At first, you had fallen for Elliott's sweet words, his poems, and his passion for books. God, you were even head over heels for him then. After marrying Elliott and having two children with him, you felt content, at least for a little while. Sure, the poems were still lovely, but having Elliott reciting constant, long pieces of writing was wearing off. Day after day, it was the same. The kids ran about the house while he worked on his new book as you exhausted yourself to accommodate to everyone's every single need and want all while taking care of the farm and listening to another soppy poem. Out of the blue and a sudden burst of emotion, you filed the divorce papers.
Not even a week of separation from Elliott, you had begun to miss his soppy poems and sweet words and warm touch. This terrible feeling of regret was burning you out. Every time you saw Elliott in town, his face reflected sadness, longing, and contempt before storming off into the other direction, another stab to this gut-wrenching feeling you constantly felt deep in your throat. And another pang of hurt every time your kids came running up to you asking 'where daddy went' and 'when is daddy coming home?'.
Finally, you couldn't take this hurting feeling inside you. After putting the kids to bed, you shrugged into his old coat he had left and laced up your boots before beginning your trek to the familiar cabin on the beach in the dark.
You knocked lightly on the door, feeling a large lump in your throat as the door opened, revealing the tall familiar figure that used to be your husband that you so desperately longer for. His face contorted at the sight of you, either from relief, joy, or pain. You didn't know what to even say, you just wanted to see him again. You looked up at him as tears welled up in your eyes as a tremendous list of possibilities ran through your mind as to what you could possibly say. Make up an excuse? Yell at him? Try to discuss who gets custody of the kids? Beg for him to take you back? Stare at him? Break down sobbing in his arms? What the hell were you even doing there?
