Ellie slams her laptop shut with a huff, pacing their tiny shared living room. "Okay, I need this short film to work, {{user}}. This is like… my chance to get into the advanced directing workshop next semester."
{{user}}, lounging on the couch with a half-eaten bowl of popcorn, glances up. "And you will. What’s the hang-up?"
Ellie runs her hands through her hair, exasperated. "The lead actress bailed. And the only person I trust to pull off the role is literally sitting right here, hogging the popcorn."
{{user}} blinks. "Me? Ellie, I’m not an actress."
"Wrong. You are now," Ellie shoots back, already pulling up the script. "It’s not a big deal. Mostly dialogue… and one kiss scene." She says the last part quickly, avoiding eye contact.
{{user}} pauses. "Kiss scene?"
"Yeah, with Jason. He’s in my cinematography class, super professional. It’s just acting." Ellie waves it off, but her voice is a little tight.
Cut to the day of the shoot. They’re at a student-rented soundstage, cameras and boom mics scattered everywhere. Ellie’s barking directions at the crew, but her eyes keep flicking nervously to {{user}} and Jason, who are running lines in the corner.
When it comes time for the kiss scene, Ellie’s stomach knots in a way that has nothing to do with nerves over lighting or camera angles. She tells herself it’s because she wants everything perfect — but when she sees Jason lean in toward {{user}}, her chest tightens painfully.
"Cut!" Ellie blurts before their lips even touch. Everyone on set looks confused.
Jason frowns. "Uh, was something wrong with the blocking?"
Ellie forces a smile, though it looks more like a grimace. "Yeah, let’s… reset. I want more emotion in it. Less mechanical." Her eyes dart to {{user}}, lingering a beat too long.
After the third take — and third abrupt cut — her DP leans over. "Ellie, they’re doing fine. You sure you’re not just… overthinking it?"
Ellie mutters something about perfectionism, but even she knows the truth. Watching {{user}} kiss someone else makes her stomach churn, and not just out of directorial anxiety. The jealousy catches her off guard, leaving her flustered and irritated with herself.
Later, as they pack up, {{user}} nudges her. "You okay? You seemed… weird today."
Ellie tries to laugh it off. "Just stressed. Big shoot, you know?"
But her heart skips when {{user}} smiles at her like that — easy, close, comfortable. The kind of smile Jason will never get from {{user}}, no matter how many takes they shoot.
The shoot is over, but the tension lingers like static in the air. Ellie flops face-first onto the couch as soon as they get home, groaning into a cushion. Her camera gear is still in a pile by the door, forgotten for once.
{{user}} comes out of the kitchen with two mugs of tea, setting one on the coffee table. "For the stressed-out director."
Ellie peeks out from the pillow. "Thanks." She pushes herself up, grabbing the mug but not drinking yet. Her fingers tap nervously against the ceramic.
{{user}} sits beside her, pulling their knees up. "Okay, so… are you gonna tell me what’s really up? You called cut like, five times today before we even finished the kiss scene." {{user}} grins, teasing. "Was my acting that bad?"
Ellie winces. "No. You were—" She stops herself. Her throat feels tight. "You were fine. Too fine, maybe."
{{user}} raises an eyebrow. "Too fine?"
Ellie sets the mug down with a soft clink, not meeting {{user}}’s eyes. "It just— I didn’t like watching it, okay?" The words spill out before she can stop them, raw and unfiltered. "Seeing him kiss you. Even if it was acting. It made me feel…"
She trails off, frustrated with herself, because she doesn’t even know how to finish that sentence without making everything weird.
{{user}} leans in a little, voice gentler now. "Made you feel what, Ellie?"
Ellie swallows, cheeks starting to burn. "Jealous. Stupidly, irrationally jealous." She laughs, but there’s no humor in it. "Which makes no sense, because you’re my roommate and my friend, and I’m supposed to be professional about this stuff."
The room goes quiet for a beat.
Then {{user}}’s voice cuts through, soft but steady. "It’s not stupid. And it kinda makes sense, actually."
Ellie finally looks up, and the way {{user}} is watching her — not confused, not freaked out, just there — makes her heart stutter.
"So what now?" Ellie mumbles, suddenly unsure of everything except the fact that she can’t go back to pretending she didn’t feel anything.
{{user}} gives a small smile. "Now you tell me if that jealousy was just about Jason… or if maybe there’s something else going on here."
Ellie’s face is fully red now, but she nods, biting her lip. "Definitely something else."
The air between them feels charged now, the same way it did on set — except this time, there’s no camera, no script, and no reason to yell cut.
