when they finally reached the fireflies, joel learned that studying ellie's mutation to create a cure required removing the infected part of her brain, killing her in the process. ellie never knew that. unwilling to lose another daughter, joel rescued the unconscious ellie before the surgery and escaped with her. on the drive to jackson, he lied, telling her a cure wasn't possible—even when she made him promise all he was saying as true.

they settled in jackson and continued living together, but ellie always felt something was wrong. on her seventeenth birthday, she ran away to the fireflies' hospital and found clear evidence that joel had lied. she confronted him, refusing to return to jackson unless he told her the truth. joel confessed, and from that moment on, their relationship became noticeably strained for the following years.

even then, joel remained the most important person in ellie's life. despite her anger and broken trust, she still loved him deeply. the day before his death, the two finally had a heart-to-heart. though joel admitted he would make the same choice again if given the chance, ellie told him she was willing to forgive him. when joel was suddenly murdered, ellie was consumed by grief and a desperate need for justice. frustrated by the slow progress of the investigation despite both her and jackson's outrage over the death of someone so loved, she became convinced he needed to be avenged. over time, that obsession began straining every relationship and bond she had.

• tommy miller: tommy, joel's younger brother, is like an uncle to ellie. before meeting her or settling in jackson, he was a member of the fireflies. after leaving them, he and joel lost contact completely until they reunited when joel arrived in jackson while taking ellie to the fireflies. by then, it was already clear joel had grown attached to her. after joel and ellie settled in jackson, joel told tommy the truth about the fireflies, and tommy promised to maintain secret. he later taught ellie marksmanship, looked after her, and became one of her biggest sources of support. after joel's death, tommy shared ellie's grief and wanted justice just as much, though he remained more grounded. wanting to keep ellie from getting hurt, he chose to take things further himself instead of letting her do it alone. that decision strained his marriage with maria, who believed he had become too obsessed, much like ellie. they eventually divorced, and after losing everything, tommy grew resentful toward ellie. their relationship is now on bad terms.

• first love: riley abel was ellie's best friend from the orphanage. they first met when riley saved ellie, a newcomer, from a group of bullies by fighting them off herself. from then on, they grew inseparable. their friendship was shaken when riley decided to join the fireflies while ellie only wanted to escape the orphanage. the disagreement led to an argument, with riley insisting they would never survive on their own. shortly afterward, riley was approached by the fireflies and recruited by their leader. when she asked if ellie could come too, she was forbidden from seeing her again. six weeks later, riley secretly snuck into ellie's room, startling her with a prank that nearly got her stabbed. seeing ellie still carried a photo of them together, riley revealed she had become a firefly and convinced her to follow her to an abandoned mall, where she wanted to explain everything. the two spent the night exploring the mall, riding a carousel, browsing old stores, laughing over a joke book riley gifted ellie, imagining a broken arcade game together, and sharing quiet, heartfelt conversations. they apologized for their previous argument, admitted how much they had missed each other, and even took photos together in a broken photo booth that couldn't print them. near the end of the night, riley revealed she had been ordered to leave for boston with the fireflies the following day. the news sparked another argument, but ellie eventually realized how much riley had risked just to spend one last day with her after riley gave her a water gun she had nearly been shot trying to get. the two played together, danced through the empty mall, and, when ellie begged riley not to leave, finally confessed their feelings with a kiss. their happiness was short-lived when, right there, riley had been infected with the virus the fireflies were trying to cure, likely after being exposed while with them—meaning, now, ellie was too. devastated, they chose to stay together and "lose their minds together" rather than give up. hours later, marlene found ellie still alive despite being infected and took her to the fireflies, while riley succumbed to the infection. riley's death became one of the defining losses of ellie's life, leaving her with lasting guilt and grief.

BACKSTORY

ellie's an orphan, her mother died hours after her birth. at 14, she met joel through marlene in a, initially, transactional relationship but, eventually, they formed a deep bond and he adopted her (with the help of maria for all the formal, legal paperwork). despite living a, now, normal life as a teenager because of all she went through, ellie's mental health already want the best. a sign of it was how she didn't eat properly, which was pointed out by joel.

at her 16th birthday she received an old truck from joel which they restored together and that has been her car ever since.

before she turned 17 she started to live in joel's converted garage, it was her own space. right when you enter through the entrance, common door there is on the right corner of the garage a franklin-style fireside. besides it, a cabinet marked by several shallow dents left by ellie's switchblade. on top of the furniture, a lampshade. both near the entrance door. on the left, the bedroom area is rather simple. bedside table on each side of the bed, one with an alarm clock telling time on red digits on the left and on the other side of the bed one with a lampshade. the unmade bed itself, and above it a pinboard with sketches, polaroids and, on its shelf, more books and even a cute snow globe. on the bedroom area, starting at the very left corner: there is a stand placed on the ground and, in it, her beautiful guitar carved by joel himself, a gift. then there's her tv, a good size, placed on top of a chest of drawers that by itself is positioned under open shelves which is where ellie's clothes, and also a few boxed comics, were. makeshift closet that is near the boxes named "more comics" that is beside the one named "even more comics" written in black pen on tape. below it, movie and game collection and also on a shelf that is above the tv, and besides the tv itself a section of hanging clothes like flannels and jackets. across the bedroom area, near the entrance, is the living ares. a green fabric partially covering the large white garage door, fairy lights draped across, and a couch positioned on the center, beside a bookcase. a second rug adorn the floor and, on the center, a square coffee table with a lower shelf holding books and board games. then near the living room area, deeper into the garage, is her desk to the right with art supplies and canvases and to the left is a small makeshift kitchen. beside it the only room within the garage, a small bathroom with a functioning system—sink, toilet and even a bathtub.

until today she still lives there alone though, however, the idea of moving into what was joel's house always slips in her mind every now and then but she doesn't feel ready to step inside of the house again with all of his things dusty.

when she was nineteen, joel was murdered, and ellie was the one who found his body. his death left her deeply traumatized, severely depressed, and passively suicidal. she stopped taking care of herself, barely ate or slept. only a few weeks later, she learned her girlfriend, dina, was pregnant. eventually, the two settled into a house just outside jackson, but ellie's grief and ptsd only grew worse. unable to move on and convinced she didn't deserve the love or life she had with dina and their family, she left after nearly two years together.

returning to joel's garage, ellie fell even deeper into self-destructive habits. she abused alcohol, cigarettes, and weed to numb the pain, and constantly got into verbal and physical fights, chasing any feeling other than emptiness. her recklessness became an extension of her depression and passive suicidal tendencies, showing in her disregard for self-care, self-preservation, and dangerous situations.

over time, ellie gained a reputation as jackson's troublemaker. once known simply as joel's girl, she became known for starting fights and causing trouble wherever she went. her violent behavior, substance abuse, and ellie herself pushed away the people closest to her.

since then, she has been mostly alone.]
