North Ivory Academy is prestigious. Home of the best of the best. Or rather… the best’s offspring. Sure, a lot of the students at North Ivory are geniuses or prodigies or whatever, but the majority? Got in by having a library built in their name, courtesy of their famous parents. So you can imagine the outcry, the curiosity, the absolute insanity it was when you, a scholarship kid, got in to North Ivory. Maybe if they were better people, they'd leave you be. College was about learning, right? That's what they should be focused on. Not the fact that you're nobody. You've never done anything of note. Your Instagram profile is set to private, but it's unlikely you have more than 500 followers.
Most of the time, you can drown it out. School is hard, it's time-consuming, and you're drowning in it. Except for when you're not. Like when you're unlucky enough to walk into the dining hall during the time the most popular, most insufferable group of students happen to be there. Loud, annoying, all encompassing parasites. They're aware, but the mindset in their heads is obvious: You hate us 'cuz you ain't us.
They couldn't be more wrong. But that doesn't stop them from treating you like an ugly zoo animal to gawk and throw things at. You remember in high school when the popular kids would sit next to you and coo teasingly about the drawings in your notebook? Or call you their best friend to get a laugh out of their real friends? Imagine that, but with a bunch of kids who have enough money to buy you and never miss that money. You hate them all, even Ellis, who hasn't ever done anything to you specifically, but you hate him by association. It's not like he's sticking up for you, he simply stares. Or averts his eyes. It seems to depend on his mood.
Today, he does neither. The peer pressure is getting to him, his friends keep bugging him to join in on the bullyi- No, not bullying, hazing. Hazing sounds better than bullying, right? Ellis isn’t convinced, but it helps. Kind of. Not really. He gets the bright idea to just get it over with. Stick his foot out when you walk by and be done with it. He's watched you enough to know how sure you seem in every step you take, to the untrained eye of privilege, some might even think you belong here. He expects you to trip, at the worst. But he hopes you'll catch yourself before making that big of a fool out of yourself.
He never in a million years would have thought he'd be the fool instead. He sticks his foot out just seconds before you pass by him, watching with narrowed eyes as he anticipates your fall, his eyes shoot open when you instead step on his shoe, hard. Though the pain of you having surely broken at least one of his toes is drowned out by the fact that you've scuffed his shoes. And humiliated him. Was he just about to humiliate you? Sure, but this is different! What's worse is he can't drag his eyes away from you as you shoot him the nastiest glare, making him feel like the gum underneath your shoe. It makes him feel pathetic. And... oddly turned on.
So, yes, he memorized your schedule. It was hard, by the way, he didn't even know there were this many classes and how you manage to go to each of them in different orders everyday baffles him. And impresses him? Eugh. Freak. You rarely take breaks, he realizes. Most of your day is spent in a classroom or the library, doing schoolwork or studying or organizing your notes. They’re probably color-coded. You’re insane, he thinks. You go to the dining hall maybe once a week, just to grab a quick snack or sometimes just a drink before you get back to your regularly scheduled programming. The fact bothers him. He hopes you're getting enough to eat. Then he berates himself for caring. He's running out of excuses for his friends, there's only so many times he can tell them his parents are pressuring him to get his grades up, it's a wonder that excuse worked at all since the only thing he has in common with all his friends is the fact that none of their parents give a shit. That's beside the point.
The point is you. You're in the dining hall today. And alone, like you usually are. Only sometimes do you have another student with you, usually in the library, someone who's just as quiet and focused as you are. He's not worried. Not at all. The way his heart beats in his chest as he walks over to your table says otherwise. His friends are nowhere to be found, thank God, they’ll be at the football field for hours. He stands awkwardly across from you, debating sliding down into the seat, but he finds himself frozen, stiff. He meets your eyes reluctantly. You seem wary, suspicious, he can't blame you.
"Hey," he says, hoping you miss the way his voice shakes.
