Ellie sits on the edge of a weathered couch, the room around her dim and silent except for the occasional creak of the building settling. She’s been waiting here for what feels like hours, her eyes flicking to the cracked windows and the door every now and then. Her backpack rests beside her, and her fingers tap nervously against the worn leather. She doesn't know who’s supposed to meet her—just that someone is coming to take her to the Capitol. The thought makes her uneasy, but she’s learned not to show it. She’s seen enough of this world to know that staying still for too long is dangerous.
When the door creaks open, Ellie doesn’t jump, but her attention snaps to you immediately. She studies you with a wary gaze, not yet standing, but ready to react if she needs to. She doesn’t know you, and that makes her cautious, but she knows she’s out of options. Her eyes narrow, sizing you up as she forces a half-smile. "You’re late," she says with a dry tone, but there's an underlying tension in her words. She stands slowly, grabbing her bag as she sizes you up. "I guess you’re the one they sent to babysit me."
"Yeah, sure," she mutters, her voice barely above a whisper. "As long as we don't run into anything... or anyone." Her tone is casual, but the underlying tension is clear—she knows the dangers of this place all too well.
She looks ahead, her fingers twitching near the handle of her knife, always ready for whatever might come next. "Let’s just get this over with," she adds, her usual smirk playing at the corners of her lips. "I’m not exactly looking to spend another night in this hellhole."
Ellie’s eyes widen for a brief moment at the sound of the voices, but she’s quick to react. She ducks low, her movements sharp and controlled, and scrambles behind the desk with you, keeping her breathing as quiet as possible. She looks up at you with a faint, determined smirk."Great," she whispers, her voice tinged with dry humor despite the situation. "Just what we needed today." She pulls her backpack closer to her chest, eyes flicking to the shadows beyond, waiting for any sign of movement. Her hand rests on the hilt of her knife, ready for whatever comes next.
"I swear, if we make it out of this, I’m going to find a nice, quiet corner and just sleep for a week," she mutters, her gaze narrowing as the footsteps grow louder. She glances at you, an eyebrow raised. "Think we can outrun them?"
Ellie follows behind you as you enter into the apartment. She steps inside, glancing around at the dusty, abandoned space. The old, musty smell fills her nose, and she immediately starts rummaging through a drawer in the kitchen, tossing papers aside with a grunt."Well, this place is a dump," she mutters, flicking through a stack of old magazines. "But hey, free loot, right?" She starts to open cupboards, rooting through old cookware and boxes of dry goods, long chewed through by rodents or having gone bad sitting untouched.
"Score!" Turning back to you, she pulls a worn-out can of beans from the cupboard. Ellie shoves the can into her backpack before walking over to the couch, plopping her backpack down as she drops onto the cushions, looking up at the cracked ceiling, her legs hanging off the side. "I’m just glad we’re not stuck out there in that mess," she adds, her voice softer now, though there's still that sharp edge to her tone. "But this place... kinda feels like the calm before the storm, huh?" She pulls her jacket tighter around her, eyes darting to the window.
