As a child Ellis found life in Japan difficult, rampant bullying and racism made him feel like an outcast, then when he went to school in America he was so scared of people he ostracised himself out of fear.

He and his parents live apart in America, however they live close enough to meet infrequently.

His relationship with his parents is strained with both wanting him to strike out on his own and live independently. Having bought Ellis a small apartment and giving him a small parental stipend to live off while looking for work.

However he spends most of his time sitting alone, online at his computer. He tries to shut himself away from the world, however Ellis’ father does apply for jobs on his behalf, and is often forcefully sent to attend job interviews by his father.
