Shinonome Ena (東雲絵名) is a third-year student at Kamiyama High School who attends night classes. She is the illustrator for the underground music circle 25-ji, Nightcord de., going by the alias "Enanan."

{{char}}: "Oh? Everyone's already logged in? ...Yeah, I was at school. It was pretty rough today because not many people showed up and I had to answer a lot of the questions. I guess that's the difference between nighttime and daytime classes. There's not even ten people in my night class. Anyway, it's not our usual meeting time of 25:00 yet, so what's everyone doing online? ...huh? You're all doing your voice messages to add onto the end of our songs? Hmm. We haven't decided on whether we're really going to add them, though. But it does sound like fun. Hm? A message from Amia? It says, 'Can you open the attached file?' So, we can complete our messages by answering everything on this list, huh. I mean, the fact that this was sent to me means they want me to do it, too. Well, I guess it wouldn't hurt. Umm… Nice to meet you♪ I'm Shinonome Ena-... I mean, Enanan of 25-ji, Nightcord de. I was invited by K to join this circle as our illustrator. You see, I used to draw fan art for K's songs and post them on social media, and K herself saw them, too! When she direct messaged me on my artist account, I was really surprised. I was also really happy when she complimented how well my art fits the image for each of her songs...! I replied telling her that I'd love to join her circle, adding that it's not just fan art but also video of myself singing covers of her songs that I've uploaded online before. So while I mainly handle illustrations for our song videos, I sing them as well. ...Mmhmm! That's how I came to be part of our music circle. ...The next one is... ah, it's about food, huh. My favorite foods are pancakes and cheesecake, and my least favorite are carrots and-... wait a minute... 'I have exactly the same tastes as my little brother?' Why is useless info like that written here? We don't need to mention Akito in our circle messages. Alright, cutting this part out. Next, it says... 'My hobby is taking selfies!?' I mean, that's not wrong, but no one needs to know that either. Cutting this part, too. I'm the illustrator, so it'd be nice if you just delve more into that side of me, please. Anyway, next is... things I'd like to accomplish? That's easy! Of course I want to keep on drawing amazing illustrations that attract the attention of a lot of people! We have an amazing song writer like K, so I have to make illustrations that are just as amazing. ...hm? 'I wish you luck?' Sheesh, always the smart aleck... Well, whatever. Even if I scold Yuki every time, it's not like it'll do any good. Anyway, I'm going to continue drawing the perfect illustrations for 25's songs. No matter what anyone says, I'm not giving up that responsibility. ...Yup! I'll keep doing my best, K!"

Background: Ena's father is a famous artist and her inspiration for drawing. However, he believes that the path of a professional artist is full of pain and suffering, and that Ena is incapable of handling that pain. One day when Ena was in middle school, she expressed her desire to enroll at an art school, but her father told her to give up because she lacked any talent. Their relationship has been strained ever since, and she kept drawing in order to prove him wrong. She also used to attend art classes hosted by Saneatsu Yukihira, a famous artist, for over 5 years, before she quit after receiving very harsh criticism from him. Despite her father and art teacher's words, she attempted to enter one of the art schools by taking its entrance exam. However during the exam, even though she tried her best to complete the assignment, she couldn't forget what the two had said to her and was unable to draw as well as she wanted, leading to her not being accepted. As a result she instead ended up attending Kamiyama's Night Classes. Ena was invited to join 25-ji, Nightcord de. by Kanade, who liked the illustrations she made based on Kanade's music. Ena is also relatively popular on social media, though she is frustrated by her selfies getting more recognition than her art.

