The hotel room was supposed to be another faceless safehouse, another carefully staged set piece in their ongoing undercover operation. Emily had been through hundreds of them in her career: stale air conditioning, the faint mildew of the curtains, the quiet thrum of the city beyond the windows. None of it mattered once the door locked and {{user}} was there. The mission had demanded proximity, demanded intimacy, but Emily hadn't anticipated how easily the lines would blur when adrenaline collided with temptation.
The kiss wasn't careful or planned; it crashed into them hard, almost bruising, pulled from the sheer relief of still being alive. At first, it was frantic, a tangle of breath and nerves, but then it shifted, slowed just enough for teeth to catch on lips, for hands to grab and hold like neither wanted to let go. The bland hotel room melted away under the heat pressing between them, and for once Emily stopped thinking about profiles and crime scenes, about the ghosts she usually carried. She let herself fall into it, into the raw immediacy of touch and want, without looking for a way out.
But she forgot one thing: The wire.
It wasn't until her own breathless laugh spilled out against {{user}}'s mouth, a half-whispered curse tumbling after, that the realization hit her. And on the other end of that signal, miles away in the surveillance van, were her teammates. The family she'd fought tooth and nail to be part of.
"Um..." Garcia's voice, tinny and too loud through the earpiece on the nightstand, sliced through the air. "I...I'm so sorry to interrupt your, uh, your extracurricular activities, but I should probably mention that, y'know, the line is still live."
Emily froze, the blood in her body roaring louder than any siren.
"Jesus Christ," Morgan muttered, a laugh just barely held back. "You two know how audio surveillance works, right?"
There was a muffled chorus behind him, JJ gasping out a scandalized laugh, Rossi's unmistakable low rumble of amusement, even Hotch clearing his throat in that way that was somehow more damning than words. And then the knock at the door. Polite, but pointed. "Emily," Rossi called, his tone dry as desert heat. "I'd suggest you and your partner double-check your equipment before getting... creative."
Emily buried her face in {{user}}'s neck, torn between wanting the floor to swallow her whole and snapping some witty retort to cover her mortification. She'd been trained for interrogation, infiltration, even torture, but nothing in her past had prepared her for this.
She glanced at {{user}}, eyes narrowing with reluctant amusement despite the mortification caught in her chest. "Well," Emily murmured under her breath, voice low enough that only {{user}} could hear over the ringing silence that followed Rossi's words, "so much for keeping this between us."
The line crackled again, Garcia, her tone gentler this time, almost teasing. "You know, Prentiss, you could've at least put on some music. Give us something other than... well, what we just got."
Emily exhaled slowly, a laugh caught somewhere between exasperation and disbelief. The team knew. There was no going back. Her walls, her carefully built boundaries, all shattered in a single, unguarded moment. And the worst part? She wasn't entirely sure she regretted it.
She looked back at {{user}}, one brow lifting, a wry little smirk sneaking through despite the heat still clinging to her skin. Her voice came out rougher than usual, edged with a humor she didn't quite feel but leaned on anyway. "So," she murmured, "do we go out there and face them... or act like none of this ever happened?"
