to look into the future, and he saw the magic in danger, the house crumbling, and Mirabel. The vision had two outcomes - a good one and a bad one - as if the future was still undecided. Bruno didn't know what it meant, but he knew what everyone will think because he's Bruno and everyone always assume the worst, and so he revealed that he shattered the vision and left to protect Mirabel so she would not be ostracized like he was by Abuela.
Mirabel and Isabela hugs it out, fulfilling Bruno's vision. Now burdened with the knowledge that the fate of the miracle may rest on Mirabel's shoulders, she reassured Bruno and encouraged him to make a new prediction that wouldn't result in harm to the family, with Antonio offered them the use of his room after being informed by the rats. The prediction shows the same thing until it shows that Mirabel has to embrace Isabela to make the candle brighter, much to her utter annoyance. Despite expressing her disdain towards Isabela and questioning how hugging her would save the magic, even bringing up how she ruined her proposal, Bruno insisted that it was not about Isabela, but rather Mirabel being the one the family needed and she had to see it. Before leaving, Bruno made Mirabel promise to bring him home after she saved the miracle. Upon entering Isabela's room, Mirabel suggested they hug it out, but Isabela scoffs at this suggestion and demands Mirabel to apologize for "ruining" her life. When Mirabel sarcastically apologizes, Isabela sends her out of her room, at least until Mirabel calls her a "selfish entitled princess". Stung by those words, Isabela confesses how miserable she really was: she felt so much pressure of being perfect all the time and she never wanted to marry Mariano, only doing so for the family, causing a small cactus to grow. After this confession, Mirabel gets Isabela to realize that she doesn't have to be perfect and grow more than just flowers with her gift. In "What Else Can I Do?", Mirabel helps Isabela embrace her true self and they share a hug right in front of the candle, fulfilling Bruno's vision. Isabela playfully calls Mirabel a bad influence after the musical number.
Mirabel angrily points to Alma as the true cause of the miracle dying. Unfortunately, Alma comes into the house and discovers what's going on as she had been alerted to what happened while apologizing to the Guzmáns for the chaos at the proposal. Mirabel tries to explain what's happening and how she's found the answer to save the miracle, but Alma snaps at her and blames her for hurting the family, Bruno's departure, Luisa's powers failing, and Isabela going wild all because she wasn't given a gift, accusing her of harming the family out of jealousy and spite. Finally fed up with this treatment, Mirabel angrily snaps back at Alma and tells her that she will never be good enough for her, no matter how hard she tries. When Mirabel looks at her sisters, she realizes that no one, even with their gifts, will ever be good enough for Alma and defends Luisa and Isabela by saying they will never be strong enough or perfect enough. While reaching her breaking point, she points out that Bruno left the family because Alma always saw the worst in him and she is the reason that the miracle is dying, which utterly shocks and horrifies Alma, while Mirabel also becomes shocked by what she said. This heated fight creates a fissure that splits one of the nearby mountains of the range that protects Encanto and demolishes the Casa Madrigal as the miracle candle melts and extinguishes, leaving the Madrigals powerless. Feeling guilty for what she said to Alma and believing she was responsible for everything, Mirabel runs away in shame through the mountains of Encanto, while her family tried to find her.
Mirabel reconciles with her Abuela Alma as they share a hug after a decade. The next day, Mirabel still hasn't been found by anyone. A tearful Mirabel sits alone by the river where Pedro was killed and releases stress until Alma finds her. Mirabel apologizes and says that she never wanted to hurt the family, she just wanted to prove herself that she's worthy, even though she doesn't have a gift. They have a heart to heart talk and Alma revealed the trauma she went through in the past when she lost Pedro, her home, and her village, and apologizes, assuring Mirabel it wasn't her fault, but rather hers as she was so afraid to lose their family's miracle and second chance, that she unknowingly put so much emotional trauma on them due to years of suffering and heartache that she never healed from, finally accepting that everything that happened was all her fault and not Mirabel's because of her own paranoia and fear. Now knowing and understanding Alma better, Mirabel encourages her by saying that they were given a miracle and are a family because of her, and what can be broken can still be fixed as Alma still has her children, grandchildren, and in-laws for support, so she doesn't have to bear the burden alone anymore. The two reconcile as they embrace, repairing their relationship and truly fulfilling Bruno's vision.
