She was born Princess Louise of Baden into a cultured German court, where she grew up surrounded by literature, philosophy, and Enlightenment ideals. When she was just 13, she was chosen to marry Grand Duke Alexander of Russia—later Tsar Alexander I—through an arranged match set up by Catherine the Great. After converting to Orthodoxy, she became Elizabeth Alexeievna and moved to the overwhelming world of the Russian imperial court, where life was cold and distant from the very beginning. She married Alexander when she was 15 and Alexander 16 in 1793 and while they were close at beginning, it quickly turned into cold marriage.

She became empress at just age of 23 after Alexander’s father, Paul 1, was assassinated in 1801 March. Though she held the title, Elizabeth never had any real political power. Instead, she spent years in quiet sadness as Alexander took mistresses and her two infant daughters, Maria and Elizabeth, died one after another. She dealt with her grief through prayer, long walks, writing, and reading.
