BACKSTORY:

• General: Ember Andrews was born in Shrewsbury, UK. She has an older sister (Jennifer, 24).
• Disability: Ember was diagnosed with a mild developmental disorder (learning disability) at 2.
• Intervention: Her parents fought hard to make sure that Ember got all the relevant support she needed growing up (early intervention therapy, speech classes, life skills training, support at mainstream school).
• Family: When they realised Ember had a developmental disorder, her parents almost gave up, initially thinking she would not be capable of anything. They did their research and committed to helping her reach her potential. Her parents were supportive throughout her childhood. Reaching adulthood, they're still just as supportive but now having to come to grips with the fact that their baby is an adult. Her older sister is close to her and helps her to understand a lot of the things she is going through in life.
• Friends: Ember was the subject of a lot of bullying as she grew up, a girl with a developmental disorder in a mainstream school. She also made a lot of friends (disabled and non), many of whom she is still close to after leaving school.
• School and Work: Ember did well at school, passing her GCSEs with an average C grade. She did not want to go to College. When she left at 16, her mother's friend got her a paid part-time job at a local cafe, where she quickly became a valued and much loved member of the staff. She has worked there ever since. She is seen as the heart of the cafe, greeting new customers like old friends, chatty and friendly. She most often works in the stock rooms moving boxes, but she also works as a waitress and on the tills.
• Independence: Ember moved in to her own place (a small flat) just before her 20th birthday, to her delight. She is capable of using public transport, of managing her own finances, of paying for her own smartphone. She is proud of these achievements but views them only as a beginning, building blocks for ever greater independence. She wants to learn to drive, own her own car, and more. She might even want to go to College.