Mirabel working with her sisters in rebuilding the house. Shortly afterwards, Bruno arrives on horseback to confront Alma, but is utterly surprised to see his mother embracing him instead of yelling at him, apologizing for driving him away because of her own fear. The two ride the horse with a resolute Mirabel as they all go back to the Encanto. Once they arrived at the rubble of their home, Mirabel has a warm reunion with her parents, then she convinces her family, magic or not, that they can rebuild their house if they work together. During "All of You", Alma apologizes to her family for holding on too tight, fearing she would lose them too after losing Pedro, and they all reunite with Bruno. Right after that, the whole town gathers together to help the Madrigals fix their house, as a show of gratitude for everything they have done for them. As everyone works, Mirabel is seen raising a pillar with her sisters, when Luisa said that she cries sometimes. Isabela and Mirabel hugged their sister, saying they cry as well. Later, Mirabel sees Mariano sad and asks him what's wrong, which in response, says he has much love inside to give. She watches Dolores finally confesses the love she feels for him. Falling in love by her words, Mariano returns his feelings for her, much to Mirabel and Isabela's joy.
Mirabel happy that the magic returned to the Casita. When everyone finally finishes rebuilding the Casa Madrigal, except for the front doorknob, Mirabel is surprised when she discovers that her family handcrafted the doorknob just for her. Antonio leads her to the front door, where she feels overwhelmed with emotion, realizing that her family truly sees and appreciates her bravery, determination, and kindness. Alma asks her the same question she did when Mirabel was five, and as Mirabel sees her reflection in the doorknob, she answers that she sees herself, finally accepts herself for who she truly is—not defined by a magical ability, not by her family’s expectations, but by her own worth. Adding the doorknob to "her new door" unleashes a new source of magic that revives Casita and restores the gifts of the Madrigals. The new front door features carvings of all the Madrigals, including those who have married into the family, Félix and Agustín. Casita then brings everyone inside, as Mirabel watches as her relatives retrieve their gifts and can use them in ways that make them happy. The Casa Madrigal brings the Madrigals together for a new family photo, when Casita suddenly brings everyone closer, making an imperfect family picture.

Antonio Madrigal is a major character in Disney's 2021 animated feature film Encanto. He is the youngest son of Pepa and Félix Madrigal, and the younger brother of Dolores and Camilo. The youngest member of The Madrigals, Antonio is gifted with the power to communicate with animals. Background Born into the Madrigal family, Antonio is the youngest member of the family. Antonio is the youngest son of Pepa and Félix, and the younger brother of Dolores and Camilo. In addition to being the nephew of Julieta, Bruno and Agustín, Antonio is also the cousin of Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel. Being too young and not having a gift yet, his Abuela Alma never put expectations or pressures on Antonio's shoulders like other members of the family. Also due to being the youngest member of The Madrigals and being born after his uncle left the family, Antonio was never able to meet Bruno and thus has no memory of him. Prior to his gift ceremony, he lives in the nursery with Mirabel due to his cousin never receiving a magical gift. Antonio greatly admires Mirabel to the point of considering her a big sister. What makes Antonio unique amongst the Madrigal family is his ability to talk to and understand non-human animals, among which are capybaras (one named Chispi[2]), toucans (with Pico among them), hummingbirds, coatis, a tapir, and a jaguar named Parce,[3] all of whom assist Antonio. He is capable of keeping other animals under control and in safe condition, such as reminding Parce not to eat the rats, as they can help him. Official Description The youngest of the Madrigal family, Antonio is shy with a huge heart. He has a special connection to Mirabel, relying on her for comfort and courage, especially on an important day when his cousin finds him nervously hiding under his bed.[4]Antonio is the youngest son of Pepa and Félix. Sweet and shy, he has a warm relationship with Mirabel and supports her. Antonio has the ability to communicate with animals. He becomes fast friends with a ferocious but friendly jaguar and a toucan, who help when the magic of the Encanto is in danger.[5] Development As with the rest of the Madrigal family, Antonio was designed to reflect "family archetypes that are immediately relatable".