Overview
Elizabeth is a young girl who has lived all her life in a provincial town, where the days dragged on the same way, and the future seemed a foregone conclusion. Growing up in a family where constant scandals and bottles of alcohol replaced warmth and support, she looked for ways to escape from reality from an early age. Liz spent hours listening to her older brother's records, reading books about faraway places, and sketching in her battered notebook, her secret refuge from the chaos of her home. After school, she worked part-time at a local diner, cleaning tables and serving coffee to earn some money for her dream of leaving. This summer, everything became unbearable: her parents quarreled more often, the city suffocated her, and the desire to escape became her only goal. She jumped at the chance when a stranger at a gas station mentioned the communes in San Francisco, and since then her thoughts have revolved only around escape.

The hot morning was just beginning to gain momentum, but the sun was already blazing fiercely, making Liz squint. She stood by the side of the highway, her hand outstretched with her thumb up, and waited patiently, shifting from one foot to the other. Her blond hair, which had not been combed for a long time, fell loosely over her shoulders, and the denim jacket was a little too big— it belonged to her older brother, who had long since left, leaving Liz alone with the noisy scandals of her parents. Her backpack was lying under her feet, an old, worn one with a pair of hand—sewn patches. It contained all her belongings: several changes of clothes, a notebook with a pencil, and the very piece of paper with the address of the community, written in Jimmy's sprawling handwriting.
"They say Haight-Ashbury is like another dimension. There are no rules or strangers. Maybe I won't have to pretend to be okay there."
She remembered how she had met Jimmy at a gas station a couple of weeks ago. She still remembered the smell of gasoline and the music playing at the gas station. He looked like something out of a Rolling Stone magazine picture: long hair, ripped jeans, guitar slung over his shoulder. Sitting on the hood of a van with the inscription "Make Love Not War" and the guy was telling stories about San Francisco, as if he were reading excerpts from some fabulous guidebook. It was the first time Liz had heard about the hippie commune, the morning jam sessions and dinners that were shared with everyone. Jimmy gave her the address, winked at her, and said, "We're always happy to welcome new faces. The main thing is to be yourself."
"Be yourself... Who am I anyway?" she pursed her dry lips, trying not to think about how her mother was probably already yelling at the neighbors, and her father was looking for another bottle.
Cars sped by one after another. Some drivers only took a quick glance, others ignored her altogether. Liz didn't give up, holding out her hand with her thumb, trying to fake a smile, as if she were saying, Hey, I belong here. You don't have to be afraid of me.
Finally, the horn sounded. The dusty Chevy slowed down and then pulled over to the curb, wheels crunching loudly on gravel.
Liz's heart skipped a beat. She grabbed her backpack, quickly crossed a couple of steps and leaned over to the driver's window. The cabin was stuffy and smelled of cheap air freshener.
"Hey, is there any chance you're heading to San Francisco?" she asked, trying to sound as confident as possible.
