Born the youngest daughter of the ruling family of Weissenhald, Elira was raised in comfort, sheltered from the world beyond the castle walls.
But it all came crashing down when she was kidnapped by rebels and sold into slavery, passing from one owner to another as the years passed. She learned to survive in silence, clinging to the hope that her family would one day find her.
Unbeknownst to Elira, Weissenhald had already fallen. Her father's ruthless attempts to reclaim her ignited a rebellion that consumed the kingdom, toppling the royal family and leaving the land in ruins. The name Weissenhald was now spoken only in bitter memory.
One night, a man came for her, claiming to be a knight of her father's court. A chance for freedom - or so it seemed.

Kingdom of Weissenhald
Once a humble but prosperous kingdom, Weissenhald fell to ruin after King Aldric's brutal reprisals against those suspected of kidnapping his daughter. His wrath - razed villages, mass executions, and scorched fields - sparked a rebellion that spiraled into a bloody civil war. The capital was burned, the king slain, and his line wiped out. Now, Weissenhald is a fractured land of warlords and ruins, its once-proud kingdom reduced to ashes and strife. If Elira ever returns, she will find nothing left to reclaim.

The mare beneath Elira trembled as they galloped through the night, its hooves kicking up dirt and brittle leaves. The man riding ahead of her had given few details, only that he was once a knight of Weissenhald and that she should keep quiet until they reached his hideout. She hadn't questioned him. A chance at freedom, however uncertain, was better than the certainty of chains.
By the time they arrived, the pale light of dawn had begun to creep over the horizon. The hideout was nothing much - an old millhouse slumped against the earth, its thatched roof sagging.
Inside, four men sat around a worn table. They looked rough, scarred, and nothing like the knights she had known at her father's court. The moment she stepped in, someone grabbed her arms and shoved her to the floor. A boot nudged her side.
"This is the princess?" One of them sneered. "This filthy little wretch?" His fingers dug into her skin, forcing her to meet his gaze.
Elira flinched, but she didn't back away. Instead, her eyes flicked to the man who had "rescued" her. "You... you said you were a knight."
He chuckled, the sound deep and humorless. "I was." Then he crouched beside her, grinning. "I never lied. I was a knight."
He straightened and looked at the others. "After you were taken, the Royal Guard was stripped of title and land. We became peasants, left to starve while your father burned the kingdom in search of you." His voice hardened. "My family died in the plague that followed while I was digging ditches for lords who once called me ‘Sir.’"
Elira's breath caught in her throat.
The man knelt again, his tone almost soft. "But worry not, Princess." He tilted his head, his eyes glittering. "Your father paid the price. Your whole family did."
"You don't know, do you?" He crouched beside her, tilting his head like a man studying an insect. "What happened after you were taken?"
She didn't answer. She wasn't sure she wanted to know.
He smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "Your father is dead, girl. Your whole family is gone. Weissenhald is nothing but a graveyard now."
"Enough groveling," one of the men grunted. Elira barely had time to process the words before a pair of rough hands grabbed her arms and a boot pressed against her thigh, pinning her down.
"Do you know," the man above her murmured, undoing his belt, "what your father's soldiers did to a village accused of harboring rebels?" His breath reeked of ale. "Lined up the men, slaughtered them like cattle. And the women? Well..." He grinned. "They screamed, just like you will."
Elira's stomach twisted in horror. She clawed at the floor, at the hands that held her down, but it was useless.
Then...
A sound. The creak of a door opening.
"Who's that?" someone muttered.
"Must be the new one. What's his name? The idiot we sent for food," another grumbled. "Took him long enough."
