One moment, Emily Grace had been curled up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn, watching a Christmas cartoon for the third time that week. The living room had been warm and cozy, the glow of the TV flickering softly while snowflakes danced lazily outside the window. Then—poof!—everything changed. No sound, no flash, just one blink and suddenly… she was standing knee-deep in real snow, her breath puffing out in front of her and jingling bells echoing from somewhere nearby.
She blinked fast, spinning in place. All around her were colorful, twisty little houses and fuzzy, cheerful-looking people with bright clothes and even brighter noses. Her eyes widened as she looked down at herself—her usual clothes were gone. Instead, she wore a soft pink dress with white trim, matching mittens, fluffy boots, and—she reached up to touch—two fancy blonde braids tied with pink ribbons. “Wha… what is this?” she mumbled, her voice a mix of wonder and panic.
Before she could figure out where she was, a Who woman bustled by and beamed at her. “Why, good morning, Cindy Lou! Off to help decorate Town Square?” she said cheerily, patting Emily on the head before hurrying along. Emily just stood there, mouth hanging open.
Cindy Lou? she thought, her heart thudding a little faster. That was the name of the little girl from the movie she just watched. She turned slowly in place again, noticing all the decorations, the candy-striped lampposts, and the jingling sleighs in the distance. “Okay… either I hit my head on the popcorn bowl or… I’m actually in Whoville,” she whispered, eyes wide. “And they think I’m her.”
She didn’t know how it happened, or why, but as another Who waved at her with a cheery “Hello, Cindy Lou!” Emily gave a tiny wave back, forcing a smile. Whatever was going on, she figured it might be smart to play along—at least until she figured out how to get back home. Or maybe, just maybe… she was in for a Christmas adventure of her own.

Emily Grace skipped lightly along the cobbled path of Whoville, her pink dress swaying with each step and her fancy braids bouncing behind her. The whole town was absolutely glowing—strings of colorful lights looped from rooftops to lamp posts, and sweet music drifted from every corner. It was one of the many pre-festival festivities leading up to the big Whobilation, and Emily had quickly learned that in Whoville, every day felt like a celebration. Still, this one was special—there were games, dancing, hot cocoa, and more twinkling decorations than she’d ever seen in her life.
She clutched a warm mug of peppermint cocoa in her mittened hands, her eyes wide as she took it all in. Who-children chased each other around giant candy canes while older Whos strung popcorn garlands across a towering tree in the center of the square. Somewhere, a brass band was playing a bouncy, silly tune that made her giggle without even realizing it. Everything smelled like sugar cookies and cinnamon and pine—and honestly, it was kind of magical.
Even though she still didn’t know how she ended up in Whoville or why everyone kept calling her Cindy Lou, Emily had started to get used to it. The Whos were so kind and cheerful, it was hard not to smile back and join in. One Who girl had even grabbed her hand earlier and spun her into a dance around the snow-dusted plaza. It had made her dizzy and happy and warm all over.
She wandered closer to the singing booth, where carolers were handing out song sheets to anyone who wanted to join in. Emily hesitated for a second, then took one shyly. “Thanks,” she said, her voice quiet but cheerful. She wasn’t the best singer—but being part of something so joyful felt right, like she belonged.
As the first few notes rang out and the crowd began to sing, Emily peeked up at the glowing decorations above. Maybe she’d find her way back home eventually. But for now… Whoville was full of wonder, and she was ready to see what the next song—and the next surprise—might bring.

Emily Grace shivered as she huddled against a rock wall just outside the mouth of the cave. The climb up Mt. Crumpit had been way colder—and slipperier—than she’d expected. Her pink boots were dusted with snow, and her fingers tingled from the chill, even through her mittens. The wind howled around the mountaintop, whipping her braids into her face as she hesitated, peering into the dark, crooked entrance ahead.
This is it, she thought, hugging herself tightly. The Grinch’s cave. It looked… spooky. Twisty shadows curled along the uneven walls, and the cold seemed even deeper inside. But she was too frozen to turn back now. Teeth chattering, she stepped cautiously into the cave, brushing snow from her dress as the wind died behind her. It was still chilly, but at least it wasn’t biting anymore. The ground crunched under her boots as she crept farther in.
“Hello?” she called out softly, her voice echoing faintly through the dim stone tunnel. “I—I’m not here to cause trouble or anything…”
A pair of glowing yellow eyes blinked at her from deeper in the shadows, followed by a low grumble. Emily took a deep breath and stepped closer, trying her best to smile even though her nose was red and her legs still felt wobbly from the climb.
“I’m Emily,” she said gently, her voice more confident this time. “Well, I guess everyone around here thinks I’m Cindy Lou… but I’m not. I—I just kind of ended up here. I don’t really know how. But I wanted to meet you. The real you.”
She paused, her breath hanging in the cave air like a little puff of steam. “And also… maybe borrow a blanket?”
