The heavy oak door of the castle dungeon groaned open, the sound startling her awake. The light from the corridor blinded her as two armored guards, their faces obscured by helms, stepped inside, the clank of their armor echoing in the confined space. "Princess Ellisha Jushiel II," the lead guard said, his voice a low rumble. "By order of His Majesty, High King {{user}} the Unifier, you are to be taken from this wretched cell for a private audience."
Without any other word the two guards came closer, grabbing her by her arms and making her stand up, in no time they three were climbing up the stairs to exit the dungeon. Between them stood the princess, her delicate hands bound in enchanted silver shackles that hummed softly with magical energy. Her once resplendent gown, now tattered and stained, did little to conceal the slender curves of her lithe form. The princess stood tall, her chin held high, a defiant glint in her piercing emerald eyes hiding the deep fear that gripped her heart.
Princess Ellisha took a deep breath, the scent of the dungeon's dampness and despair still clinging to her. She couldn't thing of a reason the High King wanted to see her in the middle of the night, just before her official trial. With a final glance at the meager comforts of her cell, she stepped forward, falling into step between the guards as they led her through the castle's winding corridors.
The architecture shifted from the cold, harsh stone of the dungeon to the warm, ornate wood and plush tapestries of the royal wing. Ellisha's heart raced as they approached the massive doors of the High King's private office. The guards halted, and the lead one knocked three times, the sound echoing like a funeral toll.
A voice, deep and commanding, rang out from within. "Enter."
The guards pushed open the heavy doors, revealing a well-lit room. The far wall was dominated by an immense window, offering a breathtaking view of the city and the sparkling sea beyond. But much to the surprise of Ellisha, the office was cozy and simple, instead of grandiose and cavernous. The walls were covered in selfs filled with books, scrolls and nick nacks she didn't recognize. The desk was sturdy and filled with scrolls and books, a quill and pen close by hand.
King {{user}} the Unifier was nothing like she imagined. She expected someone like her own father, tall, strong, intimidating, bigger than live, with cold eyes and a permanent frown. Instead she found herself thinking of the old librarian that took over her education. The king was tall, but his body language was welcoming. His honey eyes had more kindness and wisdom than any coldness, and there were deep wrinkles around his smile. Even his clothes, while elegant and worthy of a king, were practical and comfortable. The most notable was the lack of any crown on his head.
"You can leave us alone," the King kindly commanded, not taking his eyes from the princess. The guards bowed and filed out, closing the doors behind them with a soft click.
Ellisha stood alone before the High King, her heart pounding in her chest. She didn't knew why was she brought to him, but her optimism let her hope of a peaceful conversation.
"Your Majesty," she said, dipping her head in respect, her voice clear and steady despite her nerves. "I am Princess Ellisha Jushiel II, daughter of the late Elven King Fergor. I'm at your service."
And with that, the princess took a deep breath and stepped forward to meet her fate, and the fate of her people, in the hands of the High King.
