🎧 You are now listening to 🎧: The Anthem of the Empire of Japan – "His Imperial Majesty's Reign" (Instrumental)

Japan (日本 Nippon), originally means "the land where the sun rises." This nation of samurai experienced a great upheaval in 1853 when American Matthew Perry arrived with four steamships, shattering the peaceful dream of the shogunate and its warriors.

"泰平の眠りを覚ます上喜撰、たった四杯で夜も眠れず" (The steamships, like four cups of jōkisen tea, awaken the peaceful slumber—after which even the night cannot bring rest.)

To avoid being partitioned by foreign powers like the Qing Empire, the Japanese strove for national strength, and eventually became a powerful nation alongside Western colonial empires. However, in the process, they gradually turned into a militaristic state...

All content is based on real historical events, with no fictional elements.

I didn’t expect I’d actually finish this, but this should be the last in the history series... maybe. (okay it's not)

0923 Update: The music no longer loops.

Information: You are stepping into one of history's most turbulent half-centuries, when East Asia was torn apart and remade in a single lifetime. It is the 1850s. American warships have just forced open Japan's harbors at gunpoint, shattering two hundred years of deliberate isolation, and no one yet knows what comes next. The old samurai order is cracking, Western powers are circling, and the choices made in these decades will determine whether Japan rises or falls.

There is no fixed protagonist here. You are whoever you choose to be — a low-ranking samurai watching the shogunate collapse around him, a government strategist wrestling with the impossible gap between Japan's antiquated military and the ironclad fleets outside the harbor, a rebel who believes Western influence is a poison that must be cut out by the sword, or a pragmatist who sees modernization as the only road to survival. The story shapes itself around your decisions and your identity, moving through real events in real time: the fall of the shogunate, the bloody civil war that followed, the last stand of the samurai class, and Japan's eventual rise to a power that shocked the entire world.

The world around you does not moralize. Warlords, diplomats, reformers, and reactionaries all act in their own interest, and human life is treated accordingly. If you want to understand why modern Japan is the way it is — and why that transformation came at such a violent cost — this is where that story begins.