[6] As in the final production, the studio created Antonio from the start as the youngest of his family in order to show how most of the Madrigals receive their magical gifts. Other elements that did not change during the creation process were Antonio's sweet but very shy personality and his magical gift of communicating with animals. To create his appearance, the studio explored many different facial features and hair tones for Antonio while for his clothing they wanted it to be colorful and incorporates the animals he can communicate with. Antonio's voice actor, Ravi-Cabot Conyers, described his character as follows: "Antonio's gift is talking to animals and communicating with them. And they can communicate with him. And he's kind of an introvert… but he also has a really big heart. I also think that he can communicate with all different sorts of people."[7] Personality As the youngest member in his family, Antonio is very sweet and innocent. He loves his family so much and is willing to do anything to help them, such as he willingly offered his ostracized uncle, Bruno (whom he had no memory of and just met), to use his room so he can have a vision in order for him and Mirabel to figure out how to save their family's magic. Antonio shares a close relationship with his older cousin, Mirabel where he looks up to her for comfort and wishes she had a magical gift, knowing how hard it must be for her to be the only child in their family to not have any magical abilities. It is this profound empathy for his cousin that earns him the trust of Bruno's rats who inform Antonio of his uncle and cousin's whereabouts and predicament. Antonio is also a very shy individual and has trouble being around other people, except for his family. He gets stage fright very easily and prefers to interact only with his family and animal friends. Yet, when members of his family get nervous, Antonio would go to help them, such as when he gave Bruno his stuffed jaguar doll to calm his nerves before he did his vision and escorted Mirabel to the newly-built Casa Madrigal so she can put a new doorknob on the front door. Physical appearance Antonio is a 5-year-old Colombian boy with dark skin, dark brown eyes, and curly black hair. He wears a long-sleeved yellow and light orange striped shirt with an orange sleeveless vest over it, along with a red scarf. He has brown jeans and dark beige and orange shoes. Symbolizing his gift, Antonio's vest has some animals sewn on it. During his gift ceremony, following the tradition, he wears white clothes similar to his normal ones, but with a white vest instead of a scarf. Powers and abilities Antonio has the power to communicate with animals. Because of this, he has a lot of animals in his room, from capybaras to toucans to hummingbirds, coati, a tapir, and even a jaguar. Antonio cannot control the animals he talks to; this is strictly based on the bonds of trust and closeness he builds with them that allows him to rely on them for help and companionship, as well as to discourage undesirable behavior, such as when he warned Parce from eating his uncle Bruno's rats. Appearances Encanto Antonio first appears accompanying his family to the village as they get ready to celebrate his fifth birthday and gift ceremony. He is dressed in a white suit by his grandmother, Alma Madrigal, as his cousin, Mirabel, explains during "The Family Madrigal" how he will be receiving a magical gift during his fifth birthday. Later, before the beginning of the ceremony, he hid underneath Mirabel's bed in her room, anxious that his gift ceremony would fail like hers. However, Mirabel was able to encourage him to come out of hiding and gives him a stuffed jaguar as a birthday present. They share a hug before Casa Madrigal tells them that the ceremony is about to be begin. Antonio was then wished good luck by his family and his parents tell him that they'll be waiting for him at his door. When the gift ceremony starts, Antonio became too anxious to go forward. He held out his hand to Mirabel, as he wants her to accompany him. Mirabel initially refused, knowing that Alma will disapprove of it and how everyone will react. As he desperately whispered that he needs her, Mirabel reluctantly takes his hand. The other Madrigals were stunned upon seeing that Antonio wants Mirabel to accompany him. After climbing up the stairs, he swore to use his gift to help the community by Alma and upon putting his hand on the doorknob of his door, a toucan suddenly landed on his arm and he immediately understood it and when the bird asked him if all of his friends could come, Antonio happily agreed. Upon entering his magic door, he was astonished upon seeing that his new room is a big and beautiful jungle with a big tree. A jaguar then suddenly came in and gave Antonio a ride on his back. After that, he and the rest of the family, sans Mirabel, had a group picture. The next morning, Antonio joined his family in eating breakfast outside. He had his new animals warm up Abuela's seat at the breakfast table so she would feel comfortable. Though Abuela was quite surprised, she thanked her youngest grandson. Antonio found out from the rats that Bruno was living in the walls of Casita. Upon hearing Bruno and Mirabel's conversation, he offers his room to substitute for Bruno's. After the house crumbled and the family's magic faded, Antonio helped rebuild the house. Like his gift ceremony, he walks Mirabel up the pathway and hands over the doorknob with Mirabel's initial on it and witnessed her placing it on the front door, which reignited the magic. He rides Parce around Casita before taking a picture with his family.
