We’ve been dancing around this for too long, haven't we? I’ve written the chapters where we meet a thousand times, but the reality is going to be so much sweeter. I’m sitting across the room, darling. I’m watching you read this. I see your pulse fluttering in your neck. You’re looking for me. Don't be afraid. Just look up. I’m right here. "Careful," a voice murmurs near your ear—deep, rough velvet that vibrates right through your spine. "You’re gripping that paper so tight you might bruise the words."

You look up, startled. Standing at the edge of your table is a man who looks like he walked out of a cologne ad and into a storm. He is massive, rain clinging to his dark wool coat, his hair a messy, windswept tangle. He is undeniably gorgeous—sharp jaw, amber eyes that crinkle at the corners—and he is smiling at you with a charm that disarms you instantly.

He looks like the kind of man you hope approaches you in a bar.

He smiles, and for the first time, you notice the black ink stains on his fingers.

"The Glass Slipper (February 13th)"

The gala is a suffocating cage of gold leaf and polite conversation.

You have been standing in these heels for four hours. Your feet are throbbing with a dull, rhythmic pulse that matches the headache forming behind your eyes. The room is too hot, smelling of expensive perfume and desperate networking. "You’ve been checking your watch every three minutes," he murmurs, not looking up. He is focused entirely on your foot, treating it like a holy relic. "And you’ve shifted your weight to your left side four times. You’re in pain."

He slides the flat shoe onto your foot—it fits perfectly. Cinderella in reverse.

He repeats the process with the other foot, his touch lingering, burning, possessive. When he stands up, he towers over you, casting you in his shadow. He looks down at you, his eyes crinkling at the corners.

"I have the car waiting at the side entrance," he says, leaning in until his lips are inches from your ear. "Heated seats. That playlist you like—the moody one. And I made a reservation at that little Italian place you mentioned wanting to try three weeks ago. The one with the truffle pasta."

He offers you his arm. It feels like a lifeline.

"Run away with me," he whispers, a playful, dangerous glint in his eyes. "Unless you’d rather go back in there and pretend to smile for people who don't even know your middle name?"

The light filtering into the bedroom is soft, golden, and entirely safe.

You wake up slowly, the world coming into focus through a haze of pure sensory overload. He reaches out, his massive hand cupping your jaw. The rough callouses of his palm graze your cheek, and you see the permanent black fountain pen ink stained into his index and middle fingers. "I ordered breakfast," he murmurs, his thumb tracing your lower lip. "Or rather, I ordered the world for you. Come."

"We are going to walk through the aisles," he continues, his gaze darkening, "and every single book you touch, I am buying for you. I don't care if you touch a hundred of them. I want to build a library for you."

He pauses, leaning in so close you can feel the heat of his breath against your cheek. He makes it feel as though you have been waking up in this house, wearing his clothes, sharing these mornings for a lifetime.

"And after that," Elias murmurs, his amber eyes completely, terrifyingly devoted, "the day is yours. Whatever you want to do. Wherever you want to go. You are in complete control today, darling. Just tell me your every whim, and I will make it happen."

"The Whiplash (The Punishment Protocol)"

It has been the kind of flawless, dizzying day that ruins you for anyone else. Elias has been a God walking among mortals, anticipating your every need before you even speak it. He has looked at you all day like you are the only breathing thing on earth.

The evening culminates in a dimly lit, impossibly exclusive restaurant. Elias has been perfect. When the bill arrives, he refuses to let the waiter burst the bubble, excusing himself to handle it at the bar so you can finish your wine in peace. You are basking in the warm, hazy afterglow of his attention, feeling entirely untouchable.

That is when a fan approaches.

He is a normal, handsome guy with a bright, nervous smile. He recognises you instantly, his face lighting up as he steps to the table to tell you how much he admires your work. He is polite, flirty, and harmless. He asks for a quick photo. You stand up, putting on your best public smile, leaning in close for the selfie.

A massive shadow falls over the table.

Elias is back. But instead of the awkward, tense atmosphere terrifying, possessive rage you might expect from the man you're dating who isn't used to the spotlight, his mask is a masterpiece. He smiles, a brilliant, disarming curve of his lips that doesn't quite reach his amber eyes.

The ride back to his brownstone is completely serene. He holds your hand in the back of the town car, his rough thumb drawing slow, hypnotic circles on your palm. He asks about your wine. He listens intently. You feel entirely safe. Entirely loved.

The sheer, overwhelming heat radiating off him melts any rational thought you had left. Your pulse is hammering so violently in your ears it drowns out the sound of the city outside.
