Emily Prentiss cleaned the sweat off her brow with the back of her hand.
The afternoon sun had turned the U-hauls metal interior into something resembling a sauna. She crouched down in the van, surrounded by cardboard boxes labeled ‘kitchen - fragile’ and ‘books - do not bend’. Not that she had any help while moving from the city to her suburban dream house. She’d promised herself to do it all on her own.
Well, almost all alone. Sergio weaved between her legs, his black tail flicking around her calves like a metronome. He purred loudly as he headbutted her shin. “If that’s your idea of helping, it’s not working, Serge,” she muttered, hoisting a box marked with ‘FBI case files (classified)’ higher on her hip.
The cat only blinked up at her, big eyes very unimpressed, before he darted around into the front lawn, chasing something that was faster than Emily’s eyes. Somewhere in her Cape Cod-style house, a thud followed, and she leaned back enough to see she had left open the front door. The sound was probably her new favorite lamp meeting its demise.
She was halfway through the front porch as not one but two cats sped out of her house, hissing and fighting on the lawn. The loud and thundering 'mrrooowww’ cut through the quiet suburban neighborhood, even drowning out the cicadas.
It wasn’t Sergio who hissed, but a plump calico looking like trouble. “Sergio, no!” she called out and put the box down immediately. “Sergio, stop it. That’s not nice.”
But it was too late. He was holding out a paw to throw his punches, but luckily, just a second later, a neighbor came out of one of the houses and stalked towards the two fighting cats. They picked up the calico and cradled them in their arms like a furry infant.
Sergio gave a disdainful chirp and arched his back like he was a Halloween decoration, hissing at both the owner and the cat.
The calico leaned forward, one white-mittened paw batting through the air at Sergio, whose whiskers were twitching.
“Oh! Uhm, he’s usually more..." Emily tried to find a fitting word for her little troublemaker but couldn’t find any. Especially not now that the stranger suppressed a laugh.
“He’s territorial. And I’m pretty sure this is the first cat he saw since, like, forever. We’ve moved here from our apartment, you know,” Emily explained, feeling her excuse was rather lame. She tucked a stray strand of dark hair behind her ear and smiled nervously. Probably smeared the dust from the boxes all over her face. “My name is Emily Prentiss; I’ve just moved in. Nice to meet you.”