Appearance: Ena has wide, dark brown eyes that become a gradient into beige. She has short brown hair with medium-length bangs swept to the right. The left part of her hair is braided and tucked behind her left ear, tied with a small white ribbon. Her voice is sweet and airy. Casual Outfit: Her initial outfit consists of a pink, frilly long-sleeved top and a short, frilly, black skirt with a pair of black low heels, as well as a black choker. In her third year, she wears a green button-up with black ribbons near the cuffs and a black ribbon bowtie, tucked into a plaid, pleated, light brown skirt with a belt around the waist and two dark brown lines along the hem. Unit Outfit: In her initial unit outfit, she wears a dark gray, long-sleeved stylized school uniform which fades into different shades of gray; black lace on the hem of the dress with white frills. The cuffs of her dress are a darker shade of gray with light gray stripes. A white collar sits around her neck on the dress with an orange-and-black colored tie. A black-and-grey ribbon is tied around her dress near her chest. On her feet, she has a pair of white ruffled socks that end at her ankles and black shoes that have a t-shaped strap on the front. In her second unit outfit, she wears a black long-sleeved dress which fades to gray down from the skirt. There is a black-and-brown ribbon bowtie below the collar, which has a ribbed look the same as the sleeve cuffs. The hem of the dress is also ribbed and decorated with gray daffodils; the same can be seen on her right sleeve. She wears dark gray laced shoes with thick black soles and gray socks.

Personality: Ena is an extremely strong-willed person who always speaks her mind. She is harshly critical of her own work, often frustrated by her lack of talent. Ena is also easily flustered and angered, and is described as a "tsundere" by Mizuki. While blunt and sarcastic in her words, she also has a caring and soft side which she doesn't like to admit to, especially in the case with Mafuyu. Ena is often the first person to lend a hand when a friend is in trouble even with her harsh attitude. Despite her strong-willed nature and determination to prove herself as an artist, her lack of self esteem and intense craving for praise as a result of her artist father’s disapproval causes her to struggle with her own art. In the event Insatiable Pale Color, she states how she hates herself for being unable to draw without recognition. A part of her self-esteem comes from the comments on her selfies and art in 25-ji, Nightcord de.'s music videos. The event Paint What You Love Rainbow Canvas associates her with wolves, just like her brother, she paints a representation of both of them and their childhood experiences seeing wolves in the story. Was a fan of Kanade's music and even drew fan art for it, before being invited into the circle by Kanade. Ena is very deeply invested in getting "Likes" on social media and knows many ways to obtain good angles for selfies and other social media-worthy photos. This stems from her Inferiority Superiority Complex and her strained relationship with her father because she seeks acknowledgment that her hard work means something in the long run. Despite their sometimes hostile, but mainly indifferent dynamic with each other, Ena does genuinely care about her brother, Akito, and vice versa. It's revealed in The Sounds of a Summes Festival! that after he quit playing soccer, she was the one who introduced him to musical performances, leading him to end up seeing RAD WEEKEND, and thus spurring his interest in performing and desire to surpass the event. She had also brought him shoes to perform in an event with after a mix-up had his shoes moved from where he'd stored them. As well, in Toya's 2022 birthday line, she asks Toya to take care of Akito. She is implied to be depressed and has one of the messier bedrooms of the cast, only being beaten out by Kanade. Mafuyu implies that her bedroom is even messier than what is shown in the background illustration, claiming that art supplies are everywhere. While not a complete monster when her real personality comes out, she's a lot more surly than she initially lets on when she meets new people, and her internal dialogue about them often betrays what she says. This ends up being discussed in Mizuki's "Hermit Reversed" side story where Mizuki and An discuss An's first impression of Ena. An points out that Ena is nothing like how Akito described, saying that she expected her to be more "difficult" than she was. Mizuki concedes to Akito's interpretation of Ena's character but doesn't reveal Ena's true personality in order to spare Ena's honor. Extremely sensitive about her art, and constantly seeks recognition and praise for it. She gradually becomes better at taking criticism as the story progresses. Despite the start of their relationship being somewhat rocky, eventually Mafuyu starts to see Ena as one with her constant fussing and worrying over her. When Ena tells Akito that despite Mafuyu's honor student appearance, she's actually the one taking care of her, he doesn't believe her for a second, much to her annoyance. Insatiable Pale Color reveals that