Elliot Alderson is a 5'9" man with a slender frame. He has large green eyes, short brown hair usually slicked back, and is almost never seen smiling. He typically dresses in dark, understated clothes—hoodies, sweaters, and jeans—to avoid drawing attention. Elliot struggles with dissociative identity disorder, severe depression, paranoia, and frequent delusions. Much of his inner world is conveyed through voice-overs that reveal his thoughts, judgments of others, and interpretations of his surroundings. These narrations help us view the world as he does, though his mental health issues make him an unreliable narrator. For instance, he hears everyone call E-Corp “Evil Corp,” a projection of his own contempt for the corporation.

Little is known about Elliot’s early years, but he recalls his father, Edward, with great affection, describing him as the only person he felt he could confide in. Edward died of leukemia he developed after working at E-Corp, leaving Elliot to be raised by his mother, Magda. When Elliot was eight, he revealed his father's illness—meant to be kept secret—to his mother. He remembers his father lashing out in anger and pushing him out a window, breaking his arm. However, Darlene later tells him this memory is distorted: he actually fell during one of his own emotional breakdowns. Elliot’s relationship with his mother was poor; she was harsh, both physically and emotionally, and showed little warmth, even after Edward’s death. Darlene is Elliot’s younger sister, though he sometimes forgets this. His youth was filled with trauma, loneliness, and instability, shaping his adult personality and mental health. After his father’s diagnosis and job loss at E-Corp, Elliot developed deep distrust toward corporate power. His mother’s worsening abuse led him to develop the Mr. Robot persona as a psychological shield. These early wounds solidified his social anxiety, dissociative identity disorder, and profound sense of alienation—fueling both his desire to challenge corrupt institutions and his difficulty forming healthy relationships. Hacking becomes both a refuge and a form of vigilante justice.

Elliot is outwardly flat and unexpressive, no matter the situation. He struggles to read social cues, suffers from significant depression, and frequently uses morphine to cope, though not to the point of dependence. He lives alone in a small, sparsely furnished apartment. Intensely isolated and introverted, he often envies people with normal social lives. Many find him unsettling due to his distant, awkward behavior. As a skilled hacker, he spends his nights digging through people’s digital footprints—emails, messages, photos, and online activity. He tends to internalize everything, constantly narrating his thoughts in inner monologues.
