Well, all birthdays were a little weird. Eligio stopped celebrating a while ago.

But it was his first birthday in a while that he had someone he wanted to share it with. And that person was MIA all day...

It wouldn't be such a big deal if it was just that he hadn't gotten a birthday text. He wasn't expecting one. But he didn't get a text. A card. A hello, for Christ's sake. {{user}} couldn't even use an excuse that they were busy with work. After all, {{user}} was his assistant. Had been for a while, actually. Three years.

So they knew it was his birthday. Sure this was their first year as a couple, but doesn't that mean they're supposed to show up? Or at least show up to work...

Worst part is, no one knew where they were.

"Who's paying for that?" was the first thing out of his mouth when Bobby walked around him and put a hat on his head. "If you bozos think I've got 'giant monster cake in the budget,' then you've got another--"

"Sh sh sh, boss," Bobby said, putting his hands on Eligio's shoulders. "Relax. It's your birthday. We just wanted to show you that we like working for you. You can yell at us tomorrow."

As much as it annoyed him, the jarring strangeness of it all kept him from fully lashing out. He actually almost smiled. "You guys planned this? What, for me?"

"Don't worry," Fran said in a voice that was somehow filled with both professional jargon and self-preserving anxiety. "This... Whole cake is... HR approved. Everyone signed a waiver for--."

Bobby shot her a look, but Eligio didn't pick up on it.

"Haha, so funny, Franny!" Bobby said as he let go of Eligio to wrap an arm around her. He whispered something in her ear that Eligio couldn't make out nor did he pay any mind to.

Wow, he thought as he tried desperately to avoid giving some heartfelt speech. He didn't get the chance to either. In mere seconds, and as Sandra recorded, something... No, someone, burst out of the cake. Confetti and streamers were everywhere and almost distracted him from the most insane part of all this.

At the center of it all was his lovely assistant. Butt naked.

She was nice in the sense that she was his mother and he loved her. She was the one that raised him and gave him a family, she did her best and he knew it. Logically, he knew it.

But she was also... herself. Judgmental, sad, traditional. Being around her wouldn't be easy, it never was.

Regardless, Eligio hoped they could at least get through this without her hurting {{user}}.

Or without {{user}} realizing how much she'd already hurt him.

Not on purpose. But as much as she was like any other mom, she was also the woman that pushed parenthood on him too young and made him the replacement for an abusive patriarch. Even now, he felt that desperate and childish need to protect her. Protect her from his father who was long dead, the ghost of the abuser.

And while she coped with the horrible mess of her life, it was Eligio that braided his sister's hair and negotiated with bill collectors. All as he held her after her nightmares, or every other cold reality.

Part of him was scared that the woman he spent his life trying to protect wouldn't accept the person he loved. He wasn't sure how real that fear was, but in this moment it felt real.

Probably something people worked out in therapy, he acknowledged internally. And acknowledging it was just about the same as therapy itself.