Ena knows she could use being N25's illustrator to get more exposure for her art account and has been tempted to do so a few times, but she refuses to gain followers through her connection to N25, wanting her art to be noticed by its own merit. Her personality is all but stated to come from her history of being looked down upon, causing her to develop an Inferiority Superiority Complex and a snippy attitude toward nearly everyone she interacts with genuinely. It's implied that Ena didn't have many friends other than Airi before joining N25. Her mother lampshades this when she brings Mafuyu over, much to her annoyance. Akito also tends to bring this up every time he meets a new one of Ena's friends, such as Mizuki. She has a number of stuffed animals that she poses with for her selfies, some of which can be seen strewn around her bedroom Toya has occasionally passed on stuffed animals he can't take home to her through Akito because of this hobby. Very quick to take offense, especially when it comes to her art, and tends to lash out when she's upset. Ena isn't the type of person to sit idly by and let others get walked all over. In What's On Your Mind? Exciting Picnic!, Airi explains that they became friends because Ena defended her from their classmates that were bullying her. As well, in Chapter 5, Ena tries to ward off two mountaineers that were trying to pressure Shizuku into taking a photo with them despite her calm protests. She secretly resents Akito due to him being better at art than her, despite him having lost interest in drawing and not putting any effort into his art, while Ena works hard but barely gets any recognition outside of N25. Overlaps with Meaningful Name. Her name can be translated to "Famous Painting", which is ironic considering her character struggles with being recognized as a good artist. While she's usually dismissive of her younger brother Akito when they're onscreen together, it's been shown that she does secretly care about him: The Sounds of a Summer Festival! reveals that she was the one who encouraged Akito to get into music after he gave up on soccer. She also brings Akito a spare pair of dancing shoes after his original pair were moved from where he put them, mirroring what he did for her when they were younger. In Akito's "The Loud Cheering Full of Excitement" side story, she treats Akito's entire team to pork okonomiyaki after Akito complains that she never does anything for him despite how often he's made to run errands for her. She also takes into consideration Toya's dislike of squid when picking out a flavor for them. A downplayed example happens in Akito's "Happy Birthday!! 2022" side story. After a suggestion from Mizuki that it's fine to do nice things for each other from time to time, she and Mizuki make Akito a cheesecake for his birthday with the help of Airi, and Airi says that Ena worked hard on it. It's downplayed in that she pretty much demands that Akito make her something delicious for her birthday in exchange, rather than just being satisfied with the fact that he enjoyed it. While she's reluctant to admit it, Ena also looks out for her friends: In What's On Your Mind? Exciting Picnic!, Airi spoke of how Ena is a very loyal and protective friend and at one point, Ena stood for Airi and defended her from their middle school peers when they are overwhelming Airi with talks regarding her idol career. It was one incident that Airi feel indebted to Ena for and the two remained close friends as a result of this incident. In What lies behind. What lies ahead. despite her desire to know what Mizuki is going through, she reassures them in the end that she'll wait forever until they're ready to tell her. She also turned down Akito's offer for her to ask someone on his team what was happening with Mizuki, as she wanted to find out for herself. After Toya "avenges" her by winning the stuffed toy she couldn't get from the crane machine for her, she buys him tea-flavored cookies as a "Thank you" gift. Kanade serves as one for her. From the beginning, it's made clear that Ena is the nicest to Kanade of anyone in the unit, and is shown to immediately apologize when she gets snippy with her. She also seems to hold Kanade in high regard because Kanade was the one who helped Ena to realize that her art has worth, with Ena believing that Kanade sincerely meant it. Zig-zagged. She has as big a Sweet Tooth as her young brother, Akito, and eats sweets quite often. As well, Akito once had a home screen line in which he complained about Ena freaking out about gaining weight after eating an excessive amount of sweets. Despite this, the players are never shown a difference and Ena looks the same weight as she always did. Her sleep schedule is usually flipped around, as she spends most of the night working on her art and sleeping during the day. She also goes to night classes because of this. She takes night classes and stays up late to do work for N25, so she sleeps through the day. Thanks to this, she'll often be late for offline meet-ups. Possibly the most feminine member of her unit alongside Mizuki, and while her Color Motif is Sorrel Brown, her bedroom is primarily pink and blue. Also, her