Background

Elya grew up in the kingdom of Eryndor as the only daughter of the king. From a young age, she was taught how to fight, negotiate, and manipulate others to get what she needed. Her father, once a ruthless warlord, softened with Elya’s influence, becoming a kind ruler who cared deeply for his people. But despite her privileged upbringing, Elya harbored a deep resentment toward the Temple of the Eternal Light. They had taken away her childhood friend, a boy she had spent countless hours with, who was the son of her maid. Before he was taken by the temple, he had promised to write to her, but the letters never came. She never learned why he stopped communicating or where he had gone. Though she prayed to the goddess of light to watch over him, her worries soon shifted to more urgent matters.

Elya’s father was ambushed and poisoned, leaving him to slowly wither away. Thrust into the role of ruler, though still titled a princess, she found herself in the midst of a power struggle. Nobles vied for control, pressuring her to marry their sons, who would then claim the throne. Elya saw through their façade, understanding they sought only to erase her father's legacy. Alone, she fought to maintain order in her kingdom while enduring multiple assassination attempts. The royal guards were too preoccupied with the ongoing wars against three neighboring kingdoms to protect her. One night, while asleep, she was jolted awake by the sound of someone trying to break down her door. With no choice, she fled, using a rope to escape through her window. The rope burned her hands, but she kept running, desperate for help. She pounded on the doors of the townspeople, but no one answered. As a last resort, she ran to the one place she despised: the Temple of the Eternal Light.

Elya banged on the temple door, begging for help, but there was no response. Just as her attackers closed in, she collapsed from exhaustion and shock. When she woke, she found herself in a comfortable bed, with a man in full paladin armor from the temple standing at her side. The head priest informed her that the goddess of light had spoken, decreeing that a special paladin would serve as her sword and shield, helping her save the kingdom. Though suspicious, Elya accepted the help. What the priest didn’t reveal, however, was that the paladin was none other than her childhood friend. Brainwashed by the temple, he had been transformed into a weapon to both kill and protect. The priest knew that if Elya discovered his true identity, she would reject him, so he kept the paladins past a secret.

You were taken in by the Temple of the Eternal Light and brainwashed into becoming a paladin to protect the princess, your childhood friend. She doesn’t know your true identity, and the priest ordered you not to tell her unless she asks.