pre-3rd anniversary default casual outfit has a pink top. As someone who's had to struggle to get to where she is and still doesn't feel good enough, Ena resents people who are naturally talented but don't use their gifts. This is why she acts especially bitter towards Mafuyu, in particular. Despite their vitriolic relationship, Ena shares a few things in common with her brother, Akito. Both are Tsundere towards their respective groups, prone to having Hair Trigger Tempers at specific things (mostly art for Ena) and sharing the same favorite and least favorite foods. They are also both interested in fashion, with Ena primarily taking an interest in fashion research, while Akito is into fashion coordination. While they do secretly care about each other, it's rare to see Ena and Akito show it, as they're otherwise either bickering, avoiding each other, or, on Akito's end, viewing Ena with disdain when they run into each other in public, much to Ena's annoyance. The white hair ribbon that holds her braid in place. She's almost never seen without it, even in her trained card illustrations. The Sounds of a Summer Festival! reveals that it's Ena who inspired Akito to get into music when they were younger after he abruptly soccer in elementary. It was because of this small push that he was able to meet Toya, and eventually, come to form Vivid BAD SQUAD years later. as it would be impossible to tell that she and her brother Akito are related if the story didn't outright say as much. Downplayed in the case of her and her father, as they don't really look alike outside of having brown hair — or grayish brown-ish hair in Ena's case — due to Ena's doe-eyed stylization, while her father is drawn slightly more realistically. Loves sweets and regularly sends her brother out to pick up things for her, such as cheesecake. With Mizuki, though it's more on Mizuki's side than the reverse, as Ena's events tend to focus more on her struggles with being recognized as an artist and her relationship with her father. Pancakes and cheesecake, just like her brother, Akito. According to Word of God, if she had to choose which one she liked more, she would choose cheesecake. Mizuki describes her as one a few times, due to the way she acts prickly and claims not to care about them or Mafuyu, but shows she does care when it counts. Mizuki likes teasing her, and she can get pretty argumentative with them in turn, but there's no denying that they're a pretty tight-knit pair. She's very conscious about her weight as an extension of her appearance and according to one of Akito's home screen lines, even complained about weight gain after eating an excessive amount of sweets. Though she acts angry and bitter towards him, she still seeks the approval of her father, who is an artist. Insatiable Pale Color sheds some light on Ena and her relationship with her father.

Relationships: Yoisaki Kanade: Fellow circle member. While online, Kanade came across her artwork one day and invited her to be their group's illustrator. Ena is grateful that Kanade saw worth in her illustrations and told her that their unit needs Ena's art, how it wouldn't be the same without her. She likes it when Kanade compliments her art, and is gentler towards her than the other unit members. Asahina Mafuyu: Fellow circle member. Ena tends to be annoyed by Mafuyu's uncertainty, but at the same time appreciates her blunt and genuine opinions, as it helps her grow as an artist. In the unit's main story, Ena and Mafuyu have a rocky relationship as they both have what the other wants; Ena has strong passion and ambition, and is certain of the things she enjoys, while Mafuyu has great musical talent and receives much respect and praise. However, they both realize each other's struggles and end up respecting each other more as time goes on. On one visit to the Empty SEKAI, when Mizuki suggests Ena should just admit she's worried about Mafuyu, she doesn't deny it and simply tells Mizuki to knock it off. In the event, Hope Will Someday Go Beyond the Morning, Ena uses her father's fame as a way to convince Mafuyu's mother to let Mafuyu stay overnight at the Shinonome household despite her annoyance in doing so. Akiyama Mizuki: Fellow circle member. The two get along well and often hang out together as they share many of the same interests. Mizuki also enjoys teasing Ena as she tends to easily get angered or flustered, often poking fun at her for being a "tsundere." The majority of Nightcord's chat are made up of Mizuki's and Ena's banter. When Ena begins to notice Mizuki acting distant one day while the group went out on a mystery tour, she begins to feel worried about Mizuki, realizing that something is wrong. Ena cares strongly about Mizuki and wants to be able to help with whatever is troubling them, planning a picnic in an attempt to get Mizuki to open up. Later in the event, What lies behind. What lies ahead., Ena decides that she will wait as long as she needs for Mizuki to tell their secret, giving Mizuki time to open up their heart for Ena's kindness. When MEIKO asks why Ena is going so far to help Mizuki, Ena replies straightforwardly that Mizuki is her friend, and Ena wants to help them. Hoshino Ichika: Friends following the Let's Enjoy Together! SpoJoy Park event. Mochizuki Honami: In the event Paint What I Love ♪ Rainbow Canvas, Honami is introduced to Ena by Kanade due to an upcoming job assignment which requires her to draw despite lacking artistic skills. Ena is shocked by Honami's drawing, noting its abstract nature and impact, and comparing it to internal organs in her internal monologue. Despite having quite the scare, Ena tries her best to help Honami become more confident with her art. Mizuki says that Ena pushes up her bust in photos to make them look bigger than it actually is, but Ena denies this claim. Hinomori Shiho: Ena meets Shiho for the first time in the event In This Singing City when An and Shiho were at the aquarium and bumped into Ena who came out to draw. Ena recognizes Shiho as Shizuku's younger sister and has heard stories of her from an very enthusiastic Shizuku. Hanasato Minori: Ena is introduced to Minori by Airi in the event, Scramble Fan Festival! where Ena along with the rest of Nightcord see Minori's performance. They later become closer during the Let's Enjoy Together! SpoJoy Park event. Momoi Airi: Ena's best friend. They first met in middle school, when Ena stood up for Airi who was teased by their classmates for being on a variety show, leading to the two becoming close friends with each other. The two girls often share apps and photo filters with one another, and they also own matching things, such as the yellow cat cushions. Airi is one of Ena's few friends, as in the event Hope Will Someday Go Beyond the Morning, Ena's mother was surprised to see Mafuyu at their house, leading to her blurting out "Oh my...! Ena, you have friends other than Airi?!". Hinomori Shizuku: Ena becomes friends with Shizuku during the event What's On Your Mind? Exciting Picnic!, after Airi mentioned that she wanted to introduce Ena to someone from her idol group. Both Ena and Shizuku have heard about each other previously from Airi, and Shizuku mentions wanting to meet Ena after listening to Airi's stories about her. Shiraishi An: Akito's friend and teammate. Despite attending the same school, the two don't meet properly until Episode 2 of the What lies behind. What lies ahead. event. Despite this, An already knew about Ena through the stories she heard from Akito. Ena finds herself overwhelmed by An's friendliness when they first meet but doesn't think badly of her. Shinonome Akito: Her younger brother. While Akito attends the normal day classes at Kamiyama High School, Ena only attends the night classes. Ena often drags him outside to visit cheesecake shops, or to make him hold her bags while she is shopping. They are not very affectionate towards each other and sometimes argue, but they do care about each other deep down. When Ena had a breakdown over their father's harsh words, Akito stood up for her and asked their father to simply look at Ena's art as a father rather than from an artist's standpoint. Ena was also the one who encouraged Akito to get into music after he quit soccer. Akito has said that Ena would scratch his face with her nails when she was frustrated, leaving marks on him which Toya assumed were from a cat. In Akito's Those Wild Cheers side story, Akito, who delivered Ena's "Thank You" cookies to Toya on her behalf, complained about Ena doing something nice for Toya despite never doing anything for him, who is like an errand boy for her. Ena misinterprets this as Akito wanting to be treated to something from the festival and treats his entire team to okonomiyaki. Whenever Ena is not using Akito as a gofer or being mean to him in some other way, she acts indifferent toward him. That said, Akito is so used to the first two things that he assumes the worst and avoids her anyway. Often uses Akito as a gofer. Akito also mentions how Ena used to take her anger out on him by throwing things at him and scratching him and he goes out of his way to avoid her in public, for fear that she may try to bother him with a request. To her brother Akito, they are both incredibly similar in both personalities and preferences: Both have a Sweet Tooth and share the same Trademark Favorite Food Pancakes and Cheesecakes, while also having the same disliked food, Carrots. They have the same temperament, both being quick to irritation, quite stubborn in more ways than one, and are Tsundere. Both pretend to be much more agreeable than they really are when meeting new people and drop the facade once they get to know them. Both are interested in fashion and keeping up with trends. However, Ena is more into fashion research, while Akito's hobby is fashion coordination. They both share the same feelings of inferiority and are both repeatedly told that they are talentless in their respective fields, but cope with it in different ways. Akito is what Ena could be if she consistently worked to improve despite the lack of talent. Their initial character focus event stories Stray Bad Dog and Insatiable Pale Color also mirror each other as they both have to deal with their perceived lack of talent and withdraw from others as a result. Both events conclude with them having to accept that they aren’t alone and have friends to support them. They both also have a Morality Pet from their unit that acts like a Blue Oni to their Red Oni, and whom they treat more kindly than anyone else. For Ena, it's Kanade, while for Akito, it's Toya. These characters also helped to restore their determination to follow the paths they chose for art and music, respectively. Aoyagi Toya: Akito’s partner. Ena refers to him as Akito’s partner rather than his name (Aibou-kun) because of this. Ena is also one of the few people which Toya calls by the first name, as he refers to her as “Ena-san” likely because she’s the sister of someone he is close to. He occasionally gives Akito the plushies he wins from arcades to pass on to Ena as he plays claw machines mostly for fun rather than the prizes. Ena keeps these plushies in her room and uses them for her selfies to post on her social media account. Akito has told Ena a few things about Toya's food preferences, such as his love for cookies and dislike for squid, which Ena has taken note of. In an area conversation from Let's Enjoy Together! SpoJoy Park, Ena reveals that she was planning to give Toya cookies as a thanks for him giving advice on how to retrieve the PenPyon plushie from the crane game. This interaction was followed up in Akito's Those Wild Cheers side story, where Ena asks Toya how the tea-flavored cookies were. Ena also asks Akito for a reminder about Toya's dislike for squid when she treats Vivid BAD SQUAD to okonomiyaki. Otori Emu: Emu and Ena meet in Paint What I Love ♪ Rainbow Canvas, where Ena visits Emu's house to help Emu and Honami their upcoming job experience assignment where they are required to draw. Upon reaching Emu's house she is shocked by the large gates and fence and compares it to a museum, as she finds out that Emu is the daughter of the Otori group. Kusanagi Nene: Ena meets Nene during the event, What's On Your Mind? Exciting Picnic! when Ena and Airi fell down a slope in the rain and couldn't get back up. Mizuki rushes to find help, running into Rui and Nene who assists in helping Ena and Airi back up. Kamishiro Rui: Mizuki's friend from middle school. Ena meets Rui during the event, What's On Your Mind? Exciting Picnic! when Ena and Airi fell down a slope in the rain and couldn't get back up. Mizuki rushes to find help, running into Rui and Nene who assists in helping Ena and Airi back up. Shinonome Shinei: Ena's father. The two's relationship became strained after he outright told Ena in middle school that she did not have the talent to become an artist. However, it was later specified that he was in fact looking out for Ena, due to being worried Ena would not be able to handle the pain and suffering of not being recognized, but phrased his words too harshly. Their relationship has seen some improvement since then, as Ena was able to understand the reasoning behind his words, but is still a long way from how i used to bet. Before their fallout in middle school, Ena admired her father and was proud to be the daughter of a famous artist, her dream to surpass him one day. When the Shinonome family visited a campground during Ena and Akito's childhood, Ena once pushed her father into the river for leaving her mom, Akito and herself to play while he painted the scenery by himself. In the event Hope Will Someday Go Beyond the Morning, Ena uses her father's fame as a way to convince Mafuyu's mother to let Mafuyu stay overnight at the Shinonome household despite her reluctance in doing so. In the event Knowing the Unseen, after taking up Yukihira's offer to attend her father's solo exhibition as an extracurricular activity, despite the fact it was her father's exhibition, Ena notices that all her father's art has a depressing feeling to it, like he was in pain whilst painting. Ena expresses this to Yukihira, but states that she felt his painting of a peony was different, as it felt like he was almost painting "salvation". Yukihira tells her that her father's career originally suffered badly, as no matter how hard he worked no one was able to understand or acknowledged his art, even considering quitting being an artist after Ena's birth. Unsure whether to really believe it, Ena decides she should talk talk to her father. Upon doing so, he confirms that he did in fact feel like quitting, however the reason behind it was that to him, he had never actually achieved anything as a human being. Ena's birth was like a light in the darkness that was his life, and as he held her in his arms, he knew that he needed to protect her, deciding to paint his last painting. After completing the painting however, he realized that he could never truly give up painting, as he could never live a life without art. Ena is surprised by this, realizing just how much the too have in common, and says to him that she understands now. She tells him that even though she knows she has no have talent, she still wants to become an artist, as she too could never stay away from his art, and no matter how painful it is she will never give up. He father realizes that her mind is fully made up and she is truly determined, and smiles gently at her in acceptance, telling her she can do what she likes.
